Greetings. Hope everyone had a great signing day. Shoot.
How much will the size of USC's recruiting class impact their upcoming season?
I don't think it will be a big deal for the upcoming season. USC has a lot of guys coming back on both sides of the ball. I'm sure a lot of the guys who signed will play. The issue will be more going forward. Four years from now, the Trojans will have a very small senior class out front of program.
Bad sign Dykes signed the worst Cal recruiting class since Tom Holmoe?
No... you can't blame a new coach for a class he had a limited time to work on. And Cal's class was pretty good considering, generally considered fifth in the Pac-12.
Ted,Enjoyed your all the offhand humor you mix into your sports blogging.Ever publish anything--like a short story, novella, whatever--not related to sports?Ever had any ambitions of doing so (I swear I will not contact your current employer about your plans if you do)?
Thanks, and, Yes... I wrote all of Daniel Woodrell's novels. I think a lot of journalists have dreams of writing the Next Great American Novel. Or just publishing a book. Problem is you spend all day in front of your computer writing. Difficult to say, "Hey, after a long day of writing, I'm going to write more!"
Does Oregon have the top cornerback combo in the country?
maybe... at least one of the best.
Ted, which Pac-12 recruiting classes stood out to you? Which school did the best job in your opinion? Thanks!
UCLA really surged after getting a good class with Mora in year one. A lot of momentum in Westwood. I think Washington continues to make a positive move.
Ted - Who ends up winning Pac 12 coach of the year next season?
I thought the Sun Devils made great strides under Graham in his first year. JC transfers rarely contribute to a high degree, and ASU signing so many JC players to me looks pretty desperate.
I am as skeptical on JC guys as anyone, though I think four of the nine have 3 years of eligibility. It seemed that Graham saw holes he needed to immediately fill, including issues at WR & in his secondary. And that JC DT is supposed to be ready to go immediately and could bolster a good D-line.
Ted, whom has better pro career, Dion Jordan or Kyle Long?
That is a good question... Jordan is expected to be a first-round draft choice. If he stays healthy, I'd say him. But Long is the sort who could play 10 years and be an all-pro by year three.
Will I ever see a rose bowl in my lifetime? Age: 25
Where does Arizona's recruiting class fall in the P12 pecking order?
In the middle, but my impression is Rodriguez and his staff have a good eye for talent, see what they did at West Virginia. It would have been better if you could say with confidence, "This guy is going to get 10 sacks in a season before he is done."
I believe UCLA and WA got a little boost from the small classes USC and Stanford signed this year. Who do you think will be impacted the most when all schools are going after full classes?
Great point... two of the better recruiting schools were limited, though for different reasons. USC will always have the biggest impact in recruiting because it's USC. The immediate challenge will be to crosstown rival UCLA when the Trojans are again signing 25, but all Pac-12 schools have to hit southern California hard in recruiting.
Who finishes higher in the North, "over achieving" OSU or "under achieving" UW?
I like the Huskies in third, Beavers fourth in the division next fall.
How do you see Matt Barkley's pro career going?
Depends on the fit. It might actually help not getting picked at the top of the draft. Give him some time to learn from a veteran. I'd like him to do well because I think he's a high-character guy.
Chances of Marcus Mariota winning a Heisman before he leaves?
As good as any player in the Pac-12. If he improves just slightly on his 2012 numbers, he may go to new york this go-around.
Any recruits in the beavers pick ups you think we should keep a close eye on? Mike Riley tends to make diamonds out of coal!
Dashon Hunt could see action in the secondary next fall. And the Beavers really, really need those JC DTs to step up and be ready to play.
Ted - Will Keith Price finish next season as Washington's starting QB?
Yes... I think Price will win the comeback player of the year.
Will Utah be ready for Michigan by 2014?
Yes. I think 2013 might be a bit of a struggle, but Travis Wilson should be all grown up by the time Michigan comes calling.
What is up with Priest Willis not signing yesterday? Is it possible he is interested in SC now that they signed only 1 cornerbacK?
