We've got Joe!
What was your reaction to the Tide commercial?
I thought it was pretty fun. At first when you hear the concept, it makes sense, but the way they did it and pulled it off it was fun. You know not only our players have superstitions but also our fans and husbands and wives pulling for different teams. Though I wish she hadn't been right and the 49ers had won!
Besides Jerry Rice who was your favorite WR to throw to?
There was a guy named Dwight Clark and John Taylor. If it wasn't for Jerry Rice, John Taylor may have been Jerry Rice. He just didn't get enough balls because Jerry Rice was such a big target.
What will you remember most about playing at Candlestick?
That it's over. Candlestick was fun, but it was not a fun place to play. We probably had the worst field of anywhere. Fans will really appreciate the new stadium when they get to an actual football stadium for viewing. So much different.
How does it feel to be associated with the golden age of 49er football?
I was very fortunate to be around as the organization changed. Mr. DeBartolo had recently been there, brought in Bill Walsh. They turned it all around. It was a great time to play.
Joe what were your thoughts on the debated no call on fourth down at the end of the game? Also do you think this was one of the greatest Super Bowl's in recent memory?
I wish I had seen it, the replay, which I haven't. But any time there are guys hands on each other, it's a tough call. You could probably call it either way. As a 49er fan and former player, it's not what I would have liked to have seen, but there are probably a bunch of plays like that. I know the official had a tough decision.
Were you aware of your part in the Tide commercial before it aired?
I wasn't a part of the planning at all. They had come to us with the concept beforehand and we really liked it and even more so the commercial when it came out.
Hi Joe, Is it harder to repeat as Super Bowl Champions now than in 20 or 30 years ago? And where do you think Alex Smith will play in 2013?
They have a pretty good team, so I would say no. I'm not going to say its more difficult now, but I wouldn't say it's any less difficult. They have a good shot as long as they can keep their team together. The first thing is to get Flacco signed and rumor has it he's going no where.
Do you stay involved with Notre Dame in any way?
I don't. Some things happened on the way out of there with my son. I follow Notre Dame. I love Notre Dame.
what are your thoughts on randy moss saying he is the greatest receiver of all time especially that you played with arguably the greatest of all time jerry rice.
He should have been checked for a concussion right away.
Hi Joe, how do you feel about the rule changes regarding player safety?
I understand what they're trying to do. I think sometimes on the QB side we're looking at the wrong part. Instead of the hit, guys get hit, it's when they get compressed to the ground is where the injuries happen. Once you let go of the ball and those guys get you off balance, you can't protect yourself. From that point on, they're only trying to hurt you. If I were trying to protect the QB, I would go about it differently than they are now. QBs don't mind getting hit, it's the compression into the ground.
What was your favorite part of being a Chief
The fans were crazy. It might have been the loudest place I ever played. Before I went out to the first game, Marty our head coach said you're not going to believe it when we got out for the first game. He said the crowd is going to be so loud. It was a different experience playing as the home team. He was right. What they do with the national anthem, wow. At the end of the song, when they say "home of the brave" they say Chiefs instead. It's crazy.
Joe, with an amazing and fullfilling career, is there anything you regret about your career that you didn' accomplish or did do which you wish you didn't do?
I wish I would have made it to the Super Bowl with the Chiefs. We had a good opportunity, but we let down our guard and lost our last game. Instead of playing Buffalo at home, we had to go there and it was miserable.
Does it bother you when people say you had a weak arm. I think you got it there a lot quicker than people think.
It's not always about arm strength. The thing most people don't realize, I could throw it 60-70 yards easily, but you don't have to throw it hard. It takes a certain way to throw the ball to get completions. I was taught that by Bill Walsh. You'll see with guys with big arms and they'll try to stick it into a tight situation and the DBs will knock it down. I was taught to throw it out front and the DB can't get to it. Look in the game, how many times did you see the ball thrown over 30-40 yards?
Any more commercials for you? Next years Super Bowl?
I don't know. We'll have to wait and see. But I don't know if I will be in New York. I don't know if I can handle that!
I appreciate, as always, the fans support. Hopefully the 49ers will get back to the Super Bowl soon.
Thanks for chatting Joe!
