Chat with Pat Yasinskas

Pat Yasinskas
  (12:54 PM)

Let's kick this chat off a little early.

Kasy (Hattiesburg, Ms)

Do you think the Bucs will try to find a CB in free agency again or will they stick to the draft due to the failure of Wright? The draft is loaded with CB talent.

Pat Yasinskas
  (12:55 PM)

Think you could see them get CBs in both the draft and free agency. They need more than one CB.

JM (Charlotte)

Hey Pat. Are you going to put together your own NFC South Mock draft?

Pat Yasinskas
  (12:56 PM)

I'm sure we'll do the usual Blog Network mock as the draft gets closer and I'll do all the NFC South picks.

Ryan (St Petersburg, FL)

So looks like Turner's days are numbered. Does Atlanta go and get a top FA like Reggie Bush (if he doesn't resign)? Or do they pick up someone in the 2nd or 3rd round of the draft and hope he can produce? Going to be hard to find a starting RB with a pretty weak FA class and draft class

Pat Yasinskas
  (12:57 PM)

As I've been saying, I think they can find a RB any time from the second round on. You can get good RBs in the middle of the draft. They don't need a superstar, just someone to share time with Jacquizz Roddgers.

Michael (St.Pete)

The Bucs have said they want to bring in someone to push Josh Freeman. I am kind of confused by that. I know Freeman has been up and down the last few years, but I really don't think Josh is the type of guy to not give it his all in any way, practice, durring a game, etc. Durring the lockout, he organized the workouts for the team etc. I can't see his struggles being for any other reason than a few bad games. Or he has reached his ceiling. Otherwise, its a commitment issue, and thats one issue Josh Freeman does not seem to have.

Pat Yasinskas
  (12:58 PM)

Check out Schiano's comments from yesterday. He kind of clarified his thoughts on Josh.

MJ (Palm Beach, FL)

Pat,With the unfortunate circumstances of Bowers mistake, does it now almost guarantee Bennett will be a Buc whether it be the franchise tag or a long-term deal? Also, does this scenario help us create a brotherly family reunion in Tampa?

Pat Yasinskas
  (12:59 PM)

I think they already had planned to make a hard push to re-sign Bennett. And, yes, it could help put his brother in Tampa Bay.

matt (tupelo)

Have the saints filled all the coaching positions yet?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:00 PM)

I believe they're all set after hiring new RBs coach and moving Ingalls to o-line coach.

Nicolas (Parkland, FL)

Would the Bucs make a trade for Darrelle Revis? They have a major need at cornerback and have the draft picks and cap room to make a trade?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:01 PM)

Wouldn't totally surprise me. They certainly have need at CB. And, like you said, they have the resources to pull of something like this.

matt (tupelo)

Ive read two different articles so far from nfl and pro football weekly basicly tearing up bushrod what do you think?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:02 PM)

He's not as bad as some people make him out to be. But, no, he's not a superstar LT. I'd put him somewhere slightly above average.

Ryan Lee (Charlotte nc)

Pat you are keep repeating that Chris Gamble is the Panthers best cornerback you must have forgot that in the last 2 years Chris Gamble was not able to stay healthy.

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:03 PM)

True, but he's still their best CB.

Kasy (Hattiesburg, Ms)

Is there any reason the Bucs wouldn't bring back Miller? He wouldn't bring a premium price and clearly compliments McCoy. Do you think he will hit free agency?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:03 PM)

I suspect they'll do what it takes to re-sign him.

Mathey (Huntsville,AL)

What are the chances that the falcons release Turner and draft Eddie Lacy

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:04 PM)

Think it's a foregone conclusion that Turner will be gone. But I don't think they need to draft Lacy. They can get a decent RB a little later in the draft.

JM (Charlotte)

When all is said and done, do you think the Panthers release DWill, Ron Edwards, and Gamble?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:04 PM)

Yes, on all counts.

Eric (Atlanta)

Will the Falcons save money on Matt Ryan by virtue of not going to or winning the Super Bowl? Will Flacco really get 20M? And what do you think Ryan will get?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:06 PM)

No, I don't think that will lower Ryan's price. He was 10 yards away from the Super Bowl. He's good and he's just entering his prime. I expect him to end up being one of the highest-paid QBs.

Darin (Louisville, Ky)

I heard the Bucs have started extension talks with Bennett... U think the chances are good?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:07 PM)

Yes, I do. There was a report that they're scheduled to meet with his agent later today. Not saying they'll reach a deal today, but it's a good sign that they're working on it.

