Chat with James Walker

James Walker
  (4:00 PM)

Welcome to another AFC East chat. There is plenty to talk about. So let's begin.

Keanu (Honolulu)

Hi James, do you think the Dolphins will make a play for Harvin?

James Walker
  (4:02 PM)

Percy Harvin is a really good player, Keanu. But I don't see the fit in Miami. Harvin has had issues with two head coaches in the past. I don't see him as a Joe Philbin type of player. The Dolphins are trying to stay away from potential headaches. But I think New England has a strong enough coach and culture to take on a player like Harvin.

Zach (Puopolo)

Mike Wallace, Greg Jennings, Dwayne Bowe which one is more likely to sign with Miami? What others players will Miami target besides the "Big Three" WR's?

James Walker
  (4:03 PM)

I expect Miami to go after Jennings first. He's the WR who knows the system and has the easiest learning curve. Wallace and Bowe would both have to learn a new offense. But all three are talented upgrades for the Dolphins.

Chie Wheeling, WV [via mobile]

Do you see the bills making a push for mike Wallace or bowe? Or draft the WR from Tennessee?

James Walker
  (4:05 PM)

Chie, I don't expect Buffalo to land that caliber of receiver this offseason. The Bills have No. 1 type money invested in Steve Johnson. It's kind of difficult to pay that kind of money to two WRs. I expect the Bills to look for solid, second-tier options to assist Johnson, not take over for him.

Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)

What would you think of the NFL Widen their Football Fields as the Same Length as the CFL for Saftey Reasons?

James Walker
  (4:06 PM)

I can't say I've thought about that too much, Chris. I think the NFL has already changed a lot in the form of player safety. The league needs to be cautious not to change the game too much.

Rich (New Jersey)

Hi Jim, Where does Ryan Fitzpatrick fit into Buffalo's plans this year and the possibility of John Idzik (formerly of Seattle) bring in Tarvaris Jackson as competition for Mark Sanchez?

James Walker
  (4:08 PM)

Ryan Fitzpatrick is due a $3 million roster bonus and $4.45 million in salary next season. That's a lot of money for a backup. Unless the Bills struggle to find a viable starter in the draft or free agency, I expect Buffalo to release Fitzpatrick in March.

James Walker
  (4:09 PM)

As far as Tarvaris Jackson, I'm not high on him and the Jets would be making a mistake to have him compete with Mark Sanchez. T.Jax couldn't beat out Ryan Fitzpatrick last year. That should say enough.

Johnny, Connecticut [via mobile]

As we all know, the Jets are handcuffed to Sanchez for at least one more year. Who is the most realistic option for the Jets in '13-14 to compete and/or beat out Sanchez for the starting job via free agency, trade, or the draft?

James Walker
  (4:11 PM)

The most realistic option is Matt Flynn. Jets GM John Idzik has strong ties to Seattle and the two teams could work out an even trade. The price for Alex Smith is high and I don't think the Jets can get him. Flynn competing with Mark Sanchez makes the most sense.

Alex (Anaheim)

Could this be Rex Ryan's final season in green?

James Walker
  (4:11 PM)

Rex Ryan has had back-to-back non-winning seasons and is playing for a new GM. Ryan enters this year on the hot seat and must prove he can still win.

Bob ( Nashville ) [via mobile]

What are the chances that Ellerbe from the ravens ends up in Buffalo next season?

James Walker
  (4:13 PM)

The Bills need strong LBs and Ellerbe is one of the top on the open market. However, there will be plenty of teams vying for his services. The Bills would have to overpay to catch Ellerbe's attention. He probably wants to go to a winning program if the money is equal.

Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)

What is your Favorite NFL Team?

James Walker
  (4:14 PM)

The Temple Owls, my alma mater.

Tommy (Buffalo) [via mobile]

Andy Levitre or Jairus Byrd a bigger must sign for the Bills?

James Walker
  (4:16 PM)

Both are solid players. But I think Byrd is more of a difference-maker.

Brandon (DC)

James what are the chances miami actually makes good use of the offseason money and draft picks towards winning the AFC East

James Walker
  (4:17 PM)

That's up to Jeff Ireland. He has as many resources as any team right now. Stephen Ross will let Ireland spend the money. Whether Ireland does it wisely is a bigger question.

Harry (Babylon, NY)

James - do you see John Idzik taking a more balanced, measured approach to rebuilding the Jets as opposed to the big splash moves that Mike Tannebaum always seemed to be making?

James Walker
  (4:19 PM)

If Idzik learned anything from Mike Tannenbaum's mistakes, he will not repeat it. This should be a rebuilding year in New York if the Jets are smart. But there will be pressure from coach Rex Ryan, because his job is on the line. There will be a constant push and pull there.

Matt (Stratford, NJ)

Thoughts on the Temple Bball program? Who you like in March this year?

James Walker
  (4:22 PM)

I watched about seven or eight games on TV this season when I have time. They're inconsistent and on the bubble. They can beat Syracuse and lose to Canisius. I don't know which team to expect, but they have pretty good talent.

Tommy (Buffalo) [via mobile]

If the Bills go with a QB in the draft, would Ryan Nassib be a better option than Mike Glennon, Geno Smith, Matt Barkley or any other higher rated QB due to his familiarity with the coaches and scheme, similar to Miami and Tannehill last year?

