What's up everyone!
How's it going? Who do you see stepping up for Uconn as a deep-threat at receiver this year with thEir new OC?
Great question, Shawn. Although I do want to caution you for just a second. Cincinnati did not really have many deep threats at receiver over the last couple of years. If the running game is the strength of the team, then I can pretty much guess that is what UConn will do. Cincinnati became a running team the last few years. Now as to your question, I want to see Davis and Phillips emerge as big-time playmakers. I know they were No. 1-2 last year in receptions but they can be even better.
Now that we are developing depth at the QB position (even if Laglow doesn't sign with us) is there anything else holding us back from winning the current league after next years moves every year? We have an offensive minded coach, the best facilities on the East Coast, and history shows that given time Uconn teams can ultra competitive regardless of the sport. I know people look down at us after just 12 years I think we are doing pretty well.
Yeah. Coaching. I believe that is what has held this team back the last two years.
And QB play. Just because there are a lot of bodies does not mean that is going to be automatically upgraded!
Is Willie Taggart the real deal? Will USF finally live up to expectations with him at the helm? What are your thoughts Andrea?
USF fans are not going to want to hear what I have to say on this so they should just close their eyes for a second. I think he is the real deal and I think he will deliver USF its first BE championship in the next 3 years. WUT!
I thought Pasqualoni had a pretty good recruiting class this year, all things considered. What do you think he needs to do to keep his job this year? Will 7-5 and a bowl do it?
I thought he did, too. Gave him a shout out in my recruiting roundup for tomorrow morning. I think bowl game gets him to keep his job absolutely. He has to show signs he is moving in the right direction.
The quality of the football facilities has been said to be a big factor in determining which school a recruit will pick. Could you and Tuna rank the facilities in the Big East? You could include good pionts/bad pionts and who is planning to upgrade. Just a thought. Thanks!
I believe we did that last year, Steve. It is tough for me to rank facilities when I have not been to most of them, especially the incoming schools. And just because I think one facility is beautiful does not mean a recruit does. Teenagers think much differently than a 35-year old female!
AA, good recruiting recaps not only on the BE Blog but the ACC Blog as well. I noticed that Pitt and Cuse were recapped under the ACC. Question - where does this year's Louisville recruiting class fit among the ACC schools' recruiting classes?
Thank you! The ACC had six classes ranked in the Top 40; Louisville was not. So somewhere in below those six schools.
As far as I can tell, this was UConn's best recruiting class in quite some time. Sure, it's still marginal by SEC standards, but a man has to have hope, does he not? ;-)
I think PP did very well for himself, yes.
Are you planning trips to the incoming schools during spring practice to get a better feel for them? I'm sure you could see facilities then. Short drive to UCF.
Those decisions are left to the home office in Bristol. I have seen UCF's facilities many times already, Scott! Hardy har har.
Some recruiting publications have graded the BE (new teams included) with average grades. Is this due to all the movement of teams and the uncertainty of the league?
I don't hand out the grades so I can't really say.
Do u think tulane will be good in the Big eaqst confrence?
Hard to project two years down the line. They have to be better in CUSA first.
Is White a viable option at QB - I am not really liking Floyd or Eveld
I do not think you are alone there, Larry. Not sure what is going to happen at QB or if White is a viable option. Gotta wait to see what he looks like in practice before we start talking about that. QB depth still concerns me at USF.
AA - I almost passed on on the 3 year championship idea - I know that hurt you to write :)
It only hurt because I have been so wrong on this team the last two years. My ego might take another hit with a prediction like that.
Well USF isn't winning it this year so after that all the pretty good teams are gone. No more WVU, UL,PITT, CUSE and it's really no longer the Big East. So I would hope USF could finally step up and win the league with what's left.
Hopes and wishes and whiskers on kittens. The time is now for the Bulls. I think everybody realizes that. But then again, a lot of people thought the time was now when they were No. 2 in the country. So ...
