Greetings all. Welcome to the beginnings of Champ Week.
Who is your POY at this point? I would probably say Trey Burke, but it's getting harder to pick against Oladipo.
Kirk: Funny you should ask. I am a bit late to this call because I was getting info on how wide open this race is. My vote changed from last night when I went to bed to when I awoke this morning. Today it's Otto Porter. Talk to me tomorrow.
After last night, if Nova loses out how many wins in the Big East tourney to make the dance? Also can Louisville winning out help them get in if nothing else?
Dan: Well I'm going to see Villanova tonight. Think if they beat the Hoyas, they're in. Be hard to keep them out w/ that many quality wins.
Was Saturday your first game at VCU? If all the moves happen with conference changes that Espn report to the a10 losing 6 of the best 8 or so teams what do you think a VCU should do - so little in common with most that will remain
PJ: It was and it was fun. Best defense I've seen by anyone all year. As for VCU, I think they can stay where they are and be the kingpin of htat conference. That's not a bad thing.
Any chance Notre Dame decides to back out of ACC deal and go with new Big East long-term?
No doubt Larranaga has done a great job @ Miami this year, but do you think Steve Alford is a serious contender for COY?
Tom: He'll get and deserve votes but I'd imagine it will be a two-man race btw Jim Larranaga and John Thompson III.
Seems like no matter how many games Indiana loses, they maintain the no. 1 seed..... your thoughts?
Joe Lunardi had them the third overall No. 1 this morning, which is big. It means they don't get Indianapolis. That's essentially what the midwest teams are duking it out over.
It seems the Missouri Tigers have finally figured out their identity, no more ill-advised threes, scoring points in the paint, attackting the basket. And finally, last night against Arkansas, they showed flashes of playing actual defense. What do you think of the Missouri Tigers making a late season run?
Daryl: Well I agree with all of that but I also wish they could win away from home. It's worrisome that a team can be that different depending on location.
If certain mid-majors, such as MTSU and Louisiana Tech lose in their conference tournament final, do they get at-large bids? If there was ever a year for them to get in, it's this year.
John: totally agree with you. To me if you'd have a stellar regular-season this year especially and lose in a conference tourney, there shouldn't be punishment. All of these bubble major teams have had plenty of chances to prove their worth. I hope the committee aggrees with us.
Who are your Big Ten, Big 12 and ACC POY? I think it should be Oladipo, McLemore and Larkin.
Nate: Torn between Oladipo and Burke. Need to see that last game. Torn between McLemore and Smart, but lean McLemore and agree with Larkin.
Since Providence is playing in the deepest (not the best) conference do they have a legit chance to get an at-large bid to the tourney? 17-12 overall and 9-8 in the confrence
John: I doubt it but I really am impressed with the turnaround there. I'd say they have to slay a few giants in NY to make it happen. Not out of the question. Bright future for the new Big East.
Bruce Weber has a team that was picked to finish 6th in the Big 12 tied for first with one game left to go, zero upsets, and four of five losses against teams that are, or have been, ranked #1. Talked to me about COY for The Bruce.
Taylor: Agree. He's a great candidate, too. There are a lot of them. Really impressed with what he's done there. I still say it's hard to unseat Larranaga and Thompson but doesnt' discredit what he's done.
How far does UCLA have to go in the tourney for Ben Howland to keep his job?
Karl: Interesting question. It's hard to say they're terrible now, isn't it? I mean look at hte Pac 12 standings. Also know that UCLA is judged differently. Will be very interesting to see how this plays out.
Are you buying Duke as the favorite now with a healthy Ryan Kelly in the lineup, provided he can keep up his conditioning given the amount of time he was out?
Derrin: Nationally? No. I think they're among the favorites but how can we tab any one team a favorite this year? I just think it's still wide open. Certainly the Blue Devils are heavy in the mix with him in the lineup but not alone.
If the Big 10 ends in a 4-way tie, does the tournament winner, if it's one of those teams, get a #1 seed?
Andrew: Their final isn't until Sunday. Be a big departure for the committee to wait on that, but you never know. I do think they resumes can be parsed a littel bit to differentiate between them.
how far can nova get if they make ncaa tourney?
Greg: Dude, get there first.
What matchup would you most like to see for the national championship game?
Adam: Umm... I'd be happy with any game right about now that's a good one. But I think I might see Louisville-Indiana. Think the Cards are sneaking up on people again.
Who could be this years "George Mason" in the NCAA tournament? (If there is one.)
