Greetings chatters. Welcome to our day-long affair. I'm happy to be batting lead off and I hope I can be a table setter for the prestigious lineup to come.
Are Texans reworking J.Joseph and A.Johnsons contracts and most likely cutting K.Walter?
Don't know for sure. I would imagine they would rework at least one of those two deals -- Andre Johnson or Johnathan Joseph -- to free up some money. And Walter's time seems up, no matter the depth of Gary Kubiak's love for him.
Where does Dwight Freeney end up?
I've thought Atlanta would be a good match from the start. Now I'd maybe put Denver atop the list.
Last year going into free agency there was a lot of talk of the Bears going after Vincent Jackson and Mario Williams. We know the positions they're going to target this year with OL and TE most likely, but what specific names are being mentioned? Last name I heard was Jake Long...
Have heard a lot of talk about Titans TE Jared Cook being a primary Bears target.
Are the Colts going to go after a big name receiver?
Don't overrate big names. They might. Certainly they are going to add a guy, be it in free agency or the draft. They need to upgrade over Donnie Avery and set themselves up for life after Reggie Wayne, when that arrives.
Unlike past seasons, the Titans seem ready and willing to sign many free agents, already signing their own kicker and Geoge wilson. Who do you think they will target next?
Their top target it going to be Andy Levitre, the guard from Buffalo.
With the Broncos most likely moving away from Elvis, and freeing up a bunch of cap room, do you see them really making some big moves, or just filling holes as they see fit? And is Freeny the best DE out there to replace Elvis?
I'm a bit wary of an aging guy who's played inside on turf his whole career. But Freeney can still get by a tackle and apply pressure. Not a long-term solution.
It seems like the Houston Texans are one of the top teams in the league who still need some playmakers, shouldn't they be looking at Mike Wallace and Wes Welker? Also, on the bottom rung, the Chiefs seem to be the team who can make the quickest turnaround now that they have an actual coach. Who should they be looking at? Wallace and Welker as well? I think the Chiefs could be in the playoffs this year or the next, so if I was a free agent I don't think I would be afraid of going there.
The Texans don't have anything close to the kind of money it would take to get Wallace or Welker. You'll have to wait on Bill Williamson for better info on Kansas City.
Would you like the Jags taking Lattimore in the 3rd or 4th round as an understudy to MJD this year while he gets healthy and then taking over next season? Seems to me that'd be an ideal situation for both player and team...
Would be a patient move. Hard to take a guy who's unlikely to be able to do much this season. But not impossible.
What positions do you expect the colts to sign in free agency?
Offensive line, outside linebacker. corner.
Who do the Browns have on there radar in free Agency? Do you see them being a big player in Free Agency this year?
They will be big players in free agency.
Are the Colts looking at either Reggie Bush or Michael Turner, they havent had a decent every down back since Edgerrin James. Thoughts?
Spending money on running backs is out of vogue, and should be. Michael Turner seems done to me.
Colts need Offensive line help! Who are they looking at?
Have heard lots of Louis Vazquez, and a bit about Andy Levitre. Have not heard specifics on a tackle target.
Would the Colts rather have kruger or avril!? I'm thinking Avril...your thoughts?
I don't know why they'd want Avril, when he's played in a 4-3. Why try to convert a guy rather than just getting a 3-4 guy like Kruger?
The Colt's have several defensive issues, but need help on the o-line. Do you think they'll go free agency on the o-line and go heavy on D for the draft?
Doesn't have to be one or the other. They can get help on both sides of the ball in free agency.
Read a tweet recently that quoted an unnamed source saying that 98% of what we are hearing pre-free agency is bunk. Wouldn't surprise me one bit. Your thoughts?
That number is high. But a lo of it is smoke, sure. It's what agents do, particularly in a window when no one is really holding them in check.
Which safety do you prefer for the colts
I think Glover Quin would be a nice fit. Young, versatile, not as pricey as the very top guys.
The Jaguars have essentially gutted their secondary. I know the draft has a lot of talented DBs, but do Caldwell and Bradley have their eyes on any free agents to fill the gaps left by Landry, Ross, Mathis and (probably) Cox?
Teh Jaguars have more holes than can be filled by one drat. With their cap room they can certainly add some second-tier free agents. I understand why they won't jump out and break the bank for anyone. Old regime did that with Dawan Landry, and look where the franchise would up with him.
What are the odds of the packers signing Stephen Jackson
I don't know, but I'd sure like to see that.
Of Freeney, Avril and Umenyiora, who would you say the Falcons make a big play for and which one do you believe fits better in the ATL scheme?
I would think there is some appeal in youth. I'd go Avril, Freeney, Osi in that order.
It's typically easier to plug a rookie DB into the starting lineup than it is with rookie o-lineman. Do you think Grigson is thinking along those lines in regards to free agency? I would love to see the Colts sign Adam Jones though. Would be a huge help to Bethea and V. Davis, IMO.
You're talking to the wrong guy if you are looking for any sort of endorsement of Pacman Jones.
I think the Colts should go after Conner Barwin and save some $ for other positions.
He might be good. Or 2011 might have been a flash. He was not very good last year at all.
With us needing a veteran LB, wouldn't James Harrison be a nice upgrade(over Witherspoon) and fit for the Titans?
No. He's a 3-4 guy and an outside guy. The Titans have two good, young, OLBs for their 4-3. Look beyond the name.
Do you see the texans updating the right side of the o line in the draft or during free agency?
I fear they won't do anything.
LG continues to show up as a need for the Jags. What happened to Will Rackley, 3rd round pick two years ago? Why has everyone already written him off?
He missed last season hurt. When an unproven guy disappears hurt for a season it's pretty easy to overlook him.
if TN were to land Levitre, would Warmack still be an option they look at at #10 in the draft? interior line problem solved for quite a few years that way. Thx.
Yes. Though I suspect if they land Levitre, they'd be more likely to Larry Warford of Kentucky in the second round.
Thoughts on Andre Smith in a Colts uniform? Weight issues sure, but great run blocking RT who was very solid for Cincy.
He's not the guy I'd want. Give him a bunch of money and you have to fear he's at the buffet, no?
I've been reading reports the Titans are in the hunt for Umenyiora, Freeney, Abraham, etc. What do you think are the chances of them picking ANY of those guys are?
Slim. I think they are more likely to wait on DE until the draft. But I obviously cannot say for sure.
say Houston fails to sign Quinn AND Barwin - which position do you think would be addressed in free agency and which is addressed in the draft?
Safety would be a much bigger concern. But I couldn't say which avenue they'd use to address which hole. Imagine they'd draft one of each.
IMO, the Colts need OG, RT, SS, CB, and OLB. Even though they have money to spend, how many positions can they realistically fill through FA? There seem to be a lot of OTs and CBs.
They can fill three or three and a half of those in free agency if they so desire.
wouldnt getting levitre AND warmack be the best case scenario for the titans? it would establish a solid run game and protect locker who is still young and needs time to throw
Yeah, that's a great scenario. But does it come at the expense of fixing anything else?
Could Chris Houston and Greg Toler be the best value CBs in Free Agency this year? Any chance Indy signs either?
I like Toler and could see him in Indy. But that's based on me seeing a fit, not anything I've heard from the inside.
What do the Titans do if they miss out on Levitre?
Pat the bucks will have about what 37 million in cap space if they release Eric wright with the new cap minimums going into effect who are they going to spend all of that money n? There's not that many great free agents out there
Look at Louis Vasquez and Brandon Moore.
Why would the Colts let go of one 4-3 end (Freeney) to go after another (Avril)?
Andy, more like $41 million if they release Wright. They'll spend it. Got to fix that secondary, maybe get a TE and an LB and some depth on the D-line. Also, maybe a slot receiver. Plus a contract extension for Mike Williams.
I don't think they will. But one is a lot younger than the other.
Would Phil Loadholt be a good option and value for the Colts or Bears for their tackle needs?
Great option, sure. Value? Don't know, he's should be pretty expensive.
All right, let's switch over to NFC South. Thanks to Paul for running the AFC part of the show.
