OK, let's get started with the questions. And see how many people make fun of my toupee.
I read the article about Brewer getting second team snaps but I thought the coaches were excited about Overstreet and his ability? Is that not the case anymore? Is Overstreet out?
I thought maybe Overstreet had the edge going into spring but they are very high on Brewer. I think Brewer could be the No. 2 guy. Jalen showed his selflessness by saying he would be emergency QB in the Alamo Bowl and I think he can be an asset. But i really believe more snaps are going to Brewer at this point.
What's up carter!Who has been the most impressive players in spring practice. And I quadre Diggs gonna move to safety?
Kendall Sanders and Cayleb Jones. Really like what both WRs are doing out there.
What 3 areas does UT need to improve to solidify its chances of getting to 10 Wins or more??
Also what commit are we most likely to get next? It's be nice to at least get Jamal Adams to have our top DB for this recruiting class to start it off.
Tough one. In talking to Max and William they thought there might be a couple this week but not so sure that is going to happen. New policy has kids waiting more. And TAMU is a legit threat.
What players didn't get mentioned in the open practices that we can look for to make some noise come Summer camp heading into fall?
Estelle as a backup tackle.Really like what Tevin did out there Friday.Ced Reed is better than people think.
Can we expect some Gray and Brown sets this year in the shotgun or they going to leave that too Berg?
Gray is running the wild a ton.
Are any football players surprising you in Spring ball? Positively or negatively?
Well the backup o line is not good at all. Greenlea, Porter and Doyle. Don;t be shocked if Texas frees up some scholarships there.Nick Jordan is having a good spring and that is very important.
What would it mean if UT can get Kabongo back for one more year?
An 18 to 20-win season in 2013-14.
How is Jake Raulerson holding up? Is he guaranteed to stay an offensive lineman or could he still end up on defense?
He needs to add weight but he is a fighter. He is being pushed around but you have to like that he is willing to stick his nose in there and he is tough. think he stays on o for now.
Any major changes that are noticeable from this spring practice to last spring? Minus the qb questions..
Daje is being used a lot more. And Gray in the wild a lot more.
What are the chances that Myck Kabongo stays for his Junior year? And what are the chances that we can land Julius Randle?
Randle - slim chance.Myck - i think he hates the NCAA and is ready to go.
WHO IS THE NEXT CHRIS CARTER AT SAFETY ON NEXT YEAR ROSTER AND CAN JAYLEN OVERSTREET BE THE NEXT JAMES BROWN AND QUARTERBACK....TOO DEREK LEWIS BABY!!!!!!! HOOKEM
Um lay off the coffee. Safeties are going to be Turner and Phillips. Maybe Colbert and Thompson some. Overstreet has a ways to go. Great arm but not ready yet.
I've got a few questions for you kind sir:Who is your offensive and defensive choice for biggest sleepers on the team that we should keep our eyes on?What are the horns biggest weaknesses and strengths?Last questions, what should we expect out of the offensive line this year? How much improved do you believe they'll be?Thanks Carter!
Offensive sleeper: McFarland at tight end. Would like to see Texas go to him more.Defense: Ced Reed.Best position: RBWorst O line and safety.I do not have much faith int he o line because you have the same guys who were there last year and the year before. I'm not a huge Searels fan. They should get help with Harrison but they need to do something about the center spot. And Walters has to be more consistent in his effort.
I think people are taking Mack Brown's new recruiting policy out of hand. I believe the policy is about the program being tied to a recruit, and when a recruit looks around and you are pretty sure that recruit is going to decommit. The program will start looking for someone to fill your spot and not wait till when your decommit is official. That just make since instead of getting stuck out in the cold for a position of need. What say you?
I understand where Mack is coming from on this one. He got burned and it is his feeling that Texas is good enough that they should demand an answer from a kid and that kid should be true to his word. But if I'm a recruit I am going to take my time and see everything i want to see before i commit.
i see huge potential this year for a monster year from mike davis. the guy always seems to be open down the field and if Ash had been more consistent with those deep throws this past year i think he could have had somewhere near 1000 yards. With the new O, how many you think he'll rack up this year? potential 2nd rounder?
WR are hard to pick int he draft. Just never know where they are going to go beyond the top three WRs. I see him as a third round guy maybe. He needs Ash to be much better on the deep ball this year for him to put up big numbers.
I'm beginning to get a little worried. I haven't heard anyone report that Ash was anything but average during the 2 open practices. Also, with Ash not being a natural outspoken leader, I'm afraid he won't demand players/receivers put in the extra time with him to build chemistry (the way VY and Colt did).
Ash is fine. He has so much going on inside his head with the new tempo and everything it is hard for him to be on top of everything at the same time. He will lead in the summer.
Where do you see Daje making most plays, the slot, or out of the backfield?
