Chat with Sean Adams

Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)

Who will be the new Texas players replacing the players who are in the 2013 NFL draft?

Sean Adams
  (12:09 PM)

Vacarro will probably be replaced by Quandre Diggs who will move from corner to safety. Alex Okafor will be replaced by a number of players, but I think Reggie Wilson will be one of the ends with Jackson Jeffcoat. Moore will be replaced by a number of guys in the front four and without disrespecting him, there will not be a drop off at DT.

James (Houston)

Who's more on the hot seat, if at all: Mack Brown or Rick Barnes?

Sean Adams
  (12:11 PM)

Mack Brown, because football matters more than anything else. Rick Barnes will be able to blame this year on youth for the on-the-court issues.

Jake (Houston)

Which freshman will provide the largest impact in the fall?

Sean Adams
  (12:18 PM)

I'll go with the easy answer and go with the offensive line. I like Desmond Harrison, and while he has some work to do, he can move into the rotation rather quickly. While he is not a freshmen, he is part of the 213 class and is new. Freshman would be Antwuan Davis.

Gary (The Woodlands)

Sean!!! What's up?! Hey, is it just me or does Gray look like a a pro RB in only his soph. year? The guy has the build and style of an NFL back and is still so young! Very impressive.

Sean Adams
  (12:23 PM)

He is very impressive. Experience will help him with his pad level this coming year, and I expect him to have a huge year.

Gary (The Woodlands)

Sean, I found that i just could not help but be impressed by the sheer size of Swoopes! Brought back memories of Vince Young. Granted it is only one day of practice, but in watching was his "inexperience" pretty evident or did he seem uncharacteristically put together?

Sean Adams
  (12:28 PM)

He is huge guy and really athletic. Trent Dilfer told us at HornsNation that he just needs time and growth. He played at a small school and needs some soakage in the college experience. I would shy away from comparisons to VY because he's on of my favorite players ever (with Tommy Frazier), but Swoopes has shot to be really good.

Bobby (Lafayette,LA)

Why do you think the reason is that Texas is so far behind on hiring recruiting personel for the program and is it a direct reflection on the program's misses on players recently?

Sean Adams
  (12:32 PM)

A lot of folks have ben slow to react to the new rules. When people are adding full-time employees that are not replacements, there is a lot of red tape to manage at an educational institution. While they think they are progressive, universities are slow because there is always someone willing to get in the way of athletics. Some schools (Alabama) have less red tape. Winning thee out of four BCS Championships will do that.

Ryan (Colorado City, TX)

Why does everyone seem to forget about Santos? Watching the games last year, he seemed to be better than Edmond.

Sean Adams
  (12:35 PM)

And he could even be better after losing 20 pounds. I really want to see both guys in the middle get better at shedding blocks. They both got caught up in the wash in the Alamo Bowl, and I can't stress enough how bad Oregon State was.

Jared (Austin)

Player you're most excited to see this spring?

Sean Adams
  (12:38 PM)

Peter Jinkens at the LB spot. He is athletic, tough, strong and comes to the ball with bad intentions. And the LB position needs help.

Hectora (new mexico)

Will Texas be the best team in the Big 12 next season?

Sean Adams
  (12:41 PM)

I'm scared to death to answer this question, but yes, they will be. One to 85, they are better than everyone else in the conference. Between the ears is where they have to get better in the offseason.

John (South Austin)

Is there a chance we see a position change with Jalen Overstreet similar to Mykelle Thompson? I don't see much room for him to get snaps with Ash, Brewer and Swoopes.

Sean Adams
  (12:44 PM)

Slow down, we are not sure that Overstreet will not be more ready than Brewer and Swoopes. I want to see him practice, but Overstreet has a great skill set.

Derrin (Plano, TX)

How depressing/disappointing is it for Texas fans that Kruger and the Sooners have a better chance to make the tournament than the Barnes-led Horns?

Sean Adams
  (12:50 PM)

Honestly, I think the fans are apathetic to the Longhorns right now. I think 2013-14 will be the year of pressure on Barnes.

Frank (Waco)

Any explanation for basically the whole athletic apartment underachieving so much the past couple of years? Besides volleyball it seems like they've all been just average or below average the past couple of years.

Sean Adams
  (12:54 PM)

Yeah, it has been a tough spell. No athletic department is all bad at one time, but Texas is pretty average across the board. Success sometimes breeds contentment, and folks lose the pressure to win. I don't know if that is the reason, but that is one of the theories.

Will (Odessa)

If Jinkens plays up to his potential this year, who's a former player you would compare him to?

Sean Adams
  (12:58 PM)

That's a tough one to compare. But he is a shorter version of Derrick Johnson and could prove to be more athletic. Who knows if he will be as good, but he has tools.

Cleveland (Hutto)

Do you see Swoops with a redshirt, and either way do you see Overstreet or him seriously competing for the starting job, or more of a complimentary "wild horn" QB?

Sean Adams
  (1:02 PM)

I'm not a huge fan of "wildhorn" QBs, but I see the latter. Swoopes will redshirt unless the staff is crazy, and Overstreet could end up being the second-best QB on the roster.

Jared (Chicago)

Nobody is talking about Bryant Jackson as a No. 3 WR, but he caught some key balls last year and outplayed all the freshman. What do you think his chances of emerging as a real threat this year are?

Sean Adams
  (1:04 PM)

True. He made the move from the defensive side of the ball and did make some big plays. I think most people just want to see more. There is a need for a stretch-the-field, blow-the-top-off-the-defense kind of receiver, and he will be in the mix.

Matt (Bryan)

Is it just me, or does Jake Raulerson seem to be more of a possible D-line prospect as opposed to an O-lineman? He reminds me a lot of Brian Robison. What is your take on Jake?

Sean Adams
  (1:06 PM)

I love the kid, first and foremost. Give me 85 of him. I like him on the OL, because that is where a need is right now, but he can play either.

Jared (Chicago)

What do you make of Greenlea, Hutchins, and Porter on the OL? Do they have any chance at becoming part of the rotation or will the freshmen all jump ahead of them on the depth chart?

Sean Adams
  (1:08 PM)

I think the freshmen have a shot to be really good, and it would not surprise me at all if a couple of them moved into the rotation early.

Sean Adams
  (1:08 PM)

Thanks for all of the good questions. I'm ready for spring practice and will be back next week.
