A fun race broke out at Bristol Sunday And the Kyle to watch in Nationwide isn't the one who won at Bristol, but the one who finished second. My rundown: http://tinyurl.com/dyq8xnw
Kurt Busch didn't seem all too pleased with 4th place and I wondered if the champ expects way more from his @FR78racing team?
If he does, he's in for a rude awakening. Fourth is darn good for this team, but he could get lucky and win one somewhere.
So that Dale might win a race do you expect Mr. H to make Kenny Francis crew chief on the #88 team?
You win so far for the most ridiculous idea of the day.
How impressed were you with the way Kyle Busch refused to lose to the #2, holding him off lap after lap at the finish?
Not much. He could have refused to lose the race if not for yet another pit-road speeding penalty.
Will Joe Gibbs Racing replace Dave Rogers as #18 crew chief for costing Rowdy pit road speeding penalties 2 races in a row?
Wow Laura, you've become KyBu's biggest defender. The answer is no.
Why does Kurt Busch always refer to all the other drivers by last name only except his bro Rowdy?
Who cares? Most guys refer to other drivers by their number.
Do you think Rowdy was toying with Larson in the NW race to put on a good show for the fans?
No. But I think the Cup bully better look out for young Larson in the future. He's the most talnted young racer I've seen in many years.
Who ya got winning the IndyCar opener at St. Pete?
Probably Will Power.
Great races at Bristol and Australia, any way a tire could be developed for NASCAR that would throw some pit strategy into it? I know they don't want blown tires, but tire management should be part of the sport in my opinion. Seems like if you throw 4 new tires on, you should get an advantage.
I think tire manangement was a big factor yesterday Dave, as Kenny Francis said afterward. He didn't take any changes with right side tires. It costs other teams, including Gordon.
To improve team morale do you think Coach and JD need to park Rowdy for a few NW races so Sadler and Vickers have a chance?
Won't happen. Sponsors have paid for KyBu to be in the NW seat. But I wish it would.
Lets say there's 3 driver's mathematically eligible for the championship at Homestead. Who are the three?
Ok, I'll play along. Brad, JJ and Kenseth.
Hamlin v. Logano? Who ya got? Word on the street is that Logano is a pretty good little driver.
Are we talking about driving or fighting? Hamlin in a landslide as a driver. Joey has a huge reach advantage as a fighter.
I'm getting sick of the negative feedback from the online demographic of NASCAR fans. The racing at Bristol has never been boring. Never. The night races have ALWAYS had great crowds so why do people think the lack of single file racing is the problem? Also why is it that one week fans are upset because there is single file racing (Phoenix), and 2 weeks later fans are upset because this isn't any single file racing (Bristol). To me the only issue facing the racing is the lack of a soft tire.
Chill a little Jeremy. Fans are fickle. But there wasn't anything wrong with the racing yesterday at Bristol.
Do you think NASCAR will fine Kenny Wallace for complaining about a $456/night Bristol area hotel room rate?
I wish more people would complain about hotel rates at places like Bristol. It's robbery, even if you stay at a dump.
Who's the next first time winner?
I'll say Aric Almirola.
Hey NASCAR Nation: just be quiet and watch the race.
Well thank you ghost of The Intimidator, although you never were one to be quiet about the racing.
Good run for Jamie Mac this weekend!! Your thoughts?
It looks like things are starting to turn around for Jamie. And it would have been better yesterday if not for the early accident.
I finally agree with Brad K. The old Bristol is never coming back and the new Bristol is fun to watch
Logano has two wins. Hamlin has over 20. Hamlin won 8 his 5th full season and has made the chase every year while Logano hasnt sniffed it. Is Joey picking a fight he cant win on the track?
It isn't about who's the best racer. Joey is standing up for himself. He's tired of getting pushed around as the young guy who doesn't get respect. He's doing what he has to do.
Do you think Kyle Busch will ever live up to expectations or will he always be known as the Master of the minors?
I hope he gets it done in Cup and leaves Nationwide to the regulars. Kyle has enormous talent, but he also makes mistakes at times that hurt his team.
so what you take on jrs good run this weekand at Bristol I thought he did pretty good normal he does not run good at Bristol but this time he did and what you take at California race for this weekand for jr....
