Greetings Fight Freaks. Nice boxing weekend ahead. I'll be in Washington DC tonight for the ESPN2 show headlined by the Peterson-Holt junior welterweight title fight. The studio is coming on the road and I will be part of it tonight. Also, Showtime card tomorrow with Bundrage-Smith plus overseas there's David Price vs. Tony Thompson in a heavyweight fight. And I also think some guy named Mayweather made some news this week. So read all the stories and blogs and check the schedule and rankings and let's get to it.
Danimal,Any good undercard fights for Peterson-Khan tonight in DC? I can't for the life of me find a full schedule/list of them to figure out what time I should show up.
Every fight is listed here: http://sports.espn.go.com/sports/boxing/news/story?page=boxing/schedule/index ESPN is on the air at 9 pm, but the undercard begins at 6 pm, according to the official schedule sent out to the media.
Hey Dan. In your opinion, what's the possibility of Floyd keeping his 30 month, 6 fight contract? Isn't he turning 36 this weekend? Obviously, Robert Guerrero is fight one but really FIVE more?
I do not believe there is any chance that Floyd will fight 6 times in 30 months. But it probably means he will be a little more active than he has been. I am hoping for two fights a year.
I think Paul Malignaggi will get problems with diego chaves if the fight happens.
How huge is it that Floyd left HBO?
It's huge from a business standpoint. For a boxing fan, the change is simply where you watch him and his younger fighters. So for some it will be weird not hearing Jim Lampley, for example, call the fights. Within the industry, it is a huge, huge deal.
Dan - have you been able to dig up any of the "confidential terms" in Mayweather's deal with Showtime? I'm curious to know some particulars.
I've heard a few things but nothing too detailed. I am told that he has an out after the first fight if he wants to leave or gets a better offer. Also, Showtime is putting up mega guarantees on the PPV -- north of $30 million a fight.
Is GBP going to make Ponce de Leon-Abner Mares for the spring? That has FOTY written all over it!!
Very, very good chance that will happen in April.
Are there any rumblings on the return of Antonio Demarco. I'd like to see him right back in the mix fighting the winner of Abril-Bogere, or any other top lightweiht aside from Adrien Broner for that matter.
My understanding is that HBO owes him a return fight after the loss to Broner.
is there a chance Lucas matthysse and Adrien Broner will meet in the near future?
Near future? I dont believe so. Eventually? Possible.
if donaire destroys rigo would he be worthy of number 1 p4p toyou
Has Canelo-Trout been signed?
Am I crazy for thinking a fight between Adrien Broner and Olusegun Ajose at 140 could be a shootout?
Definitely a solid fight.
Is the Dawson/Pascal fight off?
Yes. Pascal is fighting Bute instead.
With The Shpwtime Deal in Place, is there any hope that we could see a Flloyd fight on CBS at some point down the Line?
No chance. The only thing I could see would be for CBS to eventually replay one of his fights.
Dan do you think the fact that Floyd has just fought about 4-5 times in the last 4-5 years keeps him fresh despite him about to turn 36?
Maybe to some degree, yes.
Is Broner going to showtime too?
Anything is possible, but HBO wants to keep him and Richard Schaefer has said he wants to keep him on HBO.
Did you read the open letter Fres Oquendos manager put out to you? I thought it was incredibly stupid with all the name calling.
I saw it. Boxing has no barrier of entry for managers or promoters so any dope can try it out. Frankly, I never heard of the guy. I've been called worse.
Hey Dan, the new hbo intro is horrible, as soon as I saw the truck I thought to myself what's this? The old intro a few years back was perfect , they really ruined it.
I agree. The new one (as well as the one previous to it) is terrible. Ruined perfection. They should be worrying abou the fights they put on, not tinkering with something that was already the best there was. Change for change sake is not good.
Dan, How is that Donaire/Rigo are using USADA & VADA. Confused are both fighters being tested by Orgs?
As I understand it, Nonito is being tested by VADA as is Rigondeaux. Apparently, Rigondeaux will also be tested by USADA. I'm not even sure if I have that right. But Donaire's contract is for VADA, which is what he uses.
Dan, If Wlad retired tomorrow, would you have him in the top 10 all time heavyweights?
Very likely, yes.
D$ - do you ever talk with Al Haymon?
From time to time.
