What it do HornsNation! Thanks for joining this week's announcement. Just had some late breaking news giving to me my Andrew himself. He's already changed his mind once today.
How you like me now Wilkerson!?! Whatchu think about the Tide now???
Not my place to like anything man. Happy for you wherever you would have ended up. You will do great things at Alabama.
Good afternoon William. Worst recruiting class ever in Texas FB? Darius James y Kent Perkins are the only reason for optimism. What do you think about it?
Afternoon bud. Not worst ever. Just smaller. Great OL haul that should make huge different in coming years. Texas just needs to win. Plain and simple. Off to a good start with 7 commits in 2014. Big weekend ahead. Larry Porter is going to make huge difference.
Did UT offer Wilson early in the process? If not, if Texas would have offered Dontre Wilson much earlier, would he be a Horn?
Of the '13 wide out commits, which one, if any, will have the biggest impact this coming year.
OK, so where has Billingsly committed to??
He's sticking real close to home. real close.
Will we get Billings?? We desperately need Billings.
Sorry man. Not going to happen. Staying close to home.
Is there anyone else who isn't committed to Texas even considering them at this point (Other than Billings who seems to be leaning elsewhere)?
Little Elm RB Ke'aun Kinner. It's all about grades with him. Could be a post-signing day signee.
You think there was some under the table type stuff going on with RSJ and Robinson? Maybe I'm just coming up with excuses that we didnt get them, but its possible
I'd rather not dive into all of that. What I do know is that RSJ was always upfront and honest with me. Those around him had a bunch to do with why Texas went in another direction.
What happened to the bball team?
So much. Can't shoot. Turns ball over way too much. No low post offense. Trouble collecting themselves late in games as you saw against WVU.
Do you think Texas can rebound on recruiting in 2014? Are these early offers going to lead to more decommits?
Definitely do. Winning solves everything and I think Texas will do more of that in 2014. Huge weekend/opportunity for UT. Need to make strong impression on this group. Cam Hampton, Ty Barrett, Tony Brown, Ed Paris and others. I do believe these guys will stick. There is one i have my eye on (DR).
Hey Will, What's going on in Austin? Brew arrested, Robinson gone. Do you think A'Shawn's decision will come back to bite him? remember Perriloux and Rouse?
Raul, I'm afraid that ship has sailed on down to Tuscaloosa my friend. Def. a tough weekend for the burnt orangemen. No time to sulk though. Big junior day on Sunday.
When does spring ball start?? I need it to start ASAP.
Later this month. Feb. 23. Same day as second junior day.
It's funny that we are losing so many recruits when the longhorns are poised to win the conference next season.. How long will it take to be back on top recruiting wise after this year?
Winning the conference would be a massive statement for Mack and Co. Do that and the recruits will start to turn their attention back toward Austin a lot more than they did this year. There won't be 5 decommitments. i can tell you that. There might not be a single one if that happens.
Was there something we were missing with Robinson? I keep hearing he was never really that interested, just more of his mother driving the bus? Or was it just the pull of Saban? Also, the new WR, was that stricltly a panic offer?
A'Shawn has told me point blank that he was emotionally invested in the program. Not in those exact words but something to that degree. He liked the program, the distance to his mother, etc. But Saban coming down the day after he ended his official to Texas made a strong statement. Can't go wrong with the two-time defending national champs can you?
William, maybe you and I should commit to Texas since no one else will. I'm sure we couldn't be a whole lot worse than Adrian Phillips anyway
I hold the kicks and you kick them?
You are the new head coach. You know your O-Line has little depth and wasn't as productive as you liked. With all the talent coming in name your starters and their back ups
Like that huh? I'll go Desmond Harrison, Trey Hopkins, Dom Espinosa, Mason Walters and Donald Hawkins. But I do think Darius James, Poehlmann, Sed Flowers, Estelle, Riser and Raulerson will all see time. That's super tough.
Is this year the start of a trend of underperforming/declining recruiting years or solely based on the fact this class was always going to be small? I know the number will be around the target of 15 or so like the staff planned, but so many decommitments this year just makes it feel like the recruiting year was a bit of a failure. And I feel bad saying that because we have an incredible o-line class, Antwaun Davis, one nice linebacker prospect, potentially okay receivers...maybe I'm just spoiled as a UT fan.
