I had a few bugs to work out to get on the chat today...but we are finally in!...so let's get this partaaaayyyy started.
hi-mark-glad you are back/my ?is do you think 13 can make it tru the 1st 11-races without a park & start?/who do you think would be a better bottom driver 10 or 13/cause my stragedy is 2 take 48-18-5-55-either 10 or 13
Thanks John...I think somewhere in the first 13 they might have to take a step back, but I'll check on that for Sunday so please ask me again then. I'm not sure 48 is a good play for here at Daytona...I'm looking at my bottom guy at this point Jeff Burton at 16.5 and hoping he'll grow a little and dropping down to Kenseth and Tony to save some space at the top..that's my initial take that will probably change after Thursday's quaifying race or crew chief chat Sunday.
hi-mark/can you explain how nascar Q-rules i understand random draw but did thy change the top-35 rule & if thy did please explain it
They threw away the top-35 rule...so other than Daytona...they'll take the fastest 36...then add the next six highest in the owner standings and for the first five races this year that's based on last season...and then add either a past champion or a seventh provisional. A past champion who uses a past champion's provisional can not use it then for I believe the next six races they run before being eligible for it again.
Good to get back to racing! Hope the off season was enjoyable for you.. Doesn't look like any easier to pick a plate winner than in the past! Will the fact that Mikey W. is not in an MWR have a big negative impact on his chances? Is Jeff Burton a good choice under the new game format?
Michael Waltrip isn't driving a MWR car, but you had better believe he's got a TRD engine like the other MWR cars and a lot of technology was brought over to Swan Racing...He might be a sleeper..a lot depends on how well he runs tomorrow...For this race Burton is certainly worth some consideration because he was fifth and second last year at Daytona and tenth in both races at Talladega...Hoping he'll do well Sunday...gain a little bit in case I want to trade him at Phoenix where he was 13th last fall.
Great to have you and the SCC back Guru Garrow! How's this lineup for balance to start the year off?18, 20, 22, 27, 78
Zach I like the first three..but you lost me with Menard and Kurt Busch...I'm not sure how good Menard can work with this type of drafting and if there's any trouble it seems to reach out and touch Busch.
Just wanted to say hi. Where are your "Peeps"?
Part of the problem Steve is that it was not communicated to the SportsNation folks I was chatting today...but they'll be on it for Sunday..when we go "on the air" at 10:00 eastern.
Hey Mark, I had to do some digging to get the 'chat' link up.. not sure if there was a bug with that or not as I wasnt able to click on it through ESPN Fantasy Site directly like last year.
Suffering a few of the opening day blues Scott, but we'll have it all worked out for Sunday and for the rest of the season...Thanks for tuning in.
hi-mark welcome back/i was asking you abt 10-13 my 5h driver i think i solved my problem instead of 48-18-5-55-either 10 or 13 & trading out the 55 with the 1.8 cap leftover do you think this team is better 48-18-88-55-17 thn i would hve a cap leftover of 1.8 2 trade out with vickers whn martin does nt race/thank-you
I think that's a little better team John...Martin will run Daytona, Phoenix, and Vegas before sitting out Bristol.
Welcome back, Guru! Glad racing season is back. What kind of pre-season tips you would give to those of us playing the Yahoo game?
Not sure Leefus...I have looked at the A,B, and C categories..but I'd look to the veterans for Daytona and then we'll see how things shake out on the non-plate tracks.
Mark, hope you are well and the offseason was nice. Mine not so much w/me and the GF breaking up, oh well. Getting this done right before MBA class. Not filling out my lineup until after Thursday. But am thinking for a sleeper is Logano who looks like a solid price for a guy who I have high expectations for. Who are you leaning towards right now?
Nick..sorry for the break-up...I laid my dad to rest nine days ago so I've had better winters too...He's in a better place, though, and I'll join him one day...as for pre-Sunday chat team...prelim team made up of Kenseth, Stewart, Gordon, Harvick and Burton...I also agree Logano could be a real sleeper after finishing top-10 in both Daytona races last year and looked pretty calm and collected in the Sprint Unlimited.
