Greetings everyone. Just signed my NLI. What's on your mind?
When does bubble watch begin?
Dave. Today! Eamonn Brennan has the first watch posted. Check it out.
Ryan Kelly is supposedly recovering nicely. That being said...if he returns in time for the ACC tournament...how much would that mean for Duke and the rest of the ACC teams? As well as for Duke's potential for a national title?
Justin: I think it will help a bunch. He stretches the defense becuase he can shoot, which takes the pressure off Plumlee. We'll see if he makes it back.
as a gonzaga fan all i see is people saying how were overrated because we play a WCC conference schedule and dont play top teams and yada yada. i have seen every game and feel we rightly deserve our ranking, your thoughts?
Brandon: I saw your team against Butler. NO trouble with their ranking whatsoever. That's a very good team.
When I look at the numbers (e.g., RPI, BPI, SOS, & Pommeroy), I see that top-to-bottom, the Mountain West is a seriously tough league to play in. In your estimation, (a) how tough of a league is the Mountain West, and (b) SHOULD (not WILL) they get 6 teams into the tournament?
Joseph: Definitely a very tough league, I agree. The problem is going to be whether or not the non-conference resumes for some of those teams stack up for the committee. I think it's a terrific league, myself, but not sure how it will compare.
Who do you think will win between Murray State and South Dakota State in Bracketbusters? Im thinking SDSU will because they have a little better supporting cast to go along with Wolters.
Jake: Yeah I"m not as impressed with Murray this year. Seem a bit more vulnerable. Big game tomorrow for them against Belmont.
Thoughts on the Florida loss and their possible vulnerability the rest of the season/in the tournament?
Dan: Well I was nervous about the fact that the SEC stinks and whether those were false results we were seeing. I still think Florida is awfully good - everyone is allowed a hiccup - but I'm still in a holding pattern on committing to them.
How likely is that the B1G ends up with two number one seeds, considering the remaining schedules of both Michigan and Indiana?
Mark: Think it's enitrely possible. The strength of the conference would merit it.
Why is Georgetown seemingly playing better without Greg Whittington?
Carl; Hard to know. Sometimes teams come together under adversity. Sometimes guys who are gone were making things unwieldy behind closed doors.
How much of the Creighton Bluejays have you watched this year? They seem like a dangerous team come tournament time. By far, the best shooting team in country (historically good if you look at the numbers), complimented by the great interior play of McDermott, a shutdown post defender in Greg Echenique, and a much improved defense. Are you buying my hype?
Anthony: I am buying. Think Creighton could be very dangerous in March. Anytime you have a transcendent player like McDermott - think Steph Curry or Jameer Nelson - you can do something special.
If Miami holds on to win the ACC regular season championship, do they have a valid claim to the No. 1 seed in the South region?
Mark: Boy, I dunno. That would be interesting, wouldn't it? Jim Larranaga should retire on the spot if it happens. I still think Michigan/Indiana/Kansas/Florida are the more likely candidates. But who knows?
Thoughts on last night's OSU/Mich game?
Brian: Terrific game and while I loved the Burke-Craft matchup throughout the game, I thought both tried to do too much alone at the end. Bad shot from Burke at end of regulation and Deshaun THomas needs to touch the ball in OT. But terrific teams. Gained more respect for Ohio State in that one.
The sky is falling in Syracuse! Help an orange fan out! Tell me its not.
Nah it's just snowing, isn't it? Team is definitely short handed and that is worrisome through March but I wouldn't panic. Yet.
Best team in Kansas?
Henry: The one in Lawrence.
How bad to you regret picking WVU to win the Big 12?
Jake: So bad that I've made a voodoo doll of myself and stick myself with a pin every hour.
How would you rank the teams in the Big 5 today? Seems like a complete crapshoot other than Penn
Brint: Excellent question and point. I don't t think any are great, frankly.
I understand UNM has had some bad losses, but they had some great wins as well. Why does everyone still think UNLV or SDSU will win the MWC this year? What do you think?
Justin: Legit question. For me personally I like San Diego State for personnel, experience and defense.
The Heels only real quality win is UNLV. Do they need to win out vs all non north carolina teams, plus get a win vs. Duke and/ or State to make the tourney?
Kurt: the bubble is so stinking soft, who knows? I nearly fell down when I saw that Lunardi had five from the Big 12. I'd say one quality win and they're in.
