Let's get this chat going!
Just how bad was that loss the other night to the Wizards?
Their pick-and-roll and transition defense needs to become more consistent. Opposing point guards are going right after Raymond Felton, who's not a great defender and has recently returned to the court. It's on the other team's scouting report to do that, no question. Eventually, the Knicks likely want Iman Shumpert to have that matchup, but they're not pushing his legs right now. Remember, it was a lower-body injury. Avery Bradley, on the other hand, who's a defensive specialist for the Celtics, suffered a shoulder injury.
Why does Coach Woodson always say it's his fault when it comes to losses?
In my opinion, because he's the head coach and representing the team. He's never been one to call out his guys in public. He'll say things like, "I need to help them more," but he'll never berate them in front of the media.
James White in the dunk contest?
Yes sir! http://espn.go.com/blog/new-york/knicks/post/_/id/35570/white-novak-in-all-star-competitions
i would like to see the knicks try to trade novak at the deadline. your thoughts??
No. Why give up arguably the best 3-point shooter in the game? When he's on the court, even when he's not scoring, he's putting so much pressure on the defense because of his threat to shoot -- and, therefore, he's helping to open up lanes for his teammates. His presence counts. Obviously, his defense still needs work, but he's made some strides this season.
Which New York Knicks Players are Playing in the 2013 NBA All-Star Game? Where is the All-Star Game is Held at?
Melo and Chandler. Houston at the Toyota Center.
How can the Knicks improve at the guard position. Seems they are one player from being a serious contender to win it all.
That's not their biggest issue; Shumpert will come along. It's their frontcourt. What's going to happen with Wallace and Camby? We'll just have to wait and see. Overall, it doesn't appear any moves will be made before the trade deadline.
Have you spoken to Shumpert? He doesn't seem his self recently, is he having trouble adjusting?
It's interesting you bring this up. At least with the media, he's changed somewhat. He's more abrupt, anxious to leave, not the usual friendly guy. He might be frustrated just coming back from injury and not doing that much yet to help his team. He has a bright future, though. And he still has those big-smile moments.
Jared - big fan of your chats. The five who Woodson chooses to finish games recently (Felton, Smith, Anthony, Stoudemire, Chandler) do not seem to be very effective in terms of ball movement - very iso-heavy or one-on-one playing. Wouldn't having Kidd on the floor help? He really knows to throw the right pass in crunch time.
I think Kidd needs to be in there, but Woodson has been looking to reduce his minutes recently before the All-Star break. He spoke recently about Kidd being a little worn down from all the minutes he was playing in Felton's absence. Regarding the iso, I agree it has been sometimes too much. But Woodson has been going to Melo to lead the pick-and-roll late in the games. That's similar to how Kevin Durant finishes games sometimes. I also think Woodson is a very underrated coach when it comes to out-of-bounds plays. He's shown some creativity in those sets late in games, and it helps to have Amar'e down the stretch. They can go to him in the post or he can be a finisher down low, like Tyson off the lobs.
It looks like Durant is the odds-on favorite for MVP. Does Carmelo have any shot at this point?
Absolutely. It's still only early February. The Knicks are one of the top teams in the East, and Melo has been shooting the ball extremely well and he's developing as a defender and facilitator. Why not?
Jared! my brotha from another motha! That knicks loss to Washington showed me that they still have not adopted that championship mentality fully...right?
I don't think you can look at that one game and sum it all up like that. But as I mentioned earlier in the chat, the loss exposed their continuous pick-and-roll and transition defensive issues. While they've been winning most of their games lately, they've been playing a lot of come-from-behind basketball. They gotta bring it defensively right from the start and for longer stretches during games. Scoring will really never be a problem for this team, which Woodson brings up as well.
Old man Kidd really seems to be struggling lately. What do you think about putting him on the shelf until a couple weeks before the playoffs?
As I said earlier in the chat, Woodson has been reducing his minutes purposely before the All-Star break.
Can the knicks please sign K-mart now that Rasheed isn't coming back?...Woodson and the knicks love lying about injuries..
No serious talks right now. That's not close to happening.
