Chat with Rich Cimini

Rich Cimini
  (4:03 PM)

Greetings, all. Sorry for the change of schedule. Hectic day. Let's get started.

IRA (Staten Island)

Rich, You know were i stand with Revis so lets talk about QB's. Quinn makes sense beccause of Lee and the price. The Jets have money tied up in Sanchez and Quinn will be cheap so they can sign another veteran too if they want. I think Moore's price might be to high so Cambell is more realistic. Your thoughts?

Rich Cimini
  (4:04 PM)

Ira, I think they'll sign Garrard and another vet. Both cheap. They have too much $$ tied up in Sanchez to go crazy in free agency.

Lenny (NY)

Why not trade Cromartie, keep Revis, and use the money saved by trading Cro on resigning Landry or signing a WR?

Rich Cimini
  (4:06 PM)

Interesing question, Lenny. I know Rex would rather trade Cro and apply the money to Revis, but it's not that simple. I don't see them signing Landry. Too much coin.

Ben (NY)

Rich, any chance the Jets take a chance on John Abraham? I know he is on the downside of his career but why not try him as a situational pass rusher?

Rich Cimini
  (4:06 PM)

Don't see it. It was a bitter divorce in '06 and I don't see Abe coming back.

Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)

Do you think that the Jets should Select LSU CB Tyrann Mathis for their first pick of the 2013 NFL Draft?

Rich Cimini
  (4:07 PM)

Sure, why not? Then pick Te'o in the second. Would give us plenty to write about. I jest, of course.

Rich (New Jersey)

Hi Rich, Since the 49ers dealt Smith and do have a lot of draft choices (15 choices), will the Jets be willing to trade Revis to SF for a couple of high draft choices or are they just going to play a wait & see game?

Rich Cimini
  (4:08 PM)

First of all, no one knows if the 49ers will offer anything for Revis. If they offered 31 and 34, the Jets would think about it.

43 years is enough (Great Neck NY)

Your opinion of Idzik thus far? Will he value draft picks more than Mr. T apparently did?

Rich Cimini
  (4:09 PM)

Can't form an opinion yet because he hasn't done anything. I think he'll be deliberate and build through the draft. Don't expect the usual splash.

Andy (Hartford CT)

Terry Bradway got pretty beat up on Twitter yesterday when they opened up for comments. (Pretty funny) Do you see him fitting in with Idzik? Or will he likely get the boot after the draft?

Rich Cimini
  (4:10 PM)

All I know is, Terry is instrumental right now in the draft process. Idzik is relying on him -- a lot.

D (NNJ)

What positions do you think the Jets address in first 2 rounds? I was thinking OLB in 1st and then either a Safety or Corner in 2nd. Your thoughts?

Rich Cimini
  (4:10 PM)

OLB and S are top priorities. Also RB and WR. And QB.

Jack (Jersey)

What's never been fully explained is the reason WHY Tannenbaum extended Sanchez after a poor season. It's been speculated that it was a make up for pursuing Manning, but if that was the sole reason, that's an awful way of doing business and doesn't help the view that Sanchez is being babied and coddled by the Jets. Thoughts? Insights?

Rich Cimini
  (4:11 PM)

Tanny wanted cost certainty, never thinking Sanchez would decline as much as he did. Of course, they could've helped him by giving him somebody to throw to.

John (Boston College)

DON'T TRADE REVIS. You don't trade once in a decade player for pennies on the dollar, especially when (1) you're not expecting to compete this coming season AND will be in much better cap shape following this year and (2) you have an abhorrent history of drafting players, to put it nicely. Even if they get 31 & 34 and then some from the Niners, NOTHING makes me think they could put it to good to great use. You. don't. trade. him.

Rich Cimini
  (4:13 PM)

All valid points, John, except you're not talking pennies on the dollar. You're talking maybe a difference of $4M per year.

Mike (Boca Raton)

Hey Rich, What do you think the chances of the Jets getting Flynn are? He's looked really good in his limited playing time, incluidng that game in New England. Also, do you see Warmack getting a look at 9? We need a pair of guards and he might be the best player available at that point. Thanks

Rich Cimini
  (4:14 PM)

If they wanted Flynn, I think they would've made a move by now. They're taking the cheap route at QB. Warmack is the best prospect in the draft, some scouts say. Personally, I'd have a hard time taking a guard at 9.

