We'll get started in a second here.
Hey Jake, (same name...sweet). How do you think the Qb battle will turn out in Norman. Do you believe Kendal Thompson has a shot at winning the spot, or is it locked in for the Belldozer?
Great name, Jake. I think Thompson's chances are slim, but Bell far from has it locked up. Keep an eye on Trevor Knight, who I will be profiling in a story on Wednesday on SoonerNation.
Jake I really enjoy the "IN" articles. Definitely worth the $$$$. I hope you, Bob, Brandon, and Dane keep up the good work.
Any idea why Stacy McGee didn't participate in combine drills today?
Saw that, and I do not. Assume he has some kind of nagging injury that he didn't want to sprint on.
Do you think the hiring of Montgomery and Bedenbaugh will attract more of the 4 and 5 star guys OU is accustomed to landing?
That is what Bob Stoops is banking on. Monty and BB were hired for their recruiting prowess above all. Not only are they prolific in developing relationships, they are tireless on the trail. Montgomery was calling the best of the best DL prospects 1 day after taking the OU job to talk to them about OU.
True or false: had the MAC not busted the BCS, Shipp, Patton, and Kittle would still be OU employees.
Fascinating question. Be curious to see what you guys think about it.
What's your take on the Montgomery hire?
Great hire. You can always tell if a hire is good on whether the opposing fan base is bummed out. Michigan fans were bummed out when the Montgomery news started to leak. I mean, really bummed out.
Any possibility of Dionte Savage moving to DT to fit a possible change to a 3-4 scheme? That's a big space-eater right there...
They recruited him to play OG. Not sure he'd be thrilled about switching positions when he committed to OU to play G.
Will Kruger & the Boys run the table and punch a return ticket to the Big Dance?
Think that ticket has already been punched.
Jake, when do you see OU making it official with Montgomery?
Likely before the end of the day.
Hey Jake. Thanks for chatting! Any news on rumors of who OU & Stoops want for the final coaching vacancy? Is it going to be another strong recruiter?
Two names that have been thrown out there for the FB/TE coach: Jamie Christian (Houston) and Derek Lewis (Florida). Christian famously talked WR Deontay Greenberry into decommitting with Notre Dame and signing with Houston. Lewis has strong recruiting ties to Louisiana, where he's from. Whoever Stoops brings in, I expect that person to have a strong recruiting background. Clearly Stoops is trying to upgrade OU on the trail.
Any further word on the kids that were kicked off the team?
Not much else to say. Damon Williams was never going to play here; Marquis Anderson was suspended almost all of last season; Gary Simon has been in hot water for awhile, and was an academic risk coming in to begin with. Simon had a chance to start, but I really like the freshman CB they're bringing in from Tulsa, Stanvon Taylor.
Jake: Are the Sooners likely to try and develop a more balanced run and pass attack next season. And, if so, who are the likely players to take the roles?
I think they would like to, but Heupel has been prone to passing over running, so we'll see. The personnel will be largely the same, minus the QB.
What is the status of the health of OL like Tyler Evans and Adam Shead? Assuming they're back healthy, shouldn't this be one of our best lines in years?
I said that last July, and then Habern gave up football and Evans and Kasitati got hurt. Evans is expected to be a limited participant in spring ball. Same with Kasitati. So that's good. Shead has some back issues, but he's been able to work out, so that's positive, too. If this line can finally stay healthy, it can potentially be very good.
Kind of glad the MAC busted the BCS now.
My own opinion is that I really, really, really want to believe that the regime at OU is process-oriented. But a BCS berth against Florida that resulted in even a competitive loss would have tasted a lot better than the way things really ended. So my honest opinion is that the success of Northern Illinois probably cost those three their jobs.......
Does the hiring of Bill Bedenbaugh and Jerry Montgomery change your opinion about next season at all?
Not really. Still not a national title contender. Players win games, and I don't think OU has the players to match up with the upper-echelon SEC teams.
Which in-coming freshmen do you see getting a lot of playing time this year?
Definitely the DBs, Taylor, Byrd, Thomas; possibly DEs Ward and Dimon; maybe one of the freshmen WRs and possibly RB Keith Ford.
Clear up an issue for me. I hear OU only has one true starter on D returning, then i read it is 4.
Chuka, Nelson, Colvin, Lynn. That's the 4.
Are there concerns in Norman about switching to a 3-4 when so few linebackers were used last year and no true LB were brought in the last few years?
And what about the fact that only 3 DTs are on the roster (you need 3 DTs to run a traditional 3-4)? All kinds of problems with a potential move to a 3-4.
Who is the Starting Quarterback for Oklahoma in 2013?
Probably Bell, possibly Knight.
Will you be on site covering any spring practices or other?
I read Lunardi's picks today. Why does he think Ole Miss gets in before UK? UK has a head to head win, a better RPI, and no disgusting losses to South Carolina. I am biased, I admit, but I am right too.
