Chat with Michael Collins

Michael Collins
  (3:00 PM)

Well it's been a while. Miss me? Yeah, I missed y'all too. Here's a question for you, if Tiger doesn't break Jack's record is he the greatest of all time? Before you answer, think about Jordan compared to Bill Russell when it comes to rings.BRING IT!!!

Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)

Even though you cover golf, what is your favorite MLB Team?

Michael Collins
  (3:01 PM)

Been a Philadelphia Phillies fan from birth!!

Kyle (D.C.)

Do you think Riviera is ever going to change anything on that course? It has been like 20 years since their last major change

Michael Collins
  (3:02 PM)

There is no room on the property for big changes unless they plan on hitting shots up into people's homes and putting in ski lifts.

pj (midlo)

any tour groupies for the Loopers? does pga mark pin locations before the tourney begins to allow preparation by players and caddies or is only known day of round or night before?

Michael Collins
  (3:05 PM)

no groupies for caddies. Not that I didn't check back in my single days! hahaAs far as hole locations, they put a dot on the green, Wednesday there's a dot where Thursday's hole is going to be, Thurs. for Fri., etc. etc.I also saved all my pin sheets because they will use the same hole locations year after year, it's why experience and good notes from a caddie matter.

Kyle (D.C.)

Do you Tiger has had enough time to fix his Driving mishaps, where he is spraying golf balls so far left and right it seems like he is doing it on purpose?

Michael Collins
  (3:06 PM)

He's got plenty of time before the Masters. And for Tiger that's what he's prepping for.

Henry H. (New York, NY)

If you could make a dark-horse prediction for the match-play next week, who would it be?

Michael Collins
  (3:06 PM)

Scott Piercy. Making his first appearance, if he gets past his first match... watch out

Marc (Malden, MA)

Why didn't Tiger play at Pebble Beach? It's Freaking Pebble Beach.

Michael Collins
  (3:08 PM)

I can only guess but, I'd say he just didn't wanna play a week, take a week off, then play 3 in a row.

Alex (Anaheim)

What is the future of belly putters?

Michael Collins
  (3:12 PM)

I really hope the R&A and USGA reconsider. They're making a rules based on looks not science and for the elite instead of the every day hacker. When and if it goes thru, there are going to be lots of my buddies that tell 'em where to kiss it cause they are not gonna give up anchoring.

Ed (Long Island)

Going back a few weeks, when Stallings had the big lead going into Sunday, and not a proven winner, the night before how much was the caddy pre-spending his 10% share in his head and does he go hole by hole how much he is losing then on Sunday?

Michael Collins
  (3:14 PM)

He may have thought about how cool it'd be to win, but we all know how hard it is to close. And when you're on the course battling you don't have time to think about the money. Just trying to get your man on track.

Keith H (Seattle)

I say we put that Swedish chick who takes on spider bites with golf tees up there with Shoshana from Boston as the Goddesses of the Golf Chats.

Michael Collins
  (3:16 PM)

AGREED!! Haha

Michael Collins
  (3:17 PM)

If there was one tournament you've never seen the top guys play and you could see them play, which one would it be?

Henry H. (New York, NY)

As more and more top European stars are moving to the US to play on the PGA Tour, do you for-see the EPGA trying to merge to create a Worldwide tour?

Michael Collins
  (3:23 PM)

One of the reasons they have made the WGC's count on both the PGA and European Tours is so now each tour can have guys play both tours and now maybe join both. I don't see them combining, but they are becoming better at "sharing".

Tom (L.A.)

Wish Mickelson would come up my way to play Sherwood in December once.

CH (Torrance)

Mike, when multiple courses are used for a PGA tourney (pebble beach) do the pin locations remain the same each day until all the golfers has played them?

Michael Collins
  (3:25 PM)

Yeah. Great question. So at Pebble Beach (and the other two courses) the hole stays in the same spot for three days because different pros play the hole Thursday-Saturday. Then they move it for Sunday at Pebble.

Tom (L.A.)

My guesses as to why Tiger doesn't play Pebble: 1) Doesn't like the bumpy greens. 2) Doesn't like the 6 hour rounds. 3) Doesn't like the shenanigans. As we know, there are many shenanigans at Pebble (and Phoenix as well) and Tiger doesn't do shenanigans.

