Chat with Farrell Evans

Farrell Evans
  (3:01 PM)

Happy New Year. Let's get started. The Masters starts in a month, but we need Rory to show us something with his new clubs and the anchor ban to play out and Brother Vijay Singh to learn his fate.

pj (midlo)

has Tiger become more conservative in his approach (risk averse) in your opinion than the swashbuckling days matey!!aaargh

Farrell Evans
  (3:03 PM)

Maybe. Tiger doesn't make every putt like he once did. So he can't lean on his short game to bail him out. But he still has a flair for the dramatic that comes from a lot of swashbuckling.

Alex (Anaheim)

What is the most underrated golf course?

Farrell Evans
  (3:05 PM)

The Copperhead course at Innisbrook. The players love it and they have had a some good winners--Furyk, Goosen, Donald. But it's in a tough rotation surrounded by Honda, Doral and Bay Hill. It's going to be the odd tournament that the top players skip to keep from doing four in a row.

Chris (Chicago)

Have you heard about any major changes to Augusta this year - they always seem to tweak it here or there?

Farrell Evans
  (3:06 PM)

Chris,I haven't heard of any major changes. Hopefully they won't lengthen it more. It's long enough. All they can do now is add some real rough. God forbid.

Chris (Chicago)

Do you enjoy Doral - seems like the weakest course on the Florida swing yet gets a WGC?

Farrell Evans
  (3:08 PM)

It's a historic venue. It's Miami. After this year, the course is going through a complete overhaul. The players don't love it. Trump owns it now. I hope that means good things.

Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)

What Golf Course that is on the PGA Tour is So hard that every Golfer that is on the PGA Tour is Absolutely Terrible there?

Farrell Evans
  (3:11 PM)

Mr. Fiegler,All players want perfection conditions. Soft greens, fast fairways, reachable par 5s and no wind.

Milan (Denver)

Farrell, which WGC do the players value the most?

Farrell Evans
  (3:13 PM)

It's hard to say but I would venture that they value the Match Play the least because of the nature of the format. After the majors and the Players, they are easily the events everybody wants to play.

Jerry (Chicago)

Are there any course in the southwestern part of Michigan you would recommend?

Farrell Evans
  (3:14 PM)

Jerry,All I can tell you to do is go to the Treetops in Gaylord, Michigan. It's beautiful. Rick Smith, Mickelson's former teacher is an owner. They have easily the greatest par 3 course in the country.

Shoshana (Boston)

The guy just hit a shot out of water, and had about a bazillion penalty shots, don't think being conservative is a problem, at least not into greens. And as to putts, he made about 5 billion on Friday to make the cut. Think his iron game is streaky though, and he has to much faith in his ability to hit mid-irons

Farrell Evans
  (3:16 PM)

No, he's not more conservative in the classical sense of the word. But I do think he is a little more tentative than from years past. And when you're tentative, whether it's driving a car or swinging a golf club, bad things are going to happen from time to time.

Ed (Long Island)

Do the Doral sponsors and tour get upset when word gets out that on Tuesday of tournament week, Phil and Keegan are at Augusta for a practice round?

Farrell Evans
  (3:20 PM)

Ed,All Cadillac cares about is that Tiger is in the field and on the tee box come Wednesday for the pro-am and Thursday for the start of the first round. And they certainly don't want him pulling out of the tournament. Then hightailing it off the Doral lot in a Mercedes with the TV following his car overhead like he's OJ in the white bronco.

rob cooper (indianaplis indiana)

what does the ucla bruin basketball team have to do to get respect.? 23rd? beat arizonia twice and they are 18? ucla sends lots of players to the nba? the ncaa needs to get their head out of their ass and look at who is beating who? what a joke, can you explain to me why arizonia is 18 and ucla is 23??? dont these institutions that govern the sport realize that ranking means everything on the march madness seating ????? ucla should be a 3 or 4 sead, not a 6th.

Farrell Evans
  (3:23 PM)

I don't much about Bruins basketball, except that John Wooden was once the coach and he had a couple of good players like Lew Alcindor and Bill Walton. However I do know that UCLA has produced some pretty good golfers.

Paul (NJ)

Are you saying players do not like the Blue Monster as it is now? Or do not like the idea of Trump's complete overhaul?

Farrell Evans
  (3:25 PM)

The players believe that the course needs some updating. I haven't heard anybody make negative comments about Trump. I mean, why would they, he loves golf and the tour and wants to host a major on one of his courses.