Anything is possible but what I read was he was solid with UCLA. USC did pretty well on safeties itself.
Give your assessment of changes you'll see with Oregon's offense in 2013 under Helfich?
I think Helfirch will pass more than Kelly did, but I'm not sure Kelly wouldn't have done the same if he were still around. You have an experienced QB with a nice arm and a veteran crew of receivers. And some questions at RB. I think it will be the same up-tempo pace.
What happens with a player who doesn't sign on signing day? Can he still get a scholarship?
yes... signing day is just a date. A guy could opt to sign in March or June if he wanted. And was offered. In fact, he could opt not to sign a letter of intent. He could just show up and sign scholarship papers.
Ted - How many games would Stanford win in the SEC next season?
7 of 8 conference games.
What are the Cougs chance of winning at Auburn for their opener?
Yes...Auburn is coming off a poor season and fired its coach. There might be some transition the Cougs can take advantage of. But issues on both lines don't make it a good bet.
What means more to you - a recruit's star rating or what schools are recruiting him?
A lot of times star ratings are based on who is recruiting a guy. If Alabama, USC and Notre Dame are all after a guy, I'd think he'd be pretty good. So I say the schools are more important that star ratings.
Ted - Single most valuable player in the conference for next season is?
Which current Pac-12 QB is the best NFL prospect?
Mariota... though Hundley deserves note.
Ted, which teams from the North and South will have the best defenses next year?
Stanford in the north. South is more difficult. I'll say Arizona State.
If the conference can only pick one thing to fix before next season, would you prefer they change the over zealous refs or the DirectTV deal?
The conference would rather get a deal done with Direct TV. We cable folks would rather see better officiating.
What do you think about ASU not taking a QB in the recruiting class for the 2nd year in a row? With 3 capable QBs, the Sun Devils are a transfer and injury away from being down to one QB.
I'm sure it worries Graham, who had a good QB from Georgia but lost him to Tennessee on signing day. He might look for a stop-gap guy in the coming weeks. But let's just say the 2 guys Taylor Kelly beat out are suddenly very valuable. All 3 QBs have at least 2 years of eligibility left.
Erickson to Utah, thoughts?
Interesting if it gets done... wondering how Brian Johnson would feel about it. It will be important he embraces the opportunity to learn from a guy who knows his stuff.
Way too early prediction on USC/UCLA game and seasons?
I see the Bruins as nose-to-nose with Arizona State atop the South. I see the Trojans third. So I like the Bruins next fall to keep the Victory Bell.
How much of a production drop, if any, will Marquis Lee have next season?
I think he will drop significantly because the Trojans will break in a new QB. Kiffin will want more balance than he had in 2012 anyway. Lee will still put up nice numbers because he's so good and there's no Robert Woods with whom to share touches. But I'd guess he'll be well under 132 yard per game.
Mannion or Vaz ?
I think when healthy and confident Mannion looks like a future NFL QB. Needs to have fewer multi-INT games. Obviously, Riley leans toward Vaz.
Percent chance the Pac-12 CG includes a team that is not Stanford, Oregon, UCLA, or ASU?
18.5 percent... My first thought is USC or Washington could surprise some folks. I'm going for a less certain posture after my certainty over USC-Oregon last summer.
Long time listener, first-time caller. Does Pendergrast and the 3-4 show off SC's linebacker skills and make everyone realize they always had huge talent but were improperly used under Monte?
I like the Pendergast hire. I wonder if it will be all 3-4. Might see some hybrid looks. I know Kiffin likes the 4-3 better. I think Pendergast has a better grasp of what he's up against in the Pac-12. So, yes, I think USC fans should expect a significantly better defense in 2013.
With Utah signing 3 QBs and having played a true freshman last year? Who starts next year?
I think it will be Wilson.
Ted, you are a 17 year old 4-star athlete. Who did you sign with yesterday?
Ted - Should Oregon be worried about RB depth?