A little spoiled, yes, but I agree with you to some extent. It's hard not to look at this class as somewhat of a disappointment with 5 decommitments. However I do think this class was about quality over quantity from jump street and there are a lot of salty players coming in that can make strong statements over the next few years. That OL group is stupid good.
Hey Will,How can commits change their mind even AFTER taking officials down in Austin. Is it the uncertainty of the program, coaching staff? How are we missing out on these guys after they come and visit??
A bunch of different factors. Texas isn't winning like it once was. There is such pressure on these coaches to win and win right away that they are being beyond relentless with all recruits, committed or not. Texas needs to win more. Point blank. Do that and they'll stop looking around.
Where did we go wrong with Billings? Seems like he was ours for the last 6 months!
He loved the idea of playing DT and I think Texas not starting him out as a DT rubbed him the wrong way a bit. Plus there is just so much pressure on these kids with colleges in their hometown to stay put.
hoops? when should i expect a ship from them or even final four finish? whatss your thoughts on papi?
Like Papi's game. Think he settles for the trey a little too much. But his ball handling is solid for someone his size. Could be best all around player on the roster. You might have to wait a while on a ship but give this team two years and they'll be a Sweet 16 team.
It looks like on paper that we have a ton of speed and talent at skill position on offense, why not have an up tempo offense like Oregon instead of Alabama because we don't have that type of team?
Easier said than done. But Texas will likely move to more of a spread with Applewhite. Be prepared to see an overload of vertical deep balls. Mike Davis should be smiling.
Did you buy in to my fake Verbal to Ohio State? I'm really faxing my LOI to Mack on NSD.
Not at all. I saw how your eyes lit up when you picked up that Texas hat first. JK. Good luck in OH-IO.
When will we hear about outcome for Hicks, Case, and now Connor?
Hicks and McCoy are back on team. I expect something on CB in a few weeks with spring ball starting up Feb. 23.
What are the chances % of Jalen Overstreet being the backup QB nxt year? I hope the coaches give him a fair shot, because a former 3* RS Frosh QB down in college station turned out to be pretty good.
That former three-star can play a bit in CS, I will give you that. I think they are better than good man. With what has happened to McCoy and Brewer, you never know how that will effect them emotionally.
why isnt mack brown clutch when it comes to recruiting like nick saban or meyer
See: Nick Saban, back to back nattys. Urban Meyer, undefeated in first season on a program not bowl eligible.
What are the chances Deloss gets pushed out by the BOR for the whole Major Applewhite issue
10 %. More of a slap on the wrist issue I believe.
Tu crees que podemos ganarle a los Sooners este ano que veine?
Any surprise commits that Mack has under his sleeve?
Afraid not Jake.
Is it "really" that bad of a class?
Not at all. OL is among the best in the country. Two solid WRs. Erik Huhn is a player folks. Wait til he gets healthy. Same with D. Davis. A. Davis will be multi year starter. Swaim adds blocking credability right away. Raulerson will be a team captain. Never know how Swoopes will blossom. Good class. Not great. But good.
Is there one more flip for better or worse before NSD?
Sorry Stephen. Gets some rest up. Get it you live in Seattle. Sleepless in Seattle. Horrible joke. I know.
William, Where does Texas stand going forward with the recent de-commitments and the lackluster three years? Is it time for Longhorn nation to thank Mack for the great times and look for the coach who will take us back to prominence? Texas has still brought in good recruits this year but there have been too many lost battles and this class is smaller than anticipated, regardless of the propaganda coming out of the University.
Mack has circled 2013 as the year that Texas gets back to where it is known for being. If all goes as I think it will the Longhorns will be in contention for the Big 12 title and a BCS bowl. Do that and recruits will be much more inclined to commit to UT.
whose the sleeper on this texas team that will have a big year?
Daje, Kendall Sanders, Duke Thomas, Hassan Ridgeway.
Honestly, am glad Texas had a small recruiting class. Yes, everybody will take the highly rated recruits but they dont ALWAYS pan out to be greats, Texas needed players to come in looking to play with passion, not add to the media hype. This teams gets soo much media they need to recollect themselves and focus on eachother, thats the only way Texas will every be Texas whether we have the #1 class or the #30 oh and you must Develop those players. Can they contiuned to grow? I believe so.
Hey William! Why is everyone freaking out, don't you think it is better to be selective since we have young, experienced talent? This is going to be a better week than last week!
