Chat with Myron Medcalf

Myron Medcalf
  (2:02 PM)

Thanks for joining me. Here we go again.

Tyler Morrison (Minneapolis, MN)

What do you think is the reason for the Gophers current troubles?

Kyle (Iowa)

How come everyone's criticizing Duke for only beating Boston College by one at BC? Yet Miami only beat BC by one at home.

Myron Medcalf
  (2:05 PM)

For Tyler: Gophers have a lot of issues. But in general... a so-so D, so-so offense, turnovers and poor free throw shooting.

Myron Medcalf
  (2:06 PM)

For Kyle: I think the criticism comes from the fact that Duke's struggles were so surprising. Who expected Blue Devils to just squeeze by BC? Not me.

Myron Medcalf

Myron Medcalf
  (2:07 PM)

Some technical difficulties on this end, folks .. Sorry for delayed responses.

Kyle (Kansas)

Simple question. Who ya got, KU or ksu? ROCK CHALK BABY!

Myron Medcalf
  (2:10 PM)

I like Kansas. Although I should probably pick K-State. The Wildcats are playing great D. They're confident. Rodney McGruder is a star. ... All the things you can't say about the Jayhawks right now. But I can't fathom a fourth consecutive loss for Bill Self's team. Somehow, they'll figure it out.

Brian (Billings, MT)

I'm not saying there's a great chance of this, but is this season the best shot of a #16 beating a #1 since maybe 2008?

Mark (Memphis)

Very few believers, i know, but the Memphis Tigers are growing up fast. Watch out

Myron Medcalf
  (2:12 PM)

Yes. I'm not saying it will happen, either. But based on what we've seen thus far ... you can't say it's impossible. I mean, we had a pair of 15-2 upsets last year. And this season is much wackier.

Brandon (Indiana)

Did the AP get it right??

Myron Medcalf
  (2:13 PM)

I honestly don't think you can get it "right" this week. So many arguments and they're all valid. I think Miami is No. 1. But I understand the opposing arguments.

John (Ft Wayne)

If Michigan State were to beat Michigan at home tomorrow, would they have to be considered the team to beat in the league? (Would be 2 up on Michigan)

Myron Medcalf
  (2:15 PM)

Yep. But not by much. ... Michigan State's Big Ten schedule gets much tougher in the coming weeks. Let's see how Spartans handle it. If they get through this stretch without a blemish (or one), Spartans could end up as the team to beat nationally, not just in the BT.

Brian (Syracuse)

Is it to early to get excited about the 'Cuse's chances in March(with Southerland back)?

Myron Medcalf
  (2:16 PM)

Not too early. He's a stretch forward with range. He makes the game easier on everyone. Cuse is more fluid with him on the floor. They're deeper. They were giving Southerland's minutes to a talented freshman. Less pressure on Grant now. Cuse could be dangerous in March, for sure.

Don (Spokane)

Where would you rank Gonzaga, and should they consider changing to a new conference?

Myron Medcalf
  (2:17 PM)

Where would they go? I have them at No. 7. Not sure how Zags move up much when the WCC doesn't offer much competition.

Ryan (Chicago, IL)

Who eventually wins the MWC? How far can the Lobos go in the tourney?

Myron Medcalf
  (2:19 PM)

I'm going with Colorado State. They'll finish the year strong. ... Lobos? Depends on which team shows up in March. This weekend's version wouldn't have escaped the first round.

Nick (Boston)

Hi Myron, As a Harvard Fan, why isn't Tommy Amaker getting some mention at least for coach of the year his 2 best players got kicked off the team and they have played a hard schedule and yet they are tied for first in the ivy league.

Myron Medcalf
  (2:19 PM)

Good point. Probably deserves more buzz. And where's the love for freshman Siyani Chambers? Top-5 point guard in that class.

Adam (Chicago)

So, I have watched a lot of college basketball. I have seen all the top teams play a bunch. To me, Indiana definitely looks like the favorite to win it all. Sometimes, they just look unstoppable, and when they are not playing well, they still look pretty good. In a tournament of 68 where guard play (yogi & oladipo) and a center (zeller) is so important, do you see anyone being the favorite over Indiana come March Madness time?

Myron Medcalf
  (2:21 PM)

No. I tweeted this earlier. ... If every team in the field comes to play during the Big Dance, I'd probably pick Indiana to win it all. But those stretches of confusion (Champaign ... the second half against Minnesota in Bloomington) ... You have to wonder why/how this team takes its foot off the gas. That'll cost them in the Big Dance. But Tom Crean's program can win the whole thing.

Scott (Indiana)

Is the MVC trending towards getting only 2 teams in the NCAA now, with CU and WSU losing lately? If Indiana State continues to win they should be in right?

Myron Medcalf
  (2:23 PM)

That league is in trouble. I think it's still a multiple bid league. Maybe. Could end up as a one bid league if Indiana State, Creighton and Wichita State continue to take bad losses. I don't know if any team on that list is safe right now. That Illinois State loss really hurt Creighton's resume.

Tommy (Columbia)

Can we get the auto update turned on?

