Chat with Jean-Jacques Taylor

Morice (Virginia Beach, VA)

How irritating does it have to be to see former cowboys get sb rings (lonyae miller and adrian hamilton this year and last year stanback got one) while the Cowboys continue watching the super bowl?

JJT
  (1:00 PM)

Not at all really because it's not like those guys were dominant players in the game. They were just along for the ride. UNtil the Cowboys make better decisions as an organization, they're going to struggle

Raul (Rio grande city)

JJT, do u think Aikman's words are ringing in Jerry's ears? "Draft a Qb"

JJT
  (1:03 PM)

Nope. It's an organizational decision. What's interesting isn't that the Cowboys have drafted just three quarterbacks since Troy Aikman. What's interesting is how many times they've tries to be smarter than everyone else and acquire guys such as Drew Henson or Chad Hutchinson or even taking Quincy Carter 2-3 rounds early. Quit trying to get a Qb on the cheap and pay the freight to get one

Vinnie Vyas (Mumbai, India)

The age and injuries should make Ware expendable. Why not trade him for a first round pick and sign a yougerAnthony Spencer who otherwise would be an unrestrictive free agent/

JJT
  (1:04 PM)

You must not remember the Cowboys went about a decade w/o a player getting double digit sacks. Anythgony Spencer won't be here. Do you really want to start the season without Ware. C'mon man. The dude played last month with one arm

Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)

Who will be the New Faces for the Texas Rangers for 2013?

JJT
  (1:05 PM)

catcher AJ pierzynski and DH Lance Berkman are the ones who matter the most I think

Kenyatta Adams (Roselle, NJ)

Good Morning Jean Jacques. I hope all is well. I would love to know you thoughts on this topic. If the Dallas Cowboys were to upgrade their Offensive Line through the draft and or free agency with Elite Players, would Romo be able to cut down on his mental mistakes in crunch time?I want Romo to play like he did in the 2007 season Romo. Have a great day Jean!

JJT
  (1:06 PM)

He seems to have a knack for making errors at important times.

Keith (Washington)

Why is Jerry holding onto Jason Garrett when it appears he is learning on the job plus there has been no significant year improvement of the team.

JJT
  (1:07 PM)

When u hire a HC who has never ever been a HC it's a joke to think he's not going to make mistakes here and there. Firing the coach isn't going to make the Cowboys any better if the systemic issues don't improve

Keith (Pensacola)

Do you see the Cowboys targeting a DL in the draft and OL in FA? Also, does it appear Doug Free will be cut this offseason?

JJT
  (1:08 PM)

They're going to look at OL-DL, but they need to take the best player. They have a ton of issues that need to be addressed. They can certainly take best player on the board

William (VT)

Hey JJT, Henry Melton is a guy who can fit well in this scheme, at a reasonable price could you see the cowboys going after him?

JJT
  (1:08 PM)

I don't think they're going to have the cap room to add a big ticket item such as Melton

Gary (los feliz)

Is Jerry done with making things "uncomfortable?" I was still hoping he would fire Mr. Blue blazer..

James (New Mexico)

Watching the Superbowl this weekend make me believe the cowboys aren't close to being contenders any time soon. What do you think the could need to from a philosophical or player personnel stand point to compete for titles?

JJT
  (1:09 PM)

Mr. Blue Blazer is getting at least one more year. Sorry.

Jesse (Frisco)

What is your opinion of National Signing Day? Is there too much hype put into it? I think there is since none of the players have ever done anything in college sports. I'm trying to separate college athletics (billion dollar busines) from high school athletics (small time business) here. SKYLINE REPRESENT!!!

JJT
  (1:12 PM)

it is what it is. America is built on who's the best and who will be the best. We're a competitive society and it has trickled down to kids. Recruiting is like the draft. There are way more misses than hits. You gotta keep it in perspective and know that some kid u never heard of will pan out and some kid who was supposed to be great will be a dud. Most top recruits have never failed before. How they handle failure and tough coaching often determines whether they pan out

Martin (South Carolina)

Its Black History Month, Whom are or were your idols?

JJT
  (1:16 PM)

African-American heroes would be Paul Robeson, Frederick Douglas, Benjamin Banneker are at top of the list.

Nayshawn (Los angeles)

im hearing from different analyst that mike jenkins may only get a one year deal on the free agent market, How true is that?

