Chat with Michael Collins

Michael Collins
  (3:00 PM)

Yeah Baby!! It's the fastest hour in golf. What do we expect from Tiger and Rory this week? IF Rory just walked off and the tooth story was a late cover, you ok with it? Would you wanna watch a guy shoot 83 on tv? Gonna be a good one today... BRING IT!!

Tyler (Athens,Ga)

Michael What is wrong with Rory right now? He couldn't hit the broad side of a barn right now

Michael Collins
  (3:01 PM)

His swing is off and he doesn't trust his equipment. That's the deadly combo in golf because you try and adjust your swing to the clubs. Should be the other way around.

Paul (U of Portland)

Michael, will you being going to Augusta again this year? What major are you looking forward to most this year?

Michael Collins
  (3:03 PM)

Yep, I'm going. Looking forward to Augusta and the US Open the most. A major at less than 7,000 yards?! Gonna be awesome if it's firm and fast.

Jeff (Newport Beach)

About the new Golf Boys Video: Better than the first? Good? Hillarious? When do you get a cameo?

Michael Collins
  (3:04 PM)

For those of you who haven't seen it... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iiiOqybRvsMMuch better than the first video, great use of other golfers names, and Ben Crane and I are talking about doing a video together.

Jeff (Newport Beach)

@ElkPGA called the Golf Boys "shameless self promotors" Your take?

Michael Collins
  (3:07 PM)

All the proceeds go to a @charitywater. I question why anyone would hate on people trying to raise money for those in need. Maybe Elkington should focus more on helping others instead of hating on the Golf Boys.

Steve (Abu Dhabi)

So, Bubba's chest hair, does he overseed in the winter?

Michael Collins
  (3:08 PM)

I told him on twitter that if he agrees to go wax it, I'd do my chest too. Would be funny watching us scream like Steve Carrell in 40 Year Old Virgin!

Matt (Houston)

Michael-Do caddies stay at the same hotels/resorts as their pro? if not, does it make for logistical problems for tee times, warmups, ect? Thanks

Michael Collins
  (3:10 PM)

More guys stay at the same hotels now because of Priceline and Hotwire. But most caddies if they're not staying at the same place rent cars and meeting at the course isn't a problem.

Mark (Tempe, AZ)

My tooth hurts...I'm leaving.

Ed (Long Island)

I think the golf media needs to relax on Rory a little bit here. What did we end up missing - Rory hacking up a golf course for another 9.5 holes? The damage to his mental state would probably have been worse. He is really on a 23 year old kid, with exceptional skill and talent, but lives in a fishbowl. I'm sure everyone has done dumber things than walking off a golf course during a bad round when they were 23. Give the kid a break. If he finished out and just left, would that have made anybody sleep better at night?

Michael Collins
  (3:12 PM)

And after the way his girlfriend got creamed playing in the first round of her tennis tournament I wonder if something might be up between them.

Cody (Nebraska)

Rory had a bad slump last year and everyone started getting worried just like they are now. How are you feeling about this years slump compared to last years?

Michael Collins
  (3:13 PM)

I would feel much better about it if there wasn't the equipment change. Actually, the equipment isn't even what worries me, it's the golf ball.

Shoshana (Boston)

Apparently Rory has the same problem getting dental care as many Americans. Otherwise why not get it pulled during the 5 wk break he just took

Michael Collins
  (3:14 PM)

Talked to my dentist last night, he said he'd do it for Rory for free and he'd be good to go in two days.

Patrick ((on the road in) Harrisburg, PA)

Cody makes a good point... then we saw what he did at Kiawah...

Andrew (WI)

I wish we had the power to wake people from their graves just so we could grab Bobby Jones and show him what the reigning Masters champ is up to in that video. (not a criticism though. great video)

Steve (Abu Dhabi)

Have heard unconfirmed reports that Bubba's chest hair is only rolling a 3 on the Stimpmeter. True?

Michael Collins
  (3:15 PM)

Who putts out of the rough?! HAHA

John (Denver)

Have you ever had someone who just bagged it in the middle of a round?

Michael Collins
  (3:16 PM)

Walk off, no. Mentally check out, lots of times.

Chris K (Wisconsin)

Is it worth your time to predict winners ahead of a tournament? The talent pool is so deep that any guy can put together a few good rounds. Props to whomever had Michael Thompson, Geoff Ogilvy, or Luke Guthrie!

Michael Collins
  (3:18 PM)

It's fun to try and see who's playing well coming into a tournament. But if we really could predict the future, I'd have won the Powerball a few times and be living on a beach in Bora Bora

Tanner (Atlanta) [via mobile]

Have a few under the radar names to watch at Doral?