Pat, The saints are starting to worry me. Any word on their plans to get under the cap? I'm sure they will by the deadline, just really anxious to know how!
Colts/Luck could use a guy like Mike Wallace, Wayne isn't forever young.
Would have fit better with Bruce Arians than he will with Pep Hamilton.
No word yet. But they could already have restructured contracts and are just waiting to turn them in. Sure we'll hear more as the day goes on.
Any chance Titans land both Bennett brothers to Fix TE and DE. Better question is can they afford those moves with LeVitre?
Pat. Do you think the panthers will be successful in restructuring Jordan gross' contract?
They could afford it if they wanted to. I don't think they are going to chase the cute story of signing brothers.
Very possible. That's the scenario Mel Kiper Jr. has in his latest mock draft.
Pat, could the bucs go after Cary Williams?
Would think he's one of multiple possibilities at CB.
Pat any news on revis to tampa?
With the Jags possibly releasing Dereck Cox, would you think DeAngelo Hall could be a good replacement?
Nothing yet. But stay tuned.
With ATL having such a good year and considered by many a potential contender, do you see this as a incentive for Jackson, Bush and Bradshaw to consider coming to ATL? Which one do you see fitting best in ATL?
He's a pain in the butt and overrated.
If they go that route (and not the draft), I say Jackson is the best fit.
Hey Pat, any updates on the Falcon's cap space as Free Agency opens up? I feel like we had a lot of money to spend, and surely TD made Moore's contract cap friendly.
They were $20 million under before Moore and Reynolds. Haven't seen exact cap figures on those two yet.
I now turn you over to Pat Yasinskas. Nice chatting with you.
what are the chances revis will come to the falcons
Zero. Not happening. Tampa Bay maybe.
Am i coming back this season?!?
I've thought you were coming back all along. Get out of the chat and go sign the contract and make it official!!!
Is Dashon Goldson gonna be a BUC next year?
Sounds like they're making a strong run at him and they've got the cap room to get him.
Common belief among the fans is that the saints pass on the first round of free agency due to our tight cap situation, but if we open 10-15 million in room, do you see them pursuing at least one big name for around 5-6 million a year?
Could see them making one or two splash moves.
Rumors now about the Bucs going hard after Avril. What sense does it make to let Bennet walk and then go after him? Smoke and mirrors or legit?
I don't think that one is legit. I think they're planning on Bowers and Clayborn as their two starters.
Any update on Grimes or Baker back to ATL?
Nothing yet, but still have a long day ahead of us.
Pat, I think you thought before falcons might pursue Jared Cook, is his price tag to high at this point?
I've never said that. I've thought all along that Gonzalez will come back.
Is Chase Daniel on his way to the Chiefs?
There are definitely some strong rumblings about that possibility.
Pat, the jermon bushrod situation is becoming precarious. We cannot afford to give him elite left tackle money, nor do I believe he is worth quite that much. But if he walks, much like Carl nicks, is there an affordable, serviceable left tackle available in free agency that could play in black and gold? (there won't be one available at 15 in the draft!)
Maybe they throw Charles Brown out there and see if he was worth the draft pick they spent on him.
What about the Falcon's interest in TB's DE Bennett? Any shot there?
That might make some sense. He's relatively young and a good all-around DE. But not sure he's an elite pass rusher.
Why do the Saints stay with Harper, considering his cap number and the available safeties on the market? Are they thinking he could play an OLB role?
There would be a pretty good cap hit if they release him.
Does Matt Ryan's new deal potentially have the ability to re-open any cap room for this year to go get an Avril or high price player?
Yes, depending on how they structure it, they could open up some cap room for this year because he already is carrying a huge cap number.
What do you think the Falcon's most likely move will be today? Will they pick up a big name like Umenyiora or SJax?
Think their biggest move will be re-signing one (or two) of their own.
Carrying the torch for Who Dat Nation this morning! We have heard rumblings about Harrison "liking" the saints, but how much will he demand at this stage of his career after being cut?
Sounds like Harrison to NOLA is an extreme long shot.
Any chance the Bucs go after falcons cb grimes? Do you think he could fit in Tampa?
I suspect he's one of the CBs they're after.
Saints and Brent Grimes? Maybe James Harrison?
No way Saints will have cap room for Grimes.
If Tony Gonzalez is only signed to a 1-year deal, and this is his last season, will all the compensation be a hit to 2013's cap for ATL?
Yep, it would almost certainly be just a one-year deal.
Pat have you heard rumblings that the Saints and Bucs are interested in Abraham? I would hate to have to face him and Lofton twice a year, even if only a year or two..!
Yes, rumblings on both. But a lot of other teams also interested, supposedly.
Folllowing up on the TG question: so if he signed a $7mm 1-yr deal, it's a $7mm hit to ATL's cap space, ALL in 2013?
is TB looking at any help on the Oline if FA?
Perhaps a right tackle.
From one former pro bowler to another, Ed Reed is a homer, and self proclaimed saints fan for life. Any chance he returns home to finish out his career?
I would not rule that one out.
Could the Bucs go after Harrison at LB or do you think they pursue someone younger, possible in the draft?
Think they will go younger.
Any idea if there were inquiries made from other teams (than Atlanta) for Grimes and/or Baker over the weekend?
Grimes definitely. Baker, not so sure. At least I didn't hear of any.
Can Tampa resign Bennett and sign Revis?
Tampa has the cap space to do pretty much anything it wants.
do you see the Bucs going after a RB in free agency? a seasoned vet would be a great mentor for Martin. Or do they stay young behind him.
Does Martin need a mentor? Looked like he picked it up pretty well last year. Just need some young, healthy legs behind him.
Why is TB so down on Bennett, to the point of letting him walk? Why not at least try sign and trade?
They've got high draft picks tied up in Clayborn and Bowers.
LaGarrette Blount. Any chance he re-signs with TB?
He already re-signed. But there are rumors Bucs are trying to trade him.
We have possibly 38 million in cap space who are we going to spend all of this ,money on?
You need to get your figures straight, Mr. GM. You've got $32.4 million right now. If you cut Wright, you can add $7.75 million to that.
any truth to the Sean Smith to TB rumor,
Think they're at least looking at four or five CBs and he's one of them.
Don't post my questions but you post one up about LaGarrette Blount who resigned yesterday... WTF IS THIS
He re-signed Friday. Send your question again please. I don't see them all and didn't see your previous one.
Why did the Falcons release me?
$$$ and age.
I've heard of the June 1st designation for release. Could this be applied to Roman Harper to help ease that cap hit this year instead of waiting until next year?
Possible. But the problem there is they have to carry his full cap hit until June 1. After June 1, it would be split.
You think Tampa Bay might sign a free-agent wide reciever to add to the combo of Vincent Jackson and Mike Williams?
Think they will be looking for a slot receiver. Oh, and a tight end.
Any chance the Panthers make some noise in FA?
Extremely doubtful, unless you can find a way to free up some cap room.
Is it true Tony G wants to come back for $7 million or is it just a rumor?
Think that's pretty accurate.
Can you answer a question for a team other than the Bucs? Geez. What are some names that you could see the Panthers pursuing?
I just did. Panthers don't have cap room to be major players.
How's the market been for Abe? Any chance he returns to the birds and teams up with a newly signed DE?
Bill... What does your gut tell you who Denver is going to get for sure in free agency.
Think there's an outside shot at that. But I think someone else will give him decent money. All right, I'm going to hand it over to Bill Williamson of AFC West fame. Thanks for stopping by.
They are an interesting team to watch. I think the in end they are going to try to get two or three starters. I think we may see some good players coming to Denver.
Is Aqib Talib a possibility in Denver?
The Broncos are looking for a CB and Talib is one of the best. But there are going to be some bargains at the posiiton. All four teams in the AFC West are looking for a CB and the Chiefs already signed Dunta Robinson. It will be an interesting posiiton to watch.
Bill, Why hasnt Cassel been cut yet?
Excellent question. Don't get it. He is cooked there.
Bill, whats the Dumervil situation?
Could get some resolution today. His agent has asked for him to be cut by the start of free agency (we have less than five hours) if he is going to be cut.
Hey Bill. What would Denver need to give up in order to get me?