What possible fights do you see with Mayweather down the line? Canelo seems like an obvious choice, but who else warrants a shot with him
Obviously, Canelo, but Golden Boy is extremely deep at 140, 147 and 154. So if you look at the roster you're looking at guys like Garcia, Matthysse, Khan, Berto, Angulo, Canelo, Kirkland, Malignaggi, Alexander, K9, Peterson, etc... I think if Floyd beats Guerrero you can bank on one of those names being his next opponent.
Is there a stipulation in Mayweather's new contract that saus if he doesn't meet the six fights in 30 months, he has to pay some of the money he earned in previous fights back to Showtime?
I very much doubt that.
Dan, do you think the Trout-Canelo fight gets made? It didnt sound like Schaefer or Ellerbe were too excited for that fight to happen b/c it could potentially mess up a big money fight b/w Mayweather-Canelo.
I really dont know. I know Schaefer has been working on it but there are issues still.
Any word on a new date for Alexander-Brook? Haven't seen anything new lately.
Nothing yet but probably in April.
Great news about the salgado mendez 2 being picked up. Is there a chance this becomes the new norm at HBO?
I hope so. I hope HBO looks at what Showtime is doing with Showtime Extreme and follows the example, although I am hoping for an English language broadcast of prelim fight.
Dan everyone one has Canelo vs Mayweather next but what about Canelo vs Martinez will that ever happen?
Forget about Canelo-Martinez. Extremely unlikely.
How many more fights do you see Broner taking at 135 before moving to the talent rich 140lb division?
I think maybe 1 or 2 at the most.
Now that you and Floyd have the same nickname "Money", will you be hanging out at the big boy mansion?
You never know.
Am I the only one that wants to see a Rios vs Ortiz match still?
Probably not. I'd sure like to see that at some point, even though promotionally it is not a fight that can be made because of the GB/TR silliness.
Do you think a guy like Andre Ward has a chance for true crossover success? He doesn't play the villain at all, seems like he should get more love from casual fans.
Andre is a huge talent and a superb, p4p caliber fighter. I enjoy watching him fight and I like him personally. But will he cross over? That's tough because he is not a big personality like a Mayweather and his fights are not action packed. I'm not knocking him at all, just saying that to become that big crossover guy you need either a massive personality or a must-see style of fighting. He doesn't have either of those. What he does have is great talent.
HBO needs to send Rios and Alvarado a big thank you letter. That fight is the only reason I haven't canceled.
Tha crazy thing to me is that the fight is on Boxing After Dark and not World Championship Boxing. How is that not WCB-worthy?
Louis, Ali, Holmes, Foreman, Frazier, Holmes, Tyson, Holyfield, Lewis and Bowe are 10 guys who I think in their prime would beat a prime Vlad. Who on this list do you think Vlad would beat?
Based on size alone, Wlad would absolutely destroy guys like Louis and Frazier. It's different eras. Every one of those guys is a lot smaller than Wladimir.
How does Mayweather ditching HBO for Showtime affect the EPIX boxing market?
I dont follow. I dont thin it does other than the fact that it is now more likely that Epix will have the next Wladimir Klitschko fight rather than HBO since Wlad likely will go on May 4 and HBO wont go on the same day as the Floyd fight.
Dan,I know that the HBO telecast guys get put in bad spots sometimes and have to fill air... however their analysis last weekend was absolutely the worst of all time (at least since max compared Linares to SRL) no matter what they say Bika is not an elite fighter, he hasn't changed his style or improved in a obvious way. He is a good fighter with a good chin and is phyically strong....there is nothing elite about him. I can't believe they were trying to convince us all otherwise.
DTM, pretty good scrap while it lasted last weekend between Broner and Rees. From the comments last week I thought Rees was going to walk in the ring and fall down.
Having seen Rees many times, I figured he would let it all hang out and last a few rounds, which is what happened. He was just outgunned by a lot better fighter. But if matched right, I would love to see Rees again. He'll always be in a fun fight.
Crossroads fight for Holt tonight. He dose have the power to to it Peteron is pron to going down but can get up and out box you.I give the edge to Peterson but not by much
I agree with you. I can see it going either way. Holt is capable of knocking anyone out with one shot or being knocked out with one shot. Peterson has been down a few times. Both are good boxers too. I expect a nice fight tonight and look forward to it.
Any fight tonight your looking forward to besides main event?
There's a kid on the undercard, a super middleweight named Dominic Wade, who is from the area. He's something like 11-0. I was really high on him but he got in trouble and went to jail and has been out awhile. I'm looking forward to seeing him fight again. Very heavy handed.