It is a question. Is Byron marshall ready to be the guy? How many carries can you give DAT? And what about Tyner? It's not a huge worry, but it's a question.
Hey Ted, what are your thoughts on the eventual Colorado vs. Nebraska series set to take place in 2021 I belive.
I know Colorado folks will love seeing their friends from Nebraska again. A very warm relationship. I think any quality nonconference game is a good thing. And renewing a rivalry with an A-list foe is pretty cool.
Crystal ball time: Is Lane Kiffin USC's head coach this time next year?
I'm 50-50. Let's see what USC looks like out of the gate. I think Kiffin is a smart, talented guy. If he learned some tough lessons this year, he could find his stride. But there's also plenty of reason to be skeptical.
The possibility that ASU has the top overall defense in the conference? They got some DL to help out I think that it could happen
The Sun Devils should be good on D, but they struggled against the run last year and have some voids in the secondary. And replacing Brandon Magee won't be that easy because of his leadership. One of my all-time favorite players.
Ted, let me know when you're in Philly next - we'll have a cheesesteak and beer and reminisce about old times...
You got it ... Pats or Genos?
Chance of Oregon going undefeated next year? If not, who do they lose to?
Best chance to lose is at Stanford. I'd say 20 percent undefeated. Tough conference next year.
Who has the toughest schedule in the PAC next year? easiest?
Cal has the toughest. .. Oregon has a favorable schedule. ..
Is it getting harder or easier to stick up for the Pac-12 compared to the B1G, Big-12 and SEC?
Can Dykes return Cal to a bowl next season.
I think Cal will be better next fall but the schedule will make it tough to get six wins.
How do you think Utah's all around level of talent compares to the rest of the Pac 12?
Utah has proven competitive, but it lacks the overall depth of most other Pac-12 teams. I think it will be a gradual process. You'd think it would take 4 Pac-12 recruiting classes to really expect Utah to challenge for the top half.
How many games will ASU win in their 4 game stretch against Wisconsin - Stanford - Notre Dame - USC?
How do I keep my assistant coaches around especially the new additions that got me this good recruiting class?
Most of those guys have been loyal to you a long time. The best way to keep assistant coaches is to pay them well and treat them right. I know you do the latter as well as anyone.
Thoughts on Kiffin stating that USC is going back to physical practices at his press conf? Seems that was a huge difference between PC lead teams and Kiff teams.
I think it's a good thing. You can't play afraid. You can't stop playing football to avoid injuries. I like the idea of competition Tuesdays coming back.
Do I play or redshirt next fall?
It would be ideal for you to redshirt because that would mean a QB already on the roster who knows the offense steps up. But I'd guess you see some action. Need so see how you adjust to the college game before that take is more than a hunch.
With chip gone and several new coaches, who is the brightest offensive mind in the pac12?
Which of the Pac-12's new QBs has the best chance at starting this year? Which will be the best in 3 years?
Max Browne at USC. & I think he'll be the best, too.
Does the Vegas Bowl gain statue if the new stadium gets built?
A new stadium is nice, but a bowl gains prestige if it pays out more.
Who from UW's class do you see as having an instant impact next season?
Damore'ea Stringfellow... he should give Price another A-list target.
What is the biggest story for the Ducks heading into the spring my man?
that you have a new coach... and you should be in the national title hunt. Again.
Can't believe an hour has already flown by...you should add a tagline to the PAC12 chat..."fastest hour in sports blogging" - actually I'm sure you could come up with something better...
ha... thanks for that.
Should I book any tickets to a warm december location in 2013? or maybe 2014
I think the Cougs have a solid shot to get to 6 wins, but I'd rate the over-under at 5.
how much does it hurt or not hurt asu for not getting a qb after 2 recruiting classes and losing Dobbs to the Vols??
I answered this earlier... it's an issue. Need the 2 backups to stick around more than ever. Guessing Graham will add a guy.
OK gang... time for me to hit the road. Thanks for stopping by.