Don't you think Minnesota is a little high to be a five seed right now?--they beat a BAD Nebraska team and barely hung on against Iowa last week--yet they shot up five spots in the polls.
Matt: Totally with you. I think they've looked like a team on the ropes for a bit now. Think they could bounce back but right now, don't get it.
Why did I leave K-State? Even I don't understand!
Frank: Nicer weather?
Worst Uniforms? Michigan last night or Baylor last year in the tournament? I shouldn't have to wear shades to watch TV!
Jeremy: It looked like a highlighter festival. Both were equally awful. To me your uniform is your uniform. Dont get all this crazy stuff. Of course I went to Penn State and putting names on jerseys this season required a papal audience.
Setting asides your indifferences/dislike for UConn.Would you consider Kevin Ollie a strong candidate for Coach of the Year?Where would you rank Shabazz Napier (17.2ppg 4.4rpg 4.1apg 2.0apg) against other PG's in the Big East? For a group of kids, whom no one gave chance for even .500, tourney or not, they deserve some respect for what they're accomplishing.
Bob: Huh. I missed the part where I disliked UConn. Good to know. How do I feel about anchovies? To answer your question, I don't think Kevin Ollie will get coach of the year. Jim Larranaga should and will nationally. Within the league, who knows? Maybe Buzz Williams if they don't fall off the deep end. Definitely give a lot of props to that team for staying focused.
How far will Gonzaga go in the Tournament? Final Four?
Burt: It wouldn't stun me. I keep thinking that some sort of outlier will get there, someone we aren't paying enough attention to. Gonzaga fits the bill.
Where do you think Pitt will be seeded in the Dance when it is all said and done?
Eric: Not sure. 6 or 7 is a guess? Team is getting better, though. Finally playing Pitt-esque defense again.
So AZ has a better record, better RPI, better SoS, and won the head to head with Florida, also plays in a better league, has beaten two top 10 teams and you still Florida deserves #1 seed over AZ? How can you justify that?
Well I'm not sure the Pac 12 is better than the SEC for starters. They are both awful but at least FLorida will have to beat Kentucky and Missouri.
Dana, a lot Buckeye fans were complaining about the non-call, but to that I counter that Craft got away with a flagrant foul. You can't say that refs shouldn't decide a game on Craft's foul and then turn around and say the same thing on the other end. Agree? (and this doesn't even take into account the free 3 that Craft got on a shot clock violation and the offensive goaltending in the first half that wasn't called). Agree?
Tom: I felt horrible for the officials in that game, frankly. A lot of tough tough calls. Officials always say they call the game the same from start to finish, but I'm not sure that human nature allows that to occur. I thought Craft was fouled but I understood the no call.
Oddly, you are a fan of anchovies... just not UConn.
Good to know. I"ll be sure to tell myself that.
Thoughts on the Iowa State Cyclones - they are not getting a lot of press. I think Coach Fred - Mayor is doing an excellent job infusing his style. We had some tough losses to KU, OK State, Texas Tech and Iowa but I think they are building a good resume. Just have to close out games better, which I think Coach will address.
Bernie: I know Lunardi has them in this week. Overall I think Hoiberg is doing a good job, agreed. Not sure about this team - Texas Tech is a bad, bad, bad, bad, bad (shall I go on?) loss.
Whats your favorite bracketbuster matchup?
Nick: Kinda like Ohio-Belmont. DJ Cooper and Ian Clark, two under the radar guys who deserve some pub. Very good teams, both capable of upsetting a few in the tourney.
This season, it seems like there isn't a truly great team, but rather 5-8 very good teams. With that in mind, is this the year that a Butler, Creighton, or New Mexico type team could actually win it all?
Terrance: It very well could be. I do think MIchigan and Indiana have separted themselves a little bit, but I agree that this season should be a very wide open tourney. I prefer it that way.
PAC 12 is ranked 3rd in conference power ranking while the SEc is like 5th or 6th! YOu all just hate Arizona!
Yes and UConn. But I apparently like anchovies.
What seed do you see MSU getting come tournament time? 2, 3, 4? Seeing that game last night and watching what the Spartans have gone through with injuries being overcame early on and finally getting together.....could they climb high enough to snag a 1 seed?
Adam: Not sure about a 1 seed. I suppose if they win out, win the Big Ten Tourney, sure. I thought Michigan State was a sort of sleeper in October, if Tom Izzo can be a sleeper. Still think that's the case. Dangerous team. So long as good Keith Appling shows up consistently.