JJT
  (1:17 PM)

it wouldn't shock me. He didn't have a good year. He was hurt and just average much of the season

Victor (TX)

Would you bring Stephen Jackson in towards the end of his career to help murray? Jackson did say he always wanted to be a cowboy and the money and years wont be crazy

JJT
  (1:17 PM)

nope. You don't want an old RB with a physical style

Stephan (New York)

Do you think Jerry Should make Romo Prove his worth similar to Flacco in baltimore before giving him a huge deal?

JJT
  (1:19 PM)

Romo counts $17 million against the salary cap next year. He has to get a new deal. Romo has team over a barrel

Shaun (Texas)

What will the rangers do about cruz PED use and were you surprise?

JJT
  (1:21 PM)

They better have a contingency plan because I'll be shocked if he doesn't get suspended for 50 games. The hard part is not making a panic move because those rarely work out. MIke Olt might be the best option

Andre (New Jersey)

What your thoughts on Larry Allen Going to the Hall and Whom else from those 90's temas has a chance to get in?

JJT
  (1:23 PM)

He deserved it. He's was the epitome of greatness. Haley is the only one getting in the HOF. After that, it's going to be a long drought

Willy (houston)

Why didnt the mavs go for rudy gay? he's a good number two scorer next to dirk

JJT
  (1:24 PM)

He's not special and he's getting paid max money. That's a bad deal

Matt (nc)

Is Ray Lewis the best linebacker ever?

JJT
  (1:25 PM)

nope, but he's in the conversation. Lawrence Taylor. Dick Butkus. come to mind

jfb (dfw)

Ugly loss last night for the Mavs, time to blow up whatever you have left. How long do you think we could possibly be looking at until the Mavs are competing again at a high level?

JJT
  (1:25 PM)

They will be average to bad until they get another superstar by trade or draft. That could be 2-3 years. Or it could be a decade.

jfb (dfw)

If your the Mavs, what is your plan?

JJT
  (1:26 PM)

Pray u somehow land a star

jfb (dfw)

Do you think Cuban ever thinks he wants a do over on the offseason following the championship season or does he still believe he did the right thing trying to swing for the fences?

JJT
  (1:27 PM)

yep. He swung for the fences based on hope. No way, they were ever going to get D12 or CP3 or Deron Williams to leave money on the table to come here

Shane (Jersey)

Why don't you think charles haley is in the hall yet, he has the numbers, rings, and dominates?

JJT
  (1:27 PM)

he'll probably get in next year. He's not being snubbed. It just takes time sometimes

Marcus (Dallas)

Now that Ware will be attacking up field on every down do you think it will make him more dangerous?

JJT
  (1:29 PM)

not really. now, he has to deal with tackles and play the run before transitioning to pass rush. I think it makes his job more difficult. But we'll see

Frank (Miami)

Will the cap situation keep the cowboys from shopping this off- season, and how much money is coming off the cap with all the freeagents leaving?

JJT
  (1:29 PM)

They're about $20 million over. They're not gonna have much money to go shopping

Steve (Miami)

Archer wrote an article that say Dallas is 20M over the cap, but, with extending Romo, cutting Free and a couple others, and restructuring 4 players.....they will have 18-20M to work with. They will be in on a player or 2 if Spencer is indeed gone!

JJT
  (1:30 PM)

nope - at least no one who's going to excite you

G-Money (Chicago, IL)

Blessings JJT - Thanks for hosting today's chat. I read your latest article, and you make it sound as if simply by making "bold" moves, Garrett will be a better coach and the team will be more successful. But bold moves aren't always the right moves. I think better overall decision-making - not simply making bold moves - is what will benefit Garrett the most. Perhaps you're implying that he needs to trust his instincts more - be more confident, less conservative. Just my thoughts - thanks, brutha.

JJT
  (1:31 PM)

bold move really means coaching to win instead of not to lose in every aspect. Don't worry about what happens when things go wrong because you're getting fired anyway

Cain (Berwyn )

Do u think Landry jones will be available fourth or fifth round pick.

JJT
  (1:31 PM)

maybe. I'll pass

Reggie Smith (Washington DC)

Two questions:1. Is Dirk getting frustrated playing on a losing team two years removed from a championship?2. Read your Red J needs to be "bold" column. What is one "bold" thing he could do.

JJT
  (1:32 PM)

1) absolutely 2) the bold move will reveal itself during the season. I have no idea what it will be

Thomas (home)

When do dallas have to make a decison on jay Ratliff?