Are you on the right chat?
I agree, if they aren't upset by Texas Wednesday Night. Otherwise, they Sooners could find themselves on the bubble.
Yeah, they can't have multiple bad losses, but 3-1 down the stretch with a win in the Big 12 tournament should be more than enough.
Will they be televising the Red/white game
Actually made this inquiry last week. They say they haven't made the decision yet, but how many gymnastics reruns can the Sooner Network really show?
I expect it to be on TV.
Jake, thanks for the great articles and chats. What do you think it will look like with the front seven if we do go to a 3-4. Is that even slightly sustainable with our current roster? Do you think it has a a good potential upside as a scheme for us?
Nate, I think it has a chance to be good down the line. The personnel isn't really there, though, at the moment. OU has only one ILB on the entire roster, and only 3 DTs. That said, you'd probably be looking at a lineup of Wade, Phillips and Russell on the line, and Chuka, Nelson, Shannon and Grissom at LB.
Kenny Stills showcased his speed yesterday at the combine? Where do most experts project him to be drafted?
Yeah, really good time for him. I could see him being a third rounder.
Jake, why a 3-4? Can you say a bit about what a 3-4 opens up for a defense? What are it's strengths and weaknesses as a defensive scheme?
The 3-4, in theory, puts more speed on the field. But it opens you up to being overmatched on the line. OU was overmatched with 4 down linemen last year, so you can imagine what might happen with 3.
Jake, I read the article on Deandre Clark, I think he is a must get for OU. I realize its unrealistic to get everyone everytime, but its a huge blow if he ends up at LSU
I don't think Clark is make or break, necessarily. His brother is going to OSU, and Deondre has indicated that he'd like to go somewhere out of state. So we'll see. Steven Parker and Justice Hansen are bigger instate gets, with both being OU fans. Losing them would hurt.
How do you feel about the new line coaches? Being top recruiters is great and has been missing for sure. As good at coaching as recruiters?
I've heard good things about both as coaches. Michigan has gradually gotten better defensively, and Tavon Austin ran for 900 yards against the Sooners behind the WV offensive line.
The big 12 has gone from the 2nd best conference to maybe the 4th best conference in recent years. How long can OU survive as a national contender within a conference with 1 marquee game with Texas?
Eh, OU has marquee games lined up with Notre Dame, Tennessee, Ohio State, LSU and Nebraska every year from now until 2022. The Bedlam game has gotten more run with OSU emerging into a Top 20 program. The Big 12 brand has been diminished for sure, but OU is doing its part in the scheduling department.
Excited to see the QB battle this year, anyway Cody Thomas turns some heads this season, or is starting as a true freshman at OU just never going to happen at the QB position?
Never say never, but...
It only seemed like 900 (I was at the game)
Me too. Seemed like 1,000.
Thanks for answering my other questions.....Assuming all the recruits qualify etc, How many Frosh will be starting on D?
Taylor, Thomas and Byrd are really the three that are realistic. Maybe DJ Ward if he was just unbelievable this spring. If I had to guess, I'd say two.
Do you think the improvement this season will help the Sooners land Randle or Frazier?
Randle nixed OU from his list.
Seen on the Big XII chat that West Virginia is asking the conf for traveling money. Do you think this is a sign of early doubts from them? Will they stick w us or leave if opportunity knocks?
Think they stick. Think they also found out that the travel is a nightmare for them. But they'll make it work. WV not going to the Big Ten or ACC.
Jake, thanks for the chat. I assume regardless of the starting QB, the depth at offensive gaurd/tackle will allow the offense to run a jumbo scheme like the 49ers? Offense has huge upside with the right scheme and all the studs on the o-line and in the backfield.
Sounds good, except the OC prefers to spread it out when he can. Don't see him changing his style much, either.
Jake, as we've seen this offseason with the staff shakeup which I found surprising given Stoops being known as overly loyal to coaches, is it safe to say Stoops feels the fire under him and knows he needs to change the direction of the program? Given its rapid decline as of late...
Wouldn't call the decline rapid. I mean, OU won 10 games the last two years. But yeah, this is Stoops' way of saying things haven't been good enough. It will be interesting to see what he says when that question is posed to him in the next press conference.
Jake, i think things are relative. OU is supposedly down. OSU is supposedly up. I don't really believe the latter, therefore, maybe the former isn't true either? At least, that's what i'm hoping.
OSU is up, but they still lost to OU last year. The two schools came from very different starting points.
Seems like a lot is riding on Jordan Phillip's potential to be a stud this year. Odds that he pans out and is a force for the D this year?
You're right, they're counting on him a lot. Depends on your definition of "pans out." That he comes an All-Big 12 DT in 2013? 5-10%. That he becomes a solid starter, ala Casey Walker? 75%.
do you think we can get any 5 star players in the next class?
