Do you think that Danica Patrick will win Races in the Sprint Cup Series this season since she finished 8th in the Daytona 500?
No. If you look at history, what happens in the Daytona 500 does not reflect how a driver does in the season or career. Average drivers sometimes win the Daytona 500 and finish in the top 10. In case you didn't notice, JJ Yeley and Michael McDowell were top 10 on Sunday.
How long do we have to deal with the Danica circus? She got an article for not finishing the NNS race Saturday, but Johanna Long did not. The media didn't say a peep about Jennifer Jo Cobb racing on Friday. ESPN barely mentioned Courtney Force's win this weekend. Shoot, you guys never even mentioned Milka Duno starting on the front row and leading laps in the ARCA race at Daytona. Is is too much to ask you guys to spread the love and cover some of the other females in motorsports instead of just the one that gives you guys the most ratings??
I hear you, but this is a phenomenon that has a life of its own. Yes, the media contributes to that. But Danica won the pole, finished eighth and was third with a lap to go in the 500. You have to give her props for that.
When Hinton said this in Turn 4, ""Why are we even talking about such a silly little comment on a professional sports journalism website? We are being sucked down the vortex", was he taking a cheap shot at the rest of your for your over obssesive coverage of everything Danica?? Has to be since you guys keep talking about stuff that 65% of fans said they don't care about.
He was talking about treating what drivers say on Twitter as news. Unfortunately, in this day, that is an avenue we have to work within.
Should we go ahead and write off "New Kyle" this after since it is obvious the 2012 issues are still there leading to arrogant interview answers?
Being intense when you lose a chance to win the biggest race of the year is not a fair way to judge a person's overall behavior.
Did Sprint Cup Champion Brad give Logano a lecture for costing him the 500?
Brad told me he thought Joey and Hamlin were doing what they felt they had to in order to win the race. He didn't blame Logano at all.
Now that Brad sees that Joey cost him a win, do you think Brad has Penske find another driver?
Brad didn't say that.
Will I ever win a minor league race again??
Yes. Maybe this week.
Is Kyle so hard on his cars that he blows two engines out of 3 this past weekend?
Matt Kenseth lost a JGR engine as well and last I looked he doesn't have a rep for blowing them.
Did you know it has been over a year since the master of the minors won a truck or NW race?
Oh, you guys are out in full force today.
Do you see the outlaw Dillon Brothers as the best brother team out there today?
Rowdy Brad took a car damaged by Kyles wreck and ran up front with it. Is he the best wheel man out there today?
Think that shows with the new car you still can go fast without a car in perfect aerodynamic shape.
How about that Dale Jr? He said he liked the new car and he was one of the few with the guts to make a move. Second place isnt too bad!
Not shabby. He really seemed happy after the race.
You never did tell us what kind of shoes Logano wore during media day!!
Wow, that seems like a year ago now. Honestly, I have forgotten. If it pops in my head, I'll post it later in the chat.
Any updates on You Know Who's plans for this weekend?
Think you know who is driving the No. 10 GoDaddy.com car.
Who do think will be wearing the most expensive shoes this weekend?
What would have to happen for you to consider a race "boring"?
Fair question. The best so far today. If one car got so far ahead that it ran away with the race and the outcome never was in doubt.
If Danica gets bit by a rattle snake this weekend, who sucks out the poison: You, Brant James, Blount, Fryer, Gluck, or Porkass?
I won't be there. Get the weekend off to rip tile out of my bathroom wall.
My boy still seems to be a little upset about what Denny said after Daytona. Do you have any words of wisdom for him?
After hearing Kyle Busch complaing last week it's clear he hasn't changed a bit. He still sounded just as whiny and bitter as he always has.
I didn't hear him complaining. I heard him frustrated not to have a chance to win, but that's understandable.
How's your sunburn? You described to us in great detail and it made me worried about you. I love all your articles and would greatly miss your contributions if something bad happened.
Peeled and healed.
I find it sad that grown men are arguing like little teenage girls on Twitter. What happened to good old days of fisticuffs? Your boy Logano could toughen up a little.
Logano wasn't the one that started this on Twitter. I liked his response, though. And welcome to the 21st century with this kind of fighting.
Newt, I was shaking my head after reading your article on why the Daytona 500 wasn't boring. The race was a dud, plain and simple. Yes nobody got hurt, but that shouldn't decide whether a race is good or not. Racing is a dangerous sport and fans assume risk when they purchase their tickets. The focus should have been on the lack of passing and the "follow the leader" driving. If you weren't on the outside line you were toast.
