Welcome to another hour-long chat about all things Alabama football. Plenty of things to talk about with spring practice only a few weeks away.
Alex, How long has Wendell Hudson been the coach for Alabama women's basketball team? Do you think this might be his last year?
Didn't think we'd start the chat with women's basketball, did you? Neither did I. Wendell is in his fifth season and I can't confess to know whether he'll be retained. The Tide is 12-15 and 2-12 in the SEC this season.
If you had to say the starting four defensive backs opening day who would you believe it would be, i believe collins, dix, belue, selvye cause of his speed.
You're probably looking at Landon Collins and Ha'Sean Clinton-Dix at safety and Deion Belue and Geno Smith at cornerback. Smith is too talented to keep off the field. That said, don't be shocked if Nick Perry is the starter Week 1 and not Collins. Doesn't mean he won't play significant snaps and start during the season, I just get the feeling we may see Perry first.
do you think the safety position will be better next year because i always believe lester was slow and it kind of hurt them and it was proven with his 40 time at combine
It will be much more athletic with Collins back there. Lester was a tad slow and got himself in bad position at times. That said, it's hard to substitute his kind of experience back there.
Do you see any incoming freshman having an impact like Yeldon and Cooper did last year? Putting up numbers like they did probably won't happen but at least bring that excitement?
The one I think that has the best chance to make a noticeable impact is TE/H O.J. Howard. Alabama lost its starting TE to graduation and Howard is a major improvement at the position in terms of athleticism. He's big, fast and can go up and catch the football.
Who will be the Starting Quarterback for Alabama in 2013?
Redshirt freshman Alec Morris might be considered the frontrunner because of his time in the system. He is a big kid with a strong arm and a history of competing at a high level from his time playing ball in Texas. But the most talented option could be incoming freshman Cooper Bateman. He was the third-highest ranked passer in the ESPN 150 and will have a chance to become the No. 2 quarterback this spring.
with marvin shinn out of program and danny woodson suspended what does tide receiving corp look like for next year will recruit ardarious stewart play receiver now
The moves on the roster don't really affect Ardarius. There's still so much talent in front of him with Cooper, Norwood, Ch. Jones, Bell, White, Black, Cy. Jones. Alabama is set at WR.
What do u think about the Alabama players being dismissed
It was a necessary move at the end of the day. Saban took his time and gathered all the necessary information to make the decision which is what was needed. It's unfortunate to see four young men with a future in front of them throw it away. As far as effect on the football field, I don't see much of an impact. Pettway was a young guy who could rush the passer but he wasn't going to be the difference for Alabama this season.
Bama depth chart for 2013 on both sides of ball
Goodness, that's a big question. Here's my one-deep ... QB McCarron; RB Yeldon; H Fowler, Howard; TE Vogler; LT C. Kouandjio; LG Steen; C Kelly; RG A. Kouandjio; RT Shepherd; WR Cooper, Norwood, Bell, White, Black; DE Stinson, Pagan; NG Ivory; LB Mosley, Hubbard, DePriest, Dickson; S Collins, Clinton-Dix; CB Belue, Smith.
Alex Do you think we get 5 in the first round this year ? Millner, Warmack, Williams, Fluker, Lacy ?
Probably not. I think at least one of them drops. It could be Lacy if he doesn't run well or if teams get concerns about Williams' health. Milliner and Warmack are the only locks to my way of thinking. Fluker is very appealing in the first round too, though.
Alex what is your best bet on our starting RG, RT next year ? Provided Steen goes to LG.
See below. Remember Leon Brown could make a push at RT and Alphonse Taylor is a guy coaches like at G.
Since no new DBs in school for Spring, who's most likely of Fall dbs to have an opportunity to make the field by A&M?
There are two I'll be paying attention to: Maurice Smith and Eddie Jackson. Both are very athletic and could push to play in dime.
If you had to guess the starting five OL, who would you say?
From left: C. Kouandjio, Steen, Kelly, A. Kouandjio, Shepeherd
How about the starting dline rotations-1 and 2 in 3-4
Of the redshirt dline, who's most likely to see the field in the Fall?
Too early to say past the first string right now, Dave. So much can happen during the fourth quarter program for the younger guys. Of the redshirt pass-rushers, I think Ryan Anderson has a chance to make an impact at Jack or DE. He was a guy coaches were high on last spring. Also, though he didn't RS, watch for Darren Lake to step up.
Was Slyve announcement likely due to grades rather than other issues ? Is Dillion Lee so deep in doghouse from Miami that he's headed out the door as well?
Not sure what Sylve announcement you're referring to. You might be mistaking him with Danny Woodson who was suspended for violation of team rules. And as far as Lee, there's no indication that his future at Alabama is in jeopardy. The Miami incident could be the wake up call he needed.
Who do you think is going to be the #2 QB behind AJ? Are any of the QBs on the roster transfer risks?
You'll probably see Morris as the No. 2 but if AJ were to go down all bets would be off and Bateman would have a shot. If there are going to be any transfers they're going to have to happen soon if the guy wants to get in for spring practice. Ely was thought to be leaving and still might, but we haven't heard anything definitive of late.
With Fulton possibly missing spring practice, who do you think gets the nod for the 3rd CB position in nickel?
Good question. I think we're likely to see a safety come down in nickel like Nick Perry. Alabama did that a lot last year.
How is our offensive line looking for the upcoming season? I'm looking forward to seeing how we can replace Barrett Jones at center.
It's going to be a process with three new position players and a new coach. But overall I think they'll be fine. Kelly is a talented guy coaches like to replace Jones at center.
Apologize folks, my mistake...meant Shinn(transfer) not Slyve.
