We'll get rolling here in a sec...
How serious is the injury to Ikard? And what is the timeframe for his return?
Not too serious. Linemen break fingers and hands all the time. He'll be fine for the season, and if they wanted, there's a chance Ikard could come back at the end of spring and get some time in at guard. Don't know if they'd want to risk that. But the good thing is that Ikard is a proven player, and he'll be fine for the season.
With Kendal Thompson running with the 2s does that mean he has the edge over Trevor Knight?
Thompson and Knight both got time with the 1s yesterday. Thompson is older, so he has the seniority when it comes to working with the first and second teams. That's the way I read it. It's very early.
How can the Sooners run a 3-4 defense if 2 out of the 6 LB that are practicing with Kish are walk-ons?
In a true 3-4, at least one of the DEs lines up at OLB. So all Kish would need is 3. So far, the Sooners have running a 4-2-5 exclusively, and Kish actually has a decent rotation right now with Shannon, Nelson, Franklin, Striker.
With Gabe Ikard injured, I know that Ty Darlington becomes the #1 center. Who would be the #2 center right now?
Austin Woods has experience there. He'd be the second option.
I hate the NCAA Clearinghouse. When is DJ Ward going to be cleared to practice? OU needs him BAD.
If I could predict when the NCAA cleared players, I'm sure Saban would hire me to work in Alabama's player personnel department.
It sounds like Chuka Ndule was moved to DT. Is this a temporary move just to have more DT during spring ball or have the coaches moved Ndule permanently?
It's not temporary. I think they want to develop Chuka into a David King-type player, a guy who can swing back and forth from DT to DE depending on the matchup.
I read a blogger who claimed Cortez Johnson to be the most impressive player after 2 practices. Do you agree with that assessment?
Practice is closed to the media, but I have had several people tell me that he's been a competitor out there. Cortez has good size for a corner, and can be really physical. So far, that's exactly what he's doing out there.
How do you see OU performing next season with Gabe Lynn at FS, Quentin Hayes at SS, and Julian Wilson and NB? Mike Stoops didn't seem to worried about it. In fact, it sounded as if his biggest concern was finding a CB opposite Aaron Colvin.
Yeah, I'm a little more worried than Mike appears to be.
How disappointing will it be if Baylor wins and OU loses this week and we end up in NIT?
Devastating. Odds are against it. But it's not unthinkable. OU best handle Iowa State.
do you think metoyer will become more impacting this year
Oh yeah. I'm a big Metoyer guy. He's got a tremendous skill set. Sometimes it doesn't click for true freshmen. I'm betting it clicks for him soon.
will we be able to recruit more consistently in blue chip areas with the new coaches we brought in
That's the plan. All three assistants have strong recruiting reputations, who have done it different parts of the country, including the South. We'll see if they can make better inroads.
What do the players have to say about the qb derby after their first two days of practice?
Talking to players after their third practice, Tuesday. I'll let you know then.
If the Madden and NCAA covers were chosen based on what player had the best season the year before, who would your cover picks be?
AD and Johnny Football.
Why was Damon Williams dismiss from team was it due to field production or off field issues..
How far down the depth chart do you think St. John will end up
He's probably the third OT, behind LT Tyrus Thompson, and RT Daryl Williams. Both those guys have played some good football, so they'll be tough to unseat. But St. John will be a factor, if only as the first OT off the sideline.
How did OU's junior day on Saturday go? Any big names make an appearance?
Bob has a thorough report from junior day on our forum.
Any players already standing out this early in spring drills?
Cortez Johnson is definitely one name I've heard. Dannon Cavil, physically, has been impressive. It'll be easier to answer once the team goes in full pads this week.
Was my posterizing dunk last night as good as Blake Griffin's over Kendrick Perkins?
Way better. For one, your dunk was actually a dunk (Blake's was more like a hard, comedown layup). Poor Brandon Knight. Give him credit for actually playing D there. Lot of guys would have bailed on that situation.
On Tuesday, Tim Kish worked with only 6 LB: C. Nelson, A. Franklin, F. Shannon, E. Striker, C. Gastelum, and L. Taylor. Does this mean that P.L. Lindley and Rashard Favors will be playing DE exlusively?
Is there any players that you suspect are contemplating transferring, Roy Finch perhaps?