Andrea, I promise not to intentionally set off our lovely UCF fan blog readers today...unintentionally I make no promises. I'll start out with a Rutgers coaching change comment...its time to start over, what does Rutgers have to lose? What I'm saying is, its time to stop plugging holes in the coaching staff and time to bring in a new coaching staff that has continuity and chemistry, a staff with a mix of college and NFL experience that can bring some excitement back to Piscataway. Flood may be a very nice guy and a good coach, but with the move to the B1G, Rutgers needs MORE than a nice guy and a good coach, Rutgers needs an entire coaching staff that can recruit at top levels and maximize potential if we dream to compete with the upper and mid-level tier of the B1G. Top recruits want to know they'll be coached to reach the League, while also competing for championships, does anyone think Coach Flood can assemble a coaching staff that will achieve either of these ultimate goals?
OK stop it! Please! All the Rutgers fans who want Kyle Flood gone after one year need to step away from the keyboard and take a deep breath. Do you think Rutgers is the only staff that has lost coaches this year?! C'mon! Just about every staff in America loses coaches. There is no such thing as continuity on college football staffs. Not anymore, anyway.
Schiano strikes again! At least this time he waited until after signing day. Does Smith's moving hurt Rutgers overall? Will recruits begin to wonder if their position coach or coordinator be there when the practices begin?
The timing is terrible, no doubt about it. But there is never a good time for a coach to leave. The timing is always terrible. This is why players should pick a program based on the program and not a favored coach. No guarantees anybody is going to stick around.
USF getting a BE championship in the next three years? This year is out due to the QB and RB situation. Next year may only be a modest improvement. I think all your marbles may be in the 2015 season. I hope you're right. Go Bulls!
Do not underestimate the power of the Bus Driver. If he could do it in 3 years at Western Kentucky, I would say he can do it in 3 years at USF.
Rob - UCF loves you.
AA, I saw in your earlier post today that Walter Stewart has received an invitation to the NFL combine. I was under the impression that his injury was career ending. Will he be able to perform to NFL standards if he can play and how much will his injury effect his draft position?
Josh, I need to update that post to put in a little more information on Walter. I should have done that when I typed up the post. I think he is going just to get tested out by the NFL docs to see if he has a future or not. Cincinnati docs, James Andrews told him no. I just think he wants a definitive answer from the pros before he moves on with his life after football.
Andrea, I appreciate your coverage of the Big East. USF recruited a couple running backs. Do you think they will see action this year, or redshirt?
Too hard to start predicting who is going to play but I will say that RB is a major area of need for USF. So getting them was huge for depth development. They could play.
Andrea, Rutgers fans don't want Kyle Flood gone because he is a bad coach, I think you are missing the point, Rutgers fans are tired of constantly having to replace assistant coaches and we also know that there are MUCH BETTER options out there that can lead us into the Big Ten...take former PSU Def Coordinator Tom Bradley for instance, proven track record of recruiting at a high level and turning out NFL caliber talent and winning in the Big Ten. The point is, while its fair to defend Coach Flood, and I think he has done an admirable job, I, and I'm not alone, think that Rutgers needs to shoot higher for the impending move to a new conference.
Tom Bradley? There is a reason why he has never been a head coach before, and after that shameful situation at Penn State, Rutgers cannot possibly even think about hiring him. You just cannot fire him after one year because you *Think* you can do better with the Big Ten move on the horizon.
Many may not want to hear this, but if Flood was to bring Ron Prince on, it would be to help establish ties into the mid-west. With the LB from Mich, RU has begun to transition towards B1G recruiting/coaching.
It's possible, but I don't see Rutgers moving away from its current recruiting base. That's where a majority of the talent is anyway. There's a reason Ohio and Michigan go into Florida to recruit.
I noticed that in your recruiting recap, you said Louisville left holes to fill at the running back position? On the roster, they have insane depth at that position. Dominique Brown, Corvin Lamb, Senorise Perry (if he's healthy), Brandon Radcliff. I think Charlie did a pretty good job all around.
Depth for this year. Perry, Brown and Wright are seniors I believe.
Now that signing day is over. Who had the biggest pick up in the Big East and who had the biggest flip?
Post covers that tomorrow, stay tuned!
Scott (from Orlando), I have PSU season tickets on top of being a Rutgers fan (PSU alum), come up next year for the UCF-PSU game and we'll tailgate together...
Hi Andrea,Do you think syracuse will ever be able to compete with the big boys and win some of these recruiting battles?
