Welcome to this week's HornsNation chat. Texas begins spring practices on Thursday and hosts its second junior day on Saturday, so we should have plenty to talk about today. Oh, and Texas basketball's season hasn't ended. Bring on all your questions and let's get this started.
Do the Texas coaches want Desmond Harrison to show up and take the LT job to move Hawkins inside, or are the coaches simply going to take the 5 best performers in practice as the starters?
Good question. In an ideal world, Harrison comes in this summer and makes the LT job his and that lets UT shuffle its linemen to put the best five on the field. But that's asking an awful lot of the guy, too, so we can't just assume it's going to work out. I think we see the best five on the field in 2013 and that could me lots of position changes.
TEXAS WILL SIGN RANDLE AND FRAZIER MARK MY WORD AND I LIKE THAT LITTLE POINT GAURD OUT OF HOUSTON TAYLOR....
Bold prediction. I can't say I agree. But I respect your confidence.
Is this years team struggles more about the experience in the players or the developing from coaching? You can argue both.
If you're talking about the 2012 team, it was clearly both. The 2013 team is loaded with experience, so that really can't be an excuse anymore.
I have a lot of questions, hope you dont mind Max
Of course not. Let's get into them.
How many commitments do you think UT will get on Saturday? And who from?
I think Texas will get a few commitments on Sunday, after the recruits go home and think it over. It just depends on which visitors pick up offers. We've talked to several this week who said they would commit right after the visit if offered, but no guarantee they'll get one.
is there any chance that we could land DSG and Jamal Adams? i think if we get one the other would go somewhere else but it would really be nice ton have them both!
I like Texas' chances better with Jamal Adams. I have a feeling DSG will end up going with Texas A&M, but he does like Texas more than most people think.
How do you see Oklahoma doing next year? they lost some key guys and i personally think they could have an 8-5, 9-4 year at best. I would say worse but i dont under estimate Blake bell, even though i havnt seen him throw a pass yet
He's played a lot of games the past few years, but I really don't know what to expect from Bell in 2013. I see flaws on this Oklahoma team, maybe more so than in most years, but I'd be surprised if they were as bad as a 7- or 8-win team.
Over/under 500 yards rushing for David Ash on the season?
Under. He has 244 career rushing yards. I do think the quarterback run game will get incorporated a bit more in 2013, but there's too many playmakers on this team to expect 500 from Ash.
Do you see Kendall Thompson starting at linebacker with Jordan Hicks & Steve Edmond? And who do you see starting the year at safety?
Going into the spring, yeah, I think that's most likely. But don't rule out Peter Jinkens. He has room to bulk up this offseason, and his instincts are really good. At safety, Adrian Phillips and then it's anyone's guess. I want to see what Adrian Colbert can do this spring.
Maxamillion, put a percentage next to each one in terms of "likely to transfer"...Brewer, Overstreet, Swoopes....my money is on Brewer at 45% what say you?
I don't think it's fair to any of those guys to make those judgments until after spring ball. But if it's going to be one guy, I'd guess Brewer only because I think Overstreet would be more willing to do a position switch if necessary.
How good of a chance does Goodwin have in going in the 2nd round of the draft?
NFL Combine is tomorrow and you just know that guy is going to light it up. I do think he's a round 2-3 guy but his speed is going to open a lot of doors for him.
Who is the DB that Texas must have so many good ones in TX this year but cant have them all.
To me the answer is Darrion Johnson, but you can throw a lot of names out there. He's a dynamic athlete and an impressive cornerback prospect, and I really like Texas' chances for him right now.
The next UT commit well be.....
...one of Saturday's visitors. One guy I'd keep an eye on: Jasper C Terrell Cuney.
Everything Texas huh? Any other olympic sports you see Texas doing well in the national stage, similar to Ladies Volleyball already?
Well, I guess golf is becoming an Olympic sport, so you could say men's golf. Beau Hossler makes his UT debut this spring.
Hey Max, What exactly went down with A'shawn-or was he just really not that into coming? Also, thoughts on the DL depth, I think Shiro Davis becomes a big weapon for the pass rush and hearing good things about Cotrell as well.
What exactly went down with A'Shawn is a great question. I talked to him a lot during the final few weeks and I just don't think he was that in love with Texas. I think he stuck to that commitment as a backup plan and he was going out-of-state all along. I don't think Texas did anything wrong here, it just wasn't going to work out.
As for defensive line depth, Shiro Davis is no question the X-factor for Texas. If that guy can become an every-down pass rushers (and I think he can), you're in good shape. Texas loses 6 defensive linemen after this season so they really need to take advantage of their depth now.
Who do you see having a better future? Overstreet, Swoopes, or Heard.
Heard. That is, until Texas gets its 2015 QB recruit. Then I'll say that guy. That's how it works, folks. The next guy down the line is always the most popular one.
I've heared people speculate Jordan Hicks playing all three LB positions. Where do you see him lining up and who will play play LB alongside him?
Hicks has the versatility to play all three spots, there's no doubt about that. Going into the spring I still think it's Edmond and Thompson/Jinkens alongside him.
Who will be the Starting Quarterback for Texas in 2013?
Why has UT stepped back from Edwin Freeman and Myles Garrett? Pipe dreams now?
I don't think they've stepped back. Both guys just seem to be leaning elsewhere. Texas A&M and TCU are both in strong shape for Freeman and Garrett.
Do you see any immediate impact of true freshman Tyrone Swoopes, or do you see a redshirt in his near future? Or is it too early to tell?
A question from Whitewright, so I'm guessing you're a Swoopes fan. I think the best thing for him would be a redshirt, especially with a third-year starter coming back. If he gets that year off to develop, it's going to make him much more prepared to run Texas' offense.
