Let's do this!
Does Sherman have a legit case for top CB in the league? Or is it still Revis?
Sherman was the top CB in the NFL this year, but I still give it to Revis. Revis' body of work is just so far superior. Of course I realize that Revis is a bit of an unknown now, as he is returning from a serious injury. But as top CBs go, Revis relies on his great athletic ability and speed less than most-he is an amazing technique and mentally strong CB. Also, while Sherman was #1 in 2012, I still think Revis' healthy seasons were superior to Sherman's 2012.
Now that the Combine is over who are some of the players that might have cost themselves some serious compensation?
As you know, that does happen. But the book isn't closed on those that didn't run or test well. Think of Joe Haden a few years ago. He really ran terrible times in his Combine 40...then lit it up at Florida's Pro Day and redeemed himself in a big way. That will still happpen for some of these guys that didn't show well. But the guys that failed the medical, drug tests or didn't do well on the mental tests or team meetings, could be those that are hit hardest.
What does Seattle do in 1st Round; Defensive Line or WR or someting else? I am leaning towards Defensive Line in first and WR/Offensive Line in Second.
One more DL would certainly be a nice addition-maybe more of a DE type. But I also would love to see them add a big nasty road grader to play RT, or even move into guard. Stick with the tough and physical theme at both positions...has served them well so far!
Realistically, how many Alex Smith suitors are there? And what's the best Niners can get?
Just got off the air in SF right before this chat and also had a long talk with Mike Sando last night on this topic...check out the NFC West blog. I bet four or five teams have interest, with KC being the best fit for team and player. The most I could see KC giving up are their very early 3rd and 5ths for Smith. SF would then have a TON of draft picks-and few roster spots for said rooks. One of the teams that is best suited to trade up on DDay
AC/DC "Shake Your Foundation"....LOUD
How far does Star Lotulelei's heart condition possibly drop him in the draft?
We don't know yet and he is being checked out again next week. From what I understand it could be serious or not at all and that there are many factors that could contribute to the issue at Indy.
Is Trufant a reach at #13 for Tampa? Seems that the #2 CB spot is up for grabs
Seems early to me, but Milliner's stock is soaring and he might not even be there for the Lions. But I think Rhodes is the #2 CB now..but will he be there at #13? I have my doubts
We all know about his 40 time, but is Tavon Austin a fit for NE with Welker probably coming back?
On paper, yes. Austin has a great skill set for the slot. In fact, he is much more dangerous than Welker with his speed, etc. However, this is all easier said than done. Not only is Welker very quick, but he is extremely mentally quick. His ability to read coverage on the run instantly and be on the same page with Brady is uncanny-and that is what makes him uncoverable at times. Also, Welker takes a beating almost like a RB. He isn't just tackled or pushed out of bounds by small CBs outside the numbers...he is blasted by LBs over the middle.
In response to Dan- I see Justin Hunter as the best fit- a bigger guy on the outside is what theve needed.
Agreed. I must say, I am beginning to have my doubts about Brady's deep passing ability, but still-Hunter might be a real asset in the mold of what they wanted from Lloyd.
Last year Steelers were surprised DeCastro fell to them at 24th. Which player shockingly drops and is available at 17th this year?
Lebo Guy! Nice! I am not positive on that. Maybe K Allen? A big WR would be a fine addition. But I actually think PGH takes the best D player availalbe-and position doesn't really matter. This could be a brutal offseason for the Steelers considering their cap and I see needs everywhere for this team.
Is there any WR that you could see the Vikings drafting in round 1? Where do you see the Vikings rank for WR/TE in the NFL?
Again, my K Allen to Vikes. Hunter? Perhaps. I think Patterson will be gone. I also don't think Harvin leaves town. I like Rudolph and love Harvin, but the rest of the WR/TE crop with the exception maybe of Wright is bare. They need one more WR-preferably a bigger guy that can get downfield and help in red zone.
How did that work out for the Steelers?
Are you suggesting that DeCastro was a bad pick and a bust? The guy was hurt pretty much all year.
Come on Matt. Report about Alex Smith to KC for a 2013 2nd. And where does this now put KC in the AFC West? Right behind Denver and a outside chance to steal the division?
That is a nice return for SF...EARLY pick in 2nd! Hey, I picked KC to win this division last year and while I am not a big Smith fan, if he values the football as he usually does they will be very much improved. Much better coached than a year ago too in KC.
do the Colts make a run at Ed Reed
They could. Could make a run at several of the Ravens D UFAs. A veteran leader on the backend of that D could really pay off,but overall, I think this team isn't close to being championship caliber and therefore, I would use my offseason resources on younger players than Reed.
Matt, tell KING Kevin no one is reporting compensation. Only thing being reported is that is multiple picks.
No one seems to know-exactly. But going to KC was about the worst kept secret of all times. Again, SF now has great draft pick resources to move all over the draft and maybe land a rookie stud D player by moving up.
Matt who do you have the colts picking in the first round
Best D player available or one of the two stud OGs
Landing spot for Steven Jackson? East Rutherford, NJ with the New York Football Giants?