Corey (D.C.)

Combine question: Why is virtually every single player smaller than they were listed in college? What is the point of that when you know official measurements will prove embelishments?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:07 PM)

It's kind of always been that way. Think the colleges are the ones that embellish those matters.

Ricky (Houston, Tx) [via mobile]

The saints are obviously planning on bringing in some help for our secondary after releasing J. Patrick. Is it more lilely for us to move Jenkins out to CB and go after a safety in the draft or keep jenkins where he's at and go after a CB in the FA market or draft?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:08 PM)

Think they'll keep Jenkins at safety and pick up a CB.

Eric (Charlotte nc)

Pat is their any chances that instead of cutting Chris Gamble and Dwill that the Panthers will be able to trade both of them and get some decent value in return for them.

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:10 PM)

Might be able to get something in a trade for Williams. But not Gamble. He's not young, he's coming off injury and the rest of the NFL knows Panthers are going to release him. So why give up a draft pick when you might be able to sign him without giving up a draft pick?

Ryan Lee (Charlotte nc)

Pat how many years do you think it will take the Panthers to get out cap problem?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:11 PM)

At least not until next year and maybe not until 2015.

Darin (Louisville, Kyq)

Hey Pat with Bowers Probably going to jail or prison... Does Bucs offseason needs change at all?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:12 PM)

Think Bucs obviously will cover themselves with some added depth at DE. But let's wait to see how the Bowers thing plays out.

Eric (Atlanta)

Freeney to Falcons? Or are we switching to 3-4?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:13 PM)

Wouldn't totally surprise me, especially if he's willing to sign for low money.

Mike (Atl)

Do you think there comes a point where Smitty and Dimitrof set a deadline fore Tony? They have to know what they have headed into the draft

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:13 PM)

I think the unofficial deadline is March 12, when the league year starts. They need to know by then.

Larry M (Athens)

Will the Tide fans please stop with the Eddie Lacy to the Falcons gibberish? Serious question: even if Gonzalez comes back, if one of the top two TE (the Stanford and ND guys) are there when they pick, do the Falcons take him? There will be no 'franchise' DE available where the Falcons pick. Why not take the TE of the future there? Even if Gonzalez comes back, it is more likely than not that 2013 will be his last year.

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:14 PM)

I think they'd have to consider either of those two TEs even if Tony comes back.

JM (Charlotte)

Other than DWill, Edwards, and Gamble, who else do you see getting released? Do you think Beason becomes a cap casualty as well?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:15 PM)

Nakamura and maybe James Anderson. Beason could be released, but I think a restructure is more likely.

mike (greensboro)

when should we expect to see some moves by the Panthers?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:15 PM)

Closer to March 12. Not just by the Panthers, but all teams.

Steve A (Ventura, CA)

Hey Pat. Love the blog. Why is everyone writing about how bad the Saints secondary is? Despite their struggles, any solid defensive unit will struggle if you give your opposing QB all day to throw without any pressure. Seems to me if the Saints fix thier DL to create some pressure up front, they would be much improved. Thoughts?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:16 PM)

It would certainly help if they had more of a pass rush. But still think they need to get better at DB.

Rich (Monroe(NC))

Pat, with the Panthers likely to cut Gamble do you think CB is now more of a pirority to draft for instead of DT since that position is so deep in this draft?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:17 PM)

Think both are important and it will come down to what's available in the middle of the first round.

Cory (Sandpoint, ID) [via mobile]

Any chance the falcons let Sam Baker leave and go after Jake Long?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:18 PM)

Maybe, Falcons always are good for one or two big moves per offseason. That said, I think it's more likely they re-sign Baker.

Kasy (Hattiesburg, Ms)

Any idea what compensation the Jets want for Revis? Just asking for conjecture. I have heard anything from 2 first rounders to a second and a fourth.

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:19 PM)

Haven't heard anything real strong on that, but I'd guess at something closer to the latter.

Daniel (Augusta, GA) [via mobile]

Hey Pat, not a football question, but I'm curious to know why you think that playing pro football is a bigger accomplishment than competing in the Olympics?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:21 PM)

Where did I say that??? Assuming you're probably referring to the Margus Hunt story I did. Don't think I said that or anything close to that. They're both huge accomplishments.

Steve A (Ventura, CA)

Given the Saints tight cap situation, what are the chances they offload Pierre Thomas in either a trade or just plain release him? I mean, I love the guy, but the Saints don't really need him. This would also make room for Ivory to get some playing time at a very cheap contract, and save about $4 million against the cap?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:21 PM)

Could see a trade. Think he has some decent value.

