Happy Friday everyone. Starting to snow rather heavily in Connecticut. Right now it's diagonal snowfall. Soon, it will be horizontal. I've got plenty of microbrew and MMA. So let's get rolling. All kinds of things happening right now. What's on your minds?
Do u think Rashad still goes to middle and maybe challenge rockhold for a #1 contender bout
Not sure what the next move for Rashad will be. That last fight was pretty listless, and then for the boss to question your hungry doesn't help. Maybe a change of scenery at 185 would do him wonders, but that weight cut may sap the rest of his willingness.
If you're Joe Silva, do you wait until after UFC 158 to give Anderson a match-up? That way, if Hendricks wins you give Silva Weidman, and if Hendricks loses you give him GSP (assuming GSP beats Diaz).
Good question, Sandy. Not sure if Anderson is willing to wait that long. He might be, if he's truly against fighting Weidman. But there is still so many conditions to that scenario. One is that Hendricks loses, and the other is that GSP would be willing to fight Silva. That remains a big "if." My guess is Silva/Weidman is getting made.
Why aren't people making more of Overeem's build without PEDs? He look way, way softer.
Behind the scenes in Vegas plenty of people were talking about it. Heard many people say he looked smaller/softer. I thought he looked a little different, but still a mammoth. Man, it was weird watching him get cut down in the third, though. The place was electric.
Where do you see the winner of Te Huna/Jimmo at LHW? Do you think the fight has any implications in terms of top 10 status?
That should be a really good stand-up battle. Jimmo got that quick KO over Perosh, and Te-Huna has been winning by KO for the the last couple of years. I think the winner definitely takes a step up towards that periphery, but not quite in the top ten. Jimmo, as the MFC champ, has some nice notches though (Gouveia, Eastman, Sokoudjou). He'd be closing in.
Is Uriah the next big star to come out of TUF? It has been quite a long talentless drought for the show.
That KO he scored on the last episode doesn't hurt. Guy has tremendous kicks. Wondering how he handles strong wrestler, though. Nice to see some intrigue coming up through those ranks though, right? This season's been fun. I like him as a person, too. Humble guy.
(and he fought Weidman and Philippou before landing the TUF gig, so he's stood across from monsters).
Who challenges Velasquez next?
Million dollar question, JD. It boils down to either the trifecta with JDS, or a rematch with Bigfoot. Not sure which makes more sense, but leaning a little towards Bigfoot (let JDS/Overeem settle those differences).
Something Different. Favorite video game of all time?
Still old-school, Mark. Missile Command. God I was good at that. Frogger was also awesome, though it cheated (IT CHEATED).
Overeem v Dos santos who u got if the fights made
I'd go JDS. But man, I don't know...since UFC 155, my heavyweight settings have been changed and changed again.
Chucky Poo, you like how Reem go boom? Where does the HW division go from here?
It did go boom. Can't be what the UFC wanted; that was a big money fight between Reem/Velasquez. I know...how about your and Brock in Russia, winner gets a title show?
IF Mir wins does he get another shot at gold?
I hope not, but then again, beating Cormier would jump some stock with a quickness.
Hey bro. Looks like a potential fight of the year candidate between Cub Swanson and Dustin Poirier. Future title shot for the winner?
Love this fight. I like it better than the original of Siver/Poirier. I think the winner is definitely right up there near a title shot. Problem is, we've got a bottleneck situation happening, that'll last through 2013. With Pettis coming down to fight Aldo, that means Korean Zombie/Lamas and these guys are all in a holding pattern. Doesn't help that the Aldo/Pettis fight is in August.
Correcting Tyler: Just one year ago, TUF brought us #1 FW contender John Dodson (and in my eyes the winner over D Johnson)
Good point, Nick. How soon we sleep on Dodson.
I did not see that Bigfoot knockout coming! Where does this put him in the division though? I think I speak for a lot of us when I say that I don't want to see Cain brutalize him again.
I mean, it puts him right back up there. The best thing Bigfoot and his camp could do (if they want the title shot, which sounds like they aren't overly urgent for) would be to preach that the first contest was an aberration. That second time around, things will be different.
Poirier vs swanson and Barao vs McDonald. Fuel Tv subscribers getting spoiled
Is JDS too one-dimensional (boxing)?
I'd have said "no" more emphatically before his UFC 155 fight. I think he's not one-dimensional though. He wrestles well. That sprawl. He did get caught with that big overhand right, and that sort of dropped all game plan from then on.
Where does Mousasi go if he gets past Gustafsson?
That division is such a muddle. Again, a little bottle-necked because of Sonnen being jumped up to a title shot (and it happening in April). My guess, though, is he'd have to wait even with a win over Gusty. That is, unless Hendo loses to Machida, and Mousasi makes it emphatic....maybe then?