Nah...Brown and Wilson and maybe throw in a 5th round RB for Giants. I like Jackson in ATL. Love him in GB and they have cap room, but not their style to make such a move with RB.
So...now, Raiders grab Geno Smith?
M-Dub, honestly how do you feel Andy Reid will do since he just spent 14 years in Philly where they really didn't appreciate him? That had to take a toll and how does it not effect him?
He also tragically lost his son while being very close to the team last year. But who knows. Reid knows O and knows how to win games in this league. Has his faults, but overall, a very good coach and a massive upgrade for KC. I hope he keeps the O balanced, esp with Smith as his QB. Still, bad division outside of DEN and #18 won't last forever in the division.
Matt, Oakland at 3, should they go D-Line or O-line? I would be happy with either choice but not Geno with the 3rd pick.
The Raiders need to look at G Smith, Star, Floyd, Joeckel, Fisher and Milliner...all fill major needs. I like Fisher and Joeckel a lot, but they really are not RTs and OAK might be able to find a RT later.
Now that the combine is done, would the NYJ be best suited to take Geno at #9, or are they better off going best available OLB? How would Geno fit in Marty Mornhinweg's WCO?
Not a bad fit, but he does have doubts with inaccuracy. But think Rex is willing to draft a QB in Round 1 and wait as he develops while sitting on the hot seat? Some great looking edge rushers in this draft that NYJ should be able to land...bet they go that route. How about Matt Moore in NYJ?
What do we see NE do with this new cap space from the Brady deal?
Bet they Franchise Vollmer and resign Talib. Then, let Welker test the waters around the league...and eventually resign him. Think TB might have mentioned something to ownership like "Hey, sure I will restructure, but how about you bring my buddy Wes back?"
If you were GM of the Broncos, what would be your 3 top offseason priorities?
They are in pretty good shape! Those DTs played WAY better than I expected last year-but both are UFAs and I see that as priority #1. MLB would probably be second, but again, Brooking surprisingly did very well as a run player. 3rd would be interior OL. Add one guy at OC/OG to add competition and upside.
A couple of reports came out earlier that Wallace to Miami is there #1 choice, i love it and take best CB round 1 what say you?
I don't love Wallace, but I do like this fit. Tannehill is a very good deep passer and they need a guy to take the top off. Just don't totally trust Wallace, esp after this year. As for CB in round 2, that is fine-as would be OT or an edge pass rusher. I am also going to assume that Hartiline will be resigned to go along with a guy like Wallace. MANY enticing TEs in this free agent and esp draft class too...MIA should add one. OT worries me though...
ZAGS will be #1 on the poll with the Indiana loss? Would you agree to this?
Wrong chat my man
Why franchise Vollmer? NE has won in the past with a lot of nobodies at that position, why not use the $ to upgrade the d?
Their OL is always coached up extremely well and Brady helps that as well. I see your point. But Vollmer is just entering his prime and I think he might just be the best RT in the league right now-plus, he can play LT as well at a high level. I do like Cannon though if Vollmer were to move on, but Cannon might also be an effective RG.
wow.. what can you see Niners w/ those first 2 picks? Move up w/ one? They'll have 5 picks in first 3 rds iirc
The are loaded! In a draft that most teams will be looking to trade down, SF could really capitilize by moving up for a guy like K Short perhaps.
Call me crazy but Reggie to the lions seems like a perfect fit right?
It does. Line him up at WR as well. But DET has very little to spend-and they need EVERYthing but DT and MLB on D along with WR help. Can they spend on a RB in a RB Deep Draft?
Thoughts on Te'o? Can he redeem himself in a pro day?
Sure and he prob will to some degree, but I have never seen an overly explosive or fast LB to begin with in this prospect.
How do you rate the Vikings RT free agent Loadholt?
Getting better and better. Could be worth Franchising. Excellent fit for Minny's Run First O...Peterson prob loves him. Excellent and different complement to Kalil on the other side. Might have to overpay, but I see him as a guy Minny keeps.
Colts needa lot and at the bottom of that list is probably a RB to share the load with Ballard. Is this a spot they wait a year to look at or could we see a vet FA for a min. price be brought in?
That would be very low on my list. Carter might improve as well. I say you plan the offseason with Ballard as the top guy and keep an eye out late in free agency or later rounds of the draft for a RB to add to the mix. But like you said, spend elsewhere.
Would Bowe be a good fit for NE?
To me, Bowe is a good fit any where, but he will stay in KC. Need to Franchise him.
See the 49ers making a run at Revis with their picks?
Maybe, but as much as I love Revis, this is just such a bad time to trade for him. He is coming off injury, wants a gigantic pay day and will cost you a lot in terms of draft picks. Triple Whammy!!! No Whammies No Whammies!
Would you rate Vollmer ahead of Loadholdt? I think they were drafted in the same round.
I would. More overall ability. Better in protection.
What are your thoughts on Desmond Bryant as a FA tackle?
Like him quite a bit. Just got himself in trouble off the field-which wasn't the smartest thing to do right before free agency opens. But he is one of those few guys in this league that is a true force as an interior pass rusher. And I think he can play in just about any scheme. That equals a very valuable DL
How many Wide Receivers could legitimately find themselves being selected in the 1st Round?