Tend to think if Roy was planning to transfer he would have done it already. Roy is going to be a senior. Suspect he'll finish out his career here.
do you see any guys wanting to transfer at the end of spring if they don't think they'll see playing time, ie. running back? if so, who?
Always possible, but I don't see anyone in the backfield leaving.
Johnny Football is still playing in college and therefore is not eligible for the cover. Pick again.
You said pick the players that had the best seasons, regardless of eligibility. I would have gone with Manti Te'o before the Catfish-Gate. Collin Klein, maybe?
How do you like the coaching changes i made, would you have done anything different
I didn't think Patton deserved to go. OU has been spectacular protecting the passer, despite numerous injuries in recent years. Patton was recruiting the type of players to fit the OU scheme, which was finesse, pass-blockers. Hard to fault him too much for not having the run-blocking maulers, when OU went 4 and 5 wide most of the time in the Landry Jones era.
Do you know where Drew Allen will transfer to ?
Don't think he knows yet. Still working through his options.
Does OKC get it done in San Antonio tonight against the depleted Spurs?
Let's hope so.
will the spring game be aired?
I asked the other day, and was told a decision hadn't been made yet. But I can't imagine it won't be. What are they going to do, show a volleyball rerun instead? I'll be sure to follow up on this tomorrow when we meet with Stoops.
Jake, I'm really starting to get worried. I see Bob is asking you for advice about the new hires.
Haha, you should be worried.
Jake , do you think we will see some Zone coverages this year, or will we be working strictly in man to man again? Any Idea if zone has been worked on in practice so far?
Mike Stoops is a man-to-man guy. If Bob wanted to run zone, he should have kept Venables, who was a Cover 2 guy.
Did you say that D. Williams was kicked out because of his production? What does that mean? Williams was not practicing hard enough or coaches realized that he had limited talent/ability?
I wasn't in the room when the decision was made, but I'm led to believe both sides agreed that Damon was never going to get a chance to play.
Any commits on junior day?
Nope, at least not yet.
Should the Sooners be concerned about Foreman jumping ship?
What are the chances that oklahoma holds onto Foreman or will he commit somewhere else
Seemed like he had a good time in College Station. With the way Sumlin has been recruiting, I'd be a little nervous.
Is Quincy Russell participating in spring drills? Do you anticpate him earning a spot in the 2013 DT rotation?
No, he's not in Norman yet. If he ever makes it to campus, then yes, I expect him to earn a spot. Who else is there?
What do you know about the new GA hire? Can he help?
Chip Viney. He replaces Ryan Walters, who was the de facto CB coach last year. With Bobby Jack coaching corners now, I'm guessing Viney will be helping there, and with nickelbacks.
Is the TCU game--sandwiched in between Notre Dame and Texas-- the biggest trap game of the season?
Right now, the Thursday night Baylor game scares me. Home dogs playing on Thursday nights have fared well over the years. TCU is in Norman.
How do you see Alex Ross being used next season?
Williams and Clay are going to get the majority of the carries, followed by Millard. The QB is going to run the ball, too, you would think (or hope). But Williams and Clay will be gone in 2014, so OU would be wise to get Ross some experience. I think he'll be used similar to the way Brandon Williams was two seasons ago.
Is there big danger of Quincy Russell not qualifying? I thought he only needed like a class or two.
Sounds like he'll be here. But when it comes to jucos, I don't predict anything until they are physically on campus. Call it the Courtney Gardner rule.
During the OU press confress i heard Stoops say there would be 3 more DT'S coming in this summer? I thought there were 4 coming in?
I don't have the transcript in front of me. But there's Walker, Romar and Huggins. Then Russell. That's four. Maybe he was saying 3 high school DTs?
I love the Gardner rule kinda looked forward to Gardner playin in Crimson and Cream
With all the players that have left the program in the last few weeks, how big of a class will the Sooners get for 2013?
In the 22-25 range. By my count, OU has 84 players on scholarship, one less than the 85 limit. With 17 players in this senior class, that's 67. Add a couple defections, and you're looking at something in the low 20s. Assuming my math is right, which it very well might not be.
Do you think that Tim Kish is on the hot seat?
How much of the OU's recruiting troubles do you account to the poor bowl performances under Bob Stoops?
