Which poison kills the Cowboys more; poor drafting or mismanagement of contracts/free agents?
great question. So good, I think we'll use it as a segment on ESPN Game Day Saturday from 11-2. When you get down to it, I think it's the draft. When you draft good players you always have a pipeline of young, INEXPENSIVE talent (look at the Rangers), which allows you to cherry pick expensive free agents. When you draft poorly, you're always spending $$ on free agents to cover up the mistakes you made in the draft.
JJT, do you think the Rangers will sign Elvis Andrus to a long term deal this year?
Nope. They don't seem willingly to lavishly overpay Andrus and his agent Scott Boras has a history of taking his FA clients to other teams. I would say just enjoy the last 2 years
Hi JJT, what Ranger OF will have the best year: Murphy, Cruz, Martin, or someone else?
Cruz if he's healthy and doesn't get popped for 50 games. Murphy is consistently consistent. He's my choice because too many ifs follow Cruz
Mavs should have fouled Howard instead of Metta 10 seconds later. NBA teams don't know who to/when to foul at the end of games.
Rick carlisle is pretty smart. I think he knows that
When will the cowboys make a decision on doug free?
May. They don't have to hurry. They have time
You never make a final decision until u have to have one. Hypothetically, what if Parnell injured his knee in off-season drills and missed the season. If you cut Free now, when you don't have to, then you're hosed.
From what you been hearing at the combine what position or player has really caught the cowboys interest?
I haven't gotten a sense either way. It's still early. They're looking at OL, DL and safeties for sure.
What type of money did spencer agent ask for in indy?
Spencer wants Ware-like money. He wanted it last year before he had a breakout season, so he really wants it now. Frankly, I wouldn't pay him that much either based on one terrific season
What the responsibility will that 3rd linebacker have in the cover 2 defense?
all players have different responsibilities based on the play called. it varies
Will Sensabaugh, Spears, and free be back next year?
Senabaugh = maybe, Spears = probably, Free = maybe
Is Parnell ready to Start in the cowboys eyes?
he certainly couldn't do any worse than Free last season. Parnell showed some good things. He has 2 years left on his deal with Cowboys. I'd let him compete with Free and see how it goes
how much cap space will be free once romo contract is up?
cap is a fluid number. No matter what happens this offseason, the Cowboys don't have much too sign anyone who matters in FA
I know you want the Cowboys to pick the best available but what position do you think is the number one need for this team?
The need is for good players. I'd start on OL, DL or safety, but the key is to get someone who can play
Is Austin more of a liability or a asset at this point in his career?
he's still an asset. He's only 28 and he can be a dynamic player. The injuries have robbed him of that the last two seasons
Dez is already a young star in this league, but will he make the jump to super stardom going into his fourth year?
I don't think 8 games makes you a star. Did you know Julius Jones has 2 of the top 5 rushing performances in franchise history? If Dez can replicate his performance over 16 games next season he can become a star
Will Kyle wilbur be a linebacker or defensive end? and will victor butler return?
Butler won't be here. Wilbur barely played. I don't know that he has a future
Will the mav make the playoffs?
Nope. They gotta 19-8 just to get to 44 wins and have a shot. That's not happening. They're just not good enough
Tom Brady's new extension happened yesterday that will pay him way less than what he's worth. Yes Brady has a lot of money already but he didn't have to plus it's not like Romo is making chicken feed now. Obviously he did it for the benefit of the team to make them better and have a lot more money to sign guys who could help cause he wants another ring. And obviously he is way better than Romo. Do you see Romo taking such a discount to help this team sign some much needed help or does crazy Jerry WANT to give him 14 million a year cause he feels he deserves it?
I don't think any player should give a hometown discount. This is a business. Manage your cap well, make good decisions and you don't have to beg a player to take less money. Players have a finite amount of time to make money. They should make all that they can. The owners certainly make as much as they can
Everyone wants to know...what can we expect from Profar this season?? Obviously there is still about a month before the season and a lot can change, but what do you anticipate from him?
2-3 months in triple-A. No need to waste his time up here sitting on the bench. That said, it's funny that Wash was getting fired last year cause he wouldn't play Profar. Now, Profar is gonna start in triple-A
Would you keep Anthony Spencer or would you let him walk?
What do you think realistic expectations for the Ranger offense this season should be for fans?
88 wins. In the hunt for the AL West title the last week of the season. contend for playoff spot
You know I'm a Longhorn fan..Would the Cowboys consider Kenny Viccaro at 18?