Milan (Denver)

I thought Rory was doing a press conference this morning. Did that not happen?

Farrell Evans
  (3:26 PM)

R-Mac's presser has been moved to Wednesday.

Farrell Evans
  (3:27 PM)

Anybody worried about Rory not regaining his form this year?

Chris (Chicago)

What would another poor showing for Rory mean moving forward this year? Do you think he is just a streaky player that dominates once hot?

Farrell Evans
  (3:30 PM)

Chris,Rory is not Tiger Woods good. We anointed him because of two 8-shot wins in majors. Fair enough. That's a good case for making him the future king. But to your point, I think a MC at the Masters would be the clincher for serious concern. So we're not there yet.

Milan (Denver)

Which WGC's do the players value most?

Farrell Evans
  (3:30 PM)

As I said earlier, it's hard to say. All I can surmise is that the Match Play is the least cherished because of the format.

Chris K (Wisconsin)

Would you rather be in Puerto Rico this week?

Farrell Evans
  (3:33 PM)

The P.R. is always nice. And while a win down there won't get you into the Masters, it gets you a two-year exemption and a lot of FedEX Cup points.

John (Virginia)

I'm headed to the Greenbrier Classic for the first time this year. Given that it's now two weeks ahead of The Open Championship and right after the nearby AT&T National, what are the odds Tiger plays this one again?

Farrell Evans
  (3:35 PM)

John,After he was outed last year for taking an appearance fee at the Greenbrier, it will be interesting to see if he goes back. But I don't see him playing because he will likely play in Europe two weeks ahead of The Open Championship.

Janet (New Jersey)

Tiger is still 6 Majors ahead of Jack's pace by age. Why do people assume he cannot win 4-5 more of 40? Nicklaus thinks he will still pass him!

Farrell Evans
  (3:37 PM)

Janet,I would be surprised to see Tiger not break the record. But think about it. There are only four majors a year. It's pretty amazing his winning percentage over that 11 year span of wins. He's older and the number of guys with a chance of winning increases every year.

Chris (Chicago)

How are the President's Cup rankings shaping up - Americans seem to be on fire so far this year which could mean a lot of movement?

Farrell Evans
  (3:40 PM)

Chris,You're going to have all the usuals. Hopefully, we can get a player like Bo Van Pelt who has never been on one of these teams in the mix or a rookie like Russell Henley. I'm sort of bored with the same guys playing on both teams--Prez and Ryder.

Trent King (Mcdonough, GA)

Will Rory be able to rebound from his "tooth ache?"

Farrell Evans
  (3:42 PM)

My brother from the Fox,That was all about his ego. He was playing so bad and couldn't stand to shoot 80 and deal with missing the cut. A reporter asked him three times in the parking lot if he was injured and he said nothing. But when he got back to the hotel with his manager, they concocted the tooth deal. Madness.

Guest (PalmBeach)

Explain the one-sided reasoning when it comes to Tiger catching Jack.?Tiger did not win all the majors -14/60 to date. Don;t the other players have to contend with Tiger to win alsoAre they better than him

Farrell Evans
  (3:44 PM)

I have said many times that Tiger will pick up those five majors at Augusta and the PGA. But I don't think he's still doing this at 45. So his window is about 5-7 years to do it. It seems reasonable.

Chris (Chicago)

Who goes lowest on first 2 days in the Tiger/Rory/Luke grouping?

Farrell Evans
  (3:45 PM)

Tiger. He played poorly in the final round of the Honda, but he's already won this year, while Rory is trying to figure out his game from A to Z.

Keith H (Seattle)

I'd be in favor of Freddie opening the door to the young guys with his Captain's Picks this year. Let's get some experience with the kids and the only way Stricker and Furyk get in is by automatic qualifier. What do you think?

Farrell Evans
  (3:47 PM)

Oh God! I have a lot of respect for Furyk and Stricker, but I hope that Freddie works hard to get some fresh blood on the team. And they don't need to be young guys, per se. Bo Van Pelt is 37 but he has never played in one of these match play things.

Chris K (Wisconsin)

Last week Boo Weekley used his driver to move a small water moccasin out of harm's way. Have you relocated any dangerous animals during a round?

Farrell Evans
  (3:49 PM)

I have seen a few moccasins, here and there, through the years. One time, back home in Georgia, I ran across one in a bunker. Needless to say, I took relief.