Probably the No. 28 pick, maybe a little more, a new contract for you.
Since this is a deep defensive draft and the Raiders need help defensively. Do you think the Raiders will trade next year's 2nd round pick to someone for a 2nd rounder this year?
Reggie is not big on getting rid of draft choices. i think he is looking forward to finally having a full complement of choices next year.
bw,dumervill as a 3-4 OLB in San Diego?
Possible. He had success in that scheme. He will get a lot of action.
With DEN most likely cutting Dumervil, who is the most likely replacement - Freeney, Abraham, Umeniora or Harrison?
It seems like it may be Freeney. Frnakly, he's not as good as Duemrvil at this point. So, maybe they'd try to add two players.
Chances the Raiders address D-Line in free agency, then draft Dee Milliner instead of Sharrif Floyd?
It really depends on who is kept and who is brought in. I think the Raiders have so many needs that iot wil be a work in progress and by the time the draft comes around, they will take the ebst available player, likely on defense.
Is this the NFC SOUTH chat or what'
It's the AFC West's turn now. All aprt of the marathon.
Any rumors on what value Dumervil would bring in a trade and why would they release him instead of a trade?
Denver is probably gaging interest now. tough to trade a guy when the expectation is he will be cut. That's why Boldin was only worth a sixth-round pick.
Bill, where are some potential landing spots for Dumervil?
Anywhere. He will be popular.
Is Carson Palmer going to be cut by the Raiders?
Great question. The longer it takes, the longer it makes me wonder if there are complicaitons. We should learn something very soon, I'd think.
Bill, I've seen reports saying that Jackson to the Broncos is "already pretty much done" any truth to this?
Are we talking Steven Jackson? The Broncos have been connected to him. But Atlanta has been considred a big favorite.
think james harrison will end up anywhere?
If I had to guess, I'd say New England.
Billy Boy....where do the likes of Mike Harris, Johnnie Troutman, COlin Baxter and David Molk fit into the Bolts future? Backups, future starters, etc?
Young guys who will be evaulated by the new regime. I think Troutman and Molk coluld have futures. Harris did some nice things in a tough situation.
Any chance the Bills re-sign Levitre?
The Chargers would love to take him off their hands.
Any chance Chiefs land Welker or Wallace in FA?
You never know with the Chiefs this year, but after signing Bowe to a huge deal, I'd doubt it.
I'd like to see CHARGERS sign a solid backup RB for Ryan Matthews, any chance they could get Beanie Wells or Reggie Bush?
Wells has a history with new OC Ken Whisenhunt, but I've been told Whisnehunt likes Wells, but doesn't love him. But he does fit the mold the CHargers need.
Do the Raiders release the plague in the middle once free agency hits or hold on to him?
I assume we're talking about Rolando McClain?Yeah, he's probably gone today or tomorrow.
Do you expect to see any dropoff from Manning next season due to age?
I think he has a couple mroe strong seasons.
Any word on Antoine Cason and where ever he is headed?
Detroit, Carolina and Cleveland could all be possibilities.
moreno needs to get cut and so does mcgahee.. who would you see being the RB for the broncos in 2013? mendenhall?
Mendenhall is on their list.
Is there a chance the Chiefs try to upgrade on Moeaki in free agency? He's got a history of being injury-prone and you need a couple of pass catching TEs with Alex Smith as your QB.
I can see them adding another TE. But Moeaki has skills. Shouldn't give up on him yet.
Hey Bill....if you were Raiders GM, what specifically be your dream draft scenario?
Bill, what are the odds the raiders resign Bryant and shaugnessy?
I think Bryant is a higher prioirity.
Can denver add Loadholt
He is a local year. Could be a solid fit. Move Frnaklin inside.
Will SD sign any of their CBs or will they both walk?
Odds are he probably walks.
Will KC target a WR in the draft or FA?
Probably look for one in both FA and the draft.
Good half hour. Talk to you later. Enjoy the frenzy.
Ashley, do you think the Vikings came out OK in their trade of Percy Harvin to Seattle? I think this is a win-win trade for both teams. Do you agree?
Well, Al, I guess, if you consider he wasn't happy and wanted a new deal. They got a first-round pick, which is good. But man, they need receivers. Must be a priority in free agency and the draft.
Are the Chiefs not cutting Cassel until the trade for Alex Smith becomes official? I dont see any other reason why they would hang on to him. Thats a lot of money to pay a back-up!
It is only a matter of time at this point. They won't bring him back.
Hey Ashley. Who do you think will be the first 'big' name to sign? Do you expect immediate action at 3PM ET?
Well, the new league year starts at 4 p.m. ET, not 3. I'd like to think Mike Wallace lands somewhere quickly, but he's the only free agent likely to get a huge payday. We'll see if Miami gets it done.
What do you think happens with Urlacher?
I think he ends up back in Chicago. We'll see.
Ashley, where do you think Tebow lands this year? Jets? CFL?
Ha. Nice to hear from you, John. No market for him.
Ashley, where do you think Charles Woodson lands?
With a team that needs a veteran leader. Not going to pay a whole lot though.
What will the Patriots do, are there any big name signings possible?
I think Wallace to New England is awfully intriguing. Would give them the speed they lack at the position and stretch the field. It is interesting that there hasn't been much news on Welker. They've got money tied up in several offensive players. There's only so much to go around, so if they were to pursue Wallace that could mean Welker is odd man out. Going to be interesting to see how that plays out.
Ashley what moves or who do you expect the eagles to go after?
Well, I expect them to release Asomugha soon. And DRC is a free agent. So obviously they need corners. Could also use offensive line help. I know fans in Philly are intrigued by Revis, but I don't know, given what happened the last time they went after big-name corners, if they'll be willing to try that again, especially given that Revis is coming off the ACL injury.
Ashley, is there anybody you hearing might get paid significantly more than most fans would expect?
Doubt it. Money is tight. Cleveland has the most cap room. Miami and Indy also have room. New Orleans is making room. But surprising money? I don't see it.
Who starts in Philly, Vick or Foles?
Vick. In the short term. Don't see Foles fitting in to what they want to do, but it is all still sort of a mystery. Lots of changes there.
What do you think the 49ers end up doing at safety? Resign Goldson to a deal or sign Ed Reed to a deal and draft a safety to learn behind him for a year or two?
I would think Goldson will attract more money elsewhere. Reed would be intriguing and fill a need. He just hired an agent after not having one for a while, which I think is telling. But he's not a long-term solution.
Ashley, what team do you see making the most noise in free agency?
Cleveland, Miami, Indy. The preferred route is building through the draft, of course.
What move(s) will the Texans make?
They need wide receiver and defensive back help. From ESPN Stats & Info, an interesting stat on the Texans last season: They were one of four teams where their most-targeted receiver had more targets than all their other receivers combined. Andre Johnson's 158 targets made up 58.1 percent of the Texans pass attempts to WRs, the highest rate in the league. That shows how much they need WR help.
Ashley, Any truth to the Palmer to Arizona scenario?
I don't know. I don't think he is that big of an upgrade. Going to be interesting to see who they release though. Kevin Kolb? Probably.
Steven Jackson in Atlanta; Yes or no?
I guess maybe. They like the young guy they've got. I'd rather see them spend some money on the defensive side of the ball, assuming that TG comes back. They desperately need pass rushers who can help close out games. They probably would've reached the Super Bowl last season had they had that.
How does the Giants sign of Cullen Jenkins change what they doe in FA/draft?
They, too, need help getting to the quarterback, as I'm sure Graziano can touch on when he gets here in a minute. I really like Jenkins. He's a standup guy, a good locker room guy. But he's getting some age on him. I can't imagine the Giants are done there.
My guess is Welker and Gibson to the Pats, Lloyd is let go. Thoughts?
I think it's still too early to tell.
What do you make of Jeffery Lurie attending a scouting workout of Geno Smith? In your time covering the eagles has he ever done that?
I want to say he has, but I can't swear to it. What I make of it is there has been an enormous shift in who is making the decisions for Philly now that Reid has gone. And Smith would be a significant signing. Lurie is probably just continuing to build a relationship with his new head coach.