Mike (Brooklyn)

you talked about how the Jets should wait until the regular season to maybe trade Revis but at that point wouldn't most teams just think "hey we will just wait till the end of the year to grab him" I know the nightmare is Revis headed to the Patriots....

Rich Cimini
  (4:14 PM)

Relax, Mike, that nightmare won't happen.

Kman (NYC)

Hey Rich, Great coverage at the combine. What do you think; Dion Jordan, Jarvis Jones, or Mingo at 9?

Rich Cimini
  (4:15 PM)

Thanks, Kman. I could see Jordan or Jones, if the medical checks out. Some mocks have Mingo to the Jets, but I don't see it. Too small for Rex's scheme.

jj (orangeburg,ny)

i got a feeling drew stanton is a diamond in the rough!what are the chances he swallows his pride and signs with jets with a promise to be given a chance to start?

Rich Cimini
  (4:16 PM)

About the same as Favre coming out of retirement to play.

Robert S (Sarasota, FL)

Rick, We missed you doing a chat last week. What are chances Jets would be interested in Michael Turner or dare I say John Abraham? They can fill needs and an opportunity to to get them on the cheap if they are released today.

Rich Cimini
  (4:17 PM)

Turner isn't a scheme fit in the West Coast O. The Jets need a young Abe, not the current Abe.

Tony (Richmond, CA)

Do you think the Jets will make a deal with the Niners for Revis given San Francisco's high number of draft picks and the multiple areas of need for NY? Or is this just the usual offseason posturing/drama from Darrelle and the Jets?

Rich Cimini
  (4:18 PM)

Usual posturing. The 49ers have the ammo, for sure, but they have only $1M in cap room. They'll get another $7M or so when the Smith trade is finalized, but that's still tight. Plus, they'll have to do Kaepernick in a year.

Roger (Honolulu)

Love your work Rich! Why can't the Jets make a reasonable offer to Revis of say $12M/yr for 4 years, sweeten the pot by guaranteeing the whole contract and put the onus on him to see if he can get a better deal by the trade deadline?

Rich Cimini
  (4:19 PM)

I don't think Revis is hung up on guarantees as much as he is avg per year. I don't think $12M will get it done.

Mikey (Long Island, NY)

Rich, great work so far. I'm not just brown nosing; but I do appretiate your work. You come from both angles and your not one to dip your nose in buisness. You only report what you have to report, your not the type to snoop around for drama. With that being said, is anyone in the Jets organization high on QB Tyler Bray? He has a big strong arm and is very accurate on short routes and is not afriad to rip it; I see a little Joe Flacco in him. What are your thoughts on him? Do you see the Jets grabbing him in 2nd-3rd round? Great work and I look forward to continue to follow you Rich!

Rich Cimini
  (4:22 PM)

Thanks for the kind words, Mikey. You sure you're not brown nosing? lol. Bray can throw it, for sure, but he has some off-the-field concerns. Teams will have to investigate that. I don't see them taking him in 2nd or 3rd.

Oz (CT)

Do we know for sure that the Jets and Revis's agents haven't been having conversations ? I'd think that the Jets would have at least discussed the parameters of a long term deal before making any decision. And as far as I can tell, none of the "sources" are Idzik, the agents or Revis himself. Don't you think they're talking, but just not publicly ?

Rich Cimini
  (4:23 PM)

No, they're not talking. But it's early -- still almost two months to the draft. If it's April 1 and they're still not talking, then there's a problem.

kristie (nanuet)

Hi Rich relaly beleive Woody wants no part of a Revis contract. the cap hit could be managed and a trade would have a more negative impact. Moreover it is not like they ahave a Brady, Brees or Manning taking up a big portion of cap for years to come. Also beleive Mr. T had an internal cap. Wh else would the nickel and dime Devito and stay unde the cap last year when they had some glaring weakensses?

Rich Cimini
  (4:24 PM)

You're right, Woody doesn't want to sign him to a monster deal. Good point about the lack of aa franchise QB; the time the Jets draft and develop a franchise QB to play, Revis' deal will be toward the end.

Matt (Madison)

Hi Rich - Great job as always. How do the Jets create extra cap room for the '13 season? Do you think Harris, Holmes, Brick, etc will restructure contracts? Do you see any of them being a cap casualty? Idzik has his hands full.