Chuck, what do you think about Evans vs Rua on Fox? They're big enough names that it would draw ratings, and it's a good crossroads fight for both.
Yeah, that's the kind of fight I kind of expect each guy to get. It's funny. Here we are relegating Evans to that old "gatekeeper" circuit (or, past glories circuit), and a week ago we were putting him against Silva. Fight game can change real swiftly....
How far can Maia get in the Welterweight division? Will he eventually get a shot at the title?
Lot of top dudes right now all in that rarefied space. It all comes down to UFC 158. What happens in all those 170-pound fights? I believe the best route would be to stack Maia against the winner of MacDonald/Condit.
Kind of sad that Dos Santos can win 10 fights in a row in the UFC, go 1-1 with the Current Champ, beat 3 former UFC champs in a row (Carwin, Cain, Mir), and in the top heavy - Heavyweight Divsion with no true #1 contender, can't get an immediate rematch. We would rather give it to Bigfoot who was finished by Cain in 3 minutes
I know what you mean. But there's the "what do the fans want" thing going on here, plus a chance to roll out JDS/Reem (which isn't a bad consolation). I wouldn't be surprised if he DOES get Velasquez next, though. Bigfoot isn't exactly banging kitchen pots right now for his chance.
How is Adam Cella? All recovered and ready to fight? Lost in all the talk is how good Cella looked up until the last 10 seconds of the round.
I think he was okay. Didn't you see Steve Mazzagatti reassure everyone? (Ahem). Seriously, though, I haven't heard. It's all canned, so I assume he's fine, or it would have come out that he wasn't.
Lavar Johnson vs. Brendan Schaub looks like a slugfest, who goes down swinging?
Tough one. Going Schaub. He's due. Isn't he? (I have grown used to seeing him get clipped, though).
So what are the odds that Aldo pulls out his match in June or July? Seems like Pettis always has that type of luck.
That thought did occur to me. He does have some strange juju going against him in the 155-pound division. Not sure. If Alvarez is a UFCer by then, maybe he steps in. Gray Maynard would be a very difficult fight for Bendo, I think....maybe they look there?
Hey Chuck! What's your opinion of the "official UFC rankings?" Love it, hate it, indifferent?
Eh, guess sort of indifferent. I have a chance to jump on there, and might. I don't see it as a conflict of interest. I see it as a premise for people (casuals, diehards, in-betweens) to gather around and find bearings. That's about it. It plays out like a gauge of just how ignorant we in the media are, though. Lots of quibbling.
Time to let alexis Davis in the ufc
Don't have to convince me. Thought her fight with Kaufman was right up there for FOTY in 2012.
I'm all for women's MMA in the UFC, but Ronda Rousey is going to smoke Lizz. I like "competitive" more than I like "beasts." Agree????
Reggie, that is my...hesitation, too. I just don't see it being competitive, and therefore, as novel and groundbreaking and historic as it is, I feel it'll be anticlimactic and fast.
What about Rory McDonald vs Silva? If he beats Condit then he's not willing to fight GSP. Plus he a big 170..
You hear Rumble Johnson moving up to HW to fight Arlovski? How did he ever make those 170 cuts?
That is crazy, isn't it? Why he was so insistent on fighting at 170, I don't know.
simple as this....pettis/aldo is a fight that everyone wants. llamas/aldo ain't.
You know, it is pretty much as simple as that. Lamas deserves a shot, but he just won't be the draw that Pettis will. If he beats Korean Zombie? Maybe we're getting somewhere.
How do u see jones and sonnen fight I think its an easy one for jones?
I see it similarly. Sonnen won't have anything for Jones. He wants to take it to the ground, and work his G&P? Best of luck with that against Jones, who doesn't get taken down.
Any word on what happens to Pettis' title shot at 155 with a win or loss against Aldo?
No word on that. I have no idea what the UFC will do, either.
Heard about Josh Barnett supposedly turning down the Octagon. Why do you think this is? Seems like he could've cashed in on a decent pay day as the only marketable contender to Velasquez right now.
I was surprised to hear it, but something in the contract couldn't be worked out, and alas, Barnett will be pillaging/plundering a different promotion (and leaving a trail of carcasses and scorched earth). Would have liked him and Cain....
Deeper division in the UFC today: Featherweight or Welterweight?
I'd still go welterweight, but ask me again after UFC 158.