Have they finalized on a venue for Bute-Pascal? There are rumors it may be at Olympic Stadium
Not yet. Olympic Stadium has shown interest, according to the promoters. Read this: http://espn.go.com/boxing/story/_/id/8960935/canadian-super-fight-jean-pascal-lucian-bute-agreed-to
If Epix picks up Klitschko May 4, where are you going to be?
Obviously, if Wlad fights May 4 I will be at the Mayweather fight.
Please make Wlad fight a real opponent. I really don't want to see the Pianeta fight and I doubt anyone else does.
Pianeta is as good as Jennings. Those were the two names.
When is Seth Mitchell-Johnathan Banks II been rescheduled for>
Not set yet.
are you updating boxing schedule today?
Great piece on Dr Jerry Buss, the forum fights were awesome gorwing up, to realize how many greats began careers their and how many great fighters fought there. RIP
Thanks. I used to watch those shows all the time. Monday nights on the old Prime Ticket sports network.
Mythically speaking, where would you be if Wlad fought his brother on May 4?
At the Klitschko fight.
Not that many care, where does Dawson go from here?
HBO will still give Gary Shaw and him a date, which they owe him based on the Ward deal. So he will probably just defend the 175 title against some other opponent this spring.
Hey Dan, Truth be told - Floyd left for Showtime after seeing the new HBO intro, right?
Pay the man, Shirley!!! Somebody suggested to me that the Mayweather was in the back of the ridiculous truck in the credits being driven over to Showtime.
So Broner wanted to hurry up and leave the post fight presser to have sex. So which happens first, him having yet another child or him moving up to 140?
Dan, Do you expect Price to walk right through Thompson?
Not sure walk though him, but I expect a Price victory.
WHAT'S WITH THE TRUCK????
That is exactly what Mrs. DTM said when she saw the opening.
What do you think about the Malik Scott/Glazkov fight tomorrow night? What are his chances getting the win?
I'd rather hang out with Fres Oquendo's manager than watch M**** S****.
Dan, I don't expect it to be a pretty fight to watch, but I think Ishe pulls off the small upset on K9. What's your pick for the wekend fights?
I think Ishe should win. He's younger, faster and fresher. But K9 carries power and Ishe has always disappointed in the big spots, which even he would admit. Maybe he puts it all together Saturday and wins. If I have to pick, I'll take Ishe on points.
Is the Love Child moving to Showtime??????
Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, the Love Child.
I miss that classic old HBO theme as much as anyone, but the piss-poor, bastardized current version of WCB doesn't even deserve that epic tune.
Watch this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=yu0gtTfXEpc
Am I the only person that think that Floyd's move to SHO doesn't hurt HBO all that much, any maybe helps them long-term? Its 1 thing if they had lost Floyd as he was entering his prime, but in my view, SHO just signed a 36 yr old fighter whos on the decline to a huge deal, and if he loses once, his value takes a huge hit, while HBO can focus on buildling up younger, exciting fighters into household names for cheaper
I dont disagree. Long term, it is not the worst thing ever. Some might look at it like the ARod deal the Yanks did. Good early and miserable late. Although it is only 30 months and Showtime is going to help itself a LOT in the short term. Look at it like this -- when Tyson left HBO for Showtime back in the day that was a monster shakeup. It helped Showtime a lot (early, before being stuck with a million horrible DK fights involving Fabrice Tiozzo, Frankie Liles, Keith Holmes, etc...) but while HBO might have been hurt early, ultimately HBO thrived. After Tyson, HBO poured resources into launching Boxing After Dark and brought a whole ton of smaller fighters into the mainstream, like Gatti, Barrera, Morales, Tapia, etc...
Is Bob Arum serious about competing with Floyd on Sept. 15 with Pac/JMM 5?
Who knows? I very much dount there will be a MAyweather fight and Pac-JMM 5 on the same day. Nobody is that stupid.
I know Jimmy Lennon Jr has introduced Floyd before. But if I'm correct he introduced Pretty boy not Money.
Correct. It was in his pre-Money days.
If Floyd looses what would that do to his deal with Showtime?
I dont know the exact terms but I would imagine it could terminate or greatly reduce the guarantees for the PPVs.
This whole Top Rank/HBO and Golden Boy/Mayweather/Showtime thing is really starting to remind me of WWF versus WCW. From fierce rivals to an all-out war for supremacy.
Don't worry HBO, losing your best guy is not a big deal...
Dan - Can you think of a worse main even on an HBO or Showtime Championship Boxing than K9/Ishe. I'm struggling to think of one more horrendous.
It's very bad, but the Lucas Matthysse-Mike Dallas main last month was worse.
