Thanks for joining me on a soggy day in Port St. Lucie. Let's get started ...
With a good spring, does Zack Wheeler go north with the club, or is a June call-up more likely, good spring or not?
Wheeler likely follows the track of Matt Harvey, who went to the minors last year following a solid spring training. The bottom line is, barring an injury, the rotation is set with Johan Santana, Shaun Marcum, Jon Niese, Harvey and Dillon Gee. A summer call-up is the likelihood.
If Terry's contract isn't renewed after the season, who do you see as the frontrunner? Wally Backman?
I'll only speak internally about candidates. I'd say bench coach Bob Geren, who has the ties to the front office from Oakland, would be a candidate. And Tim Teufel, who has definitely served his time and is tight with Mets ownership.
What do you think the batting order will be against Righties and what do you think it will be against lefties?
Let me start with just the actual lineups:C-John Buck1B-Ike Davis2B-Daniel Murphy3B-David WrightSS-Ruben TejadaLF-Lucas DudaCF-Collin Cowgill/Kirk Nieuwenhuis platoonRF-Marlon Byrd/Mike Baxter platoon ...
So let's try to figure it out, and just presume Ruben Tejada is the blanket leadoff hitter. Then you may be looking at: Tejada, Murph, Wright, Ike, Duda, Buck, Kirk, Baxter vs. righties.
Vs. lefties I suppose you'd flip Buck and Duda and slot in Cowgill and Byrd at the bottom. But Cowgill could also lead off.
Hey Adam, What's your perception of Cowgill? How good is he really? and do you have any personal Breakout candidates for this desperate outfield?
He was the odd-man out in Oakland and was traded for Jefry Marte, who is not exactly a premium prospect, but I think he'll be useful as part of a platoon in center field. Skills aside, I do like the reputation for being hard nosed/having a work ethic. But let's not go overboard with the hype.
Odds Wheeler spends entire season in AAA?
Doubt that. He's too good. They'll find room for him. And there's no way five pitchers go wire to wire.
So are you buying Fred Wilpon's assertion that money will no longer be an issue for the Mets going forward? Seems like we've heard that before...
There is so much coming off the payroll (Santana/Bay), that they can get a couple of bigger free agents and still see the payroll not go up.
What are the front office saying about the dominican kid the mets got in the dickey trade.is he just a throw in or can he be someone to keep an eye on?
Wuilmer Becerra. Very high on him as an outfielder. More than a throw-in. He had a seven-figure signing bonus by the Blue Jays, if I remember correctly. A ways away though, since he's only 18. He had last season interrupted because he was hit in the face with a baseball.
Hey Adam, what do you think the Mets eventual plan is for Jennry Mejia? Does he have the potential to be a decent starter, or could he be a future closer for them?
Most scouts project him as a reliever, but he'll work as a starting pitcher in big league camp once the visa is cleared up.
Adam, as someone who has long been sick and tired of the Wilpons, I hear Fred's comments yesterday about "no payroll limitations going forward" and immediately think he's lying. Not to mention, he conveniently said it the day after the last big-ticket free agent signs his deal. Do you buy that Wilponzi's have the capacity to even fund a $90mm payroll, let alone one in the $100-$140 range? I don't.
The qualifier Fred said is that if Sandy thinks the spending is prudent. Given there's always a team that overbids for a free agent -- say the Yankees to re-sign Cano next offseason -- I can see Sandy always having the built-in excuse/cover for ownership that it just wasn't prudent to spend at that level.
With Santana & Bay coming off the books, do you think the Mets make a legit play at Robinson Cano next offseason?
Fred ain't getting in a bidding war with the Yankees, who have expressed a desire in recent days to re-sign him.
Adam, do you see Alderson making a move for an outfielder any time soon ? Stubbs ? Bourjez with the Angels ?
Alderson said this is likely it. You always look around in spring training, but the types of players that become available are typically guys who are not going to make another club who are out of options or something like that -- not the kind of difference-maker the Mets are going to need.
Hi Adam , How can i get tickets gor the all-star game?
Right now, you'd have to buy Mets season tickets. They say they will make it generally available to the public at some point if there are leftovers, but I'm not sure it will ever get to that point.
Where do Cecini and Nimmo start the year? Any chance either gets to AA this year?
I would forecast Brandon Nimmo for Savannah, the low-A full-season team. Gavin Cecchini same thing.
I have a good feeling about Lucas Duda's 2013, but what is the backup plan -- if any -- should he not do the job?
I don't think there is one. If there were an answer, he'd be playing center field or right field.
Does Fred Wilpon have some kind of pathological disorder? First he says the Madoff mess will have no effect on finances, then he says that it did but he's past it but that they can't spend money until us fans start spending. Whenever I hear the guys in Houston talk about their long term plan I weep inside. It would be so nice if ownership was honest with us.
