Chat with Myron Medcalf

Myron Medcalf
  (2:01 PM)

Hello all .... Thanks for joining me

Carl (connecticut)

Hi Myron, Why is everyone so down on Villanova I know thees questionable losses but they have 3 Monster wins against Syracuse, Louisville, Marquette.

Myron Medcalf
  (2:03 PM)

Carl, I think you answered your own question. Those questionable losses make Nova a difficult team to assess right now. But you can't deny those quality wins. On their best day, Nova can play with anyone. On its worst day, it can lose to Columbia. Let's see which version of this team arrives in March Madness.

David (Missouri)

Chances Arkansas makes the NCAA?

Myron Medcalf
  (2:04 PM)

Slim. That whipping against Missouri didn't help the Razorbacks' cause. I think they're on the wrong side of the bubble. But .... I think they're one of about six SEC squads that could make a run in Nashville next week during the SEC tourney.

Matt (New York )

What do you think UNC's ceiling is ?

Myron Medcalf
  (2:06 PM)

The smaller lineup seems to work now. I think James M. McAdoo is comfortable with it. They can run the floor well. They'll have some defensive issues against bigger teams (see matchup with Duke on Saturday) but they have more shooters on the floor and Roy Williams has his best athletes on the floor, too. I think UNC could win a few games in the NCAA tournament. Not sure they're capable of anything beyond that.

Joel (Andover)

do you think the national media gives Bill Self his due for winning 8 (soon to be 9) conference champtionships in a row? It seems as if this was Coach K, Calhoun, or Boeheim, this would be a much bigger deal.

Myron Medcalf
  (2:08 PM)

Yes, Self gets a lot of credit for his continued dominance in the Big 12. Probably not enough for some KU fans, though.

Pearson Harper (Hillsborough, NC)

With Ryan Kelly back, has Duke now regained itself as a legitimate championship contender?

Myron Medcalf
  (2:09 PM)

Yes, I think Duke is legit national title contender. Kelly changes things on offense and defense for this crew. He can stretch the floor in ways that most forwards at this level cannot. Duke's defense is still a concern, even with Kelly. I'm very interested to see how they match up with UNC's smaller, quicker crew on Saturday. But I could certainly see Duke reaching Atlanta.

Joshua (Bailey,NC)

Myron, After the lost to Georgia last night does Kentucky now have to win the SEC tourney?

Myron Medcalf
  (2:11 PM)

Not necessarily. Now .. that loss certainly hurts. But a win over Florida Saturday would neutralize it, IMO. I'm not saying it gets them in. But a W over Florida plus a win or two in the SEC tourney might be enough. But last night wasn't good for anyone involved with that program.

Kelly (Tuscaloosa,AL)

Myron, my favorite time of the year is here. I think the conference tourneys and then of course the Big Dance will be wild. Which conference tourneys are you most looking forward to besides Big Ten? I think plenty are intriguing

Myron Medcalf
  (2:13 PM)

Well, I'll be in Chitown for the Big Ten. So I'm definitely excited for that one. But I think the SEC tourney will include the most drama. I mean ... that entire league is on the bubble. Seems like every squad in that conference is playing for a potential at-large slot. And I think there are at least five teams that could win that tournament, too.

Rick (Louisiana)

Is Michael Snaer the greatest clutch player in ACC history?

Myron Medcalf
  (2:15 PM)

Haha. I don't know about history. There was this dude named Michael Jordan who may have hit a game-winner in a national title game when he was a freshman. But he's certainly clutch. ... I interviewed Snaer last summer. I'd never talked to a college player who possessed his confidence. He's definitely talented. And he doesn't panic with the game on the line.

Paul (Memphis)

Myron, should Jordan Mcrae be SEC POY?

Myron Medcalf
  (2:17 PM)

I just had this conversation with my editor the other night. Here's the thing. In the SEC, you could probably give it to five or six guys. It's tough to give the award to a Florida guy because the Gators are so balanced. But Pressey, Releford, Marshall Henderson, Caldwell-Pope and McRae are in the convo. I'd have no issue with McRae getting the honor, especially with the way Tennessee has finished the season. He's been unstoppable in recent weeks. And clutch.

Zach (London)

Are you going to be as mad as me if Butler-Vcu series only lasts one season?

Myron Medcalf
  (2:18 PM)

Nah. With realignment, change is expected.

C.J. (San Francisco)

Most dangerous likely 8/9 seed team, in terms of likelihood of knocking off a 1 seed in the 2nd round?

Myron Medcalf
  (2:20 PM)

I wouldn't want to play Creighton. And ... I know firsthand that Minnesota is arguably America's most unpredictable team. But when the Gophers are rolling, they're tough.

Joe (Hammond, IN)

Myron,Fighting Irish, my sleeper Final Four pick....no chance?

Myron Medcalf
  (2:21 PM)

Oooh ... I like that one, Joe. Not my sleeper. But I get it. Really diverse offense. Tough veteran inside with Cooley. Solid backcourt. Only question is how will they defend long, athletic teams in the Big Dance.