Hey Jake, what's the latest on Quincy Russel? Is he going to make it to Norman?
I think so. He's been awfully quiet lately, which has raised eye brows. Sure that was one of Montgomery's first calls.
any word on a OT'S moving to DT?
Who are the guys that red shirted last year that you expect to make an impact this year?
Alex Ross, Derrick Woods, Jordan Wade, Eric Striker, Zack Sanchez and possibly Trevor Knight are all guys that could contribute.
Is it wrong to feel glad that LJ, Stills, Wort, etc have moved on? I cant help but feel like this turnover of players may be exactly what the Sooners need to get out of their funk.
I indirectly addressed this theme in today's story. Fresh starts across the board should help re-energize the program.
Does Lane Johnson roll into the top 10 in April's Draft?
Asking a lot, but it's definitely possible. See him as more of a mid first round pick. But who knows? He dominated the senior bowl and the combine.
When I look at the 4 and 5 star Prospects that OU is recruiting I always see Tigerdigest and other top school's periodicals writing stories about the recruits. Rarely, if at all, do i see anything from OU's recruiting news agency. Are there more plans to do this type of "featuring"? Do you think it might help OU in recruiting?
We're not here to help OU recruiting. We're here to cover it.
Has anyone seen Landy run the 40? One of the goofiest things I have ever seen.
Haha, looked like a slow-motion version of Forest Gump.
What is your impression of Tim Kish? Could his head be the next to roll if improvements aren't made on that side of the ball?
Kish is Mike Stoops' guy, so he's got a much larger rope.
what r the chances of 2 thousand yard rushers?
.07% OU didn't have even 1 last year.
Happy Monday JakeSo many questions, so little time. OU has hire two new coaches. Thoughts on these two?
Bedenbaugh and Montgomery are two prolific recruiters, who have been very active for the Sooners already. OU wants to get in on the guys Alabama, Florida and Ohio State have been getting in the trenches. Obvious the Sooners don't measure up right now. Bedenabugh and Montgomery gives them a chance to get back to that talent level.
With the oklahoma football program at the lowest level in Stoops career when is someone, the AD or the media, going to call him out personally and not let him hide behind the success in a conference that is equally at its lowest level & falling further behind the sec?
Someone get Stewart a milkshake or something.
What happens first?OU wins a National Championship in football, OU makes the Final Four, or Thunder win the NBA Championship?
Thunder wins an NBA title.
What do you think of Landry Jones as an NFL QB?
Depends where he ends up. In a really horrible QB situation like Arizona or Kansas City, Jones could actually be a starter. I think more likely he's a career backup. Not like Jones is a high upside guy with potential that hasn't been tapped. The arm is there. But as long as he continues to be fidgety in the pocket, he will have a hard time playing.
With the combine going down this week, what's harder to predict in football in your opinion. High school to college, or college to pro?
high school to college. When you're dealing with 17-, 18-year old kids, there's many more variables compared with 22-year olds. Put it this way: think about when you were 17. Now think about when you were 22. Most of you, let's hope, were way more mature at 22 vs. 17.
Jake, the only baseball question Ive ever asked. Sooners good enough to win the CWS???
Yes. Great 1-2 punch at the top of the rotation in Overton and Gray.
Did the Thunder make a mistake letting me go before making a second big time run at Lebron and the Heat? I appear to be the missing link.
WHICH QB HAS THE BETTER ARM OF THE THREE? BELL THOMPSON OR KNIGHT ?
I DON'T ANSWER QUESTIONS THAT ARE SUBMITTED IN ALL CAPS
Hey Jake. What's up with all the doom and gloom on here? Are OU fans really that spoiled that they just expect national championships every year? They lost 1 conference game last year, which they should've won. I just don't get it. There are about 110 other D-1 programs that would love to have the success that OU has had.
"Are OU fans really that spoiled that they just expect national championships every year?" Yes.
Jake have you heard about Derek Lewis former UT TE now coaching at UF being a candidate at OU? BTW They closed OSU's campus for snow for the first time in a century. IDKW because I thought they all could drive their tractors to class. LOL
Geez, Bedlam sideswipe. Yes, have heard Lewis' name thrown out there. Don't know how serious a candidate he is, but looking into it. Definitely fits the profile of what they're gunning for with this last hire.
Going with 5:01 today.... over or under?
I'm like clockwork.
To Sea: the Thunder can make that happen this year
Thunder could win it any of the next 6 years. OU football still a couple years away, and OU basketball is playing above their heads, but let's be realistic.
The Thunder don't need James Harden, they need a big who can score around the basket. That's the missing link.
Or someone who can guard LeBron. Maybe they got that in Ronnie Brewer.
Guys, that's it for me today. Thanks for all the questions. We'll do it again next Monday. Those of you in Oklahoma, stay safe in the snow. Follow SoonerNation as we break down the QB competition this week.
