Chat with Pierre LeBrun

Pierre LeBrun
  (12:00 PM)

Yo, let's puck it up

Timothy Irvin (Sunny Southern California)

Bonjour Pierre! Love all of your work! You are a true ICEMAN!Here is my NHL off season fantasy...Corey Perry becomes a free agent and signs with...Get ready...The Los Angeles KINGS!!! Then, we would REALLY have a Freeway Rivalry! Talk about taking it to a new level! I can dream, eh Pierre!

Pierre LeBrun
  (12:01 PM)

Haha, not sure the Ducks would ever recover from that. If Perry doesn't re-sign with Anaheim, my bet is he goes East. He's an Eastern boy after all from London, OntarioToronto, Detroit, Philadelphia my top 3 bets for him

bob nj [via mobile]

hi pierre what coud the rangers get back in a trade for m gaborik the rangers are not going anywhere with him?

Pierre LeBrun
  (12:02 PM)

With another year on his deal at $7.5 million next season and the salary cap going down from $70.2 M to $64.3 M next fall, I honestly don't know how a team could take him on unless they unload as much cash back the other way to NYAs I wrote last night, Rangers have needs: they want top-four, right-handed d-man and also want a couple of bottom-six grit type forwards

Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)

Have you ever Played Hockey in the NHL? If so what Team were you on?

Pierre LeBrun
  (12:03 PM)

Oh my, I certainly did not. Never good enough. My claim to fame is playing on the third line of the 1990 All-Ontario Midget A champions, the Hearst Lumberkings :)

Ray Shero (Pittsburgh, PA)

Pierre, can you please give a grade for how the Neal, Kunitz, Dupuis (with Hossa as a throw-in), and Sutter trades have worked out during my tenure as Pens GM? Considering the current level of play of all those guys, is there a grade higher than A+?

Pierre LeBrun
  (12:04 PM)

Ray, I think you're doing alright :)

Jesse S. (Carmel, NY)

Pierre, now that the new realignment plan is signed, sealed, and delivered, what are your honest feelings about the new playoff format where only a maximum of five teams can make it from a particular division and the 2-3 matchup has to be within a division. Isn't the league just inviting controversy here where two 100-point teams from a strong division play each other in a 2-3 matchup while two 80 point teams from a weaker division play each other? How is that fair? The inter-division playoffs were a good idea in the old 21 team league where only one team per division missed out, but now it would be more equitable if they just seeded 1-8. Use the divisions for scheduling purposes and that's it.

Pierre LeBrun
  (12:06 PM)

Jesse, for years and years we had divisional playoffs in the 1980s an early 1990s and most of us loved it. The Norris Division was terrible for a long time, the Adams and Smythe division were rock solid so yes, some years a fourth-place team in the Norris (Detroit or Toronto) would get in with way fewer points than the last place team in the Smythe or Adams.C'est la vie !

Elick (Hartford)

Is it just me or does SportsCenter have something against the NHL. Do the programming directors/producers dislike a professional sport with so much passion that it is nearly impossible to see any highlights of the previous days games. 11 games last night in the NHL and not a single highlight or game review. If you are going to call yourself the worldwide leader in sports entertainment I believe it is prudent to cover all sports...

Pierre LeBrun
  (12:06 PM)

I don't get SportsCenter here in Toronto so I don't know what's on air on ESPN.I just know we cover the heck out of hockey on ESPN.com

Lester Petrick and James Norris (Heaven)

Pierre, from our perch up above we have noticed that the four divisions have yet to be formally "named" under the new realignment plan. Geographical names would make no sense, you can't have Columbus in the "Atlantic" or Tampa in the "Northeast." Isn't this scenario just BEGGING, i mean flat out SCREAMING, for a return to the old division names....Patrick, Adams, Norris, Smythe! Name us one true hockey fan that would not be in favor of this. And don't give me the old "divisions named after people are too hard for the league to market and the casual fan to understand." I mean its not that hard. It honors the tradition of the league and is unique to our sport. Make it happen!