Mike (St. Louis)

How do you feel about the SLU Billikens making a run to the Final Four this year?

Myron Medcalf
  (2:25 PM)

The Billikens are dangerous. They're one of the top defensive units in the country. Jim Crews has done a great job with this group. I think SLU can make a run to Atlanta. ... My one question about them. The Billikens hit these cold streaks and they're ugly. And they don't really have the 3-ball as a weapon to close gaps when they need it. What happens in that scenario? When they're down and they're facing a team that's successfully running the floor against them? ... Still, I'm not mad at ya if you pick them to reach Atlanta.

JOSHUA (WORK)

WHICH SEC TEAMS DO YOU THINK SNEAK IN OFF THAT BUBBLE?

Myron Medcalf
  (2:26 PM)

Who makes it? .... Florida, Mizzou (IN) .... By Selection Sunday? Tennessee, Kentucky (Wildcats beat Florida Saturday, win an SEC tourney game or two) ... The rest miss the cut.

Myron Medcalf
  (2:26 PM)

Who makes it? .... Florida, Mizzou (IN) .... By Selection Sunday? Tennessee, Kentucky (Wildcats beat Florida Saturday, win an SEC tourney game or two) ... The rest miss the cut.

Mike Brey (South Bend, IN)

How many OTs tomorrow baby?

Myron Medcalf
  (2:26 PM)

12!!!!

Tim (Austin, Tx.)

UNC's smalls vs. Duke with Ryan Kelly- who do you think has the advantage? UNC's momentum is strong but good gaurd play is key in the dance and Brice Johnson isn't that great yet.

Myron Medcalf
  (2:28 PM)

Well, Miami was too big and slow to contend with Duke. Gamble, Kadji and Johnson couldn't handle the inside-outside attack of Kelly and Plumlee. So Miami was always a step slow when it rotated. UNC won't have that problem. Tar Heels don't have the size but I think Tar Heels will keep a hand in Kelly's face. Canes didn't/couldn't do that. But Kelly has improved inside, too. Not sure what happens if Duke plays big for 40 minutes. If they pound it, UNC might be in trouble.

Chas (Ames, IA)

Iowa is 19-11 (8-9) with a home game against Nebraska tomorrow. Assuming it beats Nebraska, how many games does it have to win to make the tourney?

Myron Medcalf
  (2:31 PM)

I'm not even sure we can have this convo unless Iowa is playing next Saturday against a top-5 BT school. A lot of work before they're "in." But Hawkeyes in the mix for sure. And I think they can make a run in Chicago. Wins? Three more.

Jonathan (Pittsburgh)

If St. Louis Wins the A-10 Title, Crews should be the no doubt Coach of the Year. Thoughts?

Myron Medcalf
  (2:32 PM)

He's been my national coach of the year for a few weeks now. I don't even care if they win the A10. He stepped into a very difficult situation. He starts the year without Kwamain Mitchell. And now, they're on top of a tough league. He should win it. Crews for national coach of the year. Tell your friends.

Ben (Phoenix)

How far do you see Arizona going in the tournament?

Myron Medcalf
  (2:34 PM)

No idea, Ben. When Wildcats are rolling, they're good. But they haven't looked like a team that might make a run in weeks. Sean Miller's young frontcourt gets younger by the day, it seems. Arizona is committing turnovers on 19.6 pct of its possessions (144th in the country per Ken Pomeroy). That's a problem, especially in March. I won't be surprised if Wildcats don't make it through the first weekend.

Brad (Fort Knox, KY)

What can Gonzaga improve on in your opinion?

Myron Medcalf
  (2:38 PM)

Its schedule. The only thing holding the Zags back is the fact that it's played in the lukewarm WCC for the last two month. But the Zags knocked off ever quality team in the Big 12 (other than Kansas) during the nonconference season. You all know I'm a Pomeroy guy. Zags are top-25 in adjusted defensive efficiency, offensive efficiency and offensive rebounding rate. They're deep. And you tell me how your favorite squad is going to guard Kelly Olynyk? I think the Zags are well-rounded. Don't have many weaknesses.

Gina (LA)

Who is the best team in the West?

Myron Medcalf
  (2:40 PM)

Gonzaga is No. 1. I think UCLA is the other team I like on the West Coast. Oregon, Arizona, Saint Mary's ... tough to assess those schools but they're intriguing and certainly in the mix. Cal, too. The West Coast could represent in the Big Dance. Might lead to a new Snoop Dogg song. I'm hopeful.

Kimber (KC, MO)

What kind of real advantage, if any, do you think KU's seniors give them in making it to the Final Four or beyond?

Myron Medcalf
  (2:42 PM)

Experience helps. And I think it's a factor for KU because they know what it takes to make a run. And they know what to expect once the tourney begins. I can admit, folks in my profession are not always easy to deal with in March. We're in your face ... same question a million times ... scrutinizing every movement ... How will teams perform under that? Guys like Ben McLemore are in a better position because of veterans like Withey and Releford. So it helps. But it doesn't guarantee anything.