JJT
  (1:32 PM)

there is no time limit

Aaron (Dallas)

Stars are getting quality play out of their young players and finally have some much needed depth. Will it be enough for them to get back to the playoffs this year?

JJT
  (1:36 PM)

I haven't paid much attention to the Stars just yet. The good news is they're getting leads, but the bad news is they're blowing them with regularity. They have a good young nucleus, but it's going to take some time. We also need to see if Brendan Morrow has anything left

jfb (dfw)

JJT you have teams that start to get too smart for their own good, i.e. OKC trading Harden, teams that ruin their chemistry, i.e. Lakers, teams that their star players suffer significant injuries, i.e. Boston and Chicago with Rondo and Rose. Should the Mavs have at least given their championship team the chance to come back and defend their title? How far would they have gotten last year and where do you think they would be right now? San Antonio seems to have used that way of thinking where they make minor adjustments, i.e. European picks stashed away, lottery/early draft busts claimed and put in the system, quality late round picks, etc. to build to their older core.

JJT
  (1:37 PM)

That's an easy second-guess now. The Mavs have had a great run. It's over. And they're gonna struggle until they find another star

Ian (Atl, GA)

You seem to intimate that the difference between the Cowboys and the 49ers is Jason Garrett's inability to make bold decisions. This is a change from your lack of players stance in the past. I agree with the old stance. In fact, an article in bloggingtheboys.com shows that the Cowboys have far fewer top 3 round draft picks on the team than the 49ers and much more undrafted FA. Maybe Jerry could help Jason with hitting on players in the draft so he can have depth to make bold decisions with benching, etc is more of an issue! Thoughts?

JJT
  (1:38 PM)

I gave plenty examples of dudes rotting on the bench who performed when given opportunity. He has to be able to see those guys can help and get them on the field. He tends to err on side of caution that's all

Bryan (Springdale, AR)

Shawn Marion and Vince Carter have to have some good trade value for a contender on the brink of being a heavyweight in the playoffs, right?

JJT
  (1:38 PM)

yep

Rick (Endicott)

JJT, are there any young players on the Cowboy roster that haven't yet made an impact that you see being significant contributors/starters going froward?

JJT
  (1:39 PM)

Claiborne should be a lot better next year. I'm intrigued by James Hanna and I like what we saw from Dewayne Harris

Kyle (Forney)

Do the Rangers trade Elvis after this year? They have to right.

JJT
  (1:40 PM)

If not sooner, if the right deal comes along. He's got 2 years left, so the closer you get to next year the less value he has

Steve (Miami)

No Cliff Harris or Pearson or Harvey Martin??? Harris has been nominated in 2004. LeeRoy Jordan was nominated in 88. Thoughts?

JJT
  (1:40 PM)

No. No. No. No.

chris (tx)

How good do you think Romo would be if he had a good Oline

JJT
  (1:41 PM)

who knows. His problem is decision-making

Sore (Loser)

Do you think Eric Frampton "Comes Alive" makes the team next year?

JJT
  (1:41 PM)

too early to know

Bryan (Springdale, AR)

Have you ever been asked to mentor one of the Cowboys? Have you evern been asked if you need one of the Cowboys to mentor you?

JJT
  (1:41 PM)

no. no.

BobbyC (Philly)

You opinion: Cowboys go 9-7 or even 10-6 but miss the playoffs.Does Garrett get another year?

JJT
  (1:42 PM)

it depends on how it went down

nate keyman (sioux falls)

JJTwhat do think the cowboys do with jay ratiff trade him or realease him how will the rangers do this year.

JJT
  (1:43 PM)

keep him. 3rd place in the west. 88-74

Christian (Dallas)

If the cowboys fix the oline and dline during the draft what are there chances to go to the playoffs next year? and the superbowl?

JJT
  (1:44 PM)

we don't even know who's gonna be on the team next year. Too early to say

Marc (FL)

it seems like all the upcoming free agents on the team wont be here next year. how do you fill all of those roster spots

JJT
  (1:44 PM)

draft picks and low-cost FAs

Shawn (The Woodlands)

Did you ever think Flacco would win a Super Bowl before Romo?

JJT
  (1:45 PM)

yea just because Baltimore is a much better franchise than the Cowboys

JJT
  (1:46 PM)

The chat has been great. Let's do it again next week. Peace.