Myron Medcalf
  (2:23 PM)

It's on

John David (Trinity)

Does Kentucky have a legitimate shot tomorrow at Florida? What needs to go right in order for them to pull off the upset?

Myron Medcalf
  (2:26 PM)

Kentucky has to do more than guard the perimeter. The Wildcats must take those 3-point shots away from the Gators. Force them inside, where Nerlens Noel blocks and alters shots as well as any player in America. Kentucky has to turn this into an "inside the arc" game. That's how they win. Offensively, transition ball. You have to force TOs, run and push the pace against a Gators team that is not as fast as it looks sometimes on TV (292 in adjusted tempo per Ken Pomeroy).

Jonathan (NC)

This season of College Hoops seems to be in shambles with no clear cut leader like last year. In your opinion, give me 3 unranked teams who stand a chance at making the tourny and making a run towards greatness??

Myron Medcalf
  (2:27 PM)

I don't know about greatness. But Belmont, Middle Tennessee and St. Louis could make noise in March.

James (Chicago)

Mich of MSU, I've heard the Breslin Center is tough, never been though

Myron Medcalf
  (2:29 PM)

It's a very loud venue. The band is louder than any band I've ever heard. Fans are brutal when they want to be. They honestly don't care. Your girlfriend, your mom ... No one is safe in their eyes. And there's a special buzz in that place when the Spartans are playing well.

Dan (Bloomington)

Looks like Michigan and Indiana will get number one seeds in March barring any major slipups, any chance a third Big Ten team takes another one? Michigan State has a pretty great resume and plays very well, no bad losses (aside from UConn for their first game, who was ranked at that point)

Myron Medcalf
  (2:30 PM)

I guess I'm not sold on two No. 1s in the Big Ten. So many teams at the top are right there. Michigan-Indiana-MSU could all ruin one another's chances of that extra No. 1 slot.

Tyler (Laramie, WYO)

Did you watch the 5OT game on Saturday? As a Louisville fan, I was ready to crawl under a rock... Can't figure my Cards out...

Myron Medcalf
  (2:31 PM)

It was the most fabulous, confusing, thrilling, exciting, surprising mess I've ever seen. ... The Cards made a lot of mistakes. How do you prepare for a five-overtime game, though?

Jpizzle (St. Louis)

How can Missouri be so dominant at home.. and lose all these games to mediocre teams on the road? Ole Miss beat them pretty good @ Ole Miss, the Missouri lays the wood 98pts on them at Mizzou arena.. i just don't understand it.

Myron Medcalf
  (2:32 PM)

That's Missouri's story. That's the issue. A different team on the road. More mistakes once they leave campus. The Tigers must address that or they'll end up exiting the Big Dance early.

Drew (Denver)

Who has a better night? McGrudder or McLemore?

Myron Medcalf
  (2:33 PM)

McLemore. But both will show up.

Steve (Minneapolis)

If you had to pick 2 mid majors to go far in the NCAA tourney who would it be? VCU, Creighton, WSU, Gonzaga or someone else?

Myron Medcalf
  (2:34 PM)

Gonzaga and Belmont. VCU is not a midmajor anymore.

Myron Medcalf
  (2:34 PM)

Gonzaga and Belmont. VCU is not a midmajor anymore.

Spider (South Beach)

If before the season you would have told me Kelly Olynyk was a first round draft pick, I would have laughed at you. Is he a first round draft pick?

Myron Medcalf
  (2:36 PM)

I guess I can't assess that. But he's 7 feet. He can shoot. He has an underrated post game. ... Um, he's 7 feet. He can shoot. He has an underrated post game. You listening to that Timberwolves/Lakers/Bucks/Jay-Z? ... If he was doing this in some Euro junior league, there'd be a bigger buzz about his NBA stock, I think.

hickle (jillys)

How far can Pitt go??

Myron Medcalf
  (2:38 PM)

I think Pitt has a complete team. The Panthers are deep. They play great D. And they fight for a full 40 minutes. Just ask Cincy. That alone should be good for a Sweet 16 run. If Steven Adams' maintain this offensive progression? Maybe even further. History, however, counters that take.

Alex (OH)

I am so frustrated watching Cincinnati play. If they could score 60 a game they would be winning the Big East. What is going on?

Myron Medcalf
  (2:39 PM)

They can't score. Consistently. Too many droughts. Great defensive unit. 81st nationally in adjusted offensive efficiency per Ken Pomeroy. That's the problem.

Dave (Milwaukee)

How good do you believe St Marys is? The resume does not have a ton of meat but the eye test tells me they are one of the top 25 or so taems in the country lately.

Austin (Lawrence, Kansas)

I've seen numbers from 4 to 7. How many from the Big 12 go dancing?

Myron Medcalf
  (2:40 PM)

Ask me that on Thursday night.

Myron Medcalf
  (2:40 PM)

Ask me that on Thursday night.

Myron Medcalf
  (2:41 PM)

I'll say 5 Big 12 teams go dancing. Oklahoma State, Oklahoma, Kansas, K-State and Iowa State.

Edward (Chicago)

How many more wins do the Illini need to secure a tourney bid?