What's up Dan? Any word on Jermain Taylor's next fight?
My main problem i see for Showtime in the long term is that they have never developed a mega star, I tend to think they aren't capable of doing so because HBO is the Kleenex of boxing in the US. HBO has helped develop every Blockbuster star in the US for the last 25 years or so. So when Floyd retires, Showtime is back to the same ol clear #2.....
I agree, Showtime has never developed its own PPV star. Tyson came from HBO. Chavez came from HBO. Mayweather is coming from HBO.
Does HBO counter by stealing Lateef Kayode away from showtime?
Pay the man, Shirley!
Showtime at least has the excuse of Mike Dallas being a late substitute.
All this talk about Showtime made me remember to ask: is Tarver done? Not with the network, but as a fighter?
I would say probably.
I honestly thought that the person who should be happiest about Mayweather going to Showtime is Adrien Broner. As the big up-and-coming star, doesn't he now hold most of the cards? Like HBO is going to let HIM go!
Gives Broner a lot of leverage.
I wanna get tix for Fury/ Cunningham, what do you think? Is Fury just hype or is this going to be a big show?
Unclear. That's why they are fighting fights like this.
DTM I read this the other day. Does Floyd moving to Showtime mean that HBO is less likely to cater to Al Haymon? In other words no more Keith Thurman!
Doubtful. Remember, Al still has Broner and many other fighters.
Any chance that Showtime can rent out HBO's commentating team for the night of May 4?
Does ESPN add to their usual budget for a show like tonights with Peterson and Holt? I remember hearing the budget usually is 35k for a FNF event, but with being a title fight and having two more known names one would figure the budget is increased, no?
Typiscal FNF license is around $50K. For tonight's show, the fee was increased. I am not sure of the exact number, but I am told around $70K.
Am I wrong to think that Rigondeaux does not seem particularly excited to fight Donaire?
I dont think he ever comes off as particularly excited about anything.
In all seriousness (and most freaks know Malik Scott's shortcomings), if Scott beats Glazkov, as a boxing pundit do you have to consider that he may be, if not the most exciting American prospect, possibly the "best" American heavyweight prospect?
No, I would not have that opinion. Glazkov is a good prospect but he is only 14-0 with his most notable fight coming against Tor Hamer.
Ticket info for May 4th yet?
I asked Schaefer about that yesterday and he said nothing is set yet. Soon come.
Hey dan, is floyd just going to take easy fights to end his career? and if so why should we watch?
A) I have no idea, although I dont consider Guerrero an "easy fight." He is about the best available guy Floyd could fight. B) I couldnt care less if you watch.
Any chance a Mayweather fight can land on CBS instead if PPV?
If you know anything about basic economics you wouldnt ask that. Silly, silly question.
D$, whats the deal with HBO always owing guys fights when they lose? just part of the cost of doing business? with HBOs leverage and platform shouldnt they have more power to say win and you come back, lose and go home?
That is one position. HBO often takes the point of view that if it helps close a deal for a fight they really want they will eat a comeback fight on the back end. It was a horrible move with the Dzinziruk fight and Martinez, for example, because there was nothing special about Dzinziruk facing Martinez and no public demand. They could have approved Szbik and not cost Sergio his alphabet title. So to give Dzinziruk a comeback fight was bad business. Giving DeMarco one to close the Broner fight is not bad. People WANTED to see Broner fight DeMarco. And DeMarco also makes good fights, so to bring DeMarco back against a solid guy at 135 or 140 is not a bad thing.
if Floyd fought with Larry how does he think he'll do with Jim Gray?
That could be fairly epic.
Does Showtime have any more shobox dates in the works after tonight?
any word if the Edwin Rodriquez fight in Europe will be televised here?
They are working on it. I expect in some form or fashion that card will air in the US.
Do you think Amir Khan would drop to 140 for a fight with Broner?
Khan is at 140. But I dont see it. Khan has a contract with Showtime and Broner is still on HBO at this point. Plus, it's not a good fight Khan. Bad, bad style match for him.
Looking forward to the May-Ghost 360 shows, I think the 360 shows were better than the latest 24/7's
They are now All Access shows on Showtime. The 360 brand has been retired from what Stephen Espinoza tells me.
Am I the only one that thinks the FNF card is better than Showtimes? Well done ESPN....
It is. I dont say that in a biased manner because I work for ESPN. It is simply very obvious, that ESPN has the far superior main event this weekend.
