It's the fastest hour in golf. Rory WD's and now it's time to worry. Tiger isn't dialed in yet either, gonna be a wild weekend.Bring IT!!
I think it is pretty weak of your fellow reporters to not give the full story on Rory's WD. Evans tweets that it is ego and bad habits on why he withdrew and Harig is on SC not once mentioning the wisdom tooth when his article the interview is tied too lays it out. I don't know about you but that is not a level of pain that you can just push aside and play at a professional level
First, Evans is entitled to his opinion on Twitter. He's not on the course covering the event but that doesn't mean he's not allowed to speak his mind. Especially since the swing stuff he said was also said by Graeme McDowell. When Harig did the SC hit it was before the tooth report came out.
What a rough way to (probably) miss the cut for Villegas. After such a positive day Thursday when it looked like he might have figured something out, to have such a disaster today... You really have to feel for the guy.
64-77. Just goes to show how razor blade thin the difference is between success and failure is at the top level. Really feel for him though cause he's working so hard to get back to form.
With this latest development from Rory, is he still going to be ok in a couple tournaments or will this set him back further?
It sets him back further. If it's more than just his wisdom teeth, he may wanna shut it down for a few weeks.
MC - gotta say today's move by Rors is beyond weak. If El Tigre pulled this, the press would skewer him forever. And I actually mean forever. If you can swing it, finish the round...shoot 100...then WD. You think anyone wouldnt recognize something wasnt horribly wrong? Pretty un-prolike stuff from Boy Wonder....
I would love to get a reaction from the sponsors about his poor start of the 2013 season. Plus an insight in the training regime, from twitter and his gf's postings it seems more that he is still on vacation then digging deep. He can do it... just need to be serious about the game and himself.
Now that Rors wd'd with a tooth ache and Tiger playing five rounds and winning the U.S. Open without an ACL, can we safely assume that in an MMA cage fight, Tiger would win?
I'd say that would be a safe assumption! haha
MC, in my opinion the media has made the impact of Rory's club switch much worse. If you keep hearing negative things you're bound to believe them eventually.
So why then when Phil switched to Callaway and got ripped for it did he win?
I am sick of talking about grown men anchoring putters in the bellies. Can we never, ever mention this topic again?
Unfortunately when the official ruling comes down from the USGA and R&A it'll be a big topic again.
@MC, Phil is more mentally tough than Rory.
And when exactly was Phil #1 in the world?
Who was your pick to win the tournament at the beginning of the week? Will it change after the cut today?
I picked Tiger to win. If he gets in the house at -3 or better I'll stick with that.
Rory had a bad day. Caroline had a bad tournament a couple of days ago. Can we start a rumor now?
Wozilroy have fallen in their perspective sports since the relaitonship began. Time to decide what is more important, career or relationship (and need to consider their age here).
Think one of the worst things you can call someone is quitter, and absent evidence or a pattern of behavior, Rory deserves benefit of doubt: but he's used up a lot of his margin for error on this one
Agreed. Doesn't help he had pictures taken eating a sandwich today on the course.
I promise. Last question. But every picture I see shows Tiger with last year's driver in the bag. Isn't this a pretty big setback for the massive Covert marketing campaign?
It's one of the reason's Nike was so excited to get Rory. He put the Covert in the bag right away. Tiger changes clubs at a glacier pace.
Double D put up another rainbow of a scorecard today...any word on on tour on whether Duval shows more life anytime soon? I know he keeps tweetin that he's making progress.
He's a guy that other golfers are rooting for to have a successful comeback. Just seems that week to week consistency just isn't there yet.
"Tiger changes clubs at a glacier place" the glacier feels insulted. Only thing slower than Tiger changing clubs is some pro's around a golf course
I was TRYING to be nice.
Golf writers collectively are damaging their profession. They badger a player for answers to often inane questions. Then when a player says something interesting they question his integrity. There are exceptions. Will anyone be surprised when Rory goes into shutdown mode with the media?
So if all you do is tell me about playing golf barefoot and the next time I see you you're wearing golf shoes, I AM THE JERK for calling you out on it?
What can we expect from Rickie Fowler this year? Had a great day yesterday and managed to hang around today.
He's fighting a bad back, but if he can get it stable, I expect a two win year from him.
Bigger concern for Rory, clubs or the girlfriend? I say girlfriend?
Clubs. I you can't trust the new clubs game will never get right. But I've said it before, it's the golf ball that takes the longest to get used to.
Would you explain why Rory left the course after 9 holes?
Told PGA Tour extreme wisdom teeth pain.
Lets say the PGA allows anchoring going against the USGA / R&A...Would that mean a guy like Keegan Bradley would have to switch putter for 2 majors (or 3 depending on the Masters)? I don't see how his sponsors would OK with him taking missed cuts in 2 or 3 majors a year because he has to putt conventional. Seems to me like guys will all be forced to make the change eventually.
If he switched putters it'd be length not brand. Sponsors don't care as long as you're playing their equipment. But yes, Keegan could play two majors with anchor and two without.