Michael Collins
  (3:19 PM)

Peter Hanson is my Sleeper Pick this week, but are there really any sleepers in a field this small and ranked so high?

Keith H (Seattle)

Michael, how about MC, MC, T78, MC then a win? That's lightning in a bottle and glad to see it. Life changing stuff...(The MCs weren't your initials.)

Brett Boyer (Milwaukee)

I know that Sean Foley and Tiger continue to stress playing a left-to-right fade, but (to me) it seems Tiger is truly Tiger when he plays a low draw/stinger. Why do you think he's leaning away from playing his signature shot(s) for one that he seems far less comfortable with?

Michael Collins
  (3:22 PM)

Because a left to right shot (fade) for a righty is easier to control than a draw. And he's not comfortable with the draw.

Tom (LA)

OK MC, in the past couple of chats, you've casually mentioned telling a golfer he sucked and moving gators and water moccasins with your bare hands. I mean, are you saving it all for the book?

Michael Collins
  (3:24 PM)

No, well maybe I should. But long stories like that are good for video. Not for a quick chat like this.

pat (chicago)

if merion is firm and fast, does this fit the eye of the tiger? see what i did there...

Michael Collins
  (3:26 PM)

cute... but yes, it does. I picked him to win there.

Ed (Long Island)

Do the top tier pros like this week at Doral better than a regular tour stop - tougher field, but limited participants? Not sure which gives them a better chance to win.

Michael Collins
  (3:27 PM)

a 64 man field is loved by the top tier guys but it's the rich getting richer. As far as Doral goes is the worst course of the FL swing.

Kevin (Doral)

If you hit your new driver as bad as Rory does, wouldn't it make your tooth hurt also?

Michael Collins
  (3:28 PM)

Yes, and there'd be actual teeth marks on it from me trying to bite thru it.

Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)

What is the Steepest Golf Course on the PGA Tour?

Michael Collins
  (3:29 PM)

Kapalua has the biggest elevation changes

Cody (Nebraska)

I'm learning golf's biggest issue changes weekly. One week there is slow play during a tournament and everyone starts debating the best way to handle it. Then the next week someone releases a comment about anchoring putters and all focus then shifts back to that. If we could come back to the issue of slow play, when could we reasonably expect an answer to this problem.

Michael Collins
  (3:31 PM)

That's my problem with what the USGA and R&A are doing with anchoring. It's an issue that affects how many golfers? But slow play affects everyone. IMO it's like getting everyone to look away from a real issue so you don't have to face it. I don't know that they'll come up with an answer, I'm anxious to see if anyone gets a stroke penalty at the US Open for slow play.

Ryan (Minneapolis)

I'm glad you brought up the Rory girlfriend angle, when I heard he WD with "mental" issues, I immediately checked and saw she lost first round. As a 23 yr old with girlfriend issues when there is such a limelight surrounding him. I see that being a way bigger issue than equipment.

Michael Collins
  (3:33 PM)

But we don't know if there's an issue there, nothing has been stated publicly so it can only be speculation. Even more dangerous sometimes.

Matt (Houston)

I know it received quite a bit of negative press here, but is it possible the Shell Houston Open actually gets a benefit from being 2 weeks before Augusta in that many of the top pros will use it as a final tune-up then head to Augusta early?

Michael Collins
  (3:34 PM)

Don't know why y'all would get negative press about such a strong field. The fact that tournament organizers made the greens fast like Augusta was a brilliant move on their part and has paid off handsomely.

stuart (oklahoma)

Good to see the r&a is in favor of the ban....if you were Bradley would you continue using the long putter for as long as the allow or would you switch today?

Michael Collins
  (3:36 PM)

I would win as many as possible using the anchor method, (I personally can't putt that way) then when/if the ban affected you'd have plenty of years to play without worry of losing your tour card.

Ed (Long Island)

I was surprised this past week at the amount of fear water puts even into professional golfers. Guys with wedges in there hand not going anywhere near flag sticks and finding a decent amount of water balls. I guess they are that good, but human too!!!

Michael Collins
  (3:37 PM)

Because even pros know you can make a 25 footer for birdie on the green, you ain't making one from the water.

Chris K (Wisconsin)

It would be fine with me if we never speak again about Rory's equipment.

Michael Collins
  (3:37 PM)

Unfortunately until he wins again, it's gonna be an issue.

Jon (NY)

do you see rory winning a major now?

Michael Collins
  (3:38 PM)

Ask me on Friday's Chat after I see him play this Thursday

LuckyDelFuego (Virginia)

Best golf joke in your repertoire right now?