Are people realizing i have a vendetta against the knicks? I cant help but mention the Nets being better when someone asks me about the knicks even though the question has nothing to do with the Nets.
The Nets are better overall defensively at this point. But the Knicks' depth is developing on both ends -- obviously with Shumpert and Stoudemire back -- and it's making them a scarier opponent, especially with their ball movement and 3-point shooting. I can tell you what, though, if these two teams meet in the first round, it would be very competitive.
Unless the Knicks health just goes into the toilet, I see no reason that they don't end up the 1 or 2 seed. I just feel like they match up well against the Heat. Your thoughts?
First of all, the Knicks need to tighten up their pick-and-roll defense. If the Knicks and Heat were to match up right now, I could see LeBron James and Dwyane Wade having field days. I also think the Knicks need a deeper frontcourt defensively with James and Wade constantly attacking the paint. I think Camby and Wallace are two important "pieces to the puzzle," as Woodson always says. The Knicks would make it competitive, but they would need to game plan beyond Melo in isolation and 3-point shooting. The Heat's defense and rotations are just too good.
The defensive issues: Lack of effort or skill? Poor matchups? You mentioned previously that Felton isn't a great defender. However, it seems he's declined with the rest of the team. I feel like the team is playing worse "D" as a whole.
I think part of it is that their energy was down in Washington. But I also think Felton and Shumpert are not where they should be right now defensively. With Felton, I'm not sure if he'll ever be where he needs to be defensively. He has a difficult time staying in front of opposing point guards -- he needs more help than others in the league -- and that puts a lot of strain on the Knicks' defense.
It also seems to me that their defensive intensity goes down when the 3's aren't falling. Maybe not enough blood in water to get sharks going. Any views on that?
It's an interesting observation. I think the bigger issue is that with all the shooting comes longer rebounds, and other teams are sometimes snatching those up and getting a big step on the Knicks to push the ball and convert on breakaways. The Knicks are not great defensively in transition. They're also not a standout rebounding team, which is another reason why Camby and Wallace's return will help.
I personally do not care if the knicks end up in one seed or two seed i just don't want to face the celtics in first round, too dangerous. Thoughts?
I still think so. Whenever you think the Celtics are going to go away, they come back. Just recently, they lose Rondo, but still build a winning streak. They're not going to fold and they know how to rattle teams with their physical play. The Knicks have shown this season that they're not necessarily ready for that. It would be a great matchup.
I've noticed Brewer and Copeland have been in the dog house recently, any chance we let go Cope and pick up a much needed big man, I've heard Henry Sims name thrown around.
Woodson wants guys on the floor who can play defense and score. While Brewer can defend, he hasn't been scoring. And while Copeland can shoot and score, his defense is a big weakness. As for Sims, yes, he's been blowing up in the D-League. But it appears that Woodson is committed to Wallace and a call-up/trade/signing may not happen.
Will the Blizzard in New York City Today affect the New York Knicks or the Brooklyn Nets?
I'm not sure about the Nets. The Knicks are in Minnesota tonight, so the question is: how will it affect their travel, as as well as the Clippers', tomorrow?
Jared-T'Wolves just cut Lou Amundson. Any chance the Knicks cut Brewer (or anyone else) and give him a look?
I like Amundson, but it appears that Woodson is sticking by Wallace. I don't expect a move.
What are the chances the Knicks bring in Henry Sims? He can be a big asset to them as a big, he is dominating in the D-League.
At this point, talking to Sims' agent the other day, nothing is imminent.
What happened to Ronnie Brewer? He was a good addition to the team the first month, but as of late his minutes have dropped dramatically. Don't you think it would make since to start Brewer at the 3 and have Kidd come off the bench to save his legs?
Brewer's 3-point shooting started to really dip, and that's been a big part of the Knicks' offense. Woodson places his role players in the baseline corners for shots. In fact, Shumpert said that's been a big adjustment for him this season. Shump is not really a guard attacking from the wings as much; he's now in the corner awaiting the pass for the 3, or attacking from the baseline.