It was different. Reminded me of old school racing at Daytona. Did you realize that only Pearson and Petty were on the lead lap when they wrecked battling going for the win in 1976. That race is called one of the best ever. I found more than enough to keep me intrigued on Sunday. Was it craziness? No, but not every race needs to be.
Where is the article for Michael McDowell and J.J. Yeley, the true cinderella underdogs of the Daytona 500? They finished in the top 10 with much worse equipment than you-know-who and got zero press for it.
As a NASCAR writer with decades of experience, why do you always make the mistake of putting too much stock into how a driver performs in a restrictor plate race. Any casual fan knows plate races are hardly accurate reflections of how a season will play out.
Think if you read my comments I don't put a lot of stock in doing well in the Daytona 500. Michael Waltrip is the perfect example. He went 400 and something races without a win, then won two 500s in three years. Never was a real championship contender.
Hey David I just wanted to give you props for choosing Regan Smith as your darkhorse for the 500! Does this mean he's going to do just as well the rest of the season?
He won't be running a full Cup season for Phoenix, but I suspect he'll contend for the NW title. He appeared ready to win Saturday's race until the last lap craziness. And thanks.
Hi Newt, were you impressed with Rowdy's insightful comments from the booth during last Thursdays Daytona ARCA race?
Sorry, I missed them. What did you think?
Smith provided a good result for Finch at Daytona. Did he prove that a level headed driver is able to be successful with the equipment Finch gets from Hendrick?
Well, Kurt won a NW race at Daytona for Phoenix Racing and was in contention to win few more. What Kurt did at Sonoma with a damaged car was phenomenal. Not going to lure me into bashing Kurt on that one.
New season and Shrub blows another engine. Is he too hard on his equipment early in the race causing it to expire before the end of the race?
Again, two JGR engines blew. Do I believe Kyle races all out every lap and that sometimes bites him? Yes. But they have talented people building engines that are expected to hold together.
Do you know what happened to Bobby Labonte Sunday? He was running in 6th but then suddenly he was back in the 20's. FOX didn't say anything about it. Did he try to pass and get shuffled?
Probably the same thing that happened to Danica at the end. She was sixth and then dropped back to 8th. Gordon fell back too. Think he finished 20th. That is plate racing.
Hey Newt, What did Jeremy say?, Brad just got a talking to when voicing his opinion. Do you think NASCAR has a pick and choose double standard? NASCAR should stand up to their transparency statement or is this just another one of their double secret suspension. If we, as fans we would like the whole version so we can decide as the Nascar Nation on this subject. Thanks for the chats.
All I will say is it was a racial slur. What we've found today that makes this crazy is it was an MTV reporter and he was just helping this reporter find Johanna Long's NW hauler when he said what he said. As far as he knew, he wasn't being interviewed. That is all I can say. Thanks
Dont worry Newt, We are on this like Tony Stewart on a double cheese burger at B King. Harvey seys hi.
Making me hungry.
How did you Feel about the Nationwide Series Crash at Daytona where 33 Fans were Injured?
Was Bubba Wallace the victim of of Clement's racial slur?
Not that I know of.
Dang it Dave, quit feilding all these troll's stupid comments and lets talk RACIN" lol
I'm trying. Sometimes I post them before I realize what they are.
Guess who??!! Biffle. The Biff has definitely been in the hunt during the first three races...do you see him breaking through a checkered flag soon (maybe in Phoenix)? Let's get it straight, Biff is the real deal, brother!
I'd stick with Johnson at Phoenix. I'd give Biff a better shot at Vegas.
Hi Newt, doesn't 2nd place is 1st placed loser apply to Dale Junebug's Daytona finish?
So what are you saying.
What Speedway do you think that Danica Patrick will very slow at Maybe either DNQ or Maybe use a Provisional at?
Don't think she will need provisional. Bristol will be tough.
NASCAR " We want the driver to speak their minds" BUT if WE dont like it WE will strike you down to the full extense of the rule book. Oh, Those other guys comments that were swept under the rug are just the fault of the men behind our curtain (NASCAR).
I hear you. Nobody ever said NASCAR wasn't a dictatorship.