Jr has an excellent chance at making 2013 his best season since moving to Hendrick. His best career season ever is a bigger chore. He finished 3rd in the 2003 standings and won six races in 2004. He won't win six races this year.
Do you think past criticism kept Larson from taking out KyBu?
I think Larson is learning as he goes and knew punting a Cup star probably wasn't in his best interest long term.
Who wins at Fontana and who finishes last? Excluding start and parkers of course
Kenseth is my pick to win there. Don't really care who finishes last.
I feel like Kenseth could easily win 5 races this year with how good that team is, what do you think?
Possible, but tough for anyone to win five times. I think Matt is a serious title contender. He was my pick to win the championship this year.
What is your honest assessment of Danica post Daytona?
Not very good obviously, but I'm not surprised. In her defense, SHR is struggling, also.
Do you think it's possible that a driver will stay close to the front in enough races to win a cup without winning a race? How much of a disaster would that be for NASCAR?
It wouldn't be good, but I don't see that happening. The one guy who might do it is Junior. I still beleive NASCAR should give a few more points for winning.
Can Biffle win a Cup title?
He can, but my guess is he won't.
For Fontana after Kenseth who you others 4 top picks and a darkhorse?
JJ, Gordon, Edwards, Hamlin. Darkhorse is Almirola.
Who finishes higher in points, Aric Almirola or Ricky Stenhouse Jr. Also, does either make the chase?
No Chase, but I'll go with Stenhouse to finish higher in the end because his team is better overall.
Logano is 12th in points and has shown some strong runs but has had a little bad luck. Do you see him making the chase this season?
No, but it's possible. I think having Brad as a teammate helps him.
What changes does Coach Gibbs need to make on the #18 team with Rowdy on a 31 race losing streak?
Concentrate on racing Cup and cut down on mental mistakes.
With Harvick already leaving and Budweiser likely to leave as well, Burton continuing his trend of being a field filler who finishes 20th to 30th each week, and his grand children still to raw to contend in Cup when they get there, what does Childress have to do for next season to turn his luck around?
They need equipment on par with Hendrick, Roush and Gibbs, which it isn't right now.
Hey Terry, great race on Sunday, got to love short-track racing, one of the best things NASCAR could ever do is add more short track events and less intermediates. It appears Hendrick and JGR have the speed with this new car so far, which teams have exceeded or come up short of expectations so far?
Stewart-Haas is a big disappointment so far. And Penske is better than I expected after switching manufacturers and no longer building its own engines.
With 3 of the next 4 tracks on the cookie cutter tracks that the Gen 6 was designed to improve the racing competitiveness, what does NASCAR or the teams need to do to deliver a better product with some green flag passing?
There was a lot more green-flag passing at Vegas, including a good battle for the win at the end. As the team's learn more about this car, it will continue to improve.
Hotel rates is the only reason why we didn't go to Bristol. It's like that around a lot of races.I don't know what can be done about it.
As long as fans are willing to pay it, it won't change. Look at it like this: If a hotel double it's normal rate, but is only half full, it still makes the same amount of money as if it sold out.
In terms of future scheduling, is there any momentum building to add a track to the schedule anywhere and if so, who might lose a date?
It's pretty stagnant for now. ISC wanted to build new tracks in Seattle, Denver and New York, but the economy changed all that.
Are we going to see a road course in the Chase during the 2014 season?
I'd say the odds are less than 50/50, but I hope so.
Would you say the Toyota Racing Development power plants produce greater horsepower that will really show up on the cookie cutter tracks like Atlanta and Charlotte?
Maybe, but that's a double-edge sword. It also could mean more blown engines.
Do you think Danica will be entered into doing a Camping World Truck Series race at Martinsville with her never racing at Martinsville?
No chance of that.
Is the Jeff Gordon, Pepsi Max Test Drive video real? It is a riot...
Great question. I tend to be a cynic on these things, so my guess is it's not entirely real. Just like reality TV is real.