Who would be favored in a Canelo Trout Match up by the bookies? Trout had arguably less trout with Cotto than Mayweather, would he be favored?
I'm not a bookie.
Will they be showing the Terrell Guasha fight on Sho Extreme?
No, there is no Extreme coverage this weekend.
Any chance we will see Demarco vs Linares 2 this year?
Dont know but at this point that fight means nothing.
Do you think Guerrero can give Floyd trouble the way Hatton did for a few rounds?
I think Guerrero is a more skilled fighter with a better chin. I think he can give Floyd trouble all night long.
Did you hear Skip Bayless give you a shoutout on First Take? What are your thoughts on Stephen A. Smith constantly stating Pacquiao is at fault for failing to take $40 million for the Pacquiao/Mayweather fight.
Didnt know that Skip did that. In what context? As for Stephen A., he and I have had this discussion. I totally disagree with him. Stephen A. does not understand the boxing business.
Here's my blog with a little of this and a little of that: http://espn.go.com/blog/dan-rafael/post/_/id/3220/salgado-mendez-ii-gets-u-s-tv-slot
You do not understand the boxing buisness! How did you get this job. You are the worst - you make me sick to my stomach and you give boxing a bad name!!!
Mike, do you need a hug? Freaks, give Mikey a hug. Somebody is having a bad day.
Here's a new blog on the upcoming Epix quadrupleheader: http://espn.go.com/blog/dan-rafael/post/_/id/3235/epix-plans-quadrupleheader
Dan did you see the Guerrero-Salido fight? Steroids aside, I don't understand how he lost to a natural featherweight who is not hard to hit but manhandled Berto, has he improved alot since then?
I was at that fight. Robert was very, very young and the other guy was juiced up.
Mikey won't like it, he hates EVERYTHING!
Mikey you are a moron and need a smack on the head.
What's up with Gary Russell? Dude NEVER fights and is insanely talented. Bad management team?
Gary fights March 2 in Las Vegas. His manager is Al Haymon.
Dan, what are your top 3 fantasy match ups for Floyd with active fighters. Regardless of promotors, real possibility, etc.
If there was no politics or BS and Floyd was willing to take the fights, I would love to see him fight, in no order, Canelo, Sergio Martinez and for history's sake, even though it is waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay less interesting now, Pacquiao.
Mikey, Im here for you
I'm looking forward to Brian Kenny interviewing Floyd once again.
That is one aspect of the Showtime deal that could make for good fun.
bayless bascallly used your article about guerrero as juice to say flloyd might lose, since ya know, he obv never actually saw the dude fight.
Following up on your answer, Stephen A. was dismissing Guerrero's chances and his comments about Floyd. Skip suggested that all Floyd fans read your article about Guerrero and how ready he is.
Skip wins that debate with Stephen A.
I think the WBC just named Mikey the mandatory for the Dan v Karma fight announced last weekend
How about Floyd - JMM. It is an entirely different JMM than the one he fought.
Bute/Pascal should've happened years ago, but unlike Floyd/Pac we'll take it now...better than nothing. I favor Pascal...will DTM be coming back to Canada? And who do you favor?
I agree. Pascal-Bute is about a year too late, but it's still sorta interesting because both guys are diminished. I think it will be a fun fight. Sometimes I dont have a strong view of a fight or I see it going either way or whatever. On this one, I think Pascal is a big, big favorite.
Ran into Harold Lederman and his wife the other day in the supermarket. It was awesome to talk boxing with him for a couple of minutes. He couldn't have been a nicer guy. A true gentleman in the sport. His love of the sport shines through in conversing with him.
Harold is a great guy and ALWAYS enjoys talking boxing.
What are the chances of an afternoon lead in fight on CBS for May 4?
I would say pretty damn good.
PS Dawson and Shaw can cry all they want, but they need to realize they bring NOTHING to the table except a worthless trinket. Bute and Pascal are stars who, you know, actually have fans!
First off, Dawson is THE light heavyweight champion. He is the lineal champion and his title is more than a trinket. Second, they come with a contractual guarantee for another fight from HBO.
If Ross Greenburg is forced out of HBO for losing Pacquiao for one fight, do you see Ken Hershman on his way out? It seems like the network has had some tough time since Hershman took over.