Buy or sell Louisville winning out and getting a 1 seed?
Matthew: Sell. Think they need a lot to go wrong for others at this point.
Do you think the Badgers have a good chance against Michigan at home on Saturday?
Nate: Good chance? Maybe not good but not impossible. Michigan has been through the ringer in back to back games and now goes to a tough place against a very well coached team. That's a hard run. Wouldn't be stunned if Badgers won.
Who u got in Belmont at Murray st tomorrow?
Dave: Eek. Tough one. Murray worried me against Austin Peay but I may have to go Racers on the home floor. Ought to be fun.
How many pros do you see on Indiana's roster?
Andy: Zeller, Oladipo.
Hi Dana! Even though Ohio State lost last night, I don't think you can punish them in the polls or seeding. What do you think?
Alex: Nope. I agree. Felt the same after Michigan lost to Indiana, which is why kept Wolverines 2nd in my power rankings. It was a great game, tough place, went OT. Not a bad loss.
Miami v. Duke March 2. Who do you like?
Mark: Can I answer after I watch Miami play North Carolina on Saturday? Looking forward to seeing the Canes in person.
Hi Dana, both Indiana and Ohio St. have looked great the last couple of weeks. Who do you like in that match up this weekend?
Craigh: Tough one. I think I lean Indiana. Ohio State coming off that tough loss to Michigan. But I'm counting on another BIg Ten gem.
If KU knocks off a tough newcomer to the Big 12 tonight in the Horned Frogs from Texas Christian, wouldn't you agree that a #1 overall seed in the Tourney would be merited? Seriously though, should KU be forced by legislation to play WSU?
Mike: YEs beating the Horned Frogs automatically qualifies everyone for a 1 seed. I don't think anyone should be forced by legislation to play anyone mostly because I hope our legislators have more important issues to handle.
Is Rick Barnes getting fired?
Matthew: No. Texas doesn't know he's still there. Or that it's basketball season. Or that there's a basketball team in town.
Hi Dana, should Cincinnati be on upset alert tonight?
Nick: Maybe. Think the Bearcats have been a little less impreessive lately and while Providence has been a rollercoaster, they've got the talent.
Dana: If you had one word to describe UK's current team what would it be? Also do you believe they can challenge florida if they continue to improve as they have over ther past couple of weeks?
Brandon: Workinprogress (that's three words smushed together). I think the Wildcats have a very small margin for error and still seem to lack confidence/focus at times. That said, they have the talent to beat anyone, including Florida.
You've said in previous chats that Phil Martelli is not on the hot seat. But in your opionion, should he be if st. joe's misses NCAA's, which would mean one NCAA tournament game since 2004.
Tom: No, I don't think so. i agree that he's failed to capitalize on the Jameer run adequately and understand the frustration but they've been decent, not chronically awful. And he's done an awful lot for that school.
How close is Wichita State to the bubble, in the midst of their 3 game Valley losing streak? Or they treading on thin ice or does the week bubble still provide them some cushion?
Justin: Lunardi says not to worry yet, or even begin to think about worrying. I trust him.
Hi Dana should steve Donahue be on the hot seat?
Bob: Absolutely not. He hasn't been there long enough. It's not like he inherited a national champion.
Do you see UVA making the tournament?
William: Think the Cavaliers, barring mroe big wins, will be a bubble watcher for a while. 0-3 against the CAA, including one of Old Dominion's two losses, is not good.
What do you think happens with Ben Howland? Any chance he saves his job?
Cam: It is going to be interesting. Obvioulsy Shabazz's flu deal gives them an asterisk to the loss to USC (even though he played) but it's still not a great team. I wouldn't be surprised if he tried for another job to get out before the posse got him.
Arizona: Contender or pretender?
Shane: I'm not sure. Think they've got some very good pieces and could put it together but still not sure about them. Lyons makes me nervous at the point.
Crystal Ball time: Who's going to win the Pac-12?
As of today, can you please rank your Top 5 title contenders? Thanks.
Adam: Ack. Not easy and not saying this will play out but if going on logic I'd say: 1. Indiana 2. Michigan 3. Gonzaga 4. Kansas 5. Louisville (with Ohio State, Michigan State, Florida, Arizona also in mix).
Best Freshman this year?
Jared: Ben McLemore.
DanaWhat team currently not ranked do you see making a FF run?