Mike: Well Saint Louis maybe. Billikens are awfully good defensively, unselfish and veteran. That's a great combination. VCU is in the mix. Creighton if McDermott gets really hot.
What is your take on automatic bids, should it be regular season champ, tourney champ or some combo of the finishes?
Jamie: I understand the argument for eliminating the tourney champ as the automatic bid winner but the entire NCAA Tournament is predicated on win and advance, so why not the conference tourneys? I think a better solution is that the committee more seriously considers regular-season champs from smaller conferences as opposed to major conference middle of hte pack teams who've done nothing to take advantage of their advantages.
Does Louisville win the Big East tourney and either way, how far you got em going? Siva got his mojo back against Cincy!
Ali: Just said think they're sneaking up on folks. I wouldn't be surprised to see them in Atlanta. Cutting down nets.
How do you think Xavier will do in the new Big East?
Sean: Well. Established program Good facilities. Committed to hoops. Name-brand. Recruit nationally. Only make Xavier better.
Robert Morris will be the first 16-seed to beat a 1-seed. Write it down and remember who told you.
Got it, Dean.
I see Kansas now a 1 seed in the midwest, do you think the head of the ncaa would be promoting a possible ku/mu game at the sprint center in the 2nd round?
Caleb: Agree they could get a 1 seed but know the committee truly doesn't set up those sort of matchups, conspiracy theories to the contrary.
Will a win tonight at Auburn, and a win Saturday at home against Mizzou lock it up for Tennessee?
Jason: Well a win at Auburn doesn't do anything. A loss at Auburn would be detrimental, so I suppose a win matters. If that makes sense.
What team has a better chance of making a run thru a single elimination tournament, a defensive team that gets hot or an offensive team that focuses on D for a few weeks?
Jamie: I tend to think you either are committed to defense or you're not. That's not something you can just turn on and off because it takes too much work and discipline. So I lean defensive team.
Dana, do we need to start a charity drive to get you a better internet connection. What happened last week? You still on dial up :)
Sam: My computer needed a vacation. Or the squirrel on the wire operating it ran out of nuts. Apologies.
How far can UNLV now that they have their full roster and Moser is alomost back to 100% and the team is playing it best basketball of the year
Mark: Always thought Vegas would be dangerous and kept waiting for it to play that way. Maybe now is the time. If they do get it together, tough tough out.
Hey Dana, is Duke the best offensive team in the country? All five starters have had at least 1 25 point game this year, with 3 of them having 30 point games. Can any other team put out a five man team with that much fire power?
Matthew: I think Indiana can.
Final 4....Gonzaga, Creighton, Saint Louis and VCU. No major 6 conference teams. Wouldn't that be amazing! TV ratings would be terrible and it would be a NCAA nightmare!
Patrick: He said with a mwah ha ha!
If Kentucky loses to Florida this weekend, what are their chances to get in the tourney? Would they need to make SEC final?
John: Well first they absolutely have to beat Georgia. No ifs, ands or buts. Then a Florida win, I'd think, would lock it up. Two losses and they'd have to win the SEC. Lose the wrong one and it's an uncomfortable Selection Sunday.
Duke or UNC Saturday night?
Do you have a true "favorite" to win the A10 Tournament in Brooklyn next week? From top to bottom these teams have been beating each other up all season. Easy to pick X, VCU, SLU and Butler...but you'd have to think any team from the 12th seed and up could make a run.
Zach: Nope, I don't. It's crazy wide open, I agree with you. I think if forced to pick, I'd lean Saint Louis but agree that there are plenty that could win.
Please tell me that unlike many people on message boards, you consider Gonzaga to be a threat. I watched them beat my Pokes, and I am sure that they're legit.
Tim: I absolutely do. Saw them against Butler. Final result be damned. That's a very good team. I'm tired of people talking about their conference. At least they beat everyone in it. Other teams are losing putrid games in their conference - BC, Penn State. C'mon.
Georgetown leans on Otto to score big every game for them to win. Do you think he can carry them like Danny Manning and Kemba Walker did to a Final four? and if not can they survive him having a bad game in the Tournament
Joe: Because of the way they play - low-scoring, defensive minded - they can. It's not like he has to score 30. I also think Markel Starks is there to pick up slack, too, if need be.
Got any tips on how to deal with a bad roommate?
Michigan or Indiana on Sunday?
Brian: Logic says Michigan. THis season is illogical, so probably Indiana.
Most underrated team in the country?
Rory: Not sure if underrated is the right word but I keep going back to the one no one is talkign about again and that's Louisville.