I gotcha. No worries. And, no, it didn't have anything to do with off-field issues.
The receiving core is stacked. Which guys get the start and can the kid from Pennsylvania get any looks this year? Also, is there any receiving core in the country that could be better than Bamas?
I can't think of a group of receivers that will be more deep or more talented. To illustrate that fact, I don't believe we'll see that much of Robert Foster (the incoming recruit). I think that by the end of the year the top three receivers will look like this: Cooper, Norwood, Black. Bell and White will make major contributions too.
Things have been quiet on Brandon Green, how is he progessing?
Very well. He's a guy that's made improvement in the past year. Saban pointed him out at the end of last season as a good reserve O-lineman and he continues to make strides during the offseason.
What would it take to beat A&M? Or should the question be flipped? (Sorry about the previous question I submitted, I was thinking AJ was gone)
No worries. I think it's a fair question to ask on either side of the ball. Alabama has its question marks, as does Texas A&M. The Tide have to replace so much on both the offensive and defensive line and the Aggies are dealing with similar turnover, plus they're breaking in a new offensive coordinator. For Alabama to win, solving the offensive line situation and creating better contain on Manziel are the keys. For Texas A
Oline competition probably the most fun to watch in Spring...what's your early prediction for those openings as well as the number 1 backup like McCullough was in '11?
I'm glad you asked it that way because the frontrunners (C. Kouandjio, Steen, Kelly, A. Kouandjio, Shepherd) are not all sure things. Leon Brown and Brandon Hill will try to win the RT spot and Alphonse Taylor could make some noise at guard. Maybe keep an eye on Brandon Greene as a McCullough type.
Do you think Derrick Henry makes a splash this year? Word on the street is he is killing it in the gym and learning the playbook.
He is doing work in the weight room -- him and O.J. Howard. Henry could make an impact but I don't think he'll make such a rise that he becomes the No. 2 tailback. People are forgetting just how good Kenyan Drake was last season. Henry will get some carries but let's not get so carried away this early.
Where does John Fulton fit in?
Somewhere under the category of "Question mark." He's dealing with a turf toe injury that could keep him out for some of the spring. Look for some young guys to try and step up, especially Geno Smith. I believe he'll be the No. 2 cornerback by Week 1.
I am not high on Perry and Sunseri in the secondary at all,can Collins or Jarrick Williams win a starting job?
Collins has a good shot to win Lester's spot. Perry will play and I don't think he was quite as bad as people made him out to be. He's maybe the most pure free safety Alabama has. Sunseri on the other hand is a niche player. He's a Troy Polamalu (sp?) type that succeeds when he can play in space and not one-on-one.
How are Hart, Fowler and White progressing from there injuries?
Apparently they're all doing fairly well and are expected to be able to practice during the spring. The only guys that are questionable to practice are Norwood and Fulton.
Why is Shinn leaving ?
Playing time. He can read the depth chart and knows he's not going to start.
Alex, does Alabama not have the coolest strength and conditioning coach in the nation in Scott Cochran?
Maybe ha. Cochran is a character. Dude loves his job and his new $9 million facility.
Any other players who have decided not to continue playing football since they may have already graduated (like Ming)?
Nothing official yet. As with every year, we'll probably see a who opt not to come back.
You don't think Jarrick Williams will be the 5th DB ?
He very well could be. He looked good in bowl practice and needs a strong spring to get some notice.
I think D. Tomlinson is going to be a beast on the DL. You ?
I know coaches are very high on him. My concern is that he's a little slim to play in a 3-4 at 266. That's 20 pounds lighter than Stinson and 30 less than Dial.
Is 2013-2014 a make or break season for Anthony Grant? Or is he already firmly on the hot seat if the Tide don't make a late season run into the tournament?
I don't get the sense that he's on the hot seat. They haven't been winning pretty, but they've been winning. My biggest concern if I'm the AD is the apathy around the program. The attendance is laughable sometimes. While winning is the No. 1 concern, you also want to have a product people care about.
You think Jonathan Allen will make a big impact next year ?
He's in good position to. With Pettway gone, the door is open. He's a talented guy and with Alabama looking for pass-rushers, he's an option.
Any word on Brandon hill's latest weight loss since his 16 pounds?
Nothing since but that initial number was a good sign. He said he wanted to drop a lot more and will need to if he wants to play tackle.
What's the strength of schedule like for 2013?
It's OK but not strong. The first two games will be big against Va Tech and TAMU, but Colorado State and Georgia State aren't exactly moving the needle. Neither are Kentucky and Chattanooga.
You have one game to win , Who you got Bear Bryant or Nick Saban ?
If we're talking about a bowl game with weeks to prepare give me Saban. If we're talking about a regular season game I'll take Bryant. There, I didn't offend anyone with my answer, did I? Probably.
So, gun to your head, do you pick Bama to repeat? Or is A&M or Florida too tough? Maybe Ohio St?
Gun to my head? A tad dramatic, don't you think? Well, if it's my life on the line I say they don't repeat. It's hard enough to win one title and even harder to repeat. Now fathom the odds of three in a row. I wouldn't bet my life on it. Can Alabama repeat? Of course, but history says it's not likely. If it's not UA, I think Florida has a very good shot and Ohio State could be in the title game with its rather uninspiring schedule.
Do you think that alabama will have another break out freshman? If so who do you think it will be?
I do. There's been one the last few years and I think O.J. Howard will be the man this season. He's a physical freak who could give defenses major headaches.
Hate to say it, but that's all the time we've got. If you didn't get your question answered, don't fret. I'll be back at the same time and place next week. Too long to wait? Head over to TideNationESPN.com for all the latest Alabama news. You can find the forum there and fire away. Cheers!