Rich Cimini
  (4:26 PM)

Brick and Harris haven't been approached, as far as I know. They want Holmes to re-work his deal. That could be dicey. If Holmes flat-out refuses, it'll be a tough decision. I wouldn't rule out cutting him, but it would be hard.

Joe (Selden, NY)

Rich, I have been following the Jets for over 30 years and this is close to the worst that I have seen to a total rebuilding. There will be 70% new coaches, a a new GM possibly, 50% new players on both sides of the ball, a new system on offense to learn, a QB situation in flux, needs in talent and depth all over the place, a horrible cap situation, this is terrible! Can we win at least 6 or 7 games even while rebuilding, or just wake me up in 2014 while I hibernate, lol? Can Garrard, he looks 45 years old, but seriously, can he do anything at 35 not playing for over 2 years and with those two serious prior injuries? This season is depressing already!

Rich Cimini
  (4:29 PM)

You're bumming me out, Joe ... although you make some good points.

Harry (Babylon, NY)

Rich - is Dion Jordan the perfect fit for Rex Ryan's D?

Rich Cimini
  (4:30 PM)

A bit thin at 245 lbs. Rex likes OLBs to be in the 260-265 range. Jordan would be a PR specialist for a year, gaining weight, before he can become an every-down player. Also will be coming off shoulder surgery.

Tyler (Ny)

Have you ever showed up to one of these things on time?

Rich Cimini
  (4:30 PM)

A couple of times -- but thanks for hanging out.

Patrick (New York)

I really think that if Geno is sitting there at 9 the jets must pull the trigger. Do You agree?

Rich Cimini
  (4:31 PM)

No, I don't agree. I think that would be a reach at 9.

john (brick nj)

Do you think the jets will be interested in Reggie Bush ?

Rich Cimini
  (4:32 PM)

In a perfect world, yes. But this is a cap world and I don't see it. But he's the kind of back you need in a WCO.

Oz (CT)

Hi Rich, I'm pretty surprised we haven't heard anything at all from Mornhinweg. Sparano came in with his own press conference and that's probably over the top, but I haven't heard a peep about the offense from the new OC. Maybe a new quieter era for the Jets with Idzik ? Though I would be curious to have him talk about what he plans to bring to the table. Thoughts ?

Rich Cimini
  (4:33 PM)

Good question, Oz. The media have made multiple requests to speak with Mornhinweg, but the team hasn't granted any. It's a shame because the fans (and media) want to hear from the guy.

Sean (Colorado)

Asked this of Mr Walker but wanted your take....is there any way the Jets get fair value for Revis? The injury adds some risk but if healthy he's the best backfield player in the league and, if they really want to trade him, the Jets may have to take an undervalue package, right?

Rich Cimini
  (4:35 PM)

It would be very hard to get fair value because of the injury and his contract demands. They can't give him away for a Gatorade bucket; that would be insane. But it's not going to be a Herschel Walker-type deal.

Martin (NY)

Can you see the Jets taking a chance on Ahmad Bradshaw? Is he a better fit than Michael Turner?

Rich Cimini
  (4:36 PM)

Health issues. But he could be a post-draft consideration.

Reggie (Long Island)

What's prohibiting the jets from restructuring Sanchez's contract and how willing is Holmes to bend on his ?

Rich Cimini
  (4:37 PM)

They haven't approached Sanchez. They're reluctant to move money into future years. The guarantees end this year and they want the flexibility to trade/cut him after the '13 season.

Billy (Eastchester, NY)

True or false: the Jets first round draft pick will be either Dion Jordan, Ziggy Ansah or Bark Mingo.

Rich Cimini
  (4:37 PM)

True.

Paul-Michael (Staten Island)

When are they going to let Tebow go?

Rich Cimini
  (4:38 PM)

Woody wants to keep him as long as he can to sell some PSLs....kidding.

Alan (Jersey City)

We're talking about players being a good fit for Rex Ryan's D. Is that really a practical consideration since conventional wisdom is that Rex will be dead man walking this season?

Rich Cimini
  (4:41 PM)

You can't approach it that way. You have to give him every chance to succeed.

Billy Bayer (Clark, NJ)

Everyone is talking about a Revis deal but SF is perfect partner for Jets to trade their first round #9 pick down for 49ers 31st and 34th round 1 picks. Any chance of that happening? Now that Mr T is gone you think the Jets may trade down for more picks for a change?

