Dylan is here!
What is your typical pre-game routine for days you have to pitch?
I try to eat two healthy meals before I go to the field. I'll eat breakfast. I like to get up and get moving, not sleep in until noon or 1. I hang out at the clubhouse. Eat some fruit. I don't like to be by myself. I like to go about business as a normal day. In the minor leagues, I took one round of BP in the outfield. I'll take a 5-hour energy right before my warmups. Then I'll go out for warmups and I'm ready to go.
What was your best hunting trip this offseason?
I took a road trip down to Texas. We spent a Friday, Saturday, Sunday down there. Just me and my brother. We took our four-wheelers out there. We didn't get anything, but it was a great time, just me and my brother.
Did you ever imagine that you could be such a highly ranked prospect? (No.2 by MLB.com, No.3 by Espn)
No, I never really thought about it like that. My sophomore year, I realized I probably was going to get drafted and I wanted to just like my brother.
Are you as excited to wear an Oriole's big league uniform as we are (the fans) to see you sporting one? Baltimore is a great place to play, and the excitement about the future of the club is all over the city. Got get em Dylan!
Yes, of course. That's everyone's dream in the minor leagues. Putting on the major league uniform is a little bit different.
Dylan, what did you learn from the Orioles run to the post season and how will it help you for this upcoming year?
I guess just the competitiveness we have in the clubhouse. Everyone has a winning attitude in there. We'll be around that again this spring. Being around that is better than a losing attitude, obviously.
What have you been doing throughout the offseason that you feel has gotten you ready the most for spring training?
Basically the same thing as last year, work out five days a week. We have a place in Tulsa and we work out there. I have a throwing program that I do the last 4-5 years that me and my brother do. I feel like I'm ready.
How did you feel after Buck called you up after being sent to the instructional league? Were you able to work out the nerves in order to start this year in the bigs fresh, whether or not you're in the opening day rotation?
I was excited. I got the call at 4 a.m. My roommate actually answered the call. I didn't really believe the guy telling me. He had to convince me that it was true.
Do think that your stint in the major leagues last season will affect your next major league appearance?
Hopefully I got the nerves out a little bit. I will have the nerves before a start, but I think it helped a little bit, yeah.
What was the hardest adjustment going from High School into a full season of professional baseball?
The minimum four hour bus rides in A ball. I wasn't used to doing that every week. Throwing every day. In high school, you only have to throw 4-5 days per week.
Is there any special meaning behind your jersey number?
I only had two options, 72 or 49 when I got called up and I thought 49 was a little better than 72. I was 7 in high school and that's the number I liked. 7 times 7 is 49 so that's kinda funny.
How many tornados have you seen in your lifetime growing up in Oklahoma?
I only saw one on the news about an hour and a half from me. Luckily it wasn't close to us.
Dylan How nervous were you in your first big league game?
If you read the news, I couldn't find my glove. I had my glasses on my hat when I went out to warm up. When I got to the mound, my leg was shaking when I came set. I thought the umpire was going to call me for a balk.
After winning the Jim Palmer award, your brother seemed to struggle last year in the minors? What do you think the struggles were attributed to and how do you see this seasnon playing out for him?
He had a little clean up on his elbow. You can't throw at 100%. But he's ready to go.
In your opinion, who is the best pitcher in baseball?
I'm going to go with King Felix.
How do you feel about inning limits?
That's a tough one. I think inning limits are a little overrated. I think more a pitch count and the struggle you have in a game than an inning limits for the year.
What was your first thought when they told you to ditch the cutter? In retrospect, do you think it helped you?
I wouldn't say it helped, but I wouldn't say it hurt either. That's one of my best pitches, but I had a lot of good pitches too. I still have it. I've been throwing it a bit this offseason.
Do you expect to be on the opening day roster? From what I have read, we seem to have 4 starters already locked down. I know many of us die hard fans are hoping you will be the 5th.
I'm going into spring training like I did last year, trying to make the opening day roster. That's my mindset. Everyone wants to break camp with the team.
In the Majors you will get to see some living Legends, and pitch again them. Of all the hitters in history, who would you most like to strike out and why?
That's a tough one. I want to face Mike Trout.
Pitchers and catcher report in one week. What will your main focus be on this spring and through the year?
My main focus is trying to break camp with the big leagues. Be competitive. I'm excited to get the year going and get another full year in.
How did your teamates treat you when you were call up? your major league teamates.
They treated me great. We were in a pennant race. They were all looking ahead to winning the next game. I didn't get hazed at all. They were great.
Have you tried a Baltimore crabcake yet?
Not the crabcake, but I've tried crabs.
What has been your favorite minor league park to play at thus far?
Winston-Salem in High A ball.
Were you cheering for the Ravens to win on Sunday?
I actually was. The Baltimore Ravens was the first professional football game I went to. Their first of the year, at home.
What is your brother's best pitch? And what would he say is your best pitch?
Probably his two seam fastball. He would probably say my heater, probably.
What is your entrance song going to be?
I have no clue. I haven't even thought about that.
What MLB (past or present) pitcher would you say you model yourself after?
No one really. I like to be myself. I really like Roger Clemens and Nolan Ryan and Josh Beckett early in his career, I really like watching him.
What was it like to come into a major league game as a reliever?
The only other time I've ever been a reliever is in the Future's Game. It was a lot different than being a starter.
Thanks for the questions. I really enjoyed it.