Pierre LeBrun
  (12:07 PM)

I'm with you, I'd love to go back to Smythe, Adams, Norris and Patrick. But league officials told me yesterday they were leaning towards geographical names

Brian Burke (Parts Unknown)

Pierre, the Leafs look like a solid playoff team for the first time since Desert Storm and the special teams are vastly improved from "pathetically awful" under Wilson to "average to above average" under Carlysle. Was it really (not so secretly) my fault for screwing this thing up the past few years? Especially by hanging on to my buddy Ron Wilson too long and creating an intimidating environment that stifled younger players? But then again I did make the Phaneuf and JVR trades and those have worked out....

Pierre LeBrun
  (12:09 PM)

You certainly deserve some credit for many parts of this team, the JVR trade being the last you made and it was a definitely a winner. But I wonder if you would have traded Lombardi before the season and dumped Connolly in the minors in order to make room for younger players? Not saying you wouldn't have, just curious though

Sean (Co)

What are the Stars looking to do with the trade deadline coming up? Will they try and improve or will they be sellers?

Pierre LeBrun
  (12:10 PM)

Tough call for them because once again they're right on that bubble.I"m hearing that they're taking calls on guys like Roy and Morrow _ both UFAs after the season... doesn't mean they'll move them for sure but those are the rumblings

Ryan Getzlaf (Anaheim, CA)

Pierre, what is your honest opinion of my new contract? Considering I am now the fifth highest cap hit in the league after Ovi, Crosby, Malkin and E. Staal, most people think I was wildly overpaid, especially since Corey Perry deserves equal if not more than me. Did the Ducks feel overpaying by that much was absolutely necessary to keep me, or did they make a panic offer just to get the process over with which I gladly accepted? Bottom line, would I have got that much from another contending team if I had gone to free agency?

Pierre LeBrun
  (12:11 PM)

I wouldn't say widely overpaid but yes it was a bit more than I had anticipated. I had pegged you at $7.5But you're having a great year and look like the old Getzy so it's all good pal

Jay Feaster (Calgary, AB)

Pierre, do you think the Flames should be a prime candidate to apply the new Brian Burke rule (retaining salary and cap hits in a trade) just to move out some of our useful veterans with brutal contracts at the trade deadline. These guys would have been otherwise unmoveable under the old system. Forget Iginla, I am talking about guys like Cammalleri, Bouwmeester, Tanguay, etc. That is of course if we ever decide to do the right thing and BLOW IT UP...

Pierre LeBrun
  (12:11 PM)

ACtually I believe there's more than a few teams that would take Bouwmeester on, he's had a decent year and teams I've spoken have interest in him

Jon Bon Jovi (Sayreville, NJ)

Pierre my old friend, what do you think of our new record? Specifically the new single "Because We Can." Doesn't that one seem tailor made for the soundtrack of some new sick NHL commercials during the playoffs?

Pierre LeBrun
  (12:12 PM)

I haven't bought music since 1995. No clue about your new album

Brian (Flagstaff, AZ)

The Coyotes are a staggering 0-6-0 playing Thursday night games while being outscored 27-11. Have you ever seen another team play so ineptly on one particular day?

Pierre LeBrun
  (12:12 PM)

Yes the Leafs haven't been very good in April and May the last nine years.Oh man, that was cheap on my part, hahahaha

Mike (SJ)

I was ready to write off the Sharks for the season before I went to last night's game. Then I saw their savior. Brent Burns was absolutely dominant. He was far and away the best player on the ice. He may never play another game on D - he was the dominant power forward every GM dreams about having and every opponent dreads facing. If you missed it, make sure you watch him on Saturday night (of course, after my praise, he'll probably play awful and be -4).

Pierre LeBrun
  (12:13 PM)

I did indeed watch last night's game. Intriguing little project they have going on there with him. Wonder how Martin Havlat feels that he's been so disappointing they've converted a d-man into a forward to pick up his slack. Of course Burns also played some F in Minnesota in his younger days as well so it's not completely foreign to him.I believe the SHarks make the playoffs. I don't see them having too much staying power but I think they make it in

Matthew (Detroit)

With the possibility of Datsyuk leaving after next year should the Wings try and trade him or hope he stays? What could we get for him?

Pierre LeBrun
  (12:14 PM)

zero chance they trade him. zero

Tim (Boston)

Seems like most people feel that the Bruins haven't played their best hockey yet (I agree). Do you feel they need to make any changes at the deadline, and do you think they will?