Michael Collins
  (3:38 PM)

Too long to write out here.

Patrick ((on the road in) Harrisburg, PA)

What's one course that deserves a Tour stop that doesn't currently have one?

Michael Collins
  (3:41 PM)

The thought of the Tour not playing Disney anymore is depressing. But there are a lot of courses and cities that don't have tournaments and should. Seattle area. St. Louis area. Indianapolis area just to name a few.

Kyle (Virginia)

harder to figure out - the OGWR or Kip Henley's tweets?

Michael Collins
  (3:43 PM)

OWGR much harder! To figure out Kip's tweets just watch some shows like Swamp People or Trick My Truck and you'll be good to go. HAHA

Kyle (Virginia)

did you ever look @ your pro's playing partners and get happy because of who was on their bag?

Michael Collins
  (3:45 PM)

very much so. There were guys I really liked caddying with, players too. Makes the day go by faster. A great caddy once told his player, "The enjoyment of my day is not determined by your score." I tried to live by that on the course. Easier said than done.

Paul (Portland, OR)

I'm joining late, but didn't John Daly pick up his ball and walk off the course at least once?

Michael Collins
  (3:46 PM)

More than once, and his reputation still suffers because of it. It's something I am positive Rory never wants associated with him.

Dee ((Lancaster))

How's the golf in Bora Bora?

Michael Collins
  (3:47 PM)

I'll let you know as soon as I win the Powerball for more than $100 million. In fact, I'll let you play with me!

Alex (OH)

Rick Reilly has called anchoring the putter 'cheating'.. so why doesn't everyone do it if it makes everyone putt so much better? I don't think it should be banned.

Michael Collins
  (3:50 PM)

It's legal. I say he's a cheater too. His title is "writer". I've NEVER seen him use a pen and paper. He should be called a "typer". Cause that's what he really does.Seriously though, I look at belly and long putter the same way, how does it affect MY game? It doesn't so even though I don't like the way it looks if you wanna do it and it makes the game fun for you, DO IT!

Ed (Long Island)

How much is Tiger enjoying Rory WDing...hardly a mention of his mediocre play this week?

Michael Collins
  (3:53 PM)

I honestly think Tiger feels for Rory. No pro wants to see a good guy and friend suffer with their game. It's why guys help each other on the range and during practice rounds. I want your best, it's empty if I beat you at your worst.

Chris K (Wisconsin)

Erik Compton brings it!

Michael Collins
  (3:53 PM)

Yeah he did. That was great. I hope he can build on the 4th place finish and get in contention some Sunday afternoon.

Tom (Albany)

I've been fortunate to play Oak Hill about 5 times. Have you ever played it? You'll love it when you see it at the PGA Championship

Michael Collins
  (3:54 PM)

Never played it but I was at the last major that was played there. Really good track.

stuart (oklahoma)

Tiger, Sergio, or Rory...who wins a major first?

Michael Collins
  (3:55 PM)

I picked Rory to win the Masters and I'm trying desperately to stick to my guns but I'm hanging on by a fingernail right now. Got see him light it up on Thursday to have any confidence in my early thinking.

Alex (OH)

Would anchoring even be an issue if Keegan, Webb and Ernie has won lesser tournaments instead of majors?

Michael Collins
  (3:56 PM)

Absolutely. It's why no one raised an issue before.

John (Denver)

Champions tour version of the Golf Boys would/should be......

Michael Collins
  (3:58 PM)

Langer, Couples, Fuzzy, and TrevinoI may need to try and get them to Harlem Shake sometime... would be EPIC!!!

Paul (Portland, OR)

Heck, my mental state is always not quite right on the golf course as I follow my sliced drives into the woods...

Michael Collins
  (3:58 PM)

Mine either

Tom (Albany)

What if this is just what rory is like-- streaky. Similarly last year he went through a stretch where he was not very good at all, missing a lot of cuts and poor finishes then got hot again and played like world number one. How come nobody thinks that this is all that this cold stretch for him is? Hes streaky, not consistent like tiger. Everyone is measuring him off Tiger standards.

Michael Collins
  (4:00 PM)

That's the problem when you dominate majors that you win. And win the way he does. It reminds us of Tiger. But you're right, this may just be what Rory is... MC's a bunch and then POW destroys the field and takes a major. Would that be so bad?

Michael Collins
  (4:01 PM)

And I'll end on that question!Same Time, Same Channel... FRIDAY ok?!Thanks everyone.@ESPNCaddie on Twitteror email me at ESPNCaddie@gmail.comPEACE.MC