Was that sugarless gum you were chewing when you were sitting behind Bruton?
hey. My family are huge Denny Hamlin and Kasey Kahne fans, with the next race being at Phoenix what do you think their odds of winning is? Denny Hamlin did win the race last year so does that mean that he has high expectations to try to be the repeat winner of the race?
Denny usually is strong at Phoenix, so I'd expect to see him be tough again this weekend. Kasey will have a fast car. He just needs to stay focused on not making mistakes.
with recent news of the olympics changing it's sports line up and NASCAR seeing a increase in international drivers is there any chance that NASCAR could become a olympic sport in the near future? Or at least one part of the olympic triathlon?
Nope. They don't like sports that depend on motors in the Olympics.
Plus, not enough countries to participate.
Is it just me or do you dislike the new layout on nascar.com?
I don't comment on other people's sites.
Did anyone ever consider that Nascar, by listening to the fans, might be ruining the racing product. I wish they would just leave it alone and let it evolve on its own. I loved the tandem. It was the natural evolution.
You are right in that the governing body listens to the fans more than any other I've been around. But when your sport depends on fans and interest they have to listen to a degree. You may be on to something, though.
What did you think of jimmie johnson & 48 team daytona 500 harlem shake video?
Love it. Still thought Gordon's was slightly better. But if they'd shown the part where JJ was on top of the hauler, my vote might swing to the 48.
During the week between Phoenix and Las Vegas, do the team haulers drive back to North Carolina after the Phoenix race and then drive all the way to Las Vegas? Or they meet halfway to switch cars?
Many of them meet other haulers with the Vegas car halfway or a part of the way back and then swap out.
Will Joey Logano get his revenge on Denny Hamlin and Clint Bowyer for insulting him on Twitter?
David,I know Chase Elliott is running a limited NCWTS schedule this season and turns 18 in November. Will he be back in the Truck series next year or full-time Nationwide? Thanks!
I would hope he'd be in one of the top three series fulltime. The kid is talented.
David,Do you think Trevor Bayne will finally get a full-time Cup ride in 2014?
David,Who is the better Dillon? Austin or Ty?
Good question. Many will tell you Ty. I look forward to the day they're both in Cup so we can judge for ourselves.
David,Any truth to the rumor that RCR and Dodge could partner up in 2014?
Not from what I have been told. But things change.
David,If you could pick one young driver who you think will win Cup championships one day, who would it be? I'm taking Ty Dillon.
I'll go with Ryan Blaney.
David,Trevor Bayne has struggled quite a bit since winning the Daytona 500 in 2011. Do you think he has the ability to constantly compete at the highest level?
I do. This is the first year he's gotten the opportunity to run a fulltime NW schedule. Being in that car every week will surely help consistency. He needs that in Cup as well.
David,Do you envision Trevor Bayne going full-time Cup next year? Possibly by staying in #21 or bringing back the #6?
If he goes fulltime, it likely will be with Roush since Roush owns his contract. It all depends on sponsorship
David,What kind of future do you think Ben Kennedy has in the sport as a driver?
Not familiar enough to make a judgment.
should there be a concern with the Joe gibbs racing toyotas
There has been a dependability issue for many years, which is why I'm sure Kyle Busch gets frustrated. He's been bittern in the Chase several times by it. It's still one of the top organizations in Cup, but you can't win championships blowing engines like that.
D.W. was so unprofessional sunday. he kept making excuses for danica, i had to turn it off
Sorry, I was focused on drivers on my scanner and didn't hear what he said.
The 48 strategy at DIS was interesting. Do you think other teams will have enough confidence in their driver and setup to forgo drafting practice in the future?
Much of the strategy was based on learning as much as they could about the new car. I'd be willing to bet they'll practice drafting more as they get to know the car more. But nobody ever said Knaus was dumb. Read my column today.
Hi Newt, are your hearing that Bud stays at RCR and on the #3 with Dillon since Bud needs a young driver more in line with their demographic sort of like when they quit Dale for Kahne?
Not hearing that. Talked to Harvick the other day and he's doing a lot for Bud that Bud likes. Planning to write a column on that, probably for next week. But one could argue that Dillon would reach or relate to more the younger demographic the sponsor wants.
And all Childress has said is Bud hasn't told him anything.
Hi Newt, after the tragedy suffered by JGR with the blown TRD engines at Daytona do the team leaders like Rowdy and Matt ever call team meetings to rallye the troops and help them get over the devastation?
Way too early for that. Daytona is its own animal. The season starts this week.
