Good afternoon everyone...let's get this partaaaayyy started!
Any word on 'the Old Guy', stats man?
Craig, I'm trying to find out. Ken was a friend of mine and actually came over my way so we could do lunch last year. I haven't heard a thing and fear for the worst because his cell phone has been disconnected. He had some physical issues so I just don't know. I'm hoping someone in his Virginia Connection league could tell us something. There's a team there called "Goodbye Ken" and that makes me worry.
It's been a year now, is my suspension over?
Good Afternoon Mark, I took a pants down spankin' @ Daytona! I'm a fan of Kenseth bit not a fan of T(u)RD. I know the engines @ the plate races are a different animal but I'm nervous about them. I want to have the 11 and 18 on my team this week @ Phoenix. It's a short race so they SHOULD be ok. Will we see the Toyota guys keep practice laps to a minimum? The history of their stuff blowing up is repeating itself! Your thoughts? Thanks, Bill
You got spanked at Daytona...how about my sparkling 53 points with my highest finisher Jeff Gordon in 20th..Stewart and Harvick wrecked early..Kenseth lost an engine and then Burton tried to knock the wall down...Un-bo-lieveable! I think you hit on it that the plate motors are a different animal..and other Toyotas didn't have a problem so they might have been running a little more conservative..Should be okay for Phoenix..
Mark, hope you are doing well sir. I'm on Spring Break so enjoying some downtime. Daytona was brutal. None of my teams did well. This week on Y! I have: 11-18-55-17 and on the ESPN I have: 11-55-56-14-39. Think I have pretty solid lineups? Also, I know we are kind of a family here, so I was wondering if everyone could say a prayer for my Mom that all of her tests come back well! Would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
Again, no what you're saying about Daytona being brutal...I like your Yahoo team because I think Stenhouse could be a real dark horse. He hasn't run a Cup race at Phoenix, but third two straight in Nationwide and in six Nationwide starts there worst finish is ninth..On your ESPN team I worry about Stewart who has been up and down on equal basis at Phoenix with 11 top-10s in 22 starts.....as for your mom count on us to be sending a prayer with her name on it...Have a good time on Spring break...and this would be a good time to be hunting for a new GF right? lol
Guru TRD seems to be starting 2013 with engine problems like all of 2012. Do you see problems at Phoenix?
I'd like to think and so would they that Daytona was a fluke...shouldn't be problem at Phoenix...not a long race or one that has shown itself to be hard on engines in the past.
Kenseth ran good as a "lame duck" last season. Will Harvick be out of the car early if Budweiser is going to leave Childress and go with Harvick? Thanks, Bill
No, I see him finishing out the season no matter what.
Here by the way is my pre-race top 30 for Phoenix....1.Denny Hamlin2.Kevin Harvick3.Kyle Busch4.Jimmie Johnson5.Brad Keselowski6.Kasey Kahne7.Ryan Newman8.Greg Biffle9.Clint Bowyer10.Jeff Gordon11.Mark Martin12.Kurt Busch13.Matt Kenseth14.Tony Stewart15.Martin Truex, Jr.16.Paul Menard17.Joey Logano18.Carl Edwards19.Marcos Ambrose20.Dale Earnhardt, Jr.21.Juan Pablo Montoya22.Aric Almirola23.Ricky Stenhouse, Jr.24.Jeff Burton25.Bobby Labonte26.Danica Patrick27.Jamie McMurray28.A.J. Allmendinger29.Casey Mears30.Travis Kvapil
Mark at sites with salary change after phoenix how do you see Jr, Danica and Stenhouse doing or do I take the cap hit with Shrub, Harvick and Stewart?
Chuck, I don't see Junior, Danica or Stenhouse setting the world on fire at Phoenix..Junior could possibly run top-10, Danica and Stenhouse are top-20 with a slight chance to run top-15...Shrub can win it and so could Harvick...Stewart, again, up and down at Phoenix..I kept Harvick and Gordon from Daytona but traded Stewart for Newman..Kenseth for Hamlin, and then Burton for Martin..
Mark, Should last fall's race at Phoenix be a good indicator for Sunday? Thanks, Bill
The cars are different, but I think you can look at both of last year's race as a good indication of which teams and drivers have the place figured out. It's why a guy like Menard is a sleeper this week with a ninth and 12th place finish a year ago..
Mark - Do you see Carl turning it around this year or was his disaster at Speed Weeks a sign that he is going to struggle to make the Chase? It's strange seeing him ranked well outside the top 5-10 cars on a regular basis. Glad you're back for another year with us in here.
Jim, I guess we have to take a wait and see attitude on Carl. I think next week at Vegas is going to be a very big test. If he struggles to be competitive there it just might be a long year. What I'm anticipating, however, is that veteran crew chief Jimmie Fennig will have a positive influence on Carl performance and can help rebuild Carl's confidence. There's no reason this team can't win..it has equipment and Carl has the talent..just have to figure out the right formula..If that happens quick or not that is what we're all trying to figure out.