Joe (St. Louis)

Laurence Bowers. Two straight 23-10 games.. Tell your friends? Looks fully healthy now.

Myron Medcalf
  (2:43 PM)

He's improving. But it's not like he faced two teams that were really equipped to stop him. ... That dude Jarnell Stokes? That's another story. Can't wait to see that matchup this weekend.

Myron Medcalf
  (2:43 PM)

He's improving. But it's not like he faced two teams that were really equipped to stop him. ... That dude Jarnell Stokes? That's another story. Can't wait to see that matchup this weekend.

JEFF (ATLANTA)

CAROLINA OR DUKEWHO YOU PICKING?

Myron Medcalf
  (2:44 PM)

All of my weekend picks can be found here: ... http://espn.go.com/blog/collegebasketballnation/post/_/id/78604/myron-medcalfs-10-weekend-predictions-5

Jim (Vegas)

Myron, completely agree with Gonzaga best team in the West. But you seem to have completely forgotten the Mountain West conference teeams. UNM and UNLV are both better than Cal, Oregon, etc. Right?

Myron Medcalf
  (2:46 PM)

Jim ... good catch. Too much 90s hip-hop in my system. When I hear "West," I automatically think Cali. But you're 100 percent correct. New Mexico is my No. 2. I really like the way the Lobos have ended the regular season. Such a balanced team. And Alex Kirk is on my "Everybody Will Want His Autograph in 2 Weeks" squad. I think he'll shine in the Big Dance. UNLV is legit, too.

Ned (Boston)

Hi Myron who is a sleeper team that could pull off a couple of upsets in the ACC tournament?

Myron Medcalf
  (2:48 PM)

It's interesting because ... based on nonconference resumes ... they may have won the Big 12. Big Ten has a bunch of average teams, too. Some very good ones, of course. But Zags would be competitive in the Big Ten.

Myron Medcalf
  (2:49 PM)

Does America realize that the Zags have a 7-footer who's shooting 80 percent from the FT line and 38 percent from the arc? He can play inside, too. Whatcha gonna do when Kelly Olynyk comes for you, brother [Hulk Hogan voice]?

Sean (Chicago)

I'm really surprised that ESPN would choose to go with an article that suggests Duke could lose in the first round. It is possible, of course, but you guys are blaming this years team for the failure last year. I don't think that's responsible journalism. And if were talking about the most likely to be upset, isn't Gonzaga the inherently obvious choice?

Myron Medcalf
  (2:51 PM)

I have no idea what you're talking about. Haven't read that. And ... it's called opinion. This entire chat is about opinion. We don't know what will happen in March Madness. But we're willing to make educated guesses. Nothing wrong with that. That what makes this fun and unpredictable.

john (virginia)

which mid-major player will make noise in the ncaa tournament? i like muscala from bucknell

Myron Medcalf
  (2:52 PM)

The Muscala Monster. .. .Yeah. He's dangerous. An All-American. Ask Mizzou.

Aaron (Porltand, OR)

was your answer to Ned (Boston) the right one? confused.

Myron Medcalf
  (2:54 PM)

I guess not. Sometimes this system gets goofy. I was referring to a question about Gonzaga but I guess it didn't go through. ... Ned asked about ACC tourney sleepers. .... My only one would be Va and NC State. Seems like a five-team battle with Duke, Miami and UNC on top.

Tom (Washington DC)

Hi Myron, what Big East team do you see as the best in the country and being dangerous in the tourny? Also, I'm a Georgetown fan. What you think of them?

Myron Medcalf
  (2:56 PM)

I think Louisville is playing the best basketball. I picked Louisville to win the national title before the season began. And I still feel OK about that. But I love Georgetown's ceiling. George Gervin (Otto Porter Jr.) and that defense ... great combo. I think both could reach Atlanta.

Leah (Indy)

Please answer, Im in class and paying more attention to this!!Is there any threat to Indiana not getting to play in the Midwest bracket and play in Indy? Who do you think will be the overall #1 seed?

Myron Medcalf
  (2:58 PM)

No guarantee if they lose Sunday and drop an early game in the BTT. The fight for No. 1 slots is brutal right now. If Hoosiers win Sunday, I think we'll see them in Indy. I think the Zags will get it because I don't think they'll lose another game. Can't say that about about the other No. 1s.

Steven (Boston)

None power 6 conference team who can make a final four run?

Myron Medcalf
  (3:00 PM)

Saint Louis, VCU, Gonzaga, New Mexico, UNLV

Myron Medcalf
  (3:02 PM)

So I didn't get to everyone and I apologize. But that's difficult to do when you're fielding hundreds and hundreds of questions (literally). I do want to thank you for your time. Please, please, please ... If I missed you, come find me. ... Not at my house or anything. But via Twitter (@MedcalfByESPN) or via email (mmedcalf3030@gmail.com). ... It's been real. Have a great weekend. Enjoy the games.