You get one in your prime Chad Knaus or Dale Inman (or insert a third option here). Who do take as your crew chief?
As much as I like Dale, I'd go wth Chad or Ray Evernham. They were able to improve cars in an era when it was much tougher to get cheating past NASCAR.
Dave, I have not seen an article as to what kind of psychotherapy drivers have to go through after a bad wreck like Larson did and for lack of better term go ricky-bobby back out on the track. I know myself I would need a few quiet hours and more than a few beers to shake that one off. How or who in Nascar determines if a driver or drivers are prepared to go back out there ? Is there a series of tests like a concusion ? Or some form of doctors reviews ?
They are tested for concussions, but the mental aspect of it I would assume is done on an individual need or basis. Most of these guys understand the risks before they get in the car and are mentally prepared to handle them. That's another reason why I'd argue they are athletes. Takes a lot of mental toughness to do that.
Rowdy is only 37 pts. behind Jimmie in the cup standings. How many races do you predict before the #18 is top 5 in the standings?
May take until May. Or mid-summer.
More engine woes for JGR....is a continuation of a bad trend? Or are potential title contenders like Kenseth, Hamlin and Bowyer going to have to deal with what happened Sunday sporadically throughout the year?
I'd look at this as a more isolated case.
Was the cheering and celebration in the grandstands when Danica took the lead like they used to do when Junebug would lead a lap?
That or more. Pretty crazy.
What is your feeling about the engine problems at JGR? Sign of trouble for this year?
Not reading too much into it. A plate race where the engines are on edge.
In your opinion does Dale Jr have another year like last year or will his year more closely resemble '01 or '10? or will it be even better than last year?
I'll go with more like last year, or better.
Do you think this is the year where we may actually see short fields?
Potentially. Only 43 Cup cars slated for Phoenix. California will be the big test.
Since Danica has proven herself and is likely in Sprint Cup for the long-term do you think she will develop a fan following similar to what Dale Junebug has?
Maybe she already has. And if you are going to ask multiple questions please include another driver.
Since Kyle's TRD motors are built and maintained in California, while the teams are on this West Coast swing do you think Rowdy will meet with the TRD engineers to help them solve the engine gremlins?
Doubt Kyle will, but would bet Lee White and other top Toyota execs do.
Is it true that there wasn't anything wrong with Danica's NNS car. She lost the draft so she thought something was wrong with the car?
Go back and read her transcript. This link may help. http://espn.go.com/espnw/more-sports/8978285/espnw-danica-patrick-nationwide-race-ends-early
Hi Newt, during 500 driver intros Rowdy totally ignored and didn't even acknowledge Harvick while the other driver chatted. Is Rowdy still displeased with Harvicks behavior from back at Darlington a few years ago?
They really don't care for each other.
Knaus-Johnson, Johnson-Knaus. 2 halves of the same coin. Now that Chad is catching up to JJ on life balance, the best may be yet to come. On the other hand,Knaus's contract is up in 2014. Will that be the end to the dynamic duo run?
As long as they are performing at this level I believe you'll see them together.
Hi David, seems like Brad's mouth is constantly getting him in trouble with the competition and now with Chairman France. Has Mr. Penske warned him to shut up and drive instead of running his mouth to the media?
I didn't see anything wrong with what Keselowski said. He voiced his opinion, one others have had, one I have had. That he called out Brian France and Lesa specifically probably got him to the principal's office. But let's hope he continues to push his views and the sport to improve.
Why is 230 too fast for stock cars, but not too fast for Indy Cars? If taking off the plates would separate the cars, it would seem to make the racing safer. What are the differences that cause people to say that 230 is too fast in a stock car?
Different animal. And if stock cars ran that fast at Daytona I'm not sure you could keep them out of the fence. The racing is fine at 195 or so. I can't tell with the naked eye the difference.
Of the cars running at the finish, was there any team more disappointed with the 500 than Gordon and the #24 guys?
They were pretty bummed. Felt they had a good shot to win it. But in plate racing you see guys fall back like that a lot. Just didn't expect it from him. But the racing was different, so maybe he'll try something different the next time.
So who brought the Jeremy Clements story out to the public if his comments were said in a private conversation.
They were said to an MTV reporter with a NASCAR pr person there. Not sure which turned him in.
Thanks Newt for the great chats!
You're welcome. Sorry I couldn't get to more. Ask me on Twitter at @Dnewtonespn and I'll try to get to them. Have a great weekend.