What type of serious prospect do you see Henry Cejudo as? Seems everyone os super Gogh on him, yet it wouldn't surprise me to see him burnout/flake out. Give me Bubba Jenkins as the better "prospect"
I think he could make a pretty huge splash in MMA. Charisma, mystique, and he's a 125-er, so maybe he adds value to that division. Agree on Jenkins, though. Some great prospects coming up, either way.
I thought Aldo won and fought a bad gameplan. Where did the leg kicks go after the second round?
He said he noticed Edgar checking them. That's true, but it was a little strange that they went away so completely for a while there.
Is Kim Winslow the worst ref in the business? If not, then who is?
I think Dana would through Mazaggatti's name in there. Winslow has had some bad moments. That stand-up at the last card was ridiculous though. Glad it didn't end up hurting Bobby Green.
Thanks for the chat. You think part of rashad's issue(s) the other night could be attributed to (1) missing out on the Jackson/winklejohn strategy and (2) eating too many Jon Jones elbows? Couldn't tell why he wouldn't pull the trigger the other night.
Somebody was saying he hurt his hand early, and that was the reason. I'd buy it more wholesale if we hadn't seen him tentative in the past. Nog did a good job of keeping Rashad at bay with the jab, but there was something out of whack there. From where I was sitting, Roy Nelson, in the stands, was begging him to shoot for a double leg. Rashad even looked over during a break, and acknowledged him. But then...did nothing.
Thanks for the mention Chuck, glad to see my work has been noticed, though I doubt Thiago Tavares and Jackson last night on the Bellator show appreciate it.
Poor Dan. You always get yourself transfixed, like you're being lured in by a chicken tetrazzini.
Why isn't Roy Nelson's name in the HWT title mix? With Werdum locked up and Carwin injured, its thin for the big boys
Not sure he's at that level. But if necessity dictates, maybe he is considered?
With all the promotion for the 157 Card, I haven't seen anything promoting Faber. Seems strange - isn't he one of the more marketable guys in the lower weight classes?
I think they are selling Ronda Rousey, and that comes at the expense of everybody else. Even Liz Carmouche.
What would you rather see? Tito vs. Liddell in a UFC match or Tito vs. Dana White in a boxing match? I have read a lot about Dana White's boxing, and I would love to see him get out there and give it a try.
White would be the first to tell you he's not getting in there. So I guess I'd go with Tito/Chuck (reluctantly). No mention of Couture in there against White?
IMHO, TRT & TUE are LOL dumb.
Well said, Ike. Well said. (What's IKE an acronym for?)
Hey Chuck, have you heard any explanation for why Pettis-Aldo is going down in August? From a fan perspective, that's my biggest problem with this fight considering neither Aldo or Pettis took much damage.
I have not heard any direct reason. Even Pettis was confused by it. Maybe Aldo suffered an injury, or perhaps, with Harley Davidson's anniversary coming up (and them being such a big sponsor), they are trying to arrange something up in the Chicago/Milwaukee area to correlate?
Cub Swanson and Dustin Poirier going to bring it big time to the UK!!!
Amen, brother Jay.
Hey Chuck, Jacare looks like he could be a decent challenger for the belt at 185, how far off a shot is he?/who does he fight next?
Heard somebody say he should fight Costa Philippou. To me that would make some sense. I think Jacare is a couple of fights from the title, but he is a big dark horse to make waves in that division.
Any word when we will see Miesha Tate, Julie Kedzie or Sara McMann in the UFC or any other women? They are what made Strikeforce exciting for the last year.
Good chance they are waiting to see how things play out at UFC 157, but been told that all are being considered. Seems inevitable.
How is Frankie still in the P4P discussion when he lost 3 in a row?!
I think because he was in the "literal" P4P discussion for so long. He was fighting guys bigger than him, so was a literal 155er. I also think the close nature of his losses. But for me, he's out of the top ten with three losses in a row. Love his heard/courage/adaptability, but can't justify that.
What am I hearing about a possible Chael Sonnen injury and the possibility that Alexander G. will be replacing him?
I dunno....what are you hearing?
Saw you on the MMA Beat, Chuck. Love that show. Was wondering what your thoughts were on Josh Barnett passing on coming to the UFC?
Must have his reasons, Gordon. That was actually a topic we had planned to hit on, but didn't have time. Would have liked to see him there, given his history.
Chuck, what's your thoughts on Ricardo Lamas being skipped over for a title shot? Beating Swanson, Hioki and Koch should get you that shot, shouldn't it??
Yes, it should. Particularly when Koch was signed up twice to fight Aldo, and Hioki was offered (but refused). Swanson is on a torrid streak right now, too. But Pettis is the money fight, and the UFC jumped.
Is Anderson Silva going to HAVE TO FIGHT Chris Wiedman now? Seems like he's run out of options.