Rich Cimini
  (4:47 PM)

I wouldn't rule out the SF deal, but they have cap concerns and it's not their style to make big trades. SF likes to build through the draft. Yes, I could see them trading down. They have to. The roster needs some depth.

Andy (Hartford CT)

Coz suggested letting Tebow fight for one of the 5 QB spots. Do you agree?

Rich Cimini
  (4:48 PM)

My esteemed colleague has a soft spot for Tebow. Hey, it would give us plenty to write about.

Tom (Brooklyn)

Do you like how John Idzik has been handling the Media so far, as to keep the circus to a minimum?

Rich Cimini
  (4:48 PM)

No. I prefer circus.

RJ (Grand Forks, ND)

Any new about Dustin Keller? What are the Jets going to do at running back?

Rich Cimini
  (4:49 PM)

No news at all on Keller, which means he'll hit the open market. Probably draft a RB.

Luke (NY)

Rich, I have to say I'm on the side of keeping Revis and trading Cromartie. I just don't think the Jets will get the kind of package they are looking for with Revis. Plus, Cromartie is not a physical enough CB. Jet fans would all prefer Revis being a team leader instead of Cromartie. As you also pointed out, the Jets would be charged an additional 3 mil towards the cap if they trade Revis. Doesn't make much sense to me to take a cap hit while your all-pro is playing for another team.

Rich Cimini
  (4:52 PM)

I, too, would consider a Cro trade. His value is as high as it'll ever be. Problem is, you'd have to re-up with Revis before trading Cro -- and I don't see that happening. If you trade Cro first, you lose leverage with Revis.

jj (orangeburg,ny)

rich, what are the chances of the following players starting next season?vlad ducasse, jeff cumberland, bilal powell, stephen hill, garret mcintyre, antonio allen, and josh bush?

Rich Cimini
  (4:53 PM)

Ducasse, Powell and Hill could be starters. How's that grab you?

R (in CT)

Hey Rich - thanks as always for taking the time. Do you think Pettine's departure will impact any of the negotiations with the Jets own free agents? Were players closer to him than to Rex?

Rich Cimini
  (4:54 PM)

No inmpact at all. Plus, who are we talking about? Landry and DeVito? Money talks.

Ryan (NY)

Signing Garrard is a great thing... let's face it, we know he's not the answer, but it's hard to imagine his play is going to be worse than what the Jets had at QB last year, right?

Rich Cimini
  (4:54 PM)

I take it you're not a Sanchez fan.

Bob (NYC)

Whats Rex's reaction to talks of trading Revis, cutting veterans, and having such a young team for his make or break year ? He's probably walking like a lame duck...

Rich Cimini
  (4:55 PM)

Rex = not happy.

Michael (PHX,AZ)

Rich,I think without a doubt the Jets downfall is from the injury to Jim Leonhard. He was a huge part of the team, the defensive QB, a leader, and things revolved around him. In 2010, he got hurt 2 days before the monday night 45-3 debacle vs. New England, then they went on to a let down in the rain vs. Miami in week 14. They rebounded, but could have used him in the AFC Championship that year. Last year, he got hurt in the Kansas City game on an interception and they lost the last 3 to the Eagles, Giants, and Dolphins without him, missing the playoffs. Also, he is a winner. Baltimore was great wit him all those years and he succeeded in Denver ths year. Great player, should have nnever let him go.

Rich Cimini
  (4:56 PM)

I agree with what you say about Leonhard, but you're going to blame the downfall of the Jets on a 5-8 safety? Come back to us, dude.

Harry (Babylon, NY)

Rich - with so many similarly talented defensive lineman available in this year's draft can you see the Jets picking one of the top WR's at 9 and waiting until the 2nd or 3rd round to draft an edge rusher?

Rich Cimini
  (4:56 PM)

Good point, Harry. I could see Patterson at 9. Heard scouts really like him.

John (MA)

Rich, any update on Idzik talking to Santonio about restructure?

Rich Cimini
  (4:58 PM)

Scheduled to talk today, I think.

Andy (Hartford CT)

What's the logic of having Matt Simms? Clearly he's not a starter right?

Rich Cimini
  (4:59 PM)

Just giving him a shot. Good kid, works hard, decent arm.

Rich Cimini
  (5:00 PM)

Well, that's a wrap for me. Apologize for the delay. Let's call it a butt fumble on my part. We'll do it again next week. Thanks for the questions and have a great weekend. Rich
