Welcome and thank you for being a part of HornsNation's weekly Tuesday chat. A bunch of stuff to cover with Texas coming off its second junior day and starting up spring practice. Lets do what it do...
Is Rick Barnes at all on the hot-seat?
He has to be. I understand this is a young team and he was handcuffed with the Myck Kabongo stuff but this program hasn't exactly been lights out over the past few seasons, especially come tourney time. He's done a great job at UT for the most part. But the energy around the program leads me to believe some new blood could do some good. Then again, if he can somehow get Julius Randle to campus and pair him with this young nucleus then maybe there is something there.
Who's seat is hotter: Rick Barnes or Mack Brown?
Are Rick Barnes and/or Mack Brown on the hot-seat?
Barnes more so than Brown. Brown can change a lot of minds if he can get this team to produce like they should in 2013.
Who will be the Running Backs for Texas in 2013?
J Gray, Malcolm Brown and Joe Bergeron will be the guys Chris. I'm saying Gray leads the team in both rushing yards and TDs. Carter said yesterday that he believes Bergeron will lead team in TDs.
I understand this is an incredibly sensitive situation(not the best way to start a question, i know) , but have you heard anything with Thomas Johnson? Putting aside whatever chances there are that he could end up at Texas, will he return to football? Guy seemed like he would have been an exciting player
That's a real touchy subject that I don't feel comfortable getting into simply because I don't know all of the details. I spoke with Thomas numerous times in high school and he was always an upstanding young man. So I'll leave it at that. I do hope we get to see him back on a field at some point. Too good not to be.
How is the team going to respond to Major's change to a fast paced offense? Is this going to be a slow process to adjust, similar to the failed "power game" offense?
I think the transition should be pretty smooth. If you think about it the transition to the multiple packages and different way of going about things that Harsin implemented really didn't take too long for the players to latch on to. This system calls for a faster pace, sure, but it also calls for less packages. Shouldn't be an issue.
After watching Marquise Goodwin dominate some parts of the NFL Combine, is it clear that our coaches did not use him correctly?
No question. I heard someone say on the radio today that 40 times aren't really that important to the front office of an NFL team and that it always falls back to what the player did in games. But I'm not so sure that applies to Goodwin. He was vastly underused. Should have gotten Tavon Austin touches.
Although Texas A&M is the hot team in the state right now, we should take some pride in the fact that our WR Goodwin (12 reps) outbenched their potential top 5 pick DE Damontre Moore (11 reps)???
You are really scraping the barrel with that one Jake.
DID JORDAN HICKS GET HI RED SHIRT YEAR AND WHO DO YOU SEE IS THE NEXT LOVELL PINCKNEY AT THE WIDEOUT ON THE FIELD WISE NOT OFF IT.....
NOT KNOWN IF HICKS WILL GET MEDICAL RS YET. AS FOR THE NEXT LOVELL PINCKNEY (NICE REFERENCE BTW) I'LL GO WITH CAYLEB JONES BECAUSE OF HIS SIZE.
Which prospects from the last junior day do you feel Texas is in the best position to land?
In no particular order Terrell Cuney, Otaro Alaka, Jake McMillan.
William how much does it cost to sign up for the ESPN insider, I really respect alot of y'all's articles but am limited in reading most because you have to be an insider.
Jordan, we appreciate you reading our stuff. Your best bet is to go the 2-year route for 2.50 a month. 1 year is 3.33. Here is a link: http://insider.espn.go.com/insider/benefits
over/under 500 rushing this year? I say over with the hurry up offense if its anything like that bowl game performance.
rushed 492 times in 2012 and I think they'll do more of that this season. I'll take the over.
Will J. Gray reach 1000 rushing? I really like him as our primary back?
Tough but I'll give him benefit of the doubt and say yes. Had just below 800 last year and really didn't factor into things heavily until after Brown got injured.
chances we land ed Paris this wk wen he commits? also any news on Randell
Paris committed to LSU yesterday Adrian. Julius has Texas in his final five and will announce on ESPN soon.
What can we expect from J. gray this year? Will he put the yoke on and carry this team on his back?
He should be the team's primary back without question. I think he'll rush for over 1,000 yards and be a growing factor in the passing game. Texas needs Brown to stay healthy all season. I can see him rushing for 600+
Spurs or Thunder in the West?
Black and silver all day.