Allen and Patterson for sure. I bet Austin sneaks in and I could sure see Hunter going now as well. Hopkins perhaps if he blows up his Pro Day, but I will say 4 and put the O/U at 3.5
Thoughts on the young guys in Minnesota's secondary? Cook, Smith, Robinson.
I like all three quite a bit, esp Smith. Cook can be very good as well. And amazingly, Winfield is still playing great ball. A real rangey FS type would be a nice addition to that secondary, but wow, did that group get SO much better than from 2011!!
The Raiders cupboard is bare at CB. Would they be better off passing on DL and use their #3 on Milliner and using later picks to address the D-line where there is better depth?
Thier cupboard is bare in a lot of places Bro...not going to fill all those holes no matter what approach they take
Do you Bryant or someone like him or Henry Melton as a need for NE- as pass rushing tackle opposite Wilfork?
The Pats pass rush overall is a bit weak. I love C Jones though and his injury hurt them quite a bit. Nink also is adaquate off the other edge. But you are right, even if they could add a guy like Jason Jones and just use him as a rotational DL and interior pass rush specialist, that could pay off huge. All their DTs are giant space eaters.
The Browns are loaded with cap space. They are desperate for a corner...who could you see them signing? Sign a CB and go pass rusher in the draft?
They too have a lot of needs-but not nearly as many as OAK. Not sure there is a great formula either way for CLEV...but not sure Milliner will now be there-actually high doubt he is-if they are thinking that route. And there are a ton of edge pass rushers in this draft. So yes, I like your thought of going after a CB in free agency and picking best OLB in Round 1.
I took Maclin in fantasy after a certain ESPN Football Today and Chat host predicted a big year! Do you see a bounce back under Chip Kelly?
His durability worries me, but yes...but I will admit, I expected Maclin to blow up last year.
Packers should be improved on D with just players coming off injuries. Do you think Perry, Worthy and Bishop are enough to focus draft picks on RB and OL?
Although we both think RB is a huge need for GB, will they actually use a high pick or free agent $$ on that position? I really have my doubts...but love S Jax there! Great point about the returning D players and with that being the case, I could see GB adding two OL pretty high on DDay.
Did you hear that SF just traded Alex Smith to KC? Does that give Denver some competition next year?
That might be a little too optimistic, but I did hear! Actually, as soon as this chat is over I am going to write a reaction article looking at the remaing QBs on the market. Excited to dig into it.
More likely to happen again next year: Adrian Peterson runs for 2000, at least two players with 19+ sacks, Calvin Johnson receives 2000 yds, or a Baltimore/San Fransisco rematch in the Super Bowl?
None of the above of course, but I will go with 2+ players with 19 sacks. That gives me a lot of players with the ability to do so instead of counting on just one player-who could miss time with injury. And there are so many great pass rushers out there now! And the league passes a ton.
What does this mean to the market for Matt Flynn and how do you grade him?
As a high end backup QB. Limited, but effecient. But SEA is a big time contender and shouldn't let him walk on the cheap.
Monday you tweeted that you thought Joeckel and Floyd would be gone in the top 3. Does this trade solidify the Joeckel pick AND if those 2 are both gone, what do you see the Eagles doing at 4?
You have posted this 400 times! And while I commend your enthusiasm, I don't recall saying that on Twitter. Now, I think it is very possible-no doubt and Floyd would fit great with OAK. But I don't think Floyd is a great fit in Philly's new 3-4. Star might be though. Milliner would be a fine addition and I see that secondary as their biggest weak spot.
How far do you see Demontre Moore falling after his bad combine?
Like we opened the chat, he will have another chance to redeem himself. But Moore is a speed player and not a refined pass rusher...so if you question his speed, that is a big blow to his stock.
Who will be interested in Matt Cassell? Pats?
SF now? Gotta say, struggling to find a great fit off the top of my head, but see him as a caretaker backup QB...who needs one of those? Cincy?
Matt, true or false. Manti Te'o will be drafted before the end of the first round.
T...doubt BALT would psas on him
MDUB - Last time I'll ask - if you were redrafting all the 1st and 2nd year qbs, how would you rank them? luck, ck, rg3, wilson, newton?
Love all those guys-honestly. Dalton shoul be mentioned too, as should Tannehill and I will rank them like this: 1. Luck 2. CK 3. Wilson 4. RG3 5. Newton 6. Tannehill....distant 7. Dalton...but wow, picking between CK, Wilson, RG3 and Newton is brutal!
With a relatively week QB class and Brady extension, what do you think NE could get for Ryan Mallet?
Maybe a 2nd rounder...CLEV?
Good Point about the Raiders needing tons of help (other than WR I guess), Do you think T. Jones can move from RB to CB? He was great on special teams this year and did play corner in high school.
The NFL isn't a great place to take up new trades/positions. And playing RB couldn't be any more different than CB. Great special teamer for sure, but still almost always running forward and coming downhill...not in a pedal or flipping his hips or reading routes. Sounds like a desperate move to me.
Folks, I have to run and write this article. Keep an eye out for it!!
