Ivory is here!
What do you see as your role on the Mystics?
I see myself as being the leader out on the floor. That's the position of the point guard. I can see myself going out there and playing with a lot of energy and hoping I can get them back to the playoffs. Definitely being a floor general out on the court.
Do you plan on trying to meet President Obama while in DC? Think he will attend a Mystics game?
Absolutely! I would love to sneak into the White House and meet Obama! I would love to invite him to a game.
Do you think the Mystics can make the championship this year?
I think with the coaching staff that we have, we can be contenders. We can be a championship team. We have to be focused and dedicated and work hard. With me, I always dream high. I believe high. I believe in the organization and the team.
What have you been up to in the offseason?
I'm actually playing in Israel this offseason. I'm playing here right now. That's how I get my exercise, workouts. We have a lot of down time over here. We play one time a week. Playing overseas after every WNBA season is my offseason.
@Ivorylatta12 First I would like to say Welcome to Washington DC! We are happy to have you here as our Point Guard! What made you pick to the Mystics and the city of Washington to sign with?
I would have to say Coach T, just talking to him on the phone. I was excited. Just talking to him on the phone made me want to suit up and play for him. The great things I've heard about him. I'm excited to learn from him and the other coaches. DC is a great city to have a WNBA team. I'm looking forward to that....and seeing Obama!
How has your game changed since first entering the league in 2007?
My game has changed a lot. That's due to me being more mature. The maturity level off the court has helped me become a better player on the court. My workouts have changed. My eating habits have changed. Just me learning the game. My first year in the league I was able to sit back and watch other great point guards. I learned from them and now I am at the stage where I can help a team win games and hopefully win a championship some day.
Can you comment a bit on playing for Coach Hatchell and if you have spoken to her about her 900th win milestone?
Wow...it was amazing playing for her. That's my second mom. It was great playing for her. I learned so much. She made and molded me into the lady I am today. She got me mentally prepared for the WNBA. I haven't spoken to her yet. I spoke to her the night before her win. She called me and congratulated me on signing with Washington, but I didn't want to say she was going to get the 900th win. I talk to her regularly.
I'm excited about bringing my 3 daughters to Mystics games to see you play this year. What can we expect?
You can expect a lot of enthusiasm. A lot of excitement. More wins. You can expect us to play hard. The great coach we have now, it will be different. You can expect a lot of fun. Getting back to the fundamentals.
In honor of black history month, who is your hero?
Wow, that is the coolest question! A non-basketball question....I would have to say Martin Luther King. He is an inspiration not only to me but to everybody in the world. He's given everybody an opportunity to live another day and enjoy each others' company. That's what I'm all about. I love to do new things and meet new people. To go out there and live your dreams, whatever it is, basketball, football, and do it with passion. He's my hero for sure.
Hi Ivory Latta I just wanted to ask you how do you feel being apart of Black History month?
I think it's a great moment. All of the good things that African-Americans have done for this country. To go and read what they've done, it amazes me everything they've done. I'm blessed to be a part of it. Each year, I try to post something about what someone has done in the past. It's a great feeling. A cool feeling.
What are your plans after basketball??
I would love to be a college coach, to be honest. I would love to. I would also like to train. Do some training in basketball, train kids. I see a lot of fundamental issues. They like to play, but they don't work on the fundamentals. But I think my calling is coaching.
When you want "me time" how do you treat yourself?
I don't get too much of that! When I do, I just like to sit in the house and watch Lifetime Movie Network. I like to watch it all day! I like to watch it and order food. I have the old school Nintendo now. I like to get away from the gym and catch up on the shows and movies.
With this being Black History Month how do feel as an African-American player playing in the Nations Capital at the same time as our President Obama is an African-American
Great question. It feels good, because it feels like I'm a part of history. That was one of the most historic moments of my whole life and in the world. Just being in DC alone, I think it will be overwhelming, but I have a job to do. It's a blessing and I'm happy to be a part of the historic moment. I hope he sits courtside!
What is your favorite memory so far during your career?
My second year playing in Israel, I hit the winning basketball to give my team their first Israeli championship. That was the coolest.
Being overseas, what is the first thing you will do once you touch down in the states?
I'm going to get me some food! Oh my goodness. I'm going to the nearest McDonalds. As soon as I get out of customs, I'm going to get food, food and FOOD!
I was wondering do you know when you will attend your first practice with the Mystics?
I plan on coming back, I probably have another month or so here in Israel. I will be there the first day of training camp. Absolutely.
Thank you for doing the chat. It's been fun and interesting. I appreciate it. I look forward to putting on that Mystics jersey this summer!