Wasn't Phoenix re-surfaced between the 2 events last year?
It's been three events since the track was reconfigured Bill...It was after the winter race in 2011 track was resurfaced and reconfigured.
Who do you think will win the Dollar General 200 & the Subway Fresh Fit 500 at Phoenix?
Chris, I like Kyle Busch on Saturday to finally win another Nationwide Series race and teammate Denny Hamlin or Kevin Harvick to win Sunday.
Are we going to see top tier drivers who did badly at Daytona drive more cautiously so as not to fall back so hard in the point standings?
That's possible Bill, but I doubt guys like Stewart, Harvick, and Kenseth will let one bad race really get into their heads...Kyle Busch might be thinking here we go again but he should be loaded for bear and thinking more about getting it turned around than what happened at Daytona...Should Toyota, however, suffer a couple more engine failures then some of their drivers might be going oh-oh.
Do you think that Danica Patrick will win a Sprint Cup Series Race this season since She Finished 8th in the Daytona 500?
I think by what she did at Daytona, Danica could be in the mix at Daytona and Talladega...I also think she'll be a little more competitive on the road courses...Will she win? Probably not, but she'll show improvement and will do better than some people think. Her performance at Daytona was rock solid and she had a legit chance to win,but inexperience with drafting cost her. Personally, I think if she had moved down late in the race when Jimmie Johnson was bringing the inside train forward for the first time she might have put herself in position to win.
There are bonus pts for qualifying in the Y! game. Who do you think will be in the front 2 rows? Thanks! ~Dan
Dan..that's a toughie..with the new cars and big spoilers speeds are going to be up because the cars will have a lot more grip...Off the top of my head Kyle, Hamlin, Kahne and Johnson come to mind first.
Mark Dillion is entered in the 33 for Phoenix. Joe Falk is listed as the owner, is this a RCR car with RCR pit crew or should we just stay away?
When Dillon runs he's in an RCR car..so that would be no reason to stay away from him..Falk is listed so there's a provisional to fall back on if necessary.
Mark, I too fear the worst for Ken. At the end of last season, he did mention some surgeries for this time of year and that he might still be in the hospital recovering if we didn't hear from him. Your comment about his cell phone worries me though. I am keeping up hope that he is still in recovery, I have really enjoyed his stats and insight over the years. Do you happen to know where he gets all of his information? Specifically the average speeds? Is all of that available on Nascar.com and Jayski's? I will have to work harder now.
I'd like to figure out how to get a message out to whoever is the leader this year of Virginia Connection because that was Ken's league and that person would be keeping it going for him..Ken never did tell me his formula for putting that stuff to together so I don't have a clue where he got it...maybe I should take a hard look at one of those from last year and could possibly figure it out..He would just e-mail or call me from time to time to rag me about beating me that particular week or whatever..good guy.
Thanks for the answer. BTW, you need to get those podcasts advertised better. Just found them today and loving those.
Thanks Bill...also please go to goprn.com and pick up shorter version everyday with my PRN Garage Pass show.
Since Danica moved to NASCAR I have always thought it would be great for the sport we love in terms of viewers, sponsors, etc...I just hope the FOX broadcast doesn't turn into the Danica show every week. She deserved a lot of attention in Daytona, but hopefully we don't lose sight of 5 Time and the others out there...
You can't blame Fox if make sure to cover Danica a little differently than some others...However, she will only get the extra coverage, like Daytona, when she does something noteworthy so I don't see a danger in Jimmie Johnson being overshadowed. She is giving the sport a much needed shot in the arm.
I don't get annoyed with the telecast. I listen to the scanners via TRACPASS then switch to the radio broadcast at times. Scanner listening makes the race fun. RACE BUDDY was great Sat.
Good to hear...get it?..lol
Does anyone out there know Ken's last name?
Thanks for the prayers Mark, much appreciated. And yes the girlfriend hunt is going pretty well. lol One of the girls is a cycling instructor. Also, like the Stenhouse pick too. Think he can top-10 at PHX?
If she's a cycling instructor you're going to have to get in shape...can't hold your breath sucking in your gut forever right? lol...Stenhouse would be nice a top-15...have a hard time picturing him top-10.
Was Ken on any of the other ESPN NASCAR chats? I also recall his input here.
He had the Virginia Connection league, was a regular here and had a weekly newsletter...I'm hoping someone can give me a last name and I can find out what happened to him.
I've got to run..but we'll do it again race day from Phoenix at noon eastern time..please join me then and check out the daily Jayski Podcasts with yours truly and follow on twitter at @GuruGarrow...Sad to say but must "The Guru has left the building!"