I know its early in the spring and injuries can happen but who do you see starting at the two defensive tackle positions. I think its Desmond Jackson and Malcom Brown. Also do you see Kendall Thompson, Jordan Hicks,Steve Edmond starting at linebacker. I think that's the best combo with Peter Jinkens a very strong Four.
I'd say Jackson and Brown for now. I think Ridgeway will factor in there as the season progresses. I think you'll see Jinkens in there before Thompson. Just a hunch. Don't forget about Dalton. He's trimmed down a bunch this offseason.
Can MB2 finish top 3 DT in the Big 12 this year? And, any chance we see Timbo Cole this year?
I do believe he has the chance. He's going to play a ton this season and should benefit with what Texas has around him. I think Cole will see special teams for sure. Going to be tough to crack that LB rotation.
How alarming is it to NFL teams that Demontre Moore only did 12 bench press reps at the combine (fewest of any D-lineman)?
Eh I think it's a little concerning but the dude can play and he proved it over and over again in the best conference in CFB.
From what you've seen with the 2014 DB's who is "the best" Cover Corner out there? (uncommitted) and does UT have a solid chance?
Hmm, Darrion Johnson is awfully good. I really like Tony Brown because of how physical he is with guys right at the line of scrimmage. Think Johnson is Texas' to lose. Brown not so much.
Now I'm not complaining, but why don't you think a guy like Cannon has much interest in atm?
Johnny Football, Kevin Sumlin, SEC just to name a few.
Who is the most interesting player to watch during the spring?
There are several for me. Cayleb Jones, Kendall Sanders, Duke Thomas, Quandre Diggs (at SS?), Hassan Ridgeway, Jake Raulerson, Daje Johnson, Dalton Santon, Peter Jinkens, Adrian Colbert.
Over/ Under= 4.5 Longhorns get drafted
under. Some will be picked up in free agency.
Who the baseball team?
Assuming you meant to say "how." If that's the case, so far so good if you are a Longhorns fan. 6-1 and just swept Nebraska at the Disch.
How many new commits do you see us getting by the end of March? Who will they be?
I'll say three. Can't name them here.
How does Texas stand with Cannon and the big time DBs?
I think things are on solid ground between Texas and Cannon. I do think Baylor and Tech are really appealing to him though and think the Longhorns have some work to do. Longhorns improving in the eyes of DSG and Darrion Johnson. Jamal Adams comes in this weekend, which is huge.
Had Mack not implemented the 'No more official visits rule' for his commits, do you think more guys would have committed at either JD?
I do for sure.
Who's the next commit for the horns? Alaka? McMillon? Cuney?
We've offered 10 DEs now. Roberson is committed and we like our chances with Johnson and McMillon. If we have those 3 in the fold, what happens with the other 7? Really hope we're not giving up on Solomon Thomas!
Good question. DE is one of the primary positions of need in 2014. Texas has the ability to take up to 4 I believe. They aren't giving up on Solomon. He's way too good and likes Texas way too much.
Do you think this new strategy of recruiting will back fire on Texas especially with the Aggies being the hot team? Is Paris the first of a long list of kids bailing on UT?
Paris and Texas were never a sure thing. So the new recruiting strategy didn't have anything to do with him picking LSU. There were other factors there. I think you'll have to wait at least until the middle of 2015 rec. year to really see how this affects recruits. I don't think it matters that much if Texas wins this fall.
How does Texas get the ball to Daje more this season? His touches last year were way too few.
Well not having DJ Monroe in there will help. I think you need to line him up in the backfield more than last season. He's an adequate WR but I think he'd fair much better in backfield sets. He's a tough guy to take down. You combine that with a full head of steam and he's going to get you a ton of yards.
Do the Longhorns have to make it to the second week of the NCAA Tournament in 2013-14 for Rick Barnes to feel safe about his job? How likely is this if Kabongo does not return to Austin?
At the very least I think they've got to get to the second weekend. Yes. I think there is a decent shot of that happening but it depends on who Texas ends up signing and the offseason maturation of Ridley.
Are you really buying the Longhorns have bettter play out of their DT? Malcolm Brown looks good but I'm not sold on undersized Desmond Jackson and I have no faith in Ashton Dorsey and Chris Whaley.
I am. Jackson is undersized but the strongest guy on the team. And DT is a position where height can sometimes be your enemy. Dorsey is a player that I think needs to really step up his game. Whaley is fine and Brown will be all-conference by 2014. Ridgeway is going to turn some heads. I really believe that.