James Walker
  (4:25 PM)

I wouldn't take any QB at No. 8 this year. Maybe the combine and pro days will change my mind by April. But right now, in Feb., I don't like any QB for the Bills at No. 8. Too many questions, too many holes. If any of these players are available at the top of the second round, that's another story.

Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)

What is your Favorite NFL Team Not College Team?

James Walker
  (4:26 PM)

High Point High School, my other alma mater.

Matt (Stratford, NJ)

Chances Fitz is the Bills starter week 1?

James Walker
  (4:28 PM)

Not very high. Bills would have to strike out in free agency and the draft. But they probably will find someone they like in one avenue or the other.

Andy (Manchester, UK)

Hi James, do you see Tannehill becoming a top 10 QB next year with a better WR and TE cast in Miami?

James Walker
  (4:30 PM)

Whoa! Whoa! Slow down, Andy. Ryan Tannehill showed promise but he is not close to being a top-10 quarterback. He needs to make progress in Year 2. But let's not put unrealistic expectations on the young QB.

James Walker
  (4:31 PM)

Look at how long it took Joe Flacco to be a top-10 QB. He's always had talent and a big arm. Flacco just needed time to be more consistent and eventually carry a team. No one was asking Flacco to be a top-10 QB in his second year.

CHUCK Danbury, CT [via mobile]

if you were calling the shots for the Dolphins who would you draft at twelve and what free agent receiver would you pursue?

James Walker
  (4:36 PM)

I'm not a fan of mock drafts before free agency, because I think it's mostly for entertainment. It's nearly impossible to be accurate about the draft before teams spend money in free agency. But I will start pegging college players with teams once free agency is in the books.

Rex Ryan (NJ)

James, I'm thinking of camping out at Ed Reed's house for the start of free agency, are you in?

James Walker
  (4:39 PM)

How are you going to pay him, Rex? You can't even pay LaRon Landry due to a tight salary cap. That would be a waste of your time.

Jordan (Grand Island, NY)

Do you think spiller can be a top 3 rusher this season?

James Walker
  (4:40 PM)

Well, Chan Gailey is no longer the coach. So Spiller should get plenty of carries. That's a start.

Patrick (Wausau)

What will people remember if Brady's career ended today? The three rings early, or that he couldn't get it done in the last 9 years?

James Walker
  (4:42 PM)

Championships matter most, Patrick. Very few QBs have three and Brady is one of them. That's what I will remember him for. However, his struggles to win another one is part of his legacy. If Brady wins No. 4 next year or soon, that would erase that.

Tyler (Vancouver, WA)

Is age an issue with Greg Jennings? or do you think if your miami you would still go after him?

James Walker
  (4:44 PM)

Age and injury questions are an issue. But that's why you can't build a team through free agency. You're getting players second hand who may have some wear and tear. The Dolphins have to evaluate that.

Paphinfan (Moosic Pa)

James,Do the fins keep long or more Martin and go cheaper??

James Walker
  (4:45 PM)

I expect Long to walk. He's not worth the asking price and the Dolphins know it better than anyone. I'm not sure if Martin will start at LT. Miami could have some other options via the draft or free agency.

Jordan (Grand Island, NY)

If/When the bills do cut Fitzpatrick do you think any other team in the league will pick him up?

James Walker
  (4:48 PM)

Absolutely. There are a lot of bad quarterbacks in the league. Fitzpatrick is not the franchise starter the Bills thought he could be. But he would make a pretty good backup. Fitzpatrick will be on a roster in 2013, just not for $7.45 million in bonuses and salary.

Harry (Babylon, NY)

Do you think there is any team who would pay Revis the rumored $15mil+ he is seeking? It seems like that would be a salary cap killer for any team?

James Walker
  (4:50 PM)

Most teams willing to trade for Revis want to have him play out the season first. It could be a one-year rental to prove he's still worth the elite CB money. I don't think many teams will pay Revis $15 million right now. That includes the Jets.

Eric (Albuquerque)

do da pats resign vollmer or let him go im my opinion hez da best right tackle in the game i like how he handled watt last year

James Walker
  (4:53 PM)

Vollmer situation is interesting. He's a really good player when healthy. He's probably one of the top two or three right tackles in the NFL. However, Vollmer is consistently playing through injury. It will be interesting to see if the Patriots are willing to pay big bucks to Vollmer.

Chris (Cleveland)

Is Bowe and Wallace off the table for Miami due to Philbin not tolerating "questionable" personalities?

James Walker
  (4:55 PM)

Mike Wallace doesn't come with character questions. Last year's holdout doesn't make him a bad person. Wallace was just trying to get what he thought he was worth.

James Walker
  (4:57 PM)

Quick soapbox moment: I think it's wrong for most football fans to look down on contract holdouts. The NFL is a rough business and teams rarely get criticized for cutting players before paying the full amount of contracts. Did anyone rip the Bills for cutting Nick Barnett before the end of his contract? No. It was viewed as a good move not to overpay after the run defense was terrible.

James Walker
  (4:59 PM)

Teams don't hold up their end of contracts all the time. Players should have the same rights to hold out oand want more money if they outperform their contracts. Like I said, the NFL is a tough business.

James Walker
  (5:00 PM)

Thanks again for good questions. Let's chat again next week. Remember to check out the AFC East blog for all the latest news and updates.