I am NOT a Horns fan and I am moving to Austin next month, how much am I going to hate it?
I think you're going to be just fine. Austin is a big city, big enough that if you don't want the college town vibe it's easily avoidable. But I can't help you with the traffic.
Does Ash have the quick decision-making and pinpoint accuracy to be an effective up-tempo spread QB?
That, my friend, might be the question of the spring. I like his accuracy and think he can make all the throws (at least, when healthy), but the Alamo Bowl was just a small taste. We know he's comfortable with creating plays and making throws on the run, but he has to make strides this spring when it comes to that quick decision-making.
Which player has the best chance to win the Heisman for Texas in 2013?
I guess you'd have to say Johnathan Gray. Though if Texas is contending this season and winning a lot of games, the Heisman typically favors the quarterback in that situation.
Might be a dumb question but, When i look at the signing classes, i dont see a duke thomas.. is that a nickname? haha what class was he part of?
He was in the 2012 class. Went by Orlando Thomas in high school. He has a chance to be pretty special this year, in my opinion.
You gotta love them aggies, how they are so much better than them Longhorns! GIGEM GIGEM GIGEM
Thanks for your question.
MAX!!! Tell me a little about Duke Thomas who could slide into the vacant Corner slot due to Diggs going to safety.
I don't think Diggs to safety is a sure thing. You don't make that move unless you're really confident about Thomas or whoever takes over that corner spot. But Duke played in all 13 games, led UT in special teams tackles and has a chance to be a good cover corner. I think we'll see him more in nickel and dime defenses, too.
Who will be harder to replace Okafor or Vaccaro?
Vaccaro, and it's not even close. He was asked to do so much in Texas' defense in 2012, especially at the line of scrimmage, and there's far more question marks about Texas' returning safeties than ends at this point.
How many yards is All-Day Gray gonna rack up next season
Put me down for 1,100.
Will we be using the TE postion in this new offense or are we simply going to line up our best four WR? Speaking of which, aside from Davis and Shipley, who are our best WRs?
Yes, the tight ends won't disappear. If M.J. McFarland proves he can be a reliable blocker, he'll get on the field a lot in 2013. The best WR behind those two, to me, is probably Cayleb Jones right now but could very well be Kendall Sanders or another guy by the time the spring game rolls around.
Have you heard about who is going to the next great Duane Akina product out of DBU? Quandre will only get better. Can Carrington take the next step? Are looking at another Blake Gideon-type freshman at safety?
The new great one will be Antuwan Davis, the CB signee from Bastrop. He joins the program this summer and I think he'll get good playing time as a freshman.
Any news on basketball recruits frazier or randle? Why cant texas get the top recruits anymore? are kids just not into texas basketball anymore?
Randle was at Kansas this weekend and should be deciding by the end of the month. Frazier visited but I think Texas is slipping on his list. Texas needs a strong return to national prominence if it hopes to get back to scooping up McDonald's All-Americans
Any word on K.Kinner? I think he took the ACTs recently.
He came up short on his SAT results and should be hearing back on his ACTs by February 25. I don't think it's going to work out for him and Texas at this point, but we'll see.
Considering Texas is loosing 6 (!) D-linemen next year, do you see them go the JUCO way to get some players who can play immediately? I believe they should take advantage of Coach Bo Davis' connection in the state of Mississippi and their JUCO ranks. One more question, how do you see the LB group after the spring? Hopefully the Cobbs' experiment is over and Diaz finally sees that Jinkens and Tevin Jackson should start at the outside and then let Edmond and Hicks battle for the ILB spot. As you can see, I'm not very high on Thompson.
Texas won't have trouble loading up on DEs in this 2014 class but I would look to the juco ranks for more immediate solutions at defensive tackle. On the LBs, it's anyone's guess beyond Hicks but I think you make a good point about the OLBs.
What Texas school will be the biggest threat or who is the biggest threat to UT's recruiting in Texas? Tech, A&M, TCU, or Baylor.
Biggest threats to Texas in my mind fall in this order: Texas A&M, Alabama/LSU, Oklahoma, Baylor, TCU, Tech.
Any cause for concern in regards to the commitments of our 2 guys at All Saints in Forth Worth?
No. I think both guys are just getting a little tired of all the attention they get on Twitter. Both are very proud and passionate dudes who will be leaders for this 2014 Longhorn class.
Remember vincent taylor DT from Madison High that loved UT? He would of committed!!! Do you think Texas regrets not offering after Ashawn left us?
Yeah, Vincent would have committed in a heartbeat in the spring. But so much time passed that I don't think a UT offer would've swayed him in the final week before signing day.
These aggies huh? Now the LSU fans have to put up with them.
What kind of season does Joe have? i think now he will be in more of a cody johnson roll do you think?
Yeah, I think Bergeron showed us in 2012 he's a more potent weapon when he's not used every down. He'll still be one of the nation's best short-yardage backs this year, even if it means fewer totes.
Am I being foolish or do I see Texas having big potential as a national championship dark horse. I think we as fans became impatient and now our two classes got experience. Plus I think Applewhite learning some things from Harsin good and bad only helps him become a better O coordinator. What say you?
A case can be made for Texas being a dark horse contender. Will Applewhite have all the answers immediately? It'll take time. I know Texas fans don't have any patience left, but I think this roster is in very good shape and all the ingredients, from a personnel standpoint, are there for a run.
Is Rick Barnes at all on the hot-seat?
He'll get a pass for this year. But it's a little warmer, sure.
Any commitment scoming for the second Jr day
We'll address that Thursday in The Heard on HornsNation. There are several guys who, if offered, definitely could commit.
All right guys, that's all I've got for today. Thanks for your questions and keep reading our stuff over on HornsNation.com. We definitely appreciate it. Have a great day.