Mike (greensboro)

Pat beside cutting players and reworking deals do you expect the Panthers to make any moves in free agency.

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:22 PM)

Only very minor ones. They're not going to have the cap room to do anything major.

boy (atl)

pat, any words out there for d freeney to the falcons

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:22 PM)

Only from Roddy White!

Christian (Greenville, SC)

So if the Panthers release Gamble, does that make CB their top priority in the draft in your opinion?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:23 PM)

Like I said, either CB or DT.

mike (greensboro)

Pat......Gettleman said they will take "best player" in draft. not ness position needs

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:25 PM)

Every GM always says that.

Nick (Greenville,nc)

Seems panthers will take a dt do you like Floyd or Richardson more?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:26 PM)

Floyd, but they're both good.

Steve A (Ventura, CA)

I think Micky Loomis is getting a bit soft since returning from his suspension. Its obvious that Jonathan Vilma and Will Smith are overpaid and underachieving. Both of them will not fit in a 3-4 defense, so why don't the Saints just outright release them and move on?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:26 PM)

Wait and see. I think that still could happen.

Boy (atl)

Pat you mean Arthur Blank who has hacked into Roddy White Twitter and posted that he want the Falcons to go after Freeney ?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:26 PM)

Good one!

Yogi (Alaska)

Which Saints RB leads the team in carries next season?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:27 PM)

I think they'll finally start using Ingram more.

Daniel (Augusta, GA) [via mobile]

a?Hunt will be going to the National Football League in 2013, which may be an even more amazing accomplishment than if he had gone to the Olympics.a? I'm just curious about your rationale, that's all.

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:28 PM)

Amazing in that the guy never played football until he got to college. Come on, you're making it out to be something it wasn't. Wasn't trying to sell the Olympics short in any way.

Eric (Atlanta)

Your best guess. Which CB is the odd man out? Grimes, DRob, Asante, McClain?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:30 PM)

McClain's not going anywhere and I don't think Asante is either. Think it comes down to Grimes and Robinson and probably will be decided by if Grimes can get bigger money elsewhere.

boy (atl)

pat, this is wat i will suggest for t dimitroff and coach mike smith. draft a cb in the 1st round because we need young legs in that position or defensive takle because the falcons were horoble againts the run last season.

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:32 PM)

That's a little different from what most people are speculating on. But I think your logic makes sense. I wouldn't rule out either one.

Brendan (K-Vegas, NC) [via mobile]

Pat, why does it only free up 7.9 million towards the cap if the Panthers release Gamble when he is scheduled to make more than 10 million?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:32 PM)

Because there still is $3 million remaining in pro-rated money that they'd have to take the hit for.

Greg (Charlotte)

Alright, I've read a lot from some sources that the Panthers can save money by releasing Williams and I've read in other places that the Panthers wouldn't save any cap room and would just have to spread hit out over two years. Who do I believe and how likely is it that DeAngelo is out?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:33 PM)

They'd have to designate him as a June 1 release and spread it over two years to free up cap room this year.

Darin (Louisville, Ky)

Gotch ya. Just curious why didnt the Bucs go after Monte Kiffen when he was available? Seemed like the D was good when he was there...

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:34 PM)

Not sure Schiano wanted him. Schiano likes a different kind of defense.

Greg (Tampa)

Any chance the Bucs make a play for Percy Harvin or Wes Welker? NE owes us a favor...

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:35 PM)

I could see Welker before Harvin.

Steve A (Ventura, CA)

Just throwing this out there as a huge Saints fan here. I think hiring Rob Ryan as D-coordinator is a great move. If the Saints D can rank anywhere near where Dallas' D has been the last year or two, and our offense does what they do, we'll be alright. I don't think Saints fans say it enough, but Rob Ryan is a great hire.

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:36 PM)

I think it was a good hire. Could turn out to be great. We'll see.

Daniel (Augusta, GA) [via mobile]

Sorry, Pat. Didn't mean to make sth out of the Olympics question, just wanted to hear the opinion of a sports writer. Ok football question: what happens if a team can't get under the cap before deadline? Has that been the case before?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:38 PM)

I don't think it's ever happened before simply because teams know for months that they have to get down to it. I'm sure NFL would penalize a team in some way if it didn't get under the cap.