Myron Medcalf
  (2:44 PM)

Good luck with that one, Selection Committee. Quality wins over Gonzaga, Butler, Indiana, Ohio State and Minnesota. .. Top 30 RPI. 9-9 in the Big Ten? How could you keep them out? 8-10? Still have to send them, I think. They're confusing. But they have a resume that no team that's three games under .500 in league play can match.

Jay (New York, NY)

Just read the power rankings... please explain how you have michigan ranked higher than IU

Myron Medcalf
  (2:51 PM)

Finally. This question. Figured the entire chat would be about this. First, I don't think there's much (any?) separation among the top 4. I mixed and matched those squads last night about 10 times. I never felt comfortable, either. Arguments for all four. ... Here's my philosophy on each. ... 1. Miami (Beast. I think Canes are most dominant team in the country right now. Best in America today, IMO). 2. Michigan (Beat Ohio State ... lost to a Wisconsin team that's now ranked after Ben Brust's impossible shot) 3. Duke ... Didn't lose. That's worth something, I guess. But I wasn't impressed by BC effort. 4. Indiana ... I couldn't get over loss to a 2-7 Big Ten team. Hoosiers took their foot off the gas. That's on them. And I couldn't rank Illinois. Even after what they did last week. Someone had to be fourth. What happened in Chamapaign settled it for me, even though Hoosiers looked great in Columbus.

Skylar (Maryland)

Is Kansas' season shot if they drop the game against K- State tonight?

Myron Medcalf
  (2:51 PM)

Nope. Plenty of time left.

Caleb (Seattle)

So how can you really have Gonzaga at 7 when they have no bad loses, beat Big 12 teams that will be dancing and every team you have ahead of them have bad loses?

Myron Medcalf
  (2:53 PM)

Again, Gonzaga's challenge is that it doesn't have the week-to-week opposition that those other teams face in their conference slates. Zags are a byproduct of their limited challenges within the WCC.

chris (indy)

could you see both Cody Zeller and Vic Oladipo being 1st team all Americans?

Myron Medcalf
  (2:53 PM)

Yep.

Andrew (Cincinnati, OH)

Russ Smith is clearly a phenomenal player and Louisville wouldn't be where they are without him, but how much blame does he deserve for UL's loss to Notre Dame after having the Cardinals' final shot at the end of almost every OT?

Myron Medcalf
  (2:55 PM)

Russdiculous was obviously a factor. But not all on him. No way. The Cards' made a lot of mistakes. But give Notre Dame credit ... They went nuts out there. Hit amazing shots. Sometimes, you're just hot. And the Fighting Irish kept making ridiculous shots.

Frank Turner (California)

do you agree with brad stevens quote, Saint Louis is "at a level nobody realizes. ... SLU could go to the Final Four and it wouldn't surprise me one bit."?

Myron Medcalf
  (2:56 PM)

I don't know about all that. But I think the Billikens have the defensive tools to give a lot of teams fits in the postseason. And they're deep. Smart offensively. That's going to be a horrible first or second round matchup for some BCS school.

Derrin (Plano, TX)

How far do you think UNC can go in this year's tournament?

Myron Medcalf
  (2:56 PM)

Tar Heels have to get in first. Seriously.

Dan (Olathe, KS)

How good do you think Nate Wolters would be in, say, the Big East?

Myron Medcalf
  (2:59 PM)

I'm not sure. How good would former Weber State star Damian Lillard be in the NBA? I mean, he didn't play against anyone in college, right? Folks said he'd be a bust. ... And now, he's one of the best young guards in the league. ... Wolters gets buckets. I believe he'd get buckets at any level, honestly. He'd have a more difficult time defensively, though. But no Big East schools wants to see that guy in March.

Jason (Overland Park)

Is Derrin talking about the NIT?

Myron Medcalf
  (2:59 PM)

Maybe.

chip (ny)

who wins tonight - MU or G-town?

Myron Medcalf
  (2:59 PM)

Marquette. But Golden Eagles will make it interesting. They always do.

zac (chicago)

How about Bo Ryan for coach of the year? Lost his point guard before the season. Lost Bruzewitz for a big chunk of the early season. Has turned a 2 guard into a point guard.

Myron Medcalf
  (2:59 PM)

I could see that.

Rob (Newark DE)

Is Laranaga COY? Seems like he's getting little to no Pub for the job he's done with The U.

Myron Medcalf
  (3:00 PM)

Should be the frontrunner at this pace.

chris (indy)

why are you down on the illlni even after a 2-7 start in the B1G, its the toughest conference in America and they have wins over IU, Butler, Gonzaga and Minn. Clearly they hit a ruff patch but aren't they a dangerous team and tough out in the Tourney

Myron Medcalf
  (3:01 PM)

I'm sorry, I'm just not there. I've watched too much bad Illini basketball to suddenly become a believer without any doubts. But last week was a great start for a team that can turn things around in the coming weeks.

Myron Medcalf
  (3:02 PM)

Folks ... It's been real. As always. Thanks for your time. Let's do it again next week. ... Hit me up via email if I missed you (mmedcalf3030@gmail.com). ... Or find me on Twitter (@MedcalfByESPN) ... Thanks again.