I get where you are coming from. But Texas fans are used to the top 5 classes and such. There isn't a lot of room for these commits to play right away just because of the upperclassmen already in place. But that should just bode well for their development and the future of the program.
Longhorn nation needs some type of good news. Do you have anything that could cheer us up? Something? Anything?
The basketball team doesn't play today. That's decent news right?
Looks like the Aggies and Longhorns are going to be competing for alot of elite talent again next year. Who are the top 3 recruiting battles in the state going to be, and who hold the edge in each?
Myles Garrett. A&m advantage. Tony Brown. Push. Nick Watkins. Texas.
Who is this (DR) you referred to earlier in the chat that will be there for junior day on sunday?
Initials of one of Texas' 2014 commits.
Sheldon McClellan and Juice Lewis are so erratic and inconsistent shooting wise. Last year i felt like Sheldon had a great stroke, but now it looks not very good. With Keith Frazier's offensive firepower, IF he did commit could you see him starting over the Juniors Shelly Mac and Juice?
Is Jerrod Heard our savior? And where does he rank among 2014 qbs? He reminds me of an RG3 - a guy who is a natural thrower but can also really run.
Hassan Ridgeway, Adrian Colbert, and Bryson Echols are 3 players that should see the field next year? yes, or no?
Do you think all of the de-committments this year are an issue with our recruiting model or more a product of schools offering earlier and earlier?
recruiting model is fine. Going 22-16 over three years isn't.
If Texas poops this year, can they still pull in a 5 * BBALL recruit? they NEED one. Just one, and I see progress. Without one, this team will continue to struggle, especially if Kabango leaves, unless Taylor is the truth.
5 star recruits like to be the BMOC. Any 5 star recruit would be that guy if he chose Texas. So, yes.
All these comments about how bad Texas is recruiting are funny. Texas athletics as a whole right now are mediocre...win some games and we will be back to where we were, don't win more games and mediocrity is in our future. Simple
Recruiting just like the season. Started out good and then just when down to a disappointment.
Do you think there will be any commits at/after junior days? If so, who should we keep an eye out for that is most likely in your opinion?
Justin, I do. Look for my recruiting primer on HornsNation.com on Friday for who I think Texas should keep an eye on. Thanks!
Make a leap of faith for the Leading rusher, Leading Tackler after 2013 for Texas? Gray or Brown? Defense is a lil tougher.
Who can be the deep threat at receiver once Magic leaves?
Kendall, Daje, Warrick, Meander.
That's it. Mack HAS to go. The only thing he could do anymore was recruit and now he's lost TWO recruits to Baylor, at least 1 to A&M (possibly 2 with D. Hall) and has zero momentum with recruits. Any chance he terrorizes us more and sticks around for more than this one season?
Good chance because I think he gets back to that 10-win mark.
How do you see the logjam at QB working out? Who do you think will transfer, and out of Brewer and Overstreet, who do you see starting after Ash?
Ash, Overstreet, McCoy, Brewer, Swoopes this year. McCoy and Brewer are interchangeable.
Alabama has stolen a 5 star recruit from us. Baylor has now won 2 recruiting battles over us (billings and rhodes). A&M is now consistently winning recruiting battles over us. Mack has always been known as an average in-game coach but a hell of a recruiter. I have long been a huge Mack supporter while others questioned him, but should I be getting worried since the step up we used to have over everybody is seemingly deteriorating?
No doubt. Texas A&M is hot and only going to get hotter. The Aggies' move to the SEC has opened up a lot of doors for the best conf. in football to recruit Texas more. Not good for UT.
Which player that was red-shirted in 2012 will make the biggest impact in 2013?
What will Myck's impact be once he gets back? Will he start over Felix? Will we see a dramatic drop in turnovers?
Dont think it's fair for him to immediately start over Felix. But I don't see how that team would work with both of them on the floor at same time.
Do you believe next year is the biggest year for the Longhorns on the field? BCS or Bust. It looks like if Texas isn't a top 5 program, its going to be a real uphill battle to get the top recruits.
Without question. A 4th year of non Texas-like football will not sit well with fans or recruits.
Awesome questions/comments by everyone. Thanks a bunch for being a part of it. Head over to HornsNation for all the latest on Andrew Billings. Stay put tomorrow for all your signing day coverage and then stay with us Sunday for all the news you could ever want on Texas' junior day. Have a good one.