Very little. Recruits are rarely swayed by the events of one or two games. More about the coaches, the tradition, the fan support, the facilities, and who puts players in the league.
seems like theres open competion for the QB'S but not for the RB'S? seeing how Williams, & Clay are 1
Correct. OU returns its RBs. Not its QB. Thus the impetus for a competition.
Jake, when will the injury bug leave Norman? Seems every year the OL gets hit hard
Yep. As I was reporting the story, I asked one of my sources if it was Ikard's left or right hand. His response: Which hand do you think? And of course it was his snapping hand. The o-line can't catch a break.
Hey Jake...usually Junior Day=commits! Was the drought due to coaching changes with new evaluations or is there some level of concern going forward?
There were some kids that probably would have committed had they been offered. Clear the staff is still evaluating. Wouldn't hit the panic button yet. Talent is overflowing in the states of Oklahoma and Texas, which usually translates into strong recruiting classes for the Sooners.
I saw that parker is taking a visit to Texas do u think oklahoma still could get him to commit later on
(Steven Parker, safety, Jenks). Definitely.
Will I get to start somewhere next year?
Let's hope so. The NFL is more entertaining with a starting Tebow vs. a third-string Tebow.
Which newcomer will have the biggest in Norman this season?
My picks are Stanvon Taylor and Hatari Byrd.
Who would you pick as the top 3 OU WR based soley on talent and experience? I'd say J. Saunder, Jaz and Sterling Shepard.
If those are the only two categories I can factor in, it's hard to argue with your rankings.
Randle removed the Sooners from his list of possible schools. How soon do you think it will take this year's success to pay dividends on the recruiting trail?
Should help with this next class. A run in the tournament would really help.
Jake, tell Bob thanks for the JR day updates. "INSIDER" is definitely worth it!
Will do, Dave.
Who has the worst QB situation? Texas or the Jets?
The Jets. At least Texas knows who its QB is going to be.
Who do you like better Lj moore or Hatari Byrd i like Byrd
Are you really picking to Freshman to start in our secondary against these offenses. WOW, if this is true the Sooners are in biiiiiiiiiiiiiig trouble.
We'll see. It's definitely possible.
If Blake Bell is not chosen as the starting QB, do you think he transfers?
With OU seeming to choke in a lot of big BCS bowl games, how do you think they will fare in the new playoff system?
Man, we are closing the chat with some hyper-negative questions.
Why are the spring practices closed? It's not like they are installing game plans or anything, SoonerNation just wants something to be positive about.
Paranoia abounds in the sport of college football.
Who is projected to go #1 overall in the NBA draft this year?
Sounding like Marcus Smart has a chance.
Is this my worst year since '99?
No. But it will be the lowest the Sooners will start in the preseason rankings since 2000.
didnt oklahoma get a 4 star CB transfer last year from like notre dame
Tee Shepard. Actually enrolled in junior college. OU will have another shot at him down the line.
OU has a less than impressive home schedule this year, especially with how weak the Big 12 appears to be. If they struggle early on in the year, is the sellout streak in trouble?
Jake the Sky is falling and Norman is burning down. Some people are really "Glass is empty" type of folks.
And you remember what happened in 2000 right?
The Cotton Bowl is not a "big BCS bowl game"...it is more like the New Hampshire primaries...
Do I get my second Big 12 championship this year?
I like your chances, given that you get OU and TCU in Stillwater (or Suckwater, as you call it).
next year ill probably be the one to get the boot wouldnt surprise me
Man, will there be any players or coaches left in Norman after this upcoming purge you all are predicting?
Do you like the move of B.J. Wright to CB?
Yeah I do. Gives Mike a chance to take a more overarching look at the defense, instead of focusing so much on the secondary.
Montgomery have the hardest job this year?
Looks pretty hard to me.
Bring it Bob
Jake, in all fairness, you are closing this chat with some hyper-negative analysis. Starting two True Freshman in our secondary is a recipe for winning 7 games
What if it's 3 freshmen? Not unthinkable.
Man TCU is good aren't they?
Ask Bill Self.
im gonna start a true freshman a qb too
No. Let's not get carried away.
Oh no I just got hit with pieces of the sky. Run for your lives! LOL
Thanks for the chat always great!
Thanks Jeff. We'll do the chat again next Monday, same time, same place. Stay with SoonerNation for your spring ball coverage, as we'll have a bunch of updates on the site this week from practice and OU's pro day. Until we do this again, everyone have a great week.