Bristol used to be the toughest ticket around.Judging by the number of butts in the seats, hotel rooms should have been easy to come by in Bristol. What are the attendance figures, RE: percentage of capacity yesterday?
NASCAR no longer gives attendanmce estimates. But my guess is about 85,000. In any other situation, that's a good crowd, but knowing the place used out have 160,000, it's a big reduction.
You are Brian France for a day, what separate executive order would you issue to impact the drivers, the fans, and writers such as yourself respectively?
I said this last week. I would reduce the Cup schedule to 32 races. Much easier said than done.
Disappointing finish for both Jeff Gordon and Matt Kenseth yesterday. Is there anything the teams and/or Goodyear can do to prevent blown tires on the scale that we saw yesterday? And why was it mainly Chevy drivers blowing tires?
It all depends on how the teams set up the car and how many chances they take on tire wear. Kenny Francis didn't take those chance, which is a big reason Kahne won. Actually, I like it that the tires gave out. It adds strategy.
How much of attendance issues are tracks having 2 races? If tracks that can't sellout 2 only had 1, I bet they would sellout.
You're right. Texas sold out every race until it went to two events. Now it doesn't sell out either one. People pick and choose, especially in a tough economy. But from the track's perspective, two dates with 100,000 each are better than one with 150,000. And the more days the track is open for business, the more stuff it sells.
WIth Hamlin generating only negative press do you see Coach parting ways with Denny and maybe putting Kurt Busch in the #11?
Yes, this will happen. And the Astros will win the 2013 World Series.
Do tracks get part of the TV revenue or do they only make $ on tickets/parking/concessions?
Tracks get most of the TV revenue.
With Kurt on a 1 year deal @FR78racing and Harvick out the door at RCR are you hearing that Kurt will be running the RCR #29 in 2014?
No. That's a long way from being determined. And Richard has to make space for his grandsons soon.
Why don't tracks build their own hotels? They could then charge lower costs than what is being charged now. It would still put money in their pocket from the hotel and it would also lower the rates at competing hotels which would put more fans in the seats at the tracks.
A very expensive proposition. And who is going to stay there on non-race weekends?
so what was your take on denny Hamlin not paying the fine and I think he said that he is going to pay for it any ways if he was not going to pay for how many races do you think that he was going to be suspeneded for...
It was a way for everyone to get out of this and save face. Technically, Denny didn't pay the fine. It is deducted for race earnings. NASCAR realizes it overreacted and Denny didn't want to keep it in the news and distract his race team any longer.
What do you think Denny's problem with Joey is? There seems to be no respect there.
Apparently, these guys haven't liked each other for a long time, but they kept it under wraps when they were teammates. Who knows where it started.
Do you rate the Diloon brothers as having the same level of racing talent and skills as Kyle Larson?
I don't rate any young driver right now as having the same talent level as Larson.
Tiger Woods and Lindsey Vonn just confirmed their relationship. After this chat, will you be posting photos to confirm your relationship with Hope Solo?
Hope is a married woman now, so all hope is lost.
I'm somewhat new to being a Nascar fan. Everyone tells me the Fontana race is a snoozer. Why is that?
Because it's a huge track (2 miles) and very wide without a lot of banking. So the cars get spread out in a long race with long green-flag runs. There is passing, but the cars can do it without getting close to each other a lot of the time.
Kurt Busch in the Chase?
I thought he had a shot at it before the season started. I don't think so now.
Work keeps getting in the way today. So who do you like in March Madness? I'm thinking Louisville over Miami.
Louisville is the popular pick, but I hope Gonzaga has a good run and makes it to the final. The field is more wide open this year than ever before. For the first time in 36 years, the state of Texas doesn't have a team in the show.
Tony Stewart in the chase?
It's getting a little scary, but I still think he'll make it. Smoke runs really well in the summer months and probably will win at least two races. That might be enough.
Do you think Dodge will be back in a year or so?
Dodge will be back, but it will be more than a year or two.
Terry - Thanks again for this weekly chat. Always appreciate the number or questions you address and your direct answers, no matter the topic.
Thanks for joining in. Always one of my favorite things of the week. I'm out folks. Have a great week. Peace.