Pierre LeBrun
  (12:16 PM)

The plan is certainly for Peter Chiarelli to be aggressive at the deadline. As I've reported weeks ago, he covets Alfredsson from Ottawa, likes Iginla at some level from Calgary, Morrow from Dallas could be a fit as well, and of course if Corey Perry is actually available, he would certainly inquire.I think he wants to get one profile forward for sure. We'll see if he can get it done.

Ryan (Missouri)

Any chance the blues go after Iginla? or anyone else for that matter?

Pierre LeBrun
  (12:16 PM)

Here's what Blues I'm told are searching for before APril 3:Top-four d-man with a left-handed shot who can play with either Shattenkik or Alex P.They also want a big 3/4 centerman with size and grit

tdiddy (winnipeg) [via mobile]

Go Jets Go! If my Jets keep playibg the way they have been and have a chance at the playoffs, do you see them moving Antropov, Hainsy et al. for draft pick when the trade deadline comes?

Pierre LeBrun
  (12:17 PM)

Awesome to see the Jets making this run. I'm not supposed to cheer for anyone but I have to admit that I'd love to see Winnipeg fans get some playoff hockey. Best crowd in the NHL.Their ''Let's Go Blue Jays" chant at the end of the win over Toronto on Tuesday night had me in stitches.I think the Jets will keep most of their guys if they're still in it

Andrew (Birdsboro, Pa)

If the Flyers lose tonight to the Devils, will Pal Holmgren start tradeing a few assests looking towards next season. or will there be other changes such as a coaching (a terrible idea in my opinion) or will Ed Snider decide it's time to move on from Paul holmgren.

Pierre LeBrun
  (12:18 PM)

All I can tell you is that when I check with my Flyers sources they believe patience will be preached here... but knowing Mr. Snider, who knows... he wants to win now

Jason (Costa Mesa)

What is going on with Jonathan Quick? Do you think it is lack of play by him or by the defense?

Pierre LeBrun
  (12:21 PM)

Lots of goalies hurt by the lockout. He's one of them

HAWKS#1 (MICHIGAN)

Do you see the hawks making any moves?

Pierre LeBrun
  (12:22 PM)

they're on the lookout for a veteran No. 3 center typeOr if they get a true No. 2 they can shift Bolland to No. 3either way

Jason (NO CAL)

DO you consider the Kings the top player for Iginla?

Pierre LeBrun
  (12:22 PM)

Really hard to tell because at this point, Iggy hasn't decided yet what he wants to do. But I'd say LA and Pitt would interest him for sure if he decided to move

Stuart (Brooklyn, NY)

Hey Pierre. Do you think the Bossy, Trottier and Gillies line was the best in Isles history? Now that was hockey!

Pierre LeBrun
  (12:24 PM)

No question !

Frank D (Thorndale, PA)

How can the Flyers upgrade their inconsitent, to put it mildly, D at the trade deadline or even before then?

Pierre LeBrun
  (12:24 PM)

I think the Flyers need the full off-season to get their work done

LePhil Kessel (GTA)

hi should I be cutting holes out of a paper bag yet I am a Leafs fan ?

Pierre LeBrun
  (12:25 PM)

Deep breaths, deep breathsThey'll be ok... they overachieved most of the season. Battling for 7th and 8th is a more accurate portrayal of their talent level

ANTHONY (NYC)

Lou pretty much stole Andrei Loktionov from the LA Kings for a 5th rd pick. What i cant understand is he was a top prospect as little as a yr ago. Why wasnt there more competition to trade for him?

Pierre LeBrun
  (12:25 PM)

Don't know the answer to that but I point one thing out to you: Lou and Deano go way way back...

Vinnie (Boston)

Pierre do you see the Bruins staying pat with their 3rd line center situation with Kelly out and letting Peverley slot in there? Also everyone keeps talking about wingers for the Bruins but that last D pairing of Mcquad and Ference has looked real bad at times specifically Ference. Have you heard of the Bruins sniffing around for a Dman? Thanks.

