Even though you Cover the Georgia Bulldogs in College Football,What is your Favorite MLB Team?
Braves no doubt. Growing up in the South, especially with family in Atlanta, it was the only thing to do. Even though they stunk at the time.
My computer is not cooperating. Sorry that it's dragging. Hopefully that will improve.
When are we expected to hear something from Toby Johnson?
My guess is that if you were going to hear something about Toby Johnson -- at least that he'd signed with UGA -- you'd have heard it already.
But we'll see. Last I spoke to our recruiting guys, that was not resolved, but it didn't sound too promising on him coming to Georgia. I don't know for sure what is going to happen there, though.
Good afternoon David. Who do you think will start at QB in 2014? Will it be Masn, Bauta, Lemay, or could Ramsey steal the show?
I'll be surprised if it's not Mason. Should be an interesting competition. My money's on him, though.
with all the downward spiraling over the past week ,can you give us UGA fans something to be positive about?
I really don't get that mindset. They nearly played for a national title, signed a top-10 class that is going to be really good and will start the 2013 season in the top five (or thereabouts). Sounds pretty horrible to me.
Where do you see Ramik Wilson playing this year. Do you expect solid playing time from him?
That's a good question. When we discuss the 2013 lineup on our UGA message board, I always say I think he'll open the season as a starting ILB alongside Herrera. But I'm not sure. It seems to me that they could use a guy with Ramik's experience more at ILB than at OLB. He can do either, but I'm not sure where Grantham and Olivadotti are leaning with him.
Do you see Christian LeMay ever starting for UGA? Thanks?
That's a difficult question to answer. If you just picked up the Christian LeMay and transported him to 2014 without him or any of the other QBs on the depth chart changing at all, then no, I don't think he'll start. Like I mentioned on an earlier question, I think Hutson Mason will start in 2014. But LeMay will be in the competition in 2014 and 2015 if he sticks around. He's got some nice tools, but he hadn't put it together as of last season. If he does, he'll make things interesting. He can move and he throws a pretty ball. We'll see how he progresses over the next couple of years.
picked up the Christian LeMay OF 2012...I left that part out in that long-winded response...
How much effort do you think the UGA staff will put in towards flipping DeShaun Watson? I think he is going to be a huge loss if Clemson does get him.
I'm certain that he's a big target for them, Ira. I think he looks great, too. I think they have bigger needs than quarterback in this upcoming class -- particularly running back -- but you always want to get difference makers if you can get them. That's what Watson looks like to me.
Do you see UGA ever offering Leonard Fourette?
I'm sure they'd love to. You wonder whether they'll bother unless they sense some interest on his part. I don't know whether there is or not. I've only heard people say he's not leaving Louisiana, but I don't have any clue whether that's actually true.
Which was more exciting last night UGA/Alabama offensive play or students doing the Harlem Shake?
Haha. Harlem Shake no doubt. That was funny. Crazy how quickly that's become a thing. That was one ugly basketball game otherwise.
Thanks David I just needed to be reminded that the world's not ending for UGA
No biggie. I'm not one of those people that downplays the importance of recruiting rankings. By and large, the teams that finish best in that area are the teams that experience the most on-field success. But I think acting like the sky is falling over THIS class is the wrong move. They didn't close that great, but it's a very good class regardless.
How many backs do you think we take 2014
I'm leaning toward three. If it was me, I'd sign Sony Michel, Chubb and Choice if they can get all three. They might just go with two if they can get the right two. But I don't love their depth for 2013. If they run into injuries, they might have some problems.
David, who do you see being in the linebacker rotations for the next season (both outside and inside)? I have a feeling that Ryne Rankin and Reggie Carter will be eventual stars, the same feeling I had when i watched Jordan Jenkins & Olgetree before they were at UGA.
I like both of those guys. Reggie Carter is particularly interesting because he had a lot of the biggest fish interested in him before he hurt his knee. My view is that he would have been one of the most highly regarded LBs if not for the ACL injury his junior year. So Georgia might have gotten a steal there. He's a big kid already.
I guess to answer your question, I lean toward Herrera and Wilson as starters. But I wouldn't be shocked to see all four of the ILB signees contribute in some way. Carter and Rankin have an advantage since they're here already. And it wouldn't be a huge surprise to see them redshirt one of the four. But I'm betting they'll find roles for them on special teams at minimum and try to get them on the field a lot against the tomato cans on the schedule.
Do you see Vasser getting any PT this year? I think he will just be pushed down the depth chart with Floyd and Bellamy and others coming in?
Definitely. No discounting experience. He'll definitely be in the rotation, if not starting, at the start of the season. He had a role before he got hurt last year and actually had decent production all things considered. I don't remember the stat off the top of my head, but he had something like 4.5 tackles for loss in five games. I wouldn't be surprised to see him start the opener at all.
In saying that, who do you feel is the best/most significant sign in our recent class?
Depends on how you want to look at it. For this year, I think Jonathon Rumph might make the biggest impact even though receiver is not the biggest position of need. Then you've got the numerous newcomers on defense (Matthews, the LBs, the DLs). Over the long haul, I'll take Tramel Terry.
Do you think Ray Drew is going to be ready to step it up next season?
That's definitely what they're hoping for. He actually started to play much better down the stretch last season. Seemed like he was starting to figure things out at DE. Ray is another guy that I'm expecting to be a starter once the season starts, but he's got to earn the job. Can't say he's necessarily done that yet.
Do you think that Todd Gurley will be in New York for the Heisman by the end of the year?
No. But not because of anything he does wrong. A, I think Georgia's offense will be too balanced between run and pass for his numbers to look ridiculous. B, Murray will be a Heisman candidate too and that would hurt Gurley's cause. C, He's still going to share carries with Marshall and won't put up numbers that he could put up otherwise without such a talented player in the backfield with him.
All of that said, if he improves on last season's numbers and they're in the running for another national title, he's definitely going to be in the discussion.
Who is your pick to win this years Super Bowl
Want to say Falcons. Gotta figure the Niners break through at some point. I'll take them.
Who do you think becomes the primary receiver, or do you see the catches being spread out a bit more?
The catches were really spread out already when everyone was healthy. Between King, Bennett, Brown and Mitchell, there would have been a logjam. I think it will be something like that next year with Mitchell in the lead. Mitchell, Bennett, Conley, Rumph will probably be the top four and then you've got Wooten, Tibbs, Scott-Wesley and the freshmen. Should be interesting to see how many of those guys are actually part of the rotation.
David do you see TJ Stripling making any sort of pact besides special teams?
I don't know to be honest. It sounded like he was only starting to get back to full health last season, but there was a pretty decent player in front of him...So now that Jarvis is no longer blocking his path, maybe? I haven't seen enough of him to think he becomes a star, but I just haven't seen that much of him. That might be worth a story during spring practice. So thanks for the idea.
All right y'all. Good chat. Spring practice is about two weeks away. I'll be back in two Wednesdays and we can discuss what's happening just before they hit the field.