Jared.. when do you think the league will start to think of the knicks as a serious threat? It's always Miami, OKC and then everyone else. I know they're the two champions of their leagues respectively, but whats it gonna take? Making it to the ECF?
The Knicks are not consistent defensively at this point. But people around the league -- from coaches to the media -- talk a lot about their offense and how scary it is. They just need to put it all together. They have what it takes. Most importantly, they need to stay healthy. I would say as far as expectations at this point, based on what they've done so far, anything less than the ECF would be a disappointment.
i know Mike Woodson is in his "Wait and see" mode with Rasheed Wallace but when is it time to say we tried and we need to move on. Don't get me wrong I love Sheed but winning is more important than loyalty. Am I wrong with this sheed situation?
Woodson sounds adamant that Wallace will be back after the All-Star break. But, again, new information on injuries is always tough to digest. You don't really know. I've heard from people close to the Knicks that his health is not a sure thing at all. We'll just have to wait and see on this one.
Are there any teams interested in any of our players? also, would you trade felton right now for rondo even if he's hurt?
No lol ...
Dont expect the knicks to make any moves before the deadline but looking prematurely into the off-season I personally would love to flip Novak for Korver or Redick, guys who can shoot the 3 and still get other looks and aren't totally inept at the defensive end, am I crazy for believing this could happen? Don't know how eager their respective teams are in retaining them nor what their value in free agency will be but we do the full mle available next yr
Yes, I definitely like Redick and Korver more for their versatility, as you mentioned. The key is how Novak and the team uses him during the playoffs against the top teams. Last postseason, Novak was nonexistent.
Amare has been playing lights out the last few games and I think he can continue and only get better and better as the season progesses. Your thoughts???
He's looking good. When he first returned, he was scoring on the block mostly. Now, he's looking better and better running the court and even making different cuts in the halfcourt to get open for jumpshots. His game appears to be expanding. But, most importantly, he's a finisher down low off Melo, Smith and Felton's attack, among others.
Dajuan Blair is the perfect piece for this time and he is avail. Cope for Blair seems like a pretty fair deal. Who says no?
Another solid pickup, but as I've said in this chat, it appears that Woodson is sticking by Wallace for the time being. From all indications, I don't see the Knicks making a move. But with injuries and the Knicks, you just never know to be honest lol ... Remember when Woodson said repeatedly that Lin will "absolutely" be back as a Knick? That's my point.
My foot isn't gonna hold me back from playin', I'm coming back and we gonna win the chip this year! Ball don't lie!!
Alright, let's go!
Hey Jared. Thanks for the chats. You mentioned Coach Woodson wanting to limit Kidd's minutes. What about Anthony? Seems like he has been 40+ every game. Is that really sustainable over a full season?
Ideally, Woodson would like Melo around 35, but I think he feels a sense of urgency to win these games before the All-Star break. He's not going as deep off his bench, but that should change after the break. He needs to be careful, and I think he knows that. He also hasn't been playing Kidd as much, and Melo, Felton and others have seen additional minutes to maintain some of the scoring.
I love the current starting lineup (Felton, Kidd, Shump, Melo and Tyson), but how concerned do you think Woodson is about the slow starts the Knicks continuously put themselves in? I love Amare and JR (the best 1-2 punch coming off the bench) and the spark they provide off the bench, but should Woodson entertain starting one of them to help with the slow starts and if so, which one?
I like the initial starting lineup -- because it features the best starting point guard the team has, the do-everything Jason Kidd, the defensive specialist Shumpert, and obviously Melo and Chandler -- but they're not playing to their potential. They come out pacing too much and not showing much resolve with their pick-and-roll defense. I think they're still getting adjusted to one another as well. It's only been a few weeks.
I like now they keep melo on one side of the block posting and amare on the other side doing the same thing...why didn't people think this could work with the right coaching?? Also is Dantoni done in LA after this season?
Stoudemire's low posting has been key. A new development for him.
Jared, seriously, the knicks need to get younger and more explosive in the frontcourt....any trades brewing at all?
No trades brewing from what I hear, but I do agree about the frontcourt. I just don't know if that's something they'll address this season or next. Woodson appears to be committed to his older, veteran bunch this go-around.