I don't think they will compete with the likes of Alabama. Not many can. But they did a good job making bigger inroads into the south this year and I think they should continue that trend.
Dom Brown for UofL redshirted and never played a down in 2012. He will be a Junior this year.
Yes you are right, I stand corrected.
What do you think the odds are that Cincinnati wins the Big East next year? I know everyone is already sold on Louisville going undefeated and winning the Big East, but Cincinnati always surprises. I think that Tommy T may have a few tricks up his sleeve that will be able to give a lot of teams a lot of fits.
I would give them less than 25 percent chance?
You mention FL for RU recruiting, but hasn't that all left with Schiano and his charges? And without having future games (past UCF this year) in FL, should RU fans be worried that this pipeline dries up?
I think that would be a grave mistake for Rutgers to stop recruiting the area.
I knew deep down Rob was a nice guy, just needed to show the UCF love for him. I appreciate the invite and let's follow up as the season approaches. Thanks big guy!
Hardest position to recruit is? most important? considering your in the big east and you not starting from scratch?
I always think the toughest to recruit is offensive line. You are projecting out with that position because nearly all of them have to redshirt to get themselves better. Then some of them don't pan out as offensive linemen and you are stuck like chuck.
Are Syacuse fans still welcome, or on we on the ACC boards now?
Yes you are always welcome here, I cover both leagues. The official move begins next Tuesday!
With the limited spots Strong had to fill I thought his class was pretty good. 5 four stars, an ESPN 300 and an ESPN 150. I read somewhere that he went for quality over quantity.
I do not hand out grades or do the ratings, but I thought he ended up with a good class based on some of those stars. He beat UK for the top talent in-state so that has to count for something.
I'm ok with giving the Bearcats 25% chances... It's worked for them a majority of the time the past 6 years... :)
Andrea, I'm going to miss our little debates when Rutgers moves over to the B1G and both of my teams are over on that chat...maybe you can make a guest appearance over there some time...
You will like BB and Ritt. Promise.
I've visited the B1G chat room, not feeling them. Still wish you were coming, but I just have to get my fill this year and come back for visits; from time to time. I am addicted to your candor, straightforwardness, and honesty. Much luv and respect Ms A.A.
Hey it's love on AA day. Thank you Mr. Edd!
Do you see a bunch of games in the near future between SMU/Houston and the Big 12 Texas schools? -(Baylor, TCU, Texas, etc). I think that would be great for the Big East 'south' as it develops ps- you rock AA!
Thank you! SMU has got a bunch of games lined up with TCU and Baylor through 2019 so that is definitely a positive for the Big East. Not sure about Texas, though.
In the state of FL, the Gator/Nole rivalry has always been and will always be the biggest event in college football. Do you think the USF/UCF game will ever develop into such a large event?
No, I don't. Don't have fan bases that are even close as big and as passionate as FSU and Florida. It's the truth.
Valentine's Day has come early for AA! Life is like a box of chocolates...
You can mail that box of chocolates to Orlando, Fla. They know where to find me ...
I watched the Sugar Bowl again last night. Still awesome to see.
I am sure that will never get old for UL fans.
Do you think rutgers defense can be strong next year or was losing all that talent and now def coord going to be too much to overcome?
I do have concerns over the Rutgers defense for next year. It was going to be tough enough losing all their stud players. Now they are rebuilding with a new coordinator? Now granted it will probably be Dave Cohen, who was on staff last year. But it is going to be another shift in personality with a bunch of young, inexperienced players on the field. That is a big unknown.
Hey AA. Tommy Tuberville said he expects 15 players from the 2013 recruiting class to play this upcoming season. Pick 1 player on offense & 1 on defense that will have a huge impact. I think Rodriguez Moore on offense & Jerrel Jordan on defense.
These questions are too tough to answer right now. I haven't seen any of these guys play!
Just thinking Louisville could have the deepest and most talented receiving core on the country next year.Parker,Quick,Copeland,Rogers,Gaines,Harris,Benjamin,Milton,Clark...........Your thoughts?
Louisville will definitely have the top receiving group in the Big East. That is indisputable. The country? Perhaps.
NOTE to ALL BE EAST TEAMS: The sack man's coming, last name Lynch. if your quarterback is slow, he's gonna get benched!!!!