What percent chance to give you Gonzaga to winning the WCC tournament?
Dana, I was really looking forward to Wisc-Mich St but that loss to Purdue killed me. How do you explain it. 15 pt favorite at home. That never happens to Bo Ryan and they were up 9 in the 2nd half!!!
Bill: I have no idea how to explain it. I also don't know how to explain TCU-Kansas or Penn State-Michigan. It's been a weird year. Global warming?
Is Mike Rice on the hot seat at Rutgers?
John: I'd say uncomfortable. Team struggling, he was suspended and they're headed to the Big Ten. Not a good recipe.
Do you see any way that Arizona makes it to Atlanta? They seem to have enough talent but have not looked so hot as of late...
Jason: Again, logically no. I just don't thnk they're good enough but they do have guys who can silly hot and who knows? THis year that might be enough.
Most overrated team?
John: Hmm... maybe Syracuse and I don't just say that because the Orange have lost 3 in a row. I've thought all along that this is a good team but a fairly limited one.
Aaron Craft/Shannon Scott, best defensive combo in the country? How far can the defense and Deshaun Thomas take the Buckeyes in the Tourney?
Josh: I tell my son to watch Aaron Craft every single time he plays, so that says all you need to know about how I feel about him. Thought the way Ohio State defended last night was huge. If they can do that, mix in THomas' offense, watch out.
Which Pac 12 teams will get to the sweet 16?
Jeff: Not sure if any will but think UCLA just might. Mostly so Bill Walton can become apoplectic.
Mem has 0 wins vs any current projected at large team, Can you remember a team like this that got an at large berth?
Travis: Can't say that I have but doesn't mean it doesn't happen. Tigers a very, very strange team.
Which is more flawed: The country's perception of UNM or the rankings depiction of them?
Think I had them 7th in my power rankings. Am I OK?
dana, we all know your hate for UNC, but come tourney time they should prove you wrong (elite 8 surprise) .....
Yeah this week I hate North Carolina! I always love to find out who I hate weekly. For the record, it's truly onions, tomatoes and olives.
What is the best method for picking the tourney this year? I was thinking of consulting a sherpa
David: I'm going to go with my dog. She was studying the scores on my lap last night.
Dana, what senior are you going to miss watching most when next year rolls around?
Dan: Syracuse in the Big East.
Will any team from Georgia ever be relevant again in men's basketball?
Mark: I really thought/hoped/believed that Mark Fox and Brian Gregory could get things done. Still early for Gregory. Do think Dawg are making strides but it's a long road. Feel your pain.
Agree or disagree: Nate Wolters can win South Dakota State a game or two in the Tournament if South Dakota State gets in.
John: Agree. Steph Curry-like.
Do my Jackrabbits win the Summit League tourney? I'm scared...NDSU is a solid team. It would be a shame to see Nate Wolters playing in the NIT
Jordan: They're defense would worry me, too. I get it. I waffled between them for my Jerome pick but sided with the team with the best player. Go Nate!
Speaking of Steph Curry-like... Who are a few other names capable of a steph curry-like march?
Pete: Ian Clark at Belmont, Isaiah Canaan if he gets in from Murray; Wolters; McDermott; If CJ McCollum got cleared for Lehigh he could but not sure that's happening, sadly.
How many teams from the SEC do you see making it to the tournament
Tim: An excellent question. There are like 4 bubble teams, right? Kentucky, Tennessee, Ole Miss, Alabama (last night big hurt). I think maybe only three and it may come down to Kentucky vs. Tennessee.
The Pitt Panthers really have no big time scorer (leading scorer Woodall 11.5) but have one of the deepest benches in D 1 ( 10 guys averaging 10+ minutes and 4 points). Could this be effective in the big dance?
John: Sure. More effective is their defense.
Who has been your biggest disappointment and greatest surprise this season?
Taylor: Biggest surprise is Miami and Georgetown in a tie. Didn't see either coming. Biggest disappointment? Maybe Cincinnati. Thought they'd be a lot better.
Will Rick Pitino get in the Hall of Fame this year?
Bill: I sure hope so. The man deserves it.
So I guess you have no love for my Wahoos......
Jared: No they're just infuriatingly inconsistent. Beat Duke, lose to BC. Lose to 3/4 of the CAA. I'm lost.
Chances that Georgetown loses to Nova like the other big time teams that go to Nova?
James; Not out of the question. Hot streaks are scary this year and not meant to last, it appears.
And on that note, guys, I apologize but I have to run. Gotta get kids in order before leaving for that game. Thanks for the questions, Dana