It's a fair question. I do not know the viewpoint of Ken's bosses. I will say this though -- when Pacquiao and Top Rank left HBO for the one fight in 2011, one of the things that really hurt Ross with his bosses was the fact that they were out of the loop. They were not informed that Pacquiao was going south until it was too late to save the day and keep him at HBO. So the bosses were blindsided. That crushed Ross. With Ken, Mayweather may be gone -- and not for one fight, but basically the rest of his career (unless he opts out after fight 1, which I am told is his option) -- but the HBO bosses knew all along this was possible. They were not blindsided by Mayweather's defection. Ultimately, from what I am told, Ken's bosses supported the decision of the offer HBO made and not including insane PPV guarantees like Showtime did. Still, losing the No. 1 fighter and attraction in the sport cannot help Ken. It's not good.
What happened to Anthony Peterson being on the undercard tonight?
He's not on it.
Any word on whether or not Broner got to have sex after his fight last week?
I didnt ask.
DTM - Who do you think would win in a Geale-Golovkin matchup? These are, in my opinion, the two best middleweights after Sergio.
I'd love to see it. I would lean to Golovkin but let's make it happen!
Golovkin should be ripped for fighting Ishida - I can think of at least 10 other fighters more deserving of a title shot.
It's a stay busy fight for a guy who will probably fight 4 times this year. It's small money without any major US TV. I have no problem with it.
Broner's ring entrance. Horribly horrendous
That was bad and it was embarassing that HBO showed that crap to a national audience. How many N-words were dropped? I lost count. Pathetic.
Nice job on behalf of Epix to show 4 fights. With Vasquez in the main event might need the insurance of the other fights. His fights are brutal.
Agreed, Vazquez does not fight in the best style. But it's a notable fight, should be a great crowd and Burns is enjoyable to watch. The undercards have a good chance to be very solid too. Overall, it should be a good show. I do hope Vazquez comes to fight or that Burns can force him to fight.
Too much shake up this past yr w hbo, lost manny steward, Larry Merchant, Floyd! n now the opening music again!!! smh
Give GGG a break on the Ishida fight - the dude is gonna fight four times this year (possibly following Donaire's path to FOY). We'd give him crap if he was only fighting twice, so let him have one stay-busy outing.
People complain top fighters don't fight enough. Then when one of them does, Golovkin, people complain that he doesn't fight all top 10 guys. Can't win either way...
Boxing fans in general are NEVER satisfied.
You mentioned that CBS showing a Mayweather fight makes no sense economically. Could you elaborate? Is it simply that even with a huge pre-fight marketing campaign they cannot generate enough ad sales to cover the PPV income?
Is it possible Showtime sent Hershman to HBO to sabotage their business? If so, he nailed it.
Beibut Shumenov vs Sergey Kovalev on NBCSN? Anyone? Anyone?
Earler this week, Max Kellerman was on the Dan Lebetard show and said that if Floyd is ever going to fight Broner, it has to be within the next 18 months. Otherwise you're looking at a 38 year old Floyd fighting Broner just as Broner is entering his prime.
Max is on point.
With Chad Dawson losing Pascal as a dance partner what is next for him? How about Kovalev or Shumenov? Any interest for the networks?
I'd be quite happy if Dawson's next fight was against either of those guys.
Dan, chances that Tyson Fury vs. David Price happens in the next year?
I dont think it will happen unless one of them has a world title.
Robert Guerrero desreves this shot he earned it
Dan, this year marks 40 years of HBO WCB (first fight Foreman vs. Frazier 1). Have you heard anything about a second volume of Legendary Nights in the works from HBO, or is it more likely they wait until the 50 year mark?
Have heard no real discussion about more Legendary Nights eps but the 40th anniversary of the first HBO fight was last month.
I see Orlando Cruz is the highest ranked contender for Mikey Garcia's belt. Is that a legit ranking or is the WBO trying to cash in the Gay Boxer publicity angle?
It's not legit but I dont think it has anything to do with Cruz being gay. I think it has to do with the WBO having rankings that suck as bad as the wretched WBC.
Can we Dance?
Say the word.
Hershman landed HBO the epic Hopkins/Cloud Lt Heavyweight title fight. ratings gold.
As much as many people hate the fight and as much as HBO is spending on it, it likely will do a very good rating.
Is it better to take Metro to the Armory? What's parking like?
It's on the Metro line but there is also ample parking as it is next to RFK stadium. I am going to drive.
Is Ricky Burns a bigger draw in the UK than Adrien Broner is in the US?
Burns is a bigger ticket seller but Broner garners more TV viewers.
Dan, I don't dislike Ishe, but how in the world does he even deserve a title shot on HBO?
1. He doesn't based solely on his resume. 2. It's on Showtime.
Dan, let's wrap this chat up soon - I need to go have some sex
Pay the man, Shirley!