Yes, looking forward to seeing the debut of Aaron Lynch.
You kidding me? I live in Gator Country in Jacksonville and we beat them in the elite 8 and in the Sugar Bowl. I have been flying my flag and wearing my stuff all over this town.
Hey Big Guns! What say you to this proposition?... You had JJ and Graham tied in the rankings of 2012 players. I give Graham the nod here because against the best defense either team faced last year, he gashed Notre Dame for 172 yards and nearly led them to the W.
You bring up an excellent point here on Ray. That stands as the highest rushing total on ND. BUT ... he largely racked up those yards on two big carries. He was nonexistent late in the game when Pitt needed to run out the clock. And you saw what happened to Rutgers when JJ got hurt. So I equaled 'em!
Now that you work on a team on both the ACC & the Big East Blog, who do you think is the better blogger? My money is on HD (not even close)
Yup. My money, too.
AA, Under the circumstances. I think Coach Tuberville ended up with a great recruiting class.
I think we will know more about this class in two years ...
I agree with *Doug* up there. I expect vast improvement on USF's D-line this season. Do you have a bead on whether or not we can expect any improvement in our abominable defensive back play? #teamtaggart
Considering they signed a billionty defensive backs and one of the top DB coaches in the country, my early guess is help is definitely on the way.
Andrea, did you just say that HD is much better that Tuna? That you'd put money on it?...wonder what he has to say about that...
I thought he was saying HD is better than me!
Joe, can you please confirm whether I read that question correctly?
With 6 Scarlet Knights being invited to the NFL combine, does that speak to how scouts feelm about the talent level of RU this past season?
I don't think you have to be an NFL scout to see the obvious. Though DC Jefferson has always been an enigma, amiright?
One thing I have noticed all the players at Louisville I have heard have been really already getting after it in the weight room and conditioning. They really seem focused so early after the season ended. Also wait til you see this kid Quick play....awesome.
They should be focused, they have a chance to go undefeated!
Whatever happened to that QB from Massillon that threw such a fit with the way Tuberville treated him? Did he end up with Jones in Tenn?
Looks like he signed with ... Oregon State. That one came out of left field?
Kyle Kempt is his name, by the way. http://espn.go.com/college-sports/football/recruiting/player/_/id/128830/kyle-kempt
so Notre Dame indicating sticking with BBall etc for another year (next year)in BE...what do you believe is reason for this.
I mean there is a 27-month waiting period ...
Hey Andrea! i follow all your posts on big east football. Im a die hard Louisville fan, but I was just wondering if you had any thoughts on who would be the biggest freshman to come and make an instant impact in the big east this year?
Thank you, Jarret. It is really too tough to say right now a day after signing day. Quick is an obvious choice, but Louisville is so deep and talented a receiver it could very easily be somebody else like a Nadir Barnwell for Rutgers.
Anything new on the TV Deal? Is there an expected time for this to be figured out?
Haven't heard anything new on that front. There is no timetable, obviously sooner rather than later. We are supposed to talk to the commish next week maybe he can clear things up a little.
How many stars did Ray Rice have coming out of HS? 3? I heard somwhere that Kaepernick was a 3 star. Much ado about nothing.
Kaepernick had ONE offer. From Nevada. So yes. Much ado about nothing indeed. You have read my previous chats!
I asked if HD was better than Matt (which is an obvious YES)
Well, I misread the question. It is obvious that HD is way better than AA. But I could never choose between my fellow co-workers, who are both terrific wonderful human beings and great PEOPLE!
Brandon Marshall from UCF (Pro Bowl) was 2 star
We could go on and on like this ...
Is Louisville trying to schedule a home game against a national power for this next season?
All I know is Charlie Strong said yesterday they were working on it. But I have no other details.
Jason Piere Paul was a 3 star also
You are WAY better than Matt and slightly better than than HD
Well that is nice of you to say but it is definitely not true!
AA: Two years? Louisville will find out this fall how good a recruiting class the Bearcats ended up with this year. Oh, I'm sorry. I'm getting old. UC will be ranked to come in, in 5th or 6th place in the BE in 2013. I'm just tired of hearing about Louisville.