Slot. But they like to bring in across when Gray is in the wild. It's a great set because it keeps the defense offbalance.
Do you believe Brewer will beat out Overstreet for that 2nd or 3rd spot - depending where Case gets slotted?
Brewer No. 2 and then maybe Case. But i think on the first depth chart they will have Case No. 2.
Random, but I'm moving to Austin next fall. So where is your favorite place to eat in Austin?
Well there are a ton of them. It's hard to pick. And it really depends on where you live. But Manuels is the best spot for lunch.
How is J. Gray lookin?
He looks pretty quick. I like what he is doing and he has great hands.
Will Ash be the Big 12's best quarterback next year? What do you predict his stats will be next year?
He should be the best given his two years and that Texas is going to a spread. I think 23 TDs, 11 ints and 3,200 yards
When is Texas' next (verbal) commitment coming?
Might be this week according to the recruiting guys. But you never know with kids.
Carter,I will be making the venture down to Morgantown this year? Will Horns be playing for a BCS bowl then. Heard it's crazy down there, hopefully no reason to burn any couches!
They have to be BYU and OU first. If they do that then yes.
Heard Ash looked rusty in practice and that VY called out the QBs for not putting in extra work. Is Ash working as hard as he needs to?
He looked average Friday and better Saturday.
Jordan Hicks has been limited in practice because of a hamstring. Given his history of injuries, what pct would you give on Hicks playing the entire year?
I would not depend on Hicks. And Texas has some very good backers. Santos is tearing it up. So is Jinkens. Hicks will start the year but not sure how long that body holds up.
From the reports I've read, it looks like Dalton Santos may have passed Steve Edmond. Should we anticipate Edmond being moved to DE?
My thought exactly. He is big enough to do it and Kendall Thompson can play backup middle. But Texas has not made that move yet.
Shiro Davis is by no means a very big DE. Yet, everyone I've read said that Jackson Jeffcoat looked considerbly smaller than Davis. No doubt this is due to Jeffcoat's pectoral injury and his inability to weight lift. The question is, will Jeffcoat have enough time to regain size and strength and be an affective pass rusher for us this season?
JJ will be fine but he has now torn both pec muscles and that is a worry for a guy that looked like a first rounder a few years ago. Shiro is up to 240 and not as big as JJ.
What key game or (s) wins will solitify Texas in a BCS game or National Championship
Chances Kabongo returns for Jr season? Does it increase if Randle commits?
Don't think Randle is coming. If Myck has a strong B12 tourney he is gone. And i think he is already gone.
Why does there seem to be so much confusion between Texas recruits and the coaching staff regarding offical offers? I've heard numerous times that a certain player thought he had an offer only to find out he didn't, yet. I may not know exactly how the process works, but it seems pretty simple, "Player X, We would like you to come play football for The University of Texas. Therefore, we are now officially extending a scholarship offer to you." I don't hear about other schools having such confusion surrounding whether or not a recruit has an official offer. What's the deal?
Kids want to say they have been offered because there is pressure on them. A the coaches keep it murky because they want the kid to believe he has been offered. Texas is very limited in who it offers. So there are not that many at a given time.
Reports are Texas could have already locked up Otaro Alaka had the staff done their homework and offered him while he was on campus for JD2. Why wait 2 days and offer Monday? Also, what happens that makes so many schools jump and offer a kid all of a sudden? Alaka barely had any offers before Texas JD2. The next week the offers just come rolling in!!
Well, Texas got into trouble by not doing their homework on kids -- see 2010 season -- and now they are trying to make absolutely certain they have the right kid before they offer.
What if anything is changing about our defensive approach (such as schemes or even how the coaches especially Diaz are coaching). The news about the offense is interesting, but we all know the real and biggest problem was the atrocious defense
Akina should be more a part of planning on defense and that is a big change. Plus Santos and Jinkens know what the heck they are doing now and can just go out there and play.
What young player will see the most playing time this season: Kedall Sanders, Cayleb Jones, or M.J. MacFarland
Cayleb. He is going to be a starter and a big target.MJ will have to split time. Sanders is a backup.
what's going on with the Director of Personnel position? Haven't heard anything...are you hearing anything?
Have not heard anything and they might be slow playing this because there is still some discussion at the NCAA level as to how many people can be hired. Texas goes by the book on stuff like this and they do not want to hire and then have to fire someone.
What took Mack Brown so long to hire recruiting people? Is that a reason Texas has so many misses on their recent kids or is it a lack of coaching?
NCAA just started to allow more people to be hired. But there might be a reverse in that coming soon.
What is the deal with this DE from Houston?
He might fit in better with another team. He was touting TAMU not too long ago.