Steve (CLT)

how close do you really think Carolina is to contending for the NFC South title? before you laugh, think about this - they swept the Saints, split with ATL, and lost 2 close games to TB. You can argue they could've gone 0-6 if the ball did not bounce in their favor, but then again, perhaps they would've been 6-0 if things fell right...

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:38 PM)

There's plenty of talent on that roster, even if they have to release some guys. It's possible they could turn things around quickly.

Mike (Atl)

How much effect will Matt Ryan's probable extension keep the Falcons from going after big time FAs this offseason?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:39 PM)

Wouldn't hurt in the short term because a Ryan extension probably would free up cap space for this year. But could be an issue in the longer term.

Nick (Greenville,nc)

Contracts aside Williams or injury prone Stewart better?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:40 PM)

I've always thought Williams was better.

Corey (D.C.)

Do you really have a button that allows you to block all questions from a particular poster if you so chose?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:40 PM)

Not that I'm aware of. But we do have moderators that might have that power.

Ryan (NJ)

Sooo there is like a 9278347234 to 1 shot Atlanta moves to LA right?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:41 PM)

Might be even higher than that.

mike (greensboro)

are you hearing anything on how Gettleman and Rivera are working together? good? indifferent?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:42 PM)

Sounds all good. People in the building, including the personnel people that worked under Hurney and stayed, seem to have a positive early impression of Gettleman.

John (Long Beach, CA)

Hey Pat is it possible to restructure the contract of Gamble? Despite Gamble not consistantly being healthy for an entire season the pass two years. He's the best CB the Panthers have. Or do you think it's just better to let him go and just rebuild via the draft? If so who is a likely candidate that would fall into the Panthers laps.

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:44 PM)

Only way it would make sense for Gamble to restructure would be if he takes a big pay cut. He still has some market value. Might be best to just part ways now.

Paul (Chapel Hill)

Do the Panthers think Lafell has potential to takeover as #1 receiver down the line?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:45 PM)

Not sure he's a No. 1. But think he's a decent No. 2.

Corey (D.C)

Hi moderators are the Falcons moving to LA?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:46 PM)

Falcons aren't going anywhere.

Corey (greensboro)

Pat I was wondering why are keep hearing of Panthers moving to LA. But yet we don't hear anything about the Bucs moving to LA when the Bucs are not able to sellout games.

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:47 PM)

Bucs aren't looking for a new stadium or renovations -- at least not yet. That's when LA stuff always surfaces.

boy (atl)

pat, since you didn't agree with me on that, wat do you thing the falcons should draft in the 1st round

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:49 PM)

I don't disagree with you. I think your suggestions make some sense and I could see them happening. But I think a lot of Falcons do in draft depends on what happens with Gonzalez, Moore, Baker and Grimes.

Nick (Greenville nc)

I'd like see Tolbert use more as a rb instead of fb. What u think? Also will panthers resign one of the tight ends?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:49 PM)

If DeAngelo leaves, then you'll probably get your wish.

JM (Charlotte)

Having watched Cam for two years now, what is your take on him? Does he have a chance to be elite, or should we expect him to be a little better than average?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:50 PM)

Has a chance to be elite.

Eric (Atlanta)

Thanks for answering my question earlier. Back to a part of it that didn't get answered. Are Falcons switching to a 3-4. Nolan is known for it. What would the personnel issues be in doing that? I guess we'd need an NT and at least one OLB and one ILB. Wouldn't that be harder than just signing Freeney?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:53 PM)

I don't think they have any plans of changing to 3-4 as their base. May include some more 3-4 looks, but they don't have the personnel to do it on a regular basis.

Gray Hairs (Atlanta)

Chances of D. Williams to the Falcons, 29 but low miles?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:53 PM)

Not in a trade. Can't see Panthers letting him go to division rival.

JD (LA)

Will Devery be back with the Saints?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:54 PM)

I'd say doubtful.

Nick (Greenville,nc)

Are you going to Indy for combine?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:54 PM)

No, we split up those assignments. I got the Super Bowl. The folks that didn't go to Super Bowl got the combine.

shane (chester, va)

hey pat did you see that ridiculous article about a rumor about the bears being interested in trading for steve smith? i cant remember the last time i laughed that hard lol

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:55 PM)

Didn't see it. Where was it?

Kasy (Hattiesburg, Ms)

Does the great Ronde Barber hang up his cleats this offseason?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:56 PM)

Don't know, but I expect we'll hear Ronde's decision before March 12.

Rich (Monroe, NC)

Thanks Pat for all your work have a great weekend.

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:57 PM)

Thanks to all of you for stopping by. Have a great weekend.