Who are your first five picks in the upcoming draft?
What's up, everybody? Anything going on today?
This is the first draft in recent memory where it is virtually impossible to pick the order of the first five. I would expect KC to go OL, and then the dominoes will fall from there.
Handing off to Dan now. Thanks for the questions. Enjoy the day.
What are the chances the Eagles make a big splash in free agency? For example signing Talib, Amendola, and Cook.
I know some Eagles fans are leery of this possibility, since the free-agent spree they went on two years ago didn't work out too well. But they do have a lot of needs and a lot of cap room. The names you throw out there all make sense on their own, and they can afford to sign as many free agents as they want. I think they'll be aggressive, but err on the younger side.
Welcome to the party, Dan. Cowboys. I think they need a new GM. What do you think?
It's not a question worth debating. No one in the universe has more job security than the Cowboys' GM.
Do the Redskins have any chance of signing Talib with there CAP situation?
My guess is the Talib interest is a smokescreen and that they're working on someone else you haven't necessarily thought of. Think about last year, when everybody was thinking Vincent Jackson and they got Pierre Garcon.
Chances cowboys trade Spencer by the draft?
They're not going to trade Spencer.
What do the Giants do if somebody offers Cruz a ridiculous contract? If they can't match the offer due to cap space what will the dominoe effect be on the rest of FA and the draft?
Not to be overly simplistic, but WR would become a much higher priority. They did take Rueben Randle in the second round last year, and they do view him as a guy who can eventually be a starter. So maybe they'd look to him. But if your scenario unfolded (and I still don't think it will), they'd have to get someone, I believe.
Dan, we know Jerry Reese always has his priorities in order. In that regard, who is ranked highest to lowest on that list right now: Kevin Boothe, Martellus Bennett, Victor Cruz?
My guess would be Cruz, Boothe, Bennett.
If Harvin is work a #1 plus other picks, why won't teams spend a #1 on Cruz? Given that the RFA market has been non-existent in recent years, is not siging RFAs another unwritten NFL rule?
I think it is. I also think Harvin is a much better player than Cruz. (No offense to Cruz, but I think Harvin is special on another level.) Not sure it's an apples-to-apples comparison.
Bennett back to Gmen? According to him yes: Martellus Bennett a?ý@DaBlackUnicornSigning the contract today!!! Back to BIG BLUE!
That's not his real Twitter name.
If Romo continues his stellar performance from last year, what do the Cowboys need most to push them over the edge to make a run in the playoffs?
Well, they would need him to play as well in the last game as he did in the nine that preceded it.
NFC East. I'm a Detroit Lions fan, partial to my own division. In 2013, I think NFC East will be the toughest division. Am I wrong?
We do like to say yes around here, but the NFC West looks like the early leader for that title.
Nobody answering this...hopeful you end the cycle Dan!Broncos send Dumervil and their 3rd to the Jets for Revis and a conditional pick in 2013...who says no?
Not my division, but I don't want the whole chat to stand you up. I'd say that'd be a pretty sweet haul for the Jets to get for an injured player everyone knows they're trying to trade.
Dan, why were the Giants able to sign Cullen Jenkins before FA officially started?
Jenkins was cut by the Eagles before the end of his contract. Players in that situation can sign with anyone whenever they like. The 4 pm ET kickoff today is for players whose contracts expired at the end of the 2012 season. Jenkins was cut with years still left.
Let's say eagles plan to draft dion jordan. Does this make trent cole expendable, and do you see them trading him for a second rounder?
It's a good question. I do think Cole is still a very good player who just had a down year, and I imagine he's got a role in their defense. I think it'd be tough to get a second-rounder for him after a down year, and I think they're best to hold onto him, even if they draft a pass rusher. What's that Giants' saying about how you can't have too many of those?
do you see the Redskins reworking Santana moss's contract or cutting him before free agency begins or soon after?
There are reports out there that Moss has agreed to a pay cut today that will save the Redskins $2 million.
If Ahmad Bradshaw doesn't resign w/ NY would Michael Turner on a veteran minimum deal make sense for the Giants?
Yeah, I think that'd be a great pickup/deal for the Giants -- a guy you know can carry the load if it turns out Wilson can't. And a guy who knows pass protection.
A lot of Eagles fans have been saying that the Geno Smith workout was a smokescreen to get someone else to move AHEAD of the eagles to take him. For which player (planned to go in the top 3)would the eagles go through that effort for?
One of the tackles, maybe. Joeckel or Fisher.
**Reworded** Who do you think will pick up Fred Davis?
I think there's still a decent chance he goes back to Washington.
Better chance the Eagles release or trade Asomugha?
Do the Eagles take a QB this draft or wait til what is supposed to be a qb heavy year next year?
The QB moves they have made to date indicate that they plan to wait.
Likelihood that Bruce Allen and Mike work money magic and grab Kenny Philips today?
I think it'd be a great move, but I expect the safety market will move slowly after the first-tier guys.
Why dont the Giants cut Deihl? It would save something like 8M in cap space and he isnt starting caliber anymore.
My belief is that they want to have a replacement on the roster first. They're not exactly deep on the line. Right now, he's either their starting RT or their starting LG.
If Bennett doesn't come back to the GMEN they could draft a TE. Any chance they get a FA TE instead? Which one?
There's lots of them. Fasano has been mentioned. They will have their pick, which is one reason they haven't gone overboard to re-sign Bennett.
At what time do you predict the first NFC East signing will happen? 4:01?
Yes, I think we will have some news right away.
HELPPPPPP!!! if rams offer cruz a contract the gmen choose not to match would big blue get the 16th or 22nd overall pick?
I don't want to keep ignoring this question, but I don't know the answer and can't find it in the CBA.
Is this the last year the Redskins and Cowboys are punished for going over the non=existent salary cap?
Who's the starting RB for the NY Giants, this year?
I think they'll give Wilson first crack at it, but Andre Brown's a possibility, and there's a chance the starter is someone not yet on the roster.
They get the Rams original draft pick, not the one from the Redskins. You can't sign an offer sheet unless you have your own draft pick to give up
Which NFC East team is first out of the game today with a FA signing and who is their target???? In your educated opinion of course!
My guess is the Eagles, with a safety. But I wouldn't be surprised if the Redskins started out fast with a defensive back either.
Is Billy Davis going to push for the Eagles to sign James Harrison? It seems like he'd be a big help for the team if they switch to a 3-4
I think the Eagles want to get younger.
Any news on if the 'boys have anything working to get further under the cap? I cant believe they didnt have a better plan than to get only 175k below.
Well, the $5 million in penalties obviously hurt. The best ways for them to make more space are contract extensions for Romo and Spencer and cutting guys like Spears and Vickers.
Do the Eagles need to wait until 4pm to cut Asomougha?
I think I saw that somewhere, yes, to get the full $11 million savings.
Any chance Redskins make a surpirse move and sign a free-agent WR?
That would surprise me, especially since it appears they're not cutting Moss.
The Cowboys are a perplexing bunch.
I agree with this.
You mentioned in your article today that Doug free is a June 1 cut .. as the savings won't be available until then even if he is cut today. I think by cutting Hall, the redskins realized the salary cap savings immediately. Is there something in the contract that designates whether a player is a June 1 cut or not?
How much say do each of the coaches in the NFC East have in picking up free agents? Does Chip Kelly get as much input as, say, Shannahan?
Good question, and while we don't know how the power structure is exactly going to work in Philly now, the answer is no. Shanahan has complete control over personnel decisions in Washington. GM Jerry Reese has that control in NY, not coach Tom Coughlin. Obviously, owner/GM Jerry Jones has that control in Dallas, but I think Jason Garrett's input is valued more than was that of most of his predecessors. I would think Howie Roseman is the guy calling the shots in Philly now, but it remains to be seen how much control Kelly has.
Dan, any rush to get the Nicks deal done? There was talk about him being more important, but we are seeing other names (Cruz, Boothe) pop up too.
There's no rush, because he's signed through 2013. I think that talk had something to do with at least trying to scare Cruz.
Any reason to think revis to eagles is possible?