This may sound like a ridiculous question, but would it make sense for the Mets to try to negoiate a buy-out with Bobby Bonilla?
A buyout of the buyout? Remember, the $1.2 million per year for 25 years was the buyout of his deal with Mets, which I think had about $5 million owed when they dumped him.
If Parnell starts the season as the closer, how long of a leash do you think he'll have? Does it all depend on the health of Francisco?
If he runs with it, it's his. If not, the Mets are pretty much screwed, but I suppose Brandon Lyon would be next in the succession. Terry Collins said he'd also get Josh Edgin and LaTroy Hawkins ninth-inning work during spring training.
Is David Wright the biggest threat to steal a base on the team?
You know what? Maybe. Probably Collin Cowgill, though.
do you feel the front office dropped the ball regarding the draft pick situation, they should have gone to mlb sooner than latter.
My understanding is that MLB was firm in its stance on the CBA interpreation, so you had to file a grievance. And, it seems, you cannot file a grievance until you have an actual case, like having Bourn ready to sign.
Adam, If we are out of contention in July, I see trades for Santana, Francisco and Buck. Do you agree ? Anyone else to add ?
The good news is the Mets have amassed a lot of players on one-year deals that could be spun off aside from Johan Santana, who would be an obvious candidate: Brandon Lyon, Scott Atchison, LaTroy Hawkins, Marlon Byrd. And let's not forget that if Travis d'Arnaud is ready, John Buck could be traded, not recede to backup catcher.
You guys didn't get Michael Bourn, but are you guys looking at Kyle Lohse?
Mets done in free agency for winter.
any chance that Mets re visit jose vlaverde? Being that Parnell did'nt handle the job too well or Lyon is more a 7th or 8th inning guy...ofcourse if Francisco is out for an extended vime
Sandy Alderson says he's not going back into free agency because of Frank Francisco's situation. He's done with free agency, he said.
Season win total for the Mets opened at 74 in Nevada. If you get anyone questioning your projections, tell them they are welcome to come visit our great state and put their money where their mouth is.
Will do. Would like to visit anyway to watch a 51s game now that they're affiliated with the Mets.
Hey Adam! i enjoy reading your blog! I have a hypothetical question. Lets say Santana has a stellar first half like last year and has no health setbacks, what kind of prospects could the mets get for him at the deadline.
If the Mets pick up the remaining salary, or nearly all of it, there's no reason why they shouldn't search for a deal like Wheeler-for-Beltran. That said, Wheeler-for-Beltran is a atypical these days as teams hold onto their prospects. The Giants were atypically impulsive this year.
If the Mets are off to a solid start heading into June and Johan is a big part of that, do you foresee Sandy holding onto him or is he going to trade him (if he can get a solid return) no matter what? I guess what I'm asking is how committed do you think Sandy is to sacrificing this season in the service of a brighter future?
Will be fascinating. The Mets were not terribly far out two years ago when he traded Beltran, if I remember correctly.
Keith Law wrote that the 2013 Mets starting OF could be one of the worst in the modern era - agree or disagree?
It's not good, but I asked Mark Simon, and he said it may be the worst since the 2012 Houston Astros.
Anything stopping Familia from making an impact in the bullpen this season? Or does he need more seasoning?
Had the Mets not signed the glut of relievers (Feliciano, Atchison, Lyon, Hawkins) late, Familia would probably have been more of a factor to make the team. Now, someone has to become injured/disappoint for him to squeeze in, it seems.
Purely hypothetical, but assuming Bourn signed before Hairston, do you think Alderson would have matched Chicago's offer to Hairston?
And if Upton were traded first, too. Sandy potrayed it as a timing thing, not financial decision.
sandy had said he will continue to watch brian wilson, any news?
Watch, maybe. Doubtful he'll sign him anytime soon. The Mets actually were annoyed they had staff, including Dan Warthen, travel to UCLA to watch him and he could only throw 20 pitches at low velocity because it was too soon after Tommy John surgery.
I know it's still early to tell, but do you think David Wright has the potential to one day be a Hall of Famer?
Maybe. But he may fall into the very, very good but not Hall of Fame category. How many players of this era would you put ahead of him. There are probably a good number.
i liked your report on feliciano a couple of days ago. has he struck out ike davis in camp yet?
Hah. Batting practice starts Monday. I'll be watching for that matchup.
Serious question: what do the Mets think about Jose Reyes being out of their division and playing (exiled?) in Toronto? Jose's not going to like those cold April and May nights (not to mention the late September ones).
Dome in Toronto.
why haven't the mets made the playoffs since 2006?
Got a few hours?
All due respect to Houston - JD Matrinez would be an upgrade for us right now
You're on the record.
Anyway, now that we've devolved into breaking down the Astros' 2012 outfield, let's call it a day. Thanks for chatting. I'll be back next week. You can always ask me questions on Twitter: @AdamRubinESPN