Who ends up as the big 12's best QB by the end of the season?
None other than... David Ash. Or one of the 1,000 legit QBs OSU has.
Just a question about an OL 2015 Zach Rogers I see Texas offering some 2015 kids already and I have watched this kids for like 3 years now my son played against him and this kids is really good and one of the best in his class and wondering if Texas has any interest and if not you know why?
Interest is there. And they'd be smart to go after him considering he is teammates of Jamal Adams.
Real Madrid or Barcelona in the Clasico?
Real Madrid because they are up 3-0. I cheated.
Do you see Kd cannon commiting to Texas? And what top prospects do you see commiting?
I'd say no right now. Think Darrion Johnson, Alaka, McMillon and Cuney are likely.
Jamal Adams and Darrion Johnson seem like the two DBs that Texas has the best chance with. Is Texas in a good position with Nick Watkins?
Yeah Texas is in a good spot right now with Watkins. Def in his top schools.
I'm still trying to figure out who the heck is going to be playing LB for us. Any ideas who will start? Do you really trust Jordan Hicks to stay healthy. Steve Edmonds and Dlaton Santos look slimmer but are they better at reading a play and getting off of blocks? Kedall Thompson and Tevin Jackson only look marginally better. Peter Jenkins looks good, albeit very young.
The upside to that question for Texas is that there is depth there that hasn't been there in while. I think you'll see Hicks, Edmond and Jinkens starting but there will be plenty of shuffling throughout the course of a ball game. I think Thompson will have a big year as well as Santos.
Who are you projecting to emerge as our starting secondary? Does Quandre Diggs stay at CB our does he get moved to safety? He may be the best tackler but he is also very undersized for a safety
Undersized but packs a mean punch. This all depends on if Duke Thomas is ready to step in and play at left CB. If he is I'll go Thomas, Byndom, Diggs, Phillips.
Any update on Ke'aun Kinner?
Doesn't look like he'll end up at Texas as of right now.
First DB commit. Who ya got?
Darrion Johnson. Think he might have had he made it to Austin on Saturday.
Do you talk to coaches about why this one and not that one just wondering
They can't comment on recruits until they are signed.
Who do you see as possible transfer candidates?
One of the QBs and possibly an OL.
Hi Will, always a pleasure to read HornsNation's stuff!Honestly, how do you see Texas' chances in Louisiana? Does LSU take Brown and Paris and Texas take St. Augustine and Edna Karr? Is that how this is supposed to work?
Appreciate you reading us man. Thank you. I think LSU is in a very good position with Brown but Texas is a sleeper team there. LSU has a track commitment from his sister, which helps its chances. I think Larry Porter coming over really helps Texas in Louisiana. Very strong state for recruiting in 2014. One of the best in the country.
True of False, Jordan Hicks offically becomes a bust in 2013?
False. I think he'll come in with a chip on his shoulder knowing that these types of questions are coming up with his name involved, and with all the stuff that happened to him.
Where do things stand with Dylan Sumner-Gardner?
He likes Texas but I know he really likes A&M too. Going to have to stay on him if they want to get him.
The only fundamentals I see Texas needs to work on Tackling is first hitting low. Very rarely do I see the D attacking the legs, everyone is soo comfortable going head up in practice they forget that when there standing up like that trying to make tackles, its tooo easy to get juked. I see it, and hopefully they can fix it. Risk for Reward, if we practice soft, we'll play soft. Injuries occur.
What 2014 players are at the top of Mack Brown's wish list?
Oh there are quite a few. Cannon, Thomas, Brown, DSG, Adams to name a few.
What are the chances that an out of state recruit commits? And who would it be?
I think it's pretty good this year. Anthony Jones is a possibility. Joseph Paul.
Do you see Jermaine Roberts committing soon?
Nah, not for a while. But Texas has to feel good about where it stands for sure.
Why are Texas coaches going after less talented players such as Jake McMillon so early instead of going after the more talented national guys (Lorenzo Carter for example)?
They have gone after Carter as well. For those that don't know Carter is thought of as the top DE in Georgia by many. McMillon is a really good player in his own right.
How many OOS players do you think Texas will get?
I'd place the over/under at 2.5
Alright folks that'll do it for this week's chat. Thank you again for stopping by and taking a part in it. Be sure to check out HornsNation.com.