Milan (Denver)

The media and fans have been up in arms about Rory's actions last week. How do the players view something like that?

Farrell Evans
  (3:52 PM)

You heard what Ernie Els said. The South African is a big fan of Rory's but he said he didn't think what Rory did was right. They all know that temptation of quitting during a bad round, but they got over that impulse long ago in junior golf. The tooth pain excuse didn't endear him to anyone.

Patrick (Harrisburg, PA)

I'm going to my second US Open this year. Looking forward to Merion?

Farrell Evans
  (3:53 PM)

Patrick,I am excited about seeing what the players will do on a old golf course. But I'm not excited about getting from the media center to the golf course and to the players when they come off the course. It's going to be a nightmare.

Matt (Houston)

with all the talk about the belly putter ban, it really affects a small number of PGA players. In your opinion, is there anything the USGA/PGA should change that would affect all players (i.e. the changes to the grooves a few years ago)?

Farrell Evans
  (3:54 PM)

Scale back the ball and the 400 cc -plus drivers and ban hybrids. Those three things would take the game back thirty 30 years. Everyone would suffer.

Milan (Denver)

Would a player rather win the Masters, or both the PGA Championship and Open Championship. 2 is generally better than one but when the 1 is the Masters is hard to go against it.

Farrell Evans
  (3:56 PM)

Probably, the Masters. it's the biggest tournament in the world. Europeans might say the Open championship. math wizards might say the PGA because of its deep field. But in general two is better than one on your resume.

Chris (Chicago)

Tiger wants the 2...

Mark (Tempe, AZ)

Will my adopted home of Arizona ever get a major? I assume not b/c of summer weather here but if weather weren't a factor, is there a course worthy of hosting?

Farrell Evans
  (3:56 PM)

No. When would they play it? It's too hot there when it would have a chance for an Open or PGA.

Susan (New York)

Do you agree with Rick Reilly's assessment that even if Tiger is half as good as he was under Harmon and Haney he will still win 5 Majors in the next 10 yrs?

Farrell Evans
  (3:57 PM)

Riles is right this time.

Jon (Des Moines)

Feeling a good performance from G-Mac? Trying to decide if I should roll with him or use Tiger even though he doesn't appear on the top of his game.

Farrell Evans
  (3:57 PM)

Go with Tiger. It's always a good bet.

Matt (Houston)

Ever been approached to do a golf podcast? i mean even poker has one.

Farrell Evans
  (3:57 PM)

Collins is on it.

Brian (NY)

What's the latest on Snedeker?

Farrell Evans
  (3:58 PM)

He's not playing this week. He wants to get healthy. You know about that little tournament in August next month? That's what's on his mind.

Chief Illiniwek (Urbana)

Which university has the most grads on tour right now? The University of Illinois has four tour members - Stricker, Points, Guthrie, Langley. Of course Stricker is in semi-retirement now...

Farrell Evans
  (3:59 PM)

Clemson, I would guess. Then Georgia and Oklahoma State.

Chris (Chicago)

When you are struggling like Tiger did at #6 last week, why not just take an iron and put it in play... he is still the best with long irons and could have at least got a bogey daily there...ego?

Farrell Evans
  (3:59 PM)

Ego and what he feels like gives him the best chance to score.

Milan (Denver)

First to win a major: Sergio, DJ, Donald, Westwood, or Fowler?

Farrell Evans
  (3:59 PM)

DJ.

Shoshana (Boston)

They scale back ball, take away hybrids, and toss the 400cc driver tomorrow, Tiger passes Jack easy. And no pro-am at a WGC as long as Tiger finishes 72 holes, preferably during the TV window, everyone is happy

Farrell Evans
  (4:00 PM)

I agree. The equipment has taken the premium off talent and pure ball striking ability and the golf swing.

Mark (Tempe, AZ)

How about my home state of Ohio? Hosted many majors over the years but none very recently...

Farrell Evans
  (4:00 PM)

Lots of great courses. Firestone, maybe.

Shoshana (Boston)

What did you think about Yani's comments about being #1 in golf, especially in light of Rory's struggles

Farrell Evans
  (4:01 PM)

It's all vanity and deep down she knows that.

Farrell Evans
  (4:02 PM)

Guys, my time is up. I look forward to being with you again soon. Stay tuned to espn golf for all your golf news and commentary. peace.