Absolutely. Not sure where he is on their board, but safeties don't traditionally go high in the draft. It's not a vital position
Does it incense you that Tom Brady took less money in order to help his team? I know that he gained guaranteed money, but we all know that dude could have signed for a lot more if he had wanted to. Guys like him and Dirk should be praised, and guys like Flacco, Romo (whom I think is a great QB), and Brees should be shamed until they won't leave their locker to come to the field. They hamper their team and are essentially saying "I don't want my GM to put a good team around me. I rather lose with a lot of money than win with plenty of money and a good reputation."
No. Dirk is making $22 million a year. Let's not talk about too much of a hometown discount. He ain't broke. Glad he did it, appreciate it but I don't begrudge any dude making as much money as he can. Would you give your company a hometown discount so it could bring in another great employee? I wouldn't.
Which current player will benefit the most by playing the 4-3 defense?
It better be Ratliff
If the Mavs do make the playoffs, will you host a chat where I pick your opinions apart and make you look foolish to the point that you cry?
Nope. I said before the season they weren't going to the playoffs because they were a short team that couldn't shoot, rebound or defend and they didn't have enough playmakers. They probably have to go 19-8 to make the playoffs. A team that hasn't won more than three in a row, but once this season. You being unable to handle the truth is a personal issue bro
Blessings JJT - Thanks for hosting today's chat. Based on Jerry's recent comments (Romo can handle a "porous" offensive line), is he simply delusional? Does he really think this team can contend next season without significant upgrades to the offensive line?
Realistically, I do not see the Cowboys re-signing Spencer. Realistically, what position/player do you see the Cowboys allocating that money to in free agency? Is Reggie Bush an option?
they're not going to sign any big $$ FA. No money for it
Follow up about your Dez answer.."I don't think 8 games makes you a star." How about 29 games? He has 2871 yards, 200 receptions and 27 td's. If not for missing four games as a rookie the kid would have over 3000 yards in three years./Sounds like more than an eight game sample to me.
I'm not ripping Dez, but he didn't have a great year until the last half of this season. Before then, he had moments but couldn't sustain his high level of play. Dez had 1 100-yard performance in first 30 games. He had five in last 13.
Will Kevin McHale be able to develop Thomas Robinson into the star Sacramento hoped for when they drafted him at #5 in the draft?
who knows? I do know only a dumb organization would trade the 5th pick in the draft 50 games into his career
Do you agree with R. Gosselin that the Cowboys shold draft OL on the first 3 rounds or should they go best available regardless of position?
i think that's impossible to say without knowing who's available when it's their turn to draft. The Cowboys have had THEME drafts before and they've been a disaster. Draft the best players and it's OK
Hi JJT, do you think the Rangers will resign either David Murphy or Nelson Cruz after this year and why don't they seem worried about the fact they might be missing 2/3 of their OF next year?
Let's see how they play. Seriously. Neither is a star, so there's no need to rush it. Play it out and see what happens
You are simply wrong. I don't begrudge someone making millions, but when they do demand a ton of money knowing full well that the team is now restricted from signing top flight talent in free agency, then that player is inconsiderate of the teammates he already has and is telling them that he rather have his than help the team, and this is the definition of selfishness. If you want to make a ton of money, go do it in a business that doesn't screw over your fellow employees. Dirk gave enough of a discount to sign 2 solid rotational players. I thought you were someone who advocated giving, but it's clear that you are all about getting what you can get. And when did what you say become "truth", and everyone else just has opinions?
you're worth whatever someone is willing to pay you. Contracts are ALWAYS about leverage. He has it because of the Cowboys' ineptitude. I see capitalism is great except when it affects your football team...laughable
Why wouldn't the Rangers package in Elvis in a trade package to bring in GianCarlo Stanton or David Price? I wouldn't let him go for nothing
who says Miami or Tampa wants to do that deal. They would have the same problem, trying to sign him
If Dallas has a shot at Ziggy Ansah in round one would they be better off taking him and then trying to get OG Larry Warford in round 2 (maybe trade up to get him) or should they target Jonathan Cooper in round 1 and hope to get a great D-lineman in round 2?
he's an athlete who hasn't played that much football. He's too much of a risk. Take a more proven player
JJT - There is obviously enough fuel to the fire of Romo haters and enough for Romo lovers. Is there a chance that someone can write an honest article, based on fair facts from both sides analyzing his play? I think many of us would benefit from an expert's opinion of what he has meant (or cost) the Cowboys franchise during his 6.5 years.
nope. I'm a columnist. I'm going to WRITE my opinion on the topic.
Just an FYI for everyone...Tom Brady will end up making more over the next 3 years than he would have had he not done this extention. The story is not about him taking less money, its about cap-manueverability. Big difference.