What's the news/deal with Zeke... I had heard the rumors for most of the semester that he wanted to transfer here, just never thought it would happen. Seen him play he was UofH best DE, should he compete for Okafor's spot? Kinda excited!
See previous answer
Texas needs more commitments on the defensive side of the ball for 2014!! Who is next?
Well Adams is a guy Texas has to get. They needs DBs and DTs. But there are not that many great DTs in state this year.
Last year it seemed that Mack stuck with Ash because McCoy could never take advantage of his opportunies. Do you see Mack giving Brewer the same type of opportunity should Ash continue to struggle?
I think they stick with Ash through thick and thin because he is their best chance to win.
Will UT's offense be able to compete against the better Big 12 Defenses this year? What do you think about the Texas vs BYU matchup in Provo? Also how many wins should I expect from UT this year?
The BYU game is interesting because it comes so early and is on the road. I think that is a going to be a tough win for Texas. BYU is a very mature team and loves to play defense. As for wins, if they beat BYU 10 or more. If not then 9.
Who will be the Texas Longhorns Running Backs for 2013?
Gotta hand it to you, you are persistent. J. Gray.
Justin Jackson is the latest Texas stud to decide to attend college elsewhere. Do you think Barnes will be able to keep other 2014 guys like Winslow and Mudiay in state? And will late season victories against OU and Baylor help him land Randle and/or Frazier?
No on Randle and Frazier. He might have better luck next year but for now the recruiting looks grim.
Break down the carries comming out of the backfield. What pct of the carries go to Gray, Brown, Bergeron, and Deje
Good one.Gray: 50Brown: 30Daje/Joe: 20
I read the article about Brewer, but what about Swoopes? I heard he has been impressive so far...what are his chances of being #2?
He needs a lot of work on his throwing motion.
Who is the leader to be the 3rd WR thus far?
Cayleb Jones. Like Kendall Sanders too. But Jones is the leader.
If you look at the past 5 years it seems like we have missed out on majority of playmakers that we have signed. Is that due to a lack of coaching abilities or is it that we lack recruiting advisors?
All coaching. Texas does less with more than anyone in the country.
You said that the "NCAA just started to allow more people to be hired" for recruiting. Then how has Alabama been doing it before?
Texas has had people in place just like Bama. Ken Rucker was in place for Texas But the NCAA just now said they are allowing all people within the department to be apart of recruiting so teams are loading up. TCU and Bama have added guys. Texas is looking at doing the same.
Will we ever gain the state back from A&M?
I think so but it might be a few years. TAMU should have a solid season next year too.
How much of an impact/improvement do you think the new coaching hires in Norman will have on their recruiting?
Well not a ton in Texas. They have fallen behind in that area now that TAMU is up and the SEC is coming into the state.
What's up Carter?! After seeing the guys go through 2 practices, if you had to pick 1 player that is the most physically imposing (i.e. got after in in the weight room the last few months), who would it be?
Hmm. I like that question. I'm going with Malcom Brown - d tackle.
I completely agree with you Carter. This year especially, it's all about oklahoma. If we can't beat the sooners with the players that we have comming back even though they lost a ton of guys including 3 underclassmen, then Mack will be forced to retire. What do you think?
They lose to OU and they need to make a change. Texas cannot lose that game so many years in a row and be complacent about it.
Is it Sweet 16, or unemployment line, for Rick Barnes in 2014?
Nah. It's hoops. As long as he makes it to the tourney he will be fine.
Are you hearing anything about Brewer transferring this summer. Friday's practice lent credence to this rumor as Brewer was just relegated to handing off the ball to RB's. But he got more snaps Saturday than other backups and i think he was the best among all the QB's. I think he is going to be great with Major's system and hate to loose him.
I do not think he transfers. I think he is in line to be the No. 2 quarterback.
Who would win in a fight, Reveille or Mack Brown?
Brown will get down and dirty so I'm going there.
oklahoma has to play in Notre Dame in South Bend. The following week they play TCU in norman. Then it's the RRS. If we can't beat the sooners in spite of all the players that we are returning and all they lost, will Mack Brown be fired even if he wins 10 games?
Hard to get rid of him if he wins 10. But if they lose to OU I don;t think they will win 10. I think if they lose to OU that will have meant they have already lost to BYU and then will lose to TCU and possibly to WVU.
When does the Longhorns play Spring Football?
True of False, the injury prone Jordan Hicks officially becomes a bust in 2013?
Hard call. I think he is a great player. If he stays healthy he is not going to be a bust. But one more injury and he is a bust.
Greatest Longhorn basketball player of all-time? Does Durant count having only stayed one year?
Yes. And it is Durant.
When is the Game Between Rust & White for the Texas Longhorns in College Football?
OK, it looks like you guys are out of questions. Be sure to hit up the HornsNation forum if you have any other questions.