I would think that's the direction the UFC is thinking, and that persuasion is underway. But in 2013, I've been fooled a lot. No telling what's up their sleeves.
Why does professional wrestlers(wwe) don't do so well in mma.
This will vex mankind for all of time I fear, Nonso Charles.
Hey bro. With Overeem, Suga, Guillard, and Michael Johnson losing recently, are the Blackzilians the most overhyped camp in history? Except for Vitor Belfort and his Ivan Drago training regimen, of course.
Been a bad stretch for the Zilians, that's for sure. Lot of resilient characters there. I know times are hard, but they'll bounce back. Jimmo's fighting next weekend. Maybe he'll be the unlikely one to change the course.
Is Dominic Cruz's injury showing how weak the Bantamweight division truly is?
Not sure why they waited so long to book McDonald/Barao. McDonald was good to go like in October of 2012. But glad it's happening. Not the deepest division.
What are the chances that Dana pulls Werdum out of the TUF Brazil finale to take on Cain? Seems he is the only reasonable heavyweight you can match him against the champ.
I don't think he'd mess with that TUF match-up. Too much time and money goes into promotion. Besides, even though Werdum is "up there," are people clamoring to see that fight? That would be the big reason the UFC wouldn't snatch up Werdum for Velasquez.
is it snowing really bad there?
Coming down. Looks like it's going to be a long night. Right now I'm in a snow globe.
The Aldo/Edgar fight was tremendous. I think it showcased the best of both fighters. What were your thoughts on the quality of it?
Loved it. Thought we got a little bit of everything. It went back and forth. Aldo had his moments. Edgar challenged late, and made Aldo earn it. Just what I was hoping for, honestly.
Hendricks better focus on Ellenberger and not GSP.
Seen too many guys slip in that penultimate spot before.
If the upset does happen and Rousey loses, how fast will the women's division fold in the UFC?
What a calamity that would be. All this promotion on Rousey, and then she gets beat on the big stage. Not sure what would happen. But for all the work Rousey did to build up women's MMA, Carmouche could be the one to smash it. That's a lot of pressure on Rousey (and a burden that Carmouche had just assume not contemplate).
Dominic Cruz updates?
Seems to be recovered after the second ACL procedure. Haven't heard a timetable, but will check in with his camp.
when Condit beats macdonald again does he get another title shot and when?
Doubt it. He would likely get somebody like Maia, with a title shot in the balance. That'd be my guess. Just no way they roll back GSP/Condit again. However, if Diaz is the champion? That might change some thinking.
Hi Chuck. Is Mauro Renallo done with Zuffa?
I know he moved to California, and is doing work in boxing. Not sure of his whole story.
Hey Chaz. Why don't hockey players do so well in the ufc? They fight good on the ice... Also if Chael IS out and they throw my boy Gustaffson to Jonny Jones I might pout and stomp around my house for a while. Too soon for the swede.
Where are you guys hearing that Chael might be out? I haven't heard that (but then again, I am in here typing...can't cruise the internet).
How seriously is Maynard considering the drop to FW? With Edgar gone, he's got to be fairly close to a title shot with a couple wins.
I don't think he's serious. What would be the point? And I am not sure he could even make that. He's a HUGE lightweight. That would be a ridiculous cut. Though he is A) a wrestler and knows how to do it and B) his wife is a tremendous cook, who uses natural ingredients (usually vegetarian), so diet wouldn't be a problem.
How long until rashad is on trt. Dude looked old.
Hopefully never, but the way things are going, the "exemption" starts to become the people who are stubbornly natural. They become "exempt" from the exploitable loopholes.
Did you catch UFC Primetime last night?
If Condit beats MaCdonald again does he get another shot a GSP? and when. or do you see him taking on safferdine after macdonald fight?
As mentioned before, I think whoever wins MacDonald/Condit will get Maia. Just a hunch. Don't foresee Condit getting a title shot so quick, and MacDonald is reluctant to fight GSP. Not sure where Saffeidine lands in the scope of things, but here's guessing UFC 158 sorts it all out.
How about Shlemenko knocking out Falcao with those two bombs after it looked like he had asked to call it quits due to the body shots? Brutal and yet awesome.
Loved the post-fight stuff. Great to see it all transcribed.
Hey man, one last question, if you had to pick one, which champion loses his belt this year? I'm leaning towards either Mighty Mouse or GSP.
Yeah, that's tough. I'd go with Ben Henderson. If not Melendez, maybe Maynard or Pettis. Tough row of challenges coming his way.
OK, guys, I need to get out of here and go get provisions before the blizzard seals me in. Thanks for stopping by. Hit my Twitter @ChuckMindenhall, and we'll see you in here next week.