I think they should get him, honestly. And it's undoubtedly possible. They have the picks to trade and the money to sign him.
I think Jared cook fits the bill as a player you over spend for. Young and has his best football ahead of him. We have so much cap space I say we go for it. Thoughts?
Well, I don't know which team you root for, but it does seem as though Cook is going to cash in somewhere. He'd help the Eagles, for sure, if that's who you meant.
Foles + 3rd = Revis??
That's effectively two thirds. Maybe a little more, if you figure Foles is a third who has NFL game experience. I think that'd be a good deal for the Jets. I don't think the Eagles want to trade Foles.
Dan, would you be worried about Revis coming off the injury?
Of course, but my feeling is that it's a chance to acquire a premium player for relatively low trade cost, and you can afford to sign him.
why didn't any team in the nfc east trade for boldin for 6th?
Great as he was in the playoffs, do you think Boldin has that much left? And the NFC East teams are pretty set at WR anyway.
I think Charles Woodson signing for the NYG would be genius...we love to play the 3 safety look and he still has a lot left in the tank...any possiblity of that happening
Hello Dan and everyone else in the chat. I'm the AFC North blogger who is about to take the handoff in this chat marathon.
Interesting, for sure. He'd be like Deon Grant was a couple of years ago, only a Hall of Famer.
I'm out! Enjoy Jamison Hensley! Tip your waitresses!
Whats the biggest free agent the browns could land?
I would have bet on Cliff Avril, but it sounds like the Browns are eyeing Paul Kruger as their targeted pass rusher. I don't see Browns going after a wide receiver in FA.
Jamison -- As a Browns fan, who should I be rooting for more with the 3-4 scheme (Avril vs. Kruger)?
I would choose Avril because he has a better chance of being an impact player on every down. Kruger doesn't hold up well against the run.
Is this Ravens interest in Jennings or Amendola real?? or an exciting rumor?
Purely rumor at this point. The Ravens have to do something to fill the void. Jacoby Jones isn't a starting WR. It's risky to try to make Dennis Pitta a WR. And you can't count on finding a starting WR in the draft.
The Steelers never make a big splash in free agency, but I'd be satisfied if we could retain Keenan Lewis. Do you have any idea if that's a possibility?
What helps the Steelers is that there's a lot of CBs in free agency. That will drive the price down on Lewis. What hurts them is Ray Horton is the DC of the Browns, who have a lot of cap room and a need for a No. 2 cornerback. I'd say the odds are against the Steelers keeping Lewis.
Will the Bengals re-sign Andre Smith or draft another tackle?
I don't see Bengals paying Smith $9 million per season, if that is truly his asking price. The Bengals could grab a quality right tackle with their first pick in the draft.
Bengals. Who's their starting QB in 2013?
Dalton. No question. The starter in 2014? That's a topic to address after the season.
Do you think the steelers will go after a running back?
In the draft. Starting in the second round or third round.
Any truth to the rumor that the Browns are close to getting James Harrison too? Would they go after him if they land Kruger?
That would show no confidence in Jabaal Sheard if they signed both.
What are the odds of the Steelers actually signing Dan Conner after his visit to Pittsburgh. Does he replace Foote or does Foote and Connor play inside and Timmons moved outside. Last time they tried that it didn't work out very well.
My take is Connor would replace Foote at ILB. Steelers should draft a young pass rusher who can play OLB. Jarvis Jones could be there.
Who is starting rb for Steelers this season?
Tell me what running back is getting drafted by the Steelers. That's a major part of the equation.
Ravens and Dannell Ellerbe. Think he's staying?
It would make sense on why the Ravens are trying to open up cap room. But the Browns have so much more cap space. If they really want him, they should be able to get him.
Outside of the Kruger rumor, what free agent do you think the Browns are most likely to sign? Any shot at one of Jared Cook or Keenan Lewis?
I believe Lewis is a more realistic addition than Cook. But it wouldn't surprise me if the Browns could get both. Cook would be a major upgrade at tight end.
What are the priorities for the Browns after pass rushers?
TE, Backup QB, FS, G.
Thoughts on the Steelers cutting soon to be 33 yr old Ike Taylor and re-signing K. Lewis. Would be a bold move, but cannot let all this talent leave for future comp picks.
Steelers seem set to go with Taylor and Ike Taylor as starters and William Gay as the nickel back. Don't shoot the messenger.
What free agents do you predict Ravens signing?
Chris Canty is reportedly visiting the Ravens today.
For the Browns, isnt a CB in FA almost a requirement
Sorry, my bad. Yes, CB is a high priority in free agency. They should get either Keenan Lewis or Antoine Cason.
Jamison its 1 am in Hong Kong I have work in the morning can you please answer this so i can go to bed happy... Is there anyway the bengals draft a de or dt in the 1st or 2nd round even though they are loaded on the d-line?
I don't see that. It's more likely the Bengals will draft a safety, offensive tackle or outside linebacker in the first round. Now go to bed.
Bigger priority for the Bengals: getting Smith back or extending soon to be FA guys like Atkins?
Extending Geno Atkins and A.J. Green is the way to go. Bengals can replace Andre Smith. They can't fill the void left by Atkins and Green if they go in the near future.
Will the bengals look to add a RB through either free agency or the draft?
Probably the draft. The Bengals signed BenJarvus Green-Ellis as a stopgap. They need to get younger at that position. They need a speedy playmaker. That being said, the Bengals could get a running back in the draft and free agency. Don't rule that out.
More Browns. Backup QB? I thought they had Colt McCoy.
Colt McCoy won't be the backup much longer.
Who do you think will start at WR opposite Torrey Smith for Baltimore? Jones? Streeter? Doss?
Can I choose none of the above. If any of those guys start, Flacco and the Ravens are in trouble. I would prefer to move Pitta to WR and put Dickson out there at TE.
Which running back do you think the steelers will take in the draft?
I really like Marcus Lattimore out of South Carolina. He should be there in the third round. Yes, there are injury concerns. But he is the most talented back in the draft.
Top 3 likeliest destinations for Ed Reed...
Patriots, Colts and 49ers.
Steelers couldnt make the playoffs with all of the rebuild could they?
Sure, it doesn't look promising. But never count out the Steelers when they have a healthy Ben Roethlisberger. Again, the key is a healthy Big Ben.
Who do you think will replace Ed Reed if he leaves? Will they draft a Safety or sign a free agent?
Ravens need to get younger on defense. I think Matt Elam out of Florida makes a lot of sense for Ravens.
Any chance the Bengals go after Jennings or Wallace?
Don't see it. If Bengals add another WR, it will be in the draft. They got burned in FA with TO and Antonio Bryant.
Biggest move that the Bengals could make in FA?
Safety Dashon Goldson. Would be very good move.
Are you saying Elam to the Ravens because Vaccaro will be long gone?
Yes. That would be my assumption.
Battle of Ohio: Will the Browns or Bengals make the bigger splash in FA?
Browns. New regime needs to make statement.
Jamison when are you leaving?
Funny, you mention that. My time is up. Thanks for all of the great questions. I will talk to you next week for our weekly chat. Enjoy free agency.
With all that cap room in Cleveland, which potential FA do you project they would overpay and by how much?
Yeah, there will be some of that-no doubt. I see their needs as 1. OLB for their new 3-4 and then CB. Of course they could use a OG, another pass catcher, maybe a QB and a Safety, but it seems as though they are hot after Avril or Kruger-but where they sit in the draft, they should have the choice of an excellent OLB prospect. I would pencil in that first rounder at OLB, but it doesn't sound like that is the direction they will go. CB would be my top priority in free agency
Aside from Wallace does Miami sign another big FA?
Yeah, I think so. They have a ton of money and now have a gaping hole at OT as well. Martin was just so so at RT last year-are they comfortable with him switching sides? If so, Winston or Vollmer would make a ton of sense. Also, they do have an extra 2nd rounder from their V Davis trade and reinforcing that secondary, esp at CB has to be a big priority.
Hey Matt if you were in charge of Denver, what FA's would you be targeting?
Welker. Would love to see that! But DT is their top need. A young MLB would be huge too. How about a DT like G Dorsey perhaps?