Michael Collins
  (3:28 PM)

Bumpy greens... check Torrey Pines, how many wins Tiger got there?6 hour rounds and shenanigans... he's played and won Pebble in years past and he doesn't get put on the "celebrity" rotation.

Patrick (Philly, PA)

Where you would rank the Match Play? Sixth biggest event of the Tour schedule (behind the majors and the PLAYERS being fifth)?

Michael Collins
  (3:31 PM)

I'd rank it 7th. Behind majors, Wells Fargo, and Players

John (Denver)

MC: Thanks again for the chat. How about your top three interviews you'd like to do, but haven't gotten the opportunity, for whatever reason?

Michael Collins
  (3:36 PM)

My pleasure.Would love to do a sit-down with Mike Davis. Arnold Palmer, never got to sit down one on one with him. And would love to talk golf with the President.

Jared (Jersey Shore)

What happened to Anthony Kim?

Michael Collins
  (3:40 PM)

He's been hurt but I couldn't tell you why he hasn't been out lately.

Henry H. (New York, NY)

When they have the AT&T Pro-Am, will Cypress Point ever be in the rotation? That course is epic!

Michael Collins
  (3:41 PM)

It used to be. But I think they are not really keen on having the event at their course. It's also a bit too short for the tour.

Tom (L.A.)

Ah the challenge is on: 1) Tiger on the greens at Torrey this year: "The greens are bad." 2) Tiger on the greens at Pebble at 2010 U.S. Open: "The greens are atrocious." (This comment rankled the head groundskeeper so much he actually spoke out in defense of the course.) He's won at Pebble and Phoenix in the past and doesn't play either anymore, so...

Michael Collins
  (3:42 PM)

When did Tiger win Phoenix?

Patrick (Philly, PA)

This may have been asked already, but what's your take on the USGA closing the Public Links?

Michael Collins
  (3:47 PM)

I'm not happy about it because so many good players have come thru that event but I understand why they did it. You can't keep leaking oil (money) forever

Lyle (NM)

I guess Henry must be too young to remember when Cypress Point was part of the rotation. CP opted out because their membership is(was?) extremely exclusive and they chose not to bend to the PGA's desire that their courses' memberships include women and minorities.

guest (Palm Beach)

GOAT question_ That should be openended unless you live forever. The better ques -greatest in each ERA. As for team sports, how can you reasonably specify, since one man cannot win a game. So I think Jack was the best of his ERA -late 60 to early 80. Tiger ERA has not yet ended

Michael Collins
  (3:53 PM)

Well hello there reasonable thinker... but what fun is that!

gp (nd)

So does that GOAT question mean that Faldo had an era too to fill the gap?

Shoshana (Boston)

Pebble is softer than Torrey, and Tiger actually often ends up in the celeb rotation (including last yr), but guessing he feels he has enough events on his schedule. at the moment

Henry H. (New York, NY)

Yea, too young to remember CP in the rotation. What is the biggest obstacle for Tiger in a major this year? Last year we was awesome in the first two round and fell apart on the weekend, do you see the same thing? Or do you think he is more confident in the mechanics of his new swing and will be able to carry that thru 4 round and finally end the major drought.

Michael Collins
  (3:58 PM)

Tiger's biggest obstacle will be his short game on the weekend at a major. If he gets that worked out he'll contend again and I think he will. Watch out for him at the US Open this year.

Shoshana (Boston)

As to GOAT debate, I think the best way is to compare dominance over time. I think Tiger at his peak is better than Jack was at his peak. (and would take Tiger in GOAT), but Jack has had a better career. Sort of like MJ is the GOAT, but Russel has the most titles

gp (nd)

Michael, where do you stand on the Vijay issue, should he be suspended right away for admitting to the spray, or should there be a long due process? I know it sounds like they want to test the spray, but the tour had warned the guys against using that spray.

Michael Collins
  (4:01 PM)

At first I didn't want him suspended, then I thought about the Olympics and wanted him suspended, now that they dropped wrestling, to heck with it, I'm back thinking he shouldn't be. But It'll probably change again next week!

Michael Collins
  (4:02 PM)

Well this stinks.... I gotta go and now is when I'm getting a ton of questions. You guys better all be here on time for the next chat!!@ESPNCaddie on twitterESPNCaddie@gmail.com is the email. Talk to y'all soon!!MC