Would Trevor Bayne (C driver) be a good pick for Daytona or was his win 2 years ago mostly a fluke?
Matt, I'm a fan of Trevor Bayne, but his win two years ago was a bit of a fluke back in the tandem racing days..He has a hard time staying out of trouble in the pack racing and hasn't done much at Daytona since then..Lack of experience is his biggest issue not lack of talent...Still might be a sleeper pick because that 21 is bad fast.
Sad to say, but this year I'll be at a convention working during the 500 and will miss watching or attending the race for the first time in over 20 years! A plate race and no mention of Dale Jr. yet?
Dale Jr. broke a motor in practice today...and that might be a good thing because his car hasn't quite had enough speed the whole time he's been down here. But I figure he'll get it figured out more tomorrow and still be some kind of a factor Sunday. At this point I don't think he's good enough to win...but is always at least a top-10 when it comes to plate tracks. Looking ahead to Phoenix..I'm not sure I'd want him there so that plays into my thinking here especially if he's not super competitive at this place.
I have heard Gordon should be successful this year because of the new car. What is the specific reason for this?
It's hard to say Mitch..these bad boys are going to be faster and more of a handful...it will play to some drivers and some it won't..It's going to be wait and see on Gordon I think in making that judgement until we get by first intermediate speedway race at Las Vegas.
Mark, so sorry about your Dad's passing. Thoughts and prayers with you and your family. With 3 of my grandparents up in heaven, he will have some good company and enjoy some sports talk up in heaven. Hang in there.
Appreciate that Nick...now go out and get a new GF that would even make your old GF proud..lol
Even though we're Christians and believe in a better life after death, losing a loved one is always difficult especially immediate family. God Bless you Mark, you and your family are in our prayers...
Thanks Dan...much appreciated..
You're welcome Mark. And I am making waves with a volleyball player that I am fond of. She is better looking than my ex too lol. One last question, what's up the Fords? They going to be ok Sunday? But alright got to get to class Mark, see you Sunday.
I think the Fords are lacking a little speed, but some people suspect they might because of the shape of their front bumpers might be able to do some tandem drafting the Chevy or Toyota drivers can't...that could be a game changer Sunday..will have to wait and see..and Sunday may turn into more of a handling race than horsepower if the temp is warm and track gets slick.
How do you think the new payouts will affect the start and parks at Daytona? Will they stay out longer trying to avoid the big one?
The payout is good enough at Daytona I don't think you'll see a start and park.
hi-mark can you give your top-30 daytona -500 thank-you

Who do you think is going to win the Budweiser Duels,Drive 4COPD 300 & the Daytona 500?
Chris...I'm sorry to say I'm just getting settled in here at Daytona and haven't had a chance to look over the Nationwide Series race yet. I just listed my pre-lim top-30 for the 500 so that will give you an idea as to what I'm thinking now..Thanks.
Should Roger Goodell be making $30 mil a year? What the heck?
No, but I think I should..lol
I don't know if you remember 19 years ago but What is the Name of the Nationwide Series Race that Shawna Robinson won the Pole for?
Wow...that race was the Busch Light 300 at Atlanta.
hi-mark are you entered in the group jayasks junkies like last year or are you in another group-thank-you
Jayski Junkies is my league John so yes I'm playing there and in one called Virginia Connection a league put together by an old friend of mine.
Wer you surprised that Danica Patrick won the Pole for the Daytona 500?
No in the sense she was really fast in winter testing and was the fastest in the last practice leading up to qualifying...It's a lot about the cars in qualifying, which Danica freely admitted, but she did everything she needed to do correctly and there was a lot of pressure because she had such a strong car..So she probably deserves a little more credit then she gave herself.
That will do it for today...but we'll be back at it Sunday morning at 10:00 eastern after chatting with the crew chiefs on race day for the Daytona 500...Be sure to join me then and tell your friends...Talk to you then!....The Guru has left the building!