Glad to see there are a few people who understand what's up. That said, if Romo WANTS to take less money then fine. No problem. My problem is with people who say he SHOULD take more money. That's silly. We all work hard to make as much money as we can in our chosen profession. romo is no different
Dirk gave up $16 million...that is no small amount of money, but he realizes he has enough for ANYONE to live on and be happy with.
who are you to determine what's enough for someone. How arrogant are you? It's all relative. Some folks think $50K makes you rich. Others $200K. Others $1 million. Others $10 million. It's an individual choice. It's not for you to say who has earned enough money. Listen to yourself. Now, if you want to be a socialist I have no problem with that. You want everyone to have the same. Coo. If not, you're tripping
If the cowboys release free and sensabaugh and restructure Austin contract do you see them getting a big free agent?
nope. No help coming in FA bro
I think a lot of people have to be reminded this is a chat that you are hosting. Which means you are answering questions based on your opinion. With that said to the argument that people should take a hometown discount, what about when Emmitt held out? Or Deion? or all of the other greats that did it.
The issue is people who think I'm trying to persuade them to agree with me. I'm not. They can accept what I say. Or reject it. It matters not to me. We're having a discussion. Athletes are entitled to make as much money as they can. Period. No different than actors, singers, etc.
You say "I don't begrudge any dude making as much money as he can", which is understandable. Shouldnt you also say "I don't begrudge any dude who is willing to make less money for the sake of winning championships".
is it Romo's fault Jerry gave bad deals to Miles Austin, Jay Ratliff, Gerald Sensabugh and others and that's why they're tight under the cap?
Who will return punts next year?
Harris, I would presume
JJT, under Garrett, the cowboys have lost a lot of close games(under 7 pts).In your opinion, what does this speak to?
nothing. They did pretty well this year and were bad last year. You;re usually going 50-50 on games that go down to the last minute or two
Don't you think Coach Marinelli with his track record of getting the most out of his d-lineman would be able to turn Ansah into a star?
doesn't matter. i want guys who are proven players. Cowboys have no time for high-risk, high-reward players
JJT, would you label a person without limits as possibly dangerous? If so, how do you feel about an economic system without limits? You're allowed to use google to help!
Romo is worth whatever Jerry pays him. No more, no less.Any fool can see that.
At 250 lbs, wouldn't Spencer fit better at slb, and would that be a cheaper positionthan de? Thanks.
$10-12 million is too much to pay SLB in 4-3 who is gonna be dropping into coverage. He'd be kind of small at DE, which is why they moved him to LB in the first place
Are you riding the Angels bandwagonthis year in the AL West? Do you think the A's and Rangers will battle it out again for the last playoff spot?
yep. Their lineup will destroy No. 3-4-5 starters, Weaver is a true ace.
Drafting has killed this team from doing anything worth a damn. Most of the blame falls right JJ's doorstep. What's your opinion?
What's your opinion on the playcalling for the Cowboys? Even if Garrett gives it up, don't all head coaches have final say over the plays that are called on offense and defense?
interesting question. The play calls themselves are not a problem for me. If a play works, then it was a good call. If not, it was a bad play. Is Garrett a good play-caller, that's another type of question. I'm not sure he is. Too many slow starts makes me question game-planning and scripting. Interesting question
RE: Brady taking less money....you say a player should make all he can, so does that mean you do not respect what Brady did? Winning and Legacy > Money
my only point is those folks who think Romo is somehow being selfish by not taking market value is dumb. If he CHOOSES to do so, then fine. If not, get off his back. Who are we to say when a man has made enough money. Jerry ain't giving fans no hometown discount
While we may not all agree whether $50,000 or $150,00 a year is enough money, we can all gree that $7 million or $8 million per year is enough, correct? If it is not enough for someone, then they have issues and need to seek help, but obviously not from you. When you are sitting across the table from Jerry with your agent, and you know the difference between $8 million a year and $15 million a year is a OL and a safety in free agency that could desperately help this team, and you demand the $15 million, you are plain selfish
Again, who gave you that right? Seriously. Why not $100K? Dude, you a trip
In all seriousness, how does somebody like yourself actually get a job in writing? I read your articles and see that your talent is lacking, so I'm more than a little befuddled at how you're employed as a "writer." Do you have some secret?
I'm at the top of my profession by any definition you choose to use, so I must be doing OK. Thanks for reading. Be blessed.
Should Mavs fans be mad at Derek Fisher for joining the Thunder? Was it misleading for him to claim he was leaving the Mavs to spend more time with his family?
who wants to play for a bad team like Mavs, when they can compete for a title?
You are a columnist whom shares your opinion. In your opinion, is Garrett the right guy to lead this team as currently constructed where it wants to go?
I think so, but he better win 10 games this year by any means possible
GREAT chat today. Talk to you next week. Keep reading Jacob and Bryan.
