OK, good to be here for a post-signing day/ pre-spring football chat. Lots of things to get to including the new recruiting policy at Texas. Let's get it started
Mr. Strickland, For Mack Brown's sake, what are the expectations, literally speaking, for Texas football next season ? Thank you.
For Mack's sake they better win 10 games and beat OU. If Texas does not beat OU this season will be a failure imo.
What are the chances that Jerrod Heard decommits?
I don't think that happens. I think you see some of the quarterbacks on campus already possibly go elsewhere. But Heard is a polished guy who they really want.
CARTER!! Now that we are switching to the spread (or going back) do you see us running more plays out of the wishbone? I mean if it was good enough for DKR, right?
Nah. Texas has the skill players to run the spread and that is what they need to go with. The shame of it is they recruited to Harsin's structure for two years and really missed out on some guys that could help in the spread.
Do u believe that Texas will finish with a top 3 recruiting class and who will be the best recruit in your opinion Texas will be able to sign? And is Jerrod Heard the real deal?
Heard is the real deal. Not so concerned with where Texas finishes in 2014 class. The '09 and '10 classes were highly rated and turned out to be more bad than good in those classes.
I've seen that TCU is listed as the favorite for the Big-12, in many 2013 projections. Why would this be? Even though they did beat us on Thanksgiving, they dropped 6 of their final 9 games.
ESPN has Texas as the favorite in the way-too-early top 25. I think they are up to 11 now. TCU is around 20. Peterson is a much admired coach though. Better gameday coach than Brown for sure.
Marcus Johnson, Cayleb Jones, Kendall Sanders. Of these 3 which will make the most impact, or will all 3?
Jones is my pick. He impressed me the most. Johnson had his RS year wasted imo. Not sure why Texas did that. sanders had one or two catches. Love his long arms and ability to go get the ball just need to see him more.
Which offensive linemans job is most at Risk, Espinosa? Who do you feel should be on the line come First game?
Dom for sure and then one of the guards. As for the first game, I think it might be the same five that started last year. But if Walters refuses to run every play hard he will be benched. And maybe Trey moves over to center to allow two different guards on there one of which could be James.
What impact could the transfer from Houston have this year(don't have his name on hand)?
Zeke Riser. Well since he is considering TAMU as well I'm not sure if you want to pencil him in at Texas just yet. Plus he would be way down the depth chart at Texas. The Horns are already two deep at DT.
Looking at the D Line right now, im curious to see how much pressure we can get. How important are the 3 NC games for the Redshirts and Sophomores who saw limited or no roles last year to gain some confidence heading into conference play?
I really like the D line because of M. Brown. I think he is going to be a force. On the outside, JJ is healthy. Reed is not bad. Neither is Williams. Add Davis in there and you are going well. Also with Hughes coming into his own along the front, Texas is building some depth.
I suppose it's the cry of the loser, but is there any suspicion of how Alabama is able is able to dominate this well and and have their pick of recruits? Or are we suppose to sit back and admire their accomplishments as we did with others who dominated like this.(USC, Lance Armstrong, Patriots)
Here is how Alabama dominates - they win. They also have a program that has a coach with an unwavering vision and plan. Texas used to have that too. But the minute Mack took his eyes off the prize, Alabama stole his players and prestige.
Although this bball season is looking very very dim, with the return of Kabango and emergence of Papi and Holland, how important is it for Texas to get a BMOC seeing how much depth Texas will have the next couple of years?
I actually really like what Texas has. This is a group that will stay together for two years. Maybe Kabongo leaves after his junior year but still the core group is going to grow to be very good as juniors and seniors.
Hook EM! Carter, What are your thought on the NO VIsit policy that Mack has put in? Out of our 8 commits, if you had to pick one who would deccomit to look elsewhere and possibly sign with another school, who would that be and why?
I think the recruits need to stand up for themselves and do what they want. They need to realize the power that they have. As always the coaches and programs are trying to control and use 18-year-old young men for their gain. Players need to be paid and they need to understand that they are the product and therefore hold the power.
Can Adrian Colbert come in and play that Safety role, or would it suit better throw Diggs back there and bring in someone like Duke or Echols?
Colbert can play there but i would like to see Diggs take it on because he is a sure tackler. Duke can play corner.
Is David Ash really fit to run a spread in college? It just looks like he never has any zip on his throws. It always looks like it takes an eternity for the ball to get to the receiver.
Look at the second half of the Alamo Bowl. When he is not allowed time to make a decision he is actually a better decision maker. It's when he sits and waits and thinks that he has issues.
Which red-shirt freshman from 2012 do you expect to make an impact in 2013?
Estelle and Riser. Colbert on defense. Davis didn't RS at D end but I think he plays a bigger role. Texas returns 19 so it is tough to break in.
Should I be concerned with the number of players that were not able to make it to Austin for Junior Days? If they don't show up to the second JD, what does that say about their interest in the longhorns? Also, we were only able to secure one commit.
you should be concerned about Texas recruiting overall. The Horns are not doing as well and the SEC is taking advantage of the situation. Texas only got 2 of the top 10 instate kids in 2013. They usually get five or six. Texas needs wins and momentum for things to change in recruiting.
We seem to be reaching out to some big-time out of state commits early in the 2014 recruiting cycle which is new for us. What are our chances of landing Fournette, Bates, or some other big OOS recruit?
Texas needs to worry about the DBs in the state first. But they can sell an RB out of state and Porter has some relationships built so that might not be a bad thing. Although no RB is going to want to come to Texas to sit and with Gray getting most of the carries for the foreseeable future, getting a stud to sit and wait is going to be tough.
Just watched a video where Mack said they were going to move Harris to an H-back/tight end role? Thoughts? We've always needed that big guy to throw to in the redzone; who do you think that will be in '13?