Do you expect Rory to play again before The Masters? If so, where? Doral?
he's scheduled at Doral next week and then Houston
Can we expect Rory to play next week or should we expect him to take the week off?
Depends on whether or not he has wisdom teeth removed... where's my sarcasm font?
If you're Rory do you add Bay Hill?
No, if I was gonna add an event it'd be San Antonio.
What is a tougher three holes on a calm wind day, Bear Trap, or Amen Corner??
Amen Corner has a reachable par 5 so with no wind I'd say Bear Trap is tougher
My tooth hurts and I can't concentrate on this typing I am doing. Can I leave work and go home?
What is your favorite Florida event?
Tampa Bay Championship. Most guys that have played all three tracks in the swing say Innisbrook is the toughest of the three. Elevation changes that many FL course just don't have
Tiger and Phil win, snow, fog and wind delays, Rory bombing, Brandt injured, anchored putting, it just goes on and on - can you remember a more bizarre start to the golf season?
Crazy to think all this stuff happening and we haven't even got to the Masters yet
MC, I have heard you mention the golf ball before and have heard that in multiple places. I have no credibility here but have also heard that companies just replace the logo on various balls. Any insight here?
Golf is such a small community that if a company tried that they'd be in court getting sued almost immediately. Better to have a guy dump a piece of his contract
A lot of jealousy from some of these folks ragging on Rors, eh MC??
Jealousy? Nah, I just think people don't believe his wisdom tooth excuse.
What's the Tour's stance on painkillers, like Percocet, if a player has a valid prescription? Are they allowed to play? My point is, if Rory does get his wisdom teeth removed, he'll no doubt be given a script for them.
Even if the tour allowed it, no doctor would tell a pro it was a good idea.
Corn or Flour tortillas?
Maybe Rory should stop hanging out with Tiger. His golf game is rubbing off on him.
I don't remember Rory winning this year. Maybe he should hang out with Tiger more
Does a WD or an MC hurt Rory's OWGR more? Or is it neither?
0 points either way
Awesome round for Luke Guthrie. Don't be surprised if he's up there on Sunday.
Who would you say is more likely to win a major this year. Tiger, Rory or Lee? For some odd reason I think Westwood will get one this season.
Right now my money's on Tiger
Thanks for chat! Can't believe the hour went by so fast!
still some time left but it does fly by
My sponsor question wasn't about brand of putter. My question is why would Cleveland pay him huge sums of money knowing he will probably have no chance at contending in 2 or 3 of the biggest tournaments in golf? I can see that being the issue.
Because I would rather have a guy win 1 major than none.
I have a sore tooth and millions of dollars, guess playing with Tiger is a big deal because I think I'd have had it pulled last week
Do tour pros look at the brackets in a match play event and say "uh oh I have so and so in my section" or do they truly not really care?
They don't care. They all believe if they play their best golf they are unbeatable.
Where does PGA national rank among tournament sites? Having a great resort on site is a big plus.
Good course in a great area. I'd say it's in the top 15 on tour stops
Last one (and most important). How much has your golf game improved since you traded in the bag you were carrying for a microphone? I'm expecting at least 3-4 off your HDCP!
It hasn't. When I was caddying I played less but being on the range and on course with these guys my tempo was much better. Now I gotta play 3 days in a row to "find it". And who has that kinda time?!
Better get back to work. Thanks for the chat MC really enjoy them.
Thanks for hanging
Pretty sure that everyone at Honda is having a nightmare right now between Rory an now Tiger
Lotta people on ledges
Yesterday Boo Weekly used his driver to relocate a water moccasin out of harm's way. How close have you come to a dangerous animal during a round?
grabbed an aligator by the tail. Picked up both copperhead and cottonmouth snakes.
Pine Valley is consistently rated as the top (or #2) course in the world, yet it has never hosted a major. Is there a reason? Not enough space/male-only club/other?
yes and yes. Not enough room for the circus that comes with the tournament.
Does Rory's Nike deal prohibit him from playing other clubs? Maybe he can get away with just the driver?
I wonder just what provisions were put in to the contract for disaster and when they will kick in. If they're not in there a re-structure could come if play doesn't improve.
With the mental aspect being such a large part of golf how many players see a mental coach? It seems like a tough thing to learn you either have it or you don't.
I'd say 80% of pro golfers have talked to a sports psychologist
Rory and Tiger in the same tournament this year: Dueling MCs, dueling 1st round exits, WD and below the cutline. I wonder if being chummy with each other is taking the edge off of both Tiger and Rory. Tiger (and his rivals circa mid-2000s) were at their sharpest and they weren't all as chummy.
Trust me when I tell you, no matter how good friends they are, when they tee it up on Thursday they wanna beat the snot outta their friends.
Does Rory's Nike deal include a dental plan?
Ok I just had to sneak that one in!
That was fast as ever! Thanks all. Have a great weekend.Same time, same channel... Monday!MCTwitter - @ESPNCaddieEmail - ESPNCaddie@gmail.com