Dan, do you give Guerrero a Ghost of a chance?
Hey, Dan. Can you explain why only HBO and Showtime are in the PPV game? Why isn't ESPN, or some of the major networks also engaged? Seems to me that ESPN/ABC could be huge players and would have the more natural audience to market to.
That is something I have often thought about. I am not privy to the business decisions of ESPN'2 upper management but it is no secret that if ESPN got behind something, it could swallow up any category in sports, PPV boxing being one example. For whatever reason, ESPN has never gotten seriously involved in it. I do not know why not.
DTM do you ever got irritated by the disrespect "act" that some fighters constantly put on - like Broner, pretending to not know his opponent's name - stuff like that?
Usually not because I know they're hyping up their event. It's part of the show.
Dan, ignore the imposter that posted previously under my name. I, and only I, will announce when the Freaks can dance. And NOW is the time in the chat when we DANCE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Any word on Chavez Jr. hearing the Nevada State Athletic Commission?
Later this month.
How many times u get asked about Guerrero Chances? lol
I hope Frankie Pianetta does get the Klitschko fight. Not sure if the freaks know this but he had to take a year off for skin cancer a couple years ago. Good to see him work his way back up to the top of the ladder...
He hasnt exactly "earned" this fight. Good that he is healthy, but his resume is pretty weak.
Going back to if Showtime has produce a big star or not. If I'm not mistaken, I believe I saw Ricky Hatton fights way before he moved to HBO.Pretty sure he isn't the only one.
Ricky fought his first US TV fights on Showtime but was basically unknown here until his deal with HBO. But I dont even count that because he didnt fight on either US net until he was well established in the UK.
Is Donaire v. Rigondeaux set in stone? That is a very interesting matchup.
Yes, signed. Fight was announced at a press conference yesterday. Here's my story on the fight: http://espn.go.com/new-york/story/_/id/8965078/nonito-donaire-guillermo-rigondeaux-unification-fight-set-april-13
Please check out my story on Guerrero, who spoke to the media yesterday about the fight with Floyd: http://espn.go.com/boxing/story/_/id/8973478/robert-guerrero-says-floyd-mayweather-jr-ripe-picking
Dan, it was great that ESPN showed Pacquiao-Marquez a few weeks ago. I was able to get some non boxing friends to watch and they loved it. Are there plans to do more rebroadcasting of HBO PPVs?
That is part of the deal ESPN and HBO PPV have so, yes, when there is an HBO PPV, ESPN has the rights to replay it several weeks later.
Showtime's new policy of trying to attract the top level talent seems to have really hurt their ShoBox brand.
Cant disagree. ShoBox seems to have become an afterthought, which is unfortunate, because it's been a really good platform for a long time.
D-Money, we are heading to the armory for the fights tonight. Have you caught fights there before? How do rear floor level seats compare to lower level raised seats?
I have been to fights there but not for many years.
I read that Guerrero read Mayweather's tweet about Devon Alexander. Guerrero said when he saw that tweet he was worried he was going to lose out on the fight. So was Floyd just playing games?
Obviously. As far as I am told, Devon was never in the picture.
DTM, any chance Showtime and ESPN enter into a similar arrangement as ESPN and HBO have?
I dont believe so. My understanding is that the HBO PPV-ESPN deal precludes ESPN from doing something similar with Showtime.
Now HBO stands for "Have Broner Only"!
Ken Hershman is probably wondering "Where was all this money at when I was running Showtime?"
Any chance CBS/Showtime picks up Larry Merchant for some analysis or other contributions leading up to Mayweather v. Ghost? It just doesn't seem right to have a Mayweather fight without Larry Merchant involved somehow :(
Larry still has certain contractual obligations to HBO and is not permitted to appear on Showtime.
HBO and Showtime swapped bosses? Can you clear this up for me?
Not that complicated. HBO forced Ross Greenburg to resign and then hired Ken Hershman away from Showtime. Showtime then hired Stephen Espinoza, a former Golden Boy lawyer, to run its sports division.
Dan, has Bute vs Pascal been confirmed to you by a source at HBO or is that an educated guess on your part ? If true then this is huge news for boxing in Quebec ... it's been talked about non-stop all week in the media.
Where you been? Read this. Should it up for you. http://espn.go.com/boxing/story/_/id/8960935/canadian-super-fight-jean-pascal-lucian-bute-agreed-to
Is Vitali Klitschko officially retired? Is a matchup with Haye toe-tally dead at this point?