What do you think the chances of Andy Levitre becoming a Brown are?
OG is certainly a need and it could happen-or Vasquez or Moore could be a free agent OG target for Clev. Moore is the oldest, prob the cheapest, but the best and most established run blocker of the three. Levrite is prob the most talented and is the best in protection, while Vasquez is pretty much right in the middle of these categories and very reliable.
Hey Matt, if you were picking #1 in the 2012 Draft who would you take #1 & why . . . Luck? RGIII? Wilson?
Luck. If I were starting a team right now, the only player I would take over Luck is A Rodgers. I LOVE RG3, Wilson, etc, but Luck had much more on his plate as a rookie than those guys and never made me doubt that he really is all he was cracked up to be coming out of Stanford.
Thoughts on any other free agents San Francisco will be after?
Maybe a CB like S Smith. I think they get their Safety in the draft-a guy like Elam perhaps. What is most interesting to me about SF is they just have SO many draft picks-and not much roster room to fit them all in. In a draft where most teams seem likely to want to trade down, SF can do the opposite.
Should we trade MJD?
Yes. He still has value and, I hope this isn't a shock: JAX isn't winning the Super Bowl this year! Need all the draft picks they can get.
Any chance the Skins can somehow manage to pay Glover Quin?
He would be a great fit in what is now just an awful secondary. Can they make that fit? I don't know, but I would think WASH cannot be aggressive with signings until the first wave of free agency is over. Will Quin still be out there at that point?
What do you think about the Browns signing Connor Barwin?
Again, I would much rather see them use their first round pick on a guy like Jordan, Mingo, Ansah, Jones, etc...great value at that point of the draft and several 3-4 OLBs with tons of upside to pick from. The Brownie fans are representing today!
What are your thoughts on the Vikings signing Victor Cruz?
That seems very possible to me-and I would endorse it. I rarely think signing RFAs is a good move, but in this case, it sure would improve them. Could still use that other 2nd rounder on a WR like Hopkins or Allen or Hunter possibly. If they can keep or adaquately replace Loadholt, the O around Ponder would be complete
WHy Is Jordan (who only had 40 tackles and 5 sacks) higher rated the Jones? Is it strickly the neck? Shouldn't production out weighsheer athleticism?
In some eyes, Jones will be higher rated and it appears as though his neck has checked out...although that might be a team to team opinion on that matter. But Jordan has RARE abilities. Remember Julian Peterson and all the different things he could amazingly do on D? Jordan is very much like that, but with more natural ability.
Jared Cook and an OT to the Bears?
Check out the radio hit I did last night in Chicago-we talk about this quite a bit. They asked me about J Long, but I told them I would rather sign a OG and TE for close to the same money it would prob cost to land Long. TONS of TEs to pick from, including Casey and Walker-my two sleeper/value guys. Also, VERY deep TE draft...so I wouldn't be too hasty on a guy like Cook. TE is a Buyers Market.
Does Lane Johnson end up a top ten pick? OTs are flying up the board.
Tend to think he will...can't see Joekel and Fisher getting out of the top 4ish...
Pouha to the Broncos? I know they need a DT.
At the right price? Sure. They got outstanding production last year from Vickerson and Bannan, both of whom were signed on the cheap and are free agents to be. Pouha could fit that same mold to free up the LBs behind him.
There are rumors the Ed Reed could end up in SF. Do you think that would make more sense than drafting a safety in the first round?
Certainly a Win Now move, as was the Boldin trade. Doesn't mean they still couldn't use a reasonably high pick on a Safety with upside-deep Safety draft too. And you could play more Big Nickel in the meantime. Also, eliminates a need and could make SF real players on DDay to package those two early picks and really move up in round one-maybe for DL
Do you think the Chiefs will be able to trade down out of the #1 pick?
No. And I think the pick will be Joekel
Matt, are the Pats making any FA noise? Other than (hopefully) resigning Welker, Talib, & Vollmer?
I would assume that is their priority. They do have a ton to spend though. I wonder how active they were in Harvin talks. A WR makes sense for sure, but this isn't a great group of UFA WRs. How about an interior pass rusher like R Seymour or D Bryant?
What are the chances Tampa goes after a Welker or another weapon for Freeman. I'm still not sold on Mike Williams? or do you go for a CB?
I would dedicate most of my resources to improving that Pass D. Bring back Bennett. Sign a CB. Go from there. Revis? Maybe add yet another pass rusher and DB.
What does Oakland do with the 3rd pick?
I think that is the hardest one to guess...cause they need EVERYthing. Star? Floyd? Their DTs are a mess. Milliner? Their CBs are a mess. Fisher? RT is a mess. DE? Their pass rush is a mess.
Do you think that Jake Long can command $10 or $11 million per year on the open market or do you think he could come back to Miami at around $8 or $9 million per year?
Not dodging the question, but I think Long all comes down to team doctors. He really scares me though, esp since MIA (who knows him best) didn't decide he was worth Franchising.
If the browns sign Kruger or Avril, do you think they trade down in the draft?
They could keep their fingers crossed for Milliner...or Geno Smith. Warmack?
What will the Packers do for a Center this year? Could the position be settled in free agency?
It could be a real problem. No one leaps to mind as a great fit and upgrade at OC from this UFA class and there isn't a fantastic OC in the draft. Maybe Jones from Bama at the end of Round 1?
Do you think the Falcons should go after Jackson, Reed?
Ed Reed? No, not after just signing Moore. CB is a huge need area now though-as is DE. As is RB, but I am not one to overspend at that position. They should be able to land S Jax or Mendy or even trade for MJD perhaps, but wouldn't give up the world for those guys.
Any chance Chris Canty doesn't leave Baltimore today and we add to the lack of dline depth?
I like that fit. Canty played well for NYG, but I like him even better as a 3-4 DE, which is to say that he has a lot of versatility, which is something BALT craves in their system. He also is a very good interior pass rusher. But does BALT have the $?
Should the cowboys go after goldson?
I think Goldson is a little overrated and again, this is a deep Safety draft, but wow are Dallas' safeties bad. They will be playing a lot more Cover 2, which won't put as much stress on the position, but still...
Who are the teams looking at John Abraham?
He visited SEA and SF...I love the fit in SEA. Again, win now move. But he could fill in for Clemons, help mentor Irvin and prob would not have to play a TON of snaps to keep him fresh for late in the year and extend his career. Okay Folks I am out. James Walker will be taking over. Drop me a note on Twitter @WilliamsonNFL...big day ahead!
Let's talk some AFC East. I'm taking over for Matt Williamson for the next 30 minutes. Let's discuss.
Phins really going to take a shot at the Titans TE? Chances of getting him are____?
Miami is in the mix for Cook, but I don't believe the Dolphins are the favorites. Miami has put a lot of resources into securing Mike Wallace, and the Dolphins are the favorite there. But Miami can't be the favorite to land everyone. If the Dolphins get Wallace, it will be a good day for them.
What teams are the Dolphins' main competition in signing Mike Wallace?
Keep an eye on Minnesota. I doubt the Vikings traded Percy Harvin the day before free agency without having a replacement in mind. Minnesota is certainly in play for Mike Wallace or Greg Jennings. It could come down to fit and price. There's always a mystery team that people don't expect, as well. So I wouldn't get too comfortable in Miami until pen hits the paper today.
Where do Fins draw the line Salarywise 12M a year?
A lot of Mike Wallace questions today. It depends on the market. Miami appears to be willing to outbid teams for Wallace, so I expect the annual average to be at least what Dwayne Bowe received in KC. It could go a little higher if Minnesota or another team gets in the mix.
Think Maualuga is a good fit for the Bills? They need help stopping the run.
Buffalo needs linebackers but I'm not a big Rey Maualuga guy. He's pretty solid against the run but is awful in pass coverage. Teams like New England and Miami will spread the Bills out and force Maualuga to cover or leave the game on passing downs. Buffalo needs a three-down LB in the middle.
Do you see any QBs in free agency landing with the Bills?
I don't see it, Kyle. Buffalo already re-signed Tarvaris Jackson in free agency and still have Ryan Fitzpatrick on the roster (as of today). If Fitzpatrick is cut, maybe. But the Bills are looking to draft a QB.