Justin: I truly don't see that happening but if pressed to name a few, I'd say VCU, NC State and Kentucky.
Cmon answer my question, especially since you just ranked the top title contenders and didnt even put in Duke.... wow, anti Duke much>?
I honest to God forgot them. Duke is in there. So is Miami.
How about this for First Team All America? Trey Burke, Victor Oladipo Ben Mclemore, Doug McDermott, and Cody Zeller
Victor: I could live with that. Maybe Deshaun Thomas, if he finishes strong, or Plumlee.
Minnesota at MSU who do you like?
Michigan State. Think Spartans are getting very good.
Is New Mexico on upset alert tonight?
Ben: Nah. Think Lobos got this one.
What do you make of the A10? Just as Butler and VCU were starting to separate themselves, they've fallen into slumps recently. Are they still the teams to beat?
Jason: It's a little bit of a mess right now. I still think VCU and Butler are the best teams in the league but I'm not sure if all of this beating up on one another will help them in the long run.
Just wait till I am healthy....
Better shot blocker...Noel or Withey?
Bob: Can I just say both? Both block shots and alter shots.
Brad Stevens...where is his next stop?
Does Arkansas have a chance at the tourney after beating Florida--assuming they start putting some wins together, especially road wins. I know they have a bad loss against South Carolina.
Rod: One win does not a postseason resume make. Need a lot more than just one win.
You don't Brad will ever leave Butler?
Maybe someday. Maybe not. No time soon.
Do you think the Glenn Robinson III punch on Hulls was intentional? Personally I thought it was unfortunate, but he was trying to free himself from Watford...
Garrick: Heard about it. DIdn't see it. Was away most of Monday-Tuesday with my kids.
Pick 1 and why: Nate Wolters or Trey Burke
Cody: For what? My team? Trey Burke. Think Wolters is special. Think Burke is even moreso.
Who is the best pure scorer you have seen since covering college basketball?
Adam: Gah. I'd have to think on that one. I mean there are scorers like Jimmer Fredette and scorers like Carmelo Anthony. Different styles, equally effective.
Top 5 coaches you would start your team with? Regardless of year, who are the best coaches in the game?
MIke Krzyzewski, Tom Izzo, Brad Stevens, Rick Pitino, John Beilein.
Does Sean Miller stay at Arizona for the long haul like Lute, or does he bolt once an elite job at Duke, UNC, UK, etc. open up?
Scott: Isn't Arizona a pretty elite job? I think Sean thinks it is.
Woah Woah Woah... I'm not sure family time is allowed
I know. I know. Damned kids.
Pat Forde or Jeff Goodman? Pick One.
Charlotte 17-4 via an awful non conference, but 5 huge A10 games coming up; Temple(A) VCU(H) Butler(A) SLU(A) and Temple(H), How many of those games do they need to win to get into the at large picture?
Andrew: Um, many. 4 or 5.
Dana take out Beilein out and insert Self and I could go for that.
That's the problem with those sorts of lists. I'd add Self in a heartbeat. And Bob Huggins.
could victor Oladipo win defensive POTY nationally with out winning it in the big ten defensive POTY due the reputation arron craft has in confrence?
Chris: I suppose so. Both are terrific. I don't think Crafy is smoke and mirrors reputation only. He's legit.
Who from the Big 12 will make the dance this year?
Garrett: I thnk Lunardi has Kansas, KState, Baylor, Iowa State and Oklahoma. Ack if you ask me
Will Northwestern ever make the tourney? Is Carmody out--or is Northwestern just being patient since nobody wants this job.
Bill: Lost his best player this year. Can't fire him now.
Are you flying out right after the game on Saturday? If not, could I interest you in a charity event Saturday night?
Mark: Thanks for the offer but have a dinner date with my dad, who lives in Florida for the winter. And it's my birthday, so he wins.
Will I even make the NCAAs?
Probalby yes. But if things don't pick up, don't pack a big bag.
If you had to compete against a group of aliens who had stolen the talent of NBA players and you could only have one NCAA player and 4 looney tunes who would be your starting 5?
Bugs Bunny (he beat the Gashouse Gorillas single handedly), the Roadrunner for speed, Yosemite Sam. Excellent point guard capabilities. Foghorn Leghorn. Need some height and Victor Oladipo. He'd enjoy playing with them.
Alright folks. Thanks for the questions. Chat with you all next week.