They do not like him that much. Not sure why. He is a huge target. But with four wide receivers there might not be much room on the field for Harris.
None of the current 2014 commits seems to mind the new "no visits after committing" policy. Have you heard any negative feedback about the policy from other potential recruits?
Nope. But it is very early.
I heard that Swoopes' weight is up to 250. With his athleticism, he has to have a strong fit on the field. Where do you see him ending up?
He an still scoot. I see him ending up with a RS on this year and waiting his turn as a RS frosh. in 2015 spring he will get a chance to compete as a starter.
Carter, where do the lobhorns stand with Julius Randle?
Right behind UK and every other program.
Dou you hate the Aggies?
I don't root for or against any teams
Is it normal to have this quiet period after the first JD? Thought we'd at least have a few more commits by now...
Happened this way last year if I recall so maybe it is normal.
Who is more likely to establish themselves as the "star" player this year, Ash, Gray, Brown, Davis, or Shipley? Also, who has the most potential?
Gray and Shipley. They are going to be focal points of the offense.
Will Texas dominate with an up tempo offense? what about defense?
Well now there is the $64,000 question. The defense has all the talent in the world. They did not get better despite what Mack Brown tells you. They played teams that were not as good. KSU torched the defense in the final game of the season scoring on three consecutive drives to start the second half. Diaz is not good at halftime adjustments and unless his talent is so far superior that which an offense can throw Texas' way then the defense will continue to struggle.
If any players are to leave early after this upcoming season, which ones do you think leave?
Diggs and that is it.
Hey Carter! Hope your day is well. Horns Nation is almost strictly an insider website now. Any chance of us commoners being able to read some of yalls great work without having to pay/be an insider?
Not sure. It's only like $3 bucks a month though.
If it were your call, what position would Jake Raulerson play at Texas? Do you think this is just a situation where the guy tries several roles during the next 4 years?
Offensive line. They are beefing him up for center. in a spread uptempo offense, Texas needs linemen who can run and he is that.
Whats your take on the new "NO VISIT" policy? Of our 8 commits, who do you feel would be the one who would decommit and sign with another school?
Don't like it. But Texas is not the only one doing it. Not sure any of the early commits will leave. They all seem pretty steadfast in their commitments.
gun to your head, who do you think replaces Mack (whenever that happens).
I really, really like Patterson. So that means he will not get the job. Beyond him it becomes more murky. Don't think Peterson is an option.Smart might get the Bama gig and he is SEC all the way.If Brian Kelly continues to do well, Texas has the money and influence to steal him.
Hello Carter. Who prospect in Defense would commit soon? Specially important Solomon Thomas, two DBs and ILB
I think Thomas is going to take his time. But he has been around the program a ton so I'm not sure there is that much fear of losing him.
What do you make of the DeLoss Dodds comment: "If you win all the time, it?s not good for the coaches or the kids" ???
My question back would be ''why not?" Sure seems to be good for Alabama.
In your opinion who will be the next commit for the class of 14?
I think kids are going to wait because of the new Texas policy. so they are going to take their time with things before committing. They may want to visit other schools before locking into Texas.
how much of a transition period do you see from the boise offense to the spread/up tempo? it seems like the coaching staff thinks the transition will be seamless and immediate but I get the impression it will take a while for the concepts to sink in.
It is going to take longer than you think. I think the biggest issue, as it has been for several years, is the offensive line. I'm just not convinced Texas has enough experienced and willing players at these spots. I like the young guys but they are not ready yet. Also Texas needs some WR depth to show up pretty quickly.
Carter, love your stuff and thanks for the work. Is Overstreet the real deal and will he get a chance at QB before he is moved to a different position?
Real deal. Great arm. Needs to work on mechanics but he has the best release of anyone on the team right now.
Hey there Carter, i read an article on Orangbloods that Julius Randle had a lot of fun at UT on saturday. He talked about how he loves KD and loves the potential of being the biggest recruit since Kevin Durant. He also said he likes the idea of being a kid from Texas who can lead the longhorns back to our glory days (just two short years ago). IF he commits to Texas does he have a Tristan Thompson caliber impact his freshman year?
I'm not sure if he is that type of player out of the gate because Texas might not need him to be that type player. he Horns have along way to go before getting him. UK is in the mix and that is never good.
How much of a quesion mark is Diaz's ability to turn things around?
Dress him a a Riddler suit. In other words, tons of questions.
what is your best guess for the starting linebackers next year?
Jinkens, Hicks and, whew the third one is tough. I'm not big on Edmond unless he can speed up his thought process. Maybe Tevin. I like his speed and tenacity.
how about the o line?
Well it depends on what James comes in and does as well as Raulerson at center. They are looking to replace Dom and possibly a guard. I like the tackles but possibly one could move inside to guard and allow the JC transfer to play tackle.
Sooner fan here, but noticed that you said "Mack took his eyes off the prize." What does that mean specifically? Lower effort level? Bungled offensive switch in '10 spring? I hear many say the same thing in Sooner nation re: Bob and I never hear much in the way of specifics. Just wanted to see what you thought Mack had done specifically. Thanks!
He got lazy in his recruiting and in his coaching. It is hard not to let complacency sink in after being so successful for so long. Mack will admit that they did not do as good a job in developing talent in 2009 and '10 as they should of and that set them up for this fall. Texas became fat and happy instead of being lean and hungry.
What is your NFL Team Even though you Cover Texas in College Football?
I don't care about any teams. I just cover teams. I do not root for or against any team in any sport.
OK guys that looks like it for the questions. Hit Max, William and me up in the forum of HornsNation if yo have any others. Thanks