He has not yet officially retired.
It sure seems like Espinoza is still on as a Golden Boy employee
That is a common comment.
Do you think Wladimir will ever have a major fight in the USA before he retires? I would love to go to one his fights without traveling to Germany
It's possible but it will all depend on if an opponent emerges who makes sense to fight in the US. To fight in the US, he probably needs a good American opponent.
Is it me or Is Showtimes quality standards going down hill? Harry Joe Yougey in an undercard, Ishe Smith in a main event, really?
Hey Dan, any word on how many tickets have been sold for tonight? Last time Peterson fought in DC he drew 10,000, but I don't expect any where near that many tonight.
Organizers told me about 4,500, which, to me, would be a disappointment.
Thinking about taking the drive to Radio City Music Hall for the fight. Did you go to the Roy fight there? Any word on how the venue is? The cheapo seats any good?
Not sure how that venue sets up for boxing. I was not at the Jones fight there, that was before my time on the boxing beat.
Do you get the sense (win or lose), that March 9 will be BHOP's final fight? Seemingly nothing to prove, and the 175 weight class isn't particularly great
Really hard to say. If BHop loses cleanly, I would hope he steps away. But if he wins, I cannot see a man of his competitive nature just walking away with a title when he can make another seven-figure payday doing what he likes to do.
Is the 3/2 Showtime headliner really Abril vs Bogere, why do I have the feeling that it was supposed to be another fight, did somebody bow out or something?
Yes it is. Ponce De Leon-Velez was supposed to headline but Velez got injured.
Best Jim Gray interview quote..."Do not be rude to me" Kostya Tszyu
That was prett classic.
Dan, did Top Rank ever any type of response to Golden Boy's $3 million offer for Donaire/Mares? It seemed like a tremendous offer for Donaire and Top Rank.
No, they said no.
Dan, fight you are most looking forward to that is now scheduled?
Rios-Alvarado 2 and Mayweather-Guerrero.
How excited are you to hear Mauro Ranallo SCREAM and SHOUT at every one of Mayweather's subtle defensive moves?
I AM NOT EXCITED ABOUT THAT!!!!!!!!!!!!
What is next for Cotto? Is he done as a big time fighter?
Cotto is supposed to be back in the fall.
Dan I with you 100% on the Klitschkos. Its time to stop the hating on Wlad this guy was left for dead turned his career around sure he wasn't beating Ali or Lewis but he has lost fewer rounds then any other fighter besides Floyd And Ward in the last 7yrs easy
% of Trout Canelo happening
Schaefer just answered an email from me and said he is making very good progress today.
Dan, you keep saying Vlad would Destroy Louis and Frazier but he is so risk averse he couldn't even destroy Haye, what makes you think he would take the risks to destroy those guys?
Yeah, he didnt destroy Haye, just won 12-0 and had him begging for point deductions and flopping on the ground. OK.
Haven't heard much from 50 cent lately. What's up with him and his promotional company?
He has Billy Dib in a featherweight title defense on ESPN2 next Friday.
Dan, Rios-Alvarado II isn't WCB worthy because Al Haymon represents neither, and it isn't a total mismatch. Duh. Do your homework, man.
I wish I could get that Wlad/Haye fight out of my head....but as I remember it Haye ran away the entire fight. It's hard to knock a guy out when he's running away.
Dan. Now that Pacman is coming off a KO loss. I wonder if he wishes he would have accepted Floyd's 40 mill offer when he had the chance.
I doubt it and it was the right decision not to accept that deal.
Since Edwin Rodriguez and GGG are fighting on the same card, does that mean we may see them fighting soon?
It's possible down the road.
Where does brushing Adrien Broner's hair rank on your bucket list?
I have to check. I think around 14th.
If Pacquiao HAD accepted that $40 million, do you think the fight even happens? Just struck me as posturing, not a real offer.
There was no way Manny and TR was ever going to accept a buyout so it was not a legitimate offer.
Mickey Bey kind of flying under the radar. Don't think a doctor note or tainted meat getting him out of this one.
Dont think so. 30-1???? Was he drinkig the stuff?
How likely do you think it is that Canelo does end up fighting Trout on May 4th?
Schaefer says they are getting there. We shall see.
What's with ESPN changing the P4P rankings? Who ranked Floyd 4th, he should be banned?
Thanks for chatting Fight Freaks. Hope you enjoy the boxing weekend and make sure to check out tonight's excellent Friday Night Fights card. I am looking forward to being on tonight's show. Talk to you next week. Peace.