Any guys out there that could fill the role of Woodhead if he doesn't re-sign with the Pats. The Pats don't have a reliable blocking RB to protect Brady on passing downs.
The Patriots are not too concerned with their RBs, Bryan. Woodhead is a nice and versatile player. However, Ridley and Vereen are entering their third year and are more than capable of carrying the load if Woodhead doesn't return. New England must address other areas first like CB, S and WR.
Do you think there will be a frenzy today or do you think that players will wait to sign?
I expect some of the top guys to sign by the end of today (midnight). The three-day negotiating window has set the market for players. But it will be busy for the rest of the week, probably into Friday or Saturday.
WHAT ARE THE JETS LOOKING TO DO?
Not much, Pun. The Jets are slashing salaries right now, not adding them. They just cut Sione Po'uha, who is their best DT. New York doesn't have the cap room to be major players in free agency. The team could search for bargain-basement options, but that's about it. The Jets will use the draft to improve their team the most.
Which of the following are the dolphins likely to keep, if any: Jake Long, Sean Smith, or Reggie Bush
That's a tough one, Sleepyhead. I would say Sean Smith of the three. But I would put his chances to return at moderate. I don't expect Bush and Long to return unless they get zero interest and are willing to return on a team-friendly contract.
As a life long Bills fan, do we show any signs of promise for a brighter future? How are we going to fix our QB situation?
It's a tough year to fix the QB situation, Ian. That is probably Buffalo's biggest problem. Ryan Fitzpatrick is not the answer. You can't win with him because he is so erratic. An erratic QB makes the team erratic. But the draft this year also has quesitonable quarterbacks.
Bills still working on Levitre or they decide to let him walk. I like him as a player, but guards are one of the easier positions to replace, no?
Hey, Xander. The Bills are still in the mix but there are several other teams now in play. The Bills could lose Levitre, who is getting pretty good interest. He's a good player.
Will Bilal Powell be the Jets starting RB in 2013?
If that's the case, Jets GM John Idzik didn't do a good job adding competition at RB. Powell is a decent backup but not a starter.
Will the Jets look for a QB in free agency or the draft? Because it seems like they have 5 backup quarterbacks on their roster now.
The Jets are done with free-agent quarterbacks. They made their choice with David Garrard. He's a cheap alternative and probably the best the Jets could do considering their circumstances. It will be Mark Sanchez vs. David Garrard in training camp and probably a rookie added to the mix via the draft.
Will Ross and Ireland swing and miss again or do you feel this is the year they will finally make a significant signing?
This is a huge year for Jeff Ireland. He has all the resources and draft picks to field a good team. If that doesn't happen, it's on him. Mike Wallace is the focal point for Miami. If the Dolphins get Wallace, that sets the tone for a successful offseason. If the Dolphins whiff and can't get a No. 1 WR, it could go downhill.
do you see miami picking up a veteran in the secondary? EX: Woodson, or Reed
I don't see Miami landing a big-time safety. Rashad Jones is there, so it's not a huge need. The Dolphins just need another safety who is solid. Miami's money must be spend on offense at WR, TE and OT.
Everyone, thanks for the fun chat. It's time to talk NFC North with Kevin Seifert.
Can you tell me why polian has delmas rated higher than dashon golston?
Would have to ask him, but Delmas is a big-time player when he's healthy. The problem is that he hasn't been for a while.
What is the latest on Brian Urlacher, and will the Bears sign an OT during Free Agency?
The latest we heard is that Urlacher had submitted some numbers to the Bears. It's clear there is some interest in bringing him back, but I doubt the Bears want to pay him a lot of money. He's two hours away from free agency.
Do you see the Packers ending up with any top free agents?
Not likely, but I guess it would depend on your definition of "top." They obviously have some interest in Chris Canty, having hosted him on a visit. Otherwise, they're probably saving their cap space for Aaron Rodgers and Clay Matthews.
How do you see the vikings addressing the need of WR, or any other areas of need.
At WR, I think the Vikings are going to be in collection mode for a while. They re-signed Jerome Simpson today and I imagine they'll keep bringing people in all offseason. It's rare when an entire position group has to be rebuilt in one offseason.
Which lineman are the Bears most likely to get?
They are apparently interested in Phil Loadholt, the Vikings right tackle. He would be cheaper than Jake Long, but I've heard they have legitimate interest in Long as well. We'll see in a few hours.
Why did the Vikings sign J. Simpson now? After last year's performance, it is hard to believe that there would be that much of a market for him. The timing just seems curious. Why not wait to see if you can get a second-tier WR in FA before committing additional money to him?
I'm guessing they committed little to no up-front money.
What chance do the Detroit Lions have on signing Reggie Bush, Glover Quin or Goldson?
I think a pretty good chance of Bush. Goldson would be expensive and seems unlikely. Quin, I'm not sure.
Manti Te'o and Tyler Eifert are there for the taking in the draft, which one does the Bears snatch up?
Between the two, I would say Eifert. There is a big need at both positions, but I'm going to guess the Bears wouldn't take Te'o in the first round.
Kevin, do you see the Lions getting anything done with Matt Stafford, or Ndamakong Suh, to provide cap relief? As I see it, or IMO, the Lions need to make a couple bigger signings this year, to not repeat a poor 4-12 season.
It doesn't seem like a deal with Stafford is imminent, although stranger things have happened. The Suh restructure is a possibility, but it would only make things worse in the future.
Bears need a TE badly, but haven't even dropped Kellen Davis yet. What's their plan?
I'll be interested to see if the pursue Jared Cook. That's the difference-maker out there.
Vikings and Victor Cruz.....plausable?
Maybe after the first wave of free agency. Teams rarely see value in a market-level contract offer PLUS a first-round pick. That's a lot to give up, in terms of the draft pick and cap space, for one player.I doubt it's the Vikings' first choice.
Is Avril really a top tier end of a result of the double teams Suh and Fairley demand?
Sack totals speak volumes in contract negotiations. He has 29 in three years.
Can the Bears afford both Cook and Long?
Teams can afford whatever they prioritize. The Bears could sign both if they're willing either to cut players to make room or restructure them in a way that will cause problems down the line. Always a way right now.
Did I leave any bridges unburned?
There are a lot of people in Minnesota who know how special of a player you are.
Are the Lions going to target any free agent CB's this year, like Aquib Talib?
I'm guessing they're trying to re-sign Chris Houston first.
With Avril leaving is there anyone out there the Lions can pick up to fill the void in FA or do they hold out for the draft?
They have some relatively affordable options in Willie Young and Lawrence Jackson if they want to re-sign one or both of them.
Do you see the Vikings making a strong move on Wallace or Jennings?
If I had to guess, I would say Jennings is more likely than Wallace. Sounds like the Dolphins aren't going to be denied on Wallace and the Vikings will have a limit on what they are willing to spend.
J Finley and the Bears?
He would have to be cut first. The Packers really don't have to deal with him until March 27 when his roster bonus is due.
Is Ted Thompson wasting away valuable years from AROD?
Yes. That Super Bowl victory was a waste of everyone's time.
How likely is it the Vikings sign Vince Young as Ponder's backup?
There is the connection between the Vikings' QB coach, Craig Johnson, and Young, from when they worked in Tennessee together. But I wouldn't guess that Young is the Vikings' first choice.
Are the Packers planning on going with Dietrich-Smith at center or do they find another veteran to do the job?
I think it'll be Evan. I'm guessing they gave him a low tender because they didn't think he would generate a lot of action as an RFA. They're probably right.
what do you think about Finley?
Too good of a player, and threat to defenses, to just cut. And I think McCarthy wants him back, so that should carry some weight.
Who is a more realistic signing for the lions: Bush or Goldson? They need immediate secondary help but could also use the homerun threat in the backfield.
Bush. Much more realistic.
Given that the Packers have 18 mil of cap room according to Silverstein, why is it being suggested they may cut Finley? It's not like they're going to sign any FAs that cost more than the vet mininum.
Because at the moment Finley is set to count $8.5 million or so against the salary cap. That's a lot for a tight end. But it's workable.