You and all the other UC Fans.
When UC upsets Louisville this season remember I said it
OK I will remember. I think.
AA, given that Smith had more rushing yards and a better YPC average than both Graham and JJ, with a tougher OOC, how is he ranked below them?
I ranked the other two players higher based on their overall consistency (and took into account the JJ injury. If he was healthy he would have been the best back in the BE). Jerome got off to a slow start.
@ LArry JPP played 1 year in high school & went to 2 JUCO's tho
I love big east football, but will it be on tv at all next year?
Yes, there is is still the current contract!
Rutgers fan here who's not ready to throw in the towel on Coach Flood (seriously, guys...1st year). Anyway, Andrea, you mentioned the combine is huge this year with regard to number of players. How many players are usually invited?
Well there is one of you, Bobby ... yes a record number of invites went out for the combine. Last year I think it was 328 or something (just did a quick search for you).
Adelson was a 4 star after a year of prep school..... we know how that turned out.
Hey now ...
These UC fans are just sour cause they couldn't make it to a different league. Have fun the C-USA part 2!
We are sinking fast, guys.
I believe you hate UC. show UC some love AA
You know my dirty little secret. I hate (fill in your school here).
Flood started out 9-0. Jeez!
What, no realignment question today?!?! Come on people!
There have been some, I just am not pushing them through. THERE IS NOTHING LEFT TO SAY!
Do you believe, given who returns and who is not back in 2013, that TEDDY HEISMAN! will be on that dais in NYC in December?
I believe he will be invited to NYC, yes.
This is just a heads up AA but if and when PJ walker wins the starting QB Job at temple he will remind you all of BJ Daniels. Same stature and open field ability and arm strength. You will all be in for a treat in temple, he has program changing ability. You've seen graham and Greene and next up is their cousin
Wait, B.J. Daniels? Not sure what folks around here think about Mr. Daniels (one of my favorites to interview!)
AA Rules!!!! Q: do you know anything about our potential future OC (K State guy)?
I honestly don't know much about him except he wasn't very good as a head coach. I think he was OC at UVa for some time. I figure he has to have a pro-style mind-set to even get an interview there.
Hey Louisville Fans the ACC is the 5th best power conference in football which is barely a upgrade from the BE
I do not want to see Flood fired either. This isn't a one and done thing (like college basketball). Rome wan't built in a day and Flood needs a resepctable amount of time to take RU further than Coach Schiano. I can remember the days of Dick Anderson andTerry Shea and Flood is doing fine. He also was BE co-Coach of the Year!
Here we go again with my computer! BAH HUMBUG!
At least I only hit "submit answer" five times instead of 500 times.
Will you marry me?
My husband would have a problem with that.
why is everyone so high on Louisville (the mighty AA included) when they barely won most of theirs games last year, including 0-12 usm and lost to uconn...yes they beat florida, but ULL almost did the same, florida was overrated to begin with
That win over Florida was bigger than any win any other BE team had all year. And they return everybody, including Mr. Bridgewater. Easy to see why.
That was NOT me! I would never ask you that... in public. LOL Seriously, that was not me.
So two weeks?
Chris from Bama... name 3 teams with the recent success of FSU, Clemson, and VT that are in the remaining BE. It's a step up, at least in terms of quality at the top in the ACC.
Why do you keep defending Flood?! Did you see our offense this year? The play calling? The blind allegiance to Nova?
Yes, he made mistakes. But he also won 9 games in his first year ever as a head coach! I mean you guys act as if Schiano won all his big games. He didn't!
Can RU beat Arkansas again in 2013?
Who is the QB for Rutgers?
Brian, it's his FIRST year. 9-0 start. Problems at the end? Sure. But it's his FIRST year. Give the guy a little time before freaking out. Or check out Bigg Edd's message
Thanks for the chat as always AA, see you next week!
Last time I checked, Flood didn't call plays on offense.
But Schiano didn't have BE championship talent in his early years.
He did with Ray Rice and in 2011. And he blew the big games. Losing to UConn a few years ago?! C'mon, man.
All right you guys, it's been real, it's been fun, but now it's time for me to scram. I got Matt Rhule calling me shortly. Have a great weekend and see you all next time!