As a reminder, we'll go until 2:30 p.m. ET before we move onto Mike Sando of NFC West fame.
Have you heard any news about restructuring K. Williams or J. Allens contracts?
Neither had happened as of last night.
Harvin is worth what ever somebody will pay him.....what do you think he is worth, contract wise?
He's one of the top 5 receivers in the game. So I'd put him there. Does that mean $10 million a year? $11 million? $12 million? Those are details. The range is top-5.
Whats the more likely scenario. Green Bay signing Steven Jackson.... or drafting Eddie Lacy with their first pick?
Can I say neither? Would be such a departure for Ted Thompson.
Do you think Phil Emery is good at poker?
From what I can tell, he is excellent at it.
If Detroit gets Bush will they have any money left for receiver or the defensive side of the ball?
Not if they don't do some other restructuring/re-working first.
Do you really think Lacy makes it to the end of the first round?
Only the rarest running backs get taken early in the first round.
Any ideas on why they have not resigned Loadholt?
Guessing he wants more money than they will offer.
better for the bears loadholt or long?
All things equal, a LT is more important than a right tackle.
OK everyone, I'm going to make way for Mike Sando here. It sounds as though the Vikings just released CB Antoine Winfield, giving me something to do.
Is Percy Harvin really a top 5 receiver?
Percy Harvin defies classification. He is a unique talent in the NFL. He is part receiver, part returner, part running back.
Doesn't acquiring Harvin limit the Seahawks flexibility in the future? He wants crazy money, has never had 1,000 yards or more than 6 TDs receiving, and isn't an outside guy. They're a great team, but they are going to have to pay some of those guys to stay great and I don't think the risk is quite worth it with Harvin.
The Seahawks feel as though Percy Harvin can be a lot more than he was in Minnesota partly because they have the quarterback to maximize him. They think he can be an outside guy or an inside guy, and that his presence will make life much easier for Sidney Rice and Golden Tate. Harvin became almost exclusively a short-route receiver last season. I think that said more about Christian Ponder than it said about Percy Harvin.
Mike, how do you think the Rams will try to improve their already weak offense now that SJax and Danny Amendola are gone? Are they gonna just focus thru the draft or possibly make a splash with a top FA signing?
The Rams have to help themselves in free agency and the draft. Do not think it'll be just a draft thing. Their belief philosophically is in using free agency to target impact players, not middle-class players. They feel as though that is the trend in the NFL. That tells me they'll look to strike for a higher-priced player somewhere along the line in free agency. The problem, of course, is the free-agent pool itself. Not all that enticing.
How much of a priority is CB for the 49ers?
I think it's a back-burner priority for the 49ers. If they can find an upgrade at a reasonable price, sure, add to the pile. But they need to restore their pass-rush to full strength. That will help their secondary a great deal.
Alex Smith trade should be finalized this afternoon. Any chance that we hear the Niners got something different than a 2013 2nd rounder and a 2014 2nd/3rd conditional pick?
I'd say an outside chance. Everything I heard suggested those were the terms. But until it's official and on file, there's always a chance it'll be a little different.
Who is your favorite to win the NFC West now that Seattle seems to be improving?
Yeah, Seattle was gaining last season and finished only one-half game behind the 49ers. The team that handles its defensive line situation the best is probably the one I'm going to pick. Need to see how Seattle adjusts for Chris Clemons' injury and how San Francisco responds to what I think are some depth issues or at least rotational issues on its defensive line.
What are the chances that the Rams, or Cardinals win the division next year?
There is no way I can pick the Cardinals based on their quarterback situation. The Rams have an outside chance but I think they are a year away and would need Seattle or San Francisco to stumble.
Will the Niners plan to use all their draft picks this year since it seems to be considered a lackluster draft class or do you think they will make a play for another FA or try to package picks and trade up for one key player?
I could see the 49ers trying to leverage 2013 picks into a 2014 first-round selection. That could make sense for the 49ers as they try to maximize the present while planning for the future.
Will the acquisition of Harvin push Washington out of the main returner role? Or will Harvin be solely utilized offensively, leaving Washington as the go to guy on special teams?
Leon Washington is set to earn close to $3 million and it's fair to wonder if he's going to be back. I don't think the Seahawks will make Harvin a full-time returner, but if they are really good on defense again, they won't have all that many chances for kickoff returns. For example, last season the Seahawks had 29 kickoff returns. Only Denver (28) and Atlanta (27) had fewer. The league average was 44 per team. Put another way, Seattle allowed 23 touchdowns last season, fewest in the NFL. The average was 36 allowed. So I think we could see the team going with Harvin and a cheaper alternative to Washington in the KOR role.
What will the Rams do about their WR problems?
Play the young guys, for starters. Chris Givens looks like a very promising prospect. He was a big-play threat last season. Brian Quick needs to play more. Austin Pettis needs to play more. The Rams need to sign a veteran, probably, and they could stand to draft a receiver, preferably one with good ability in the return game. Tavon Austin's name has come up.
Do you think play of Russell Wilson has altered the offensive philosophy in Seattle? Is the team now moving from run based clock eating to high powered out score the opponent? Or just a better balanced offense?
Pete Carroll and Tom Cable will keep the running game a point of emphasis. The defense also allows the Seahawks to play a slower game. However, I do think we saw the team open up its playbook late last season. Seattle led the NFL in scoring by a wide margin from Week 13 forward. I think we'll see the Seahawks pass on a higher percentage of plays than they did last season.
If you had to guess today, which 2nd year WR will play a larger role for their team between Michael Floyd, Brian Quick or AJ Jenkins?
That is probably the order I would go with: Floyd, Quick, Jenkins.
I'm hearing a lot of teams are interested in Ricky Jean-Francois, but haven't heard much about Sopoaga. Have you heard any rumors about where Sop might land, or for how much?
I don't anticipate a big market for Isaac Sopoaga.
Who do you think the Buffalo Bills will grab?
Are the Rams wiling to tender Cruz? Is he worth a first rounder?
I don't think the Rams will go that route. I think they will be more apt to use their draft choices to acquire players at lower cost.
Do you think Seattle trades Flynn and what should they get for him?
I think Flynn will be traded this offseason or next offseason, but I don't think the price will be high. Would think a mid-round pick would be good value for Seattle. Otherwise, wait til next year.
How much cap space does Arizona have? Also what do you expect them to do with that money? draft?
The Cardinals have $9 million before taking on the Rashad Johnson contract. I think they'll clear more with Kevin Kolb's contract at some point soon.
Hey Mike, what free agents do you think the Rams will be pursuing?
I don't know which ones are going to visit St. Louis right away.
Who do you believe will be the best/most competitive division in the NFL this year?
The NFC West is the strongest division in my view. At least two playoff teams and don't forget about the Rams, who are tough and improving.
Will the Rams draft someone like Lacy?
Yeah, I could really see that happening. Think the Rams will be in the market for running backs while Jeff Fisher is the head coach.
Whats a good year for Boldin in San Francisco? I'm guessing he's going into be the 3rd most targeted recieving target. Is it possible for him to have 65 catches for 850-900 yards? and is that worth 6 million dollars?
A good year is winning playoff games. I don't look at the numbers and think he has to have 1,000 yards. As long as he makes important catches and puts up numbers like he has been putting up recently, it's all good. If I'm the 49ers, I just want to see Colin Kaepernick developing a rapport and being able to trust Boldin in tough situations. And I'm looking to see Boldin battle the aggressive corners in the division.
What will the cardinals priority coming into the free agency and into the draft?
Improving at quarterback, obviously. I think we could see them address both lines, running back, possibly tight end. They could use a linebacker.
Is there someplace to see the cap space for all the teams?
Most of the info that is available publicly is outdated or wrong. John Clayton is the king of having that information up to date and accurate.
What do you see as San Francisco's #1 priority heading into free agency? Goldson/safety?
I'm thinking more along the lines of longer-term options on the defensive line. Who succeeds Justin Smith? That is one question to answer.
Thanks all. My time is up.
That wraps up our NFL free agency chat! Thanks to everyone for stopping by!