Pierre LeBrun
  (12:28 PM)

yes my understanding is that the B's also plan to shop around for a defenseman as well

Brian Palmer (Eugene, OR)

Have you had a chance to check out the latest designs for the Seattle NBA/NHL arena that were released over the past couple days? Bettman & Co. have to be looking at Seattle first for relocation, right?

Pierre LeBrun
  (12:29 PM)

yes I saw them this morning, looks impressive. No question Seattle is hot on NHL radar. But if league can find a buyer for Coyotes to keep them in Glendale, that's still the priority

Suburban Rhythm (Pittsburgh)

Norris favorite Kris Letang? Would the addition of sick flow as a part of the voting criteria push him over the top?

Pierre LeBrun
  (12:30 PM)

haha, yeah he'll almost certainly be among the three nominees

Andrew (Toronto)

If the Sabres are about to be blown up (is there a more disappointing team) where do you see as a potential home for Miller? It seems he would be a down-rent Luongo for teams looking for an upgrade in net. The fella has earned a change in scenery, that's for sure.

Pierre LeBrun
  (12:32 PM)

Who knows what the Sabres are going to do. SPoken with a few teams that said they phoned the Sabres and couldn't figure out what was going on ...

Jason (NY)

Do the Rangers make the playoffs? Have looked pretty lackluster as of late

Pierre LeBrun
  (12:33 PM)

yes

Marc (Malden, MA)

Would Anaheim turn down Perry for Lucic?

Pierre LeBrun
  (12:34 PM)

If Perry doesn't sign with Anaheim over next 2 weeks that means he's not signing with any team and going to market July 5. No team would give up a solid, prime time asset that's signed in return for a rental player no matter who good he is

Jay (Detroit)

With Filpulla being a free agent this summer and wanting more than the wings want to pay, do you see Holland moving him at the trade deadline for a pick or player? if not, will the wings do anything at the deadline to improve this squad?

Pierre LeBrun
  (12:35 PM)

My understanding is that Wings still want to sign FIl. But having said that, the next 2-3 weeks before April 3 in terms of W's and L's will have huge bearing on Detroit's direction on many fronts

Suburban Rhythm (Pittsburgh)

Should the Epns mess with the Kunitz - Crosby - Dupuis line right now? I'd love to see Iggy here on Crosby's RW, and bump Duper to the 3rd line. But, if it ain't broke...

Pierre LeBrun
  (12:36 PM)

I think if you add talent/character/experience you do it and figure out the rest later

Mark (SV)

Any chance Gaborik gets moved to clear some cap space?

Pierre LeBrun
  (12:36 PM)

Not sure if there's any takers on his $7.5 M , 2013-14 salary but he's certainly available

terry (the tundra)

What is your lateest take on Minny signing Parise and Suter, and are they legitimate cup contenders this year?

Pierre LeBrun
  (12:38 PM)

they're playoff bound for sure in my opinion.Cup contender? What's a Cup contender? 8th-seeded Kings won the Cup last year. 8th-seeded Oilers went to Cup finals in 2006. Get in and you've got a shot

Jake (San Francisco)

What is the possibility of the Sharks letting go of Ryan Clowe at the trade deadline? If not who else could they let go of and for what in return?

Pierre LeBrun
  (12:39 PM)

Here's what I've been hearing on San Jose: next 2-3 weeks huge huge huge in determining whether the keep the band together for one last run or if there's too much losing over next 2-3 weeks, it's time to ''reset" the roster....Clowe (UFA July 5) would be affected either way by that decision. There have been contract talks between SJ and Clowe's agent but so far no extension.. .

john (Toronto)

What are the moves the leafs should make by the trade deadline and in the summer to be a legitimate contender next year

Pierre LeBrun
  (12:41 PM)

I know this is hard to take for Leaf fans but I think the most courageous thing for Dave Nonis to do is to avoid doing anything that sees him give up any youth or draft picks. For 30 years this franchise has taken shortcuts and never looked at the big picture. This team needs time to grow, it needs draft picks to continue to adad prospects, it needs patience !

Riley (St. Louis, Missouri)

How much longer is Tarasenko out and would he have a come back game like Crosby had last year in his first game back from the first concussion?

Pierre LeBrun
  (12:42 PM)

I heard today that it's possible Tarasenko could play sometime next week Same for Andy M

tdiddy (winnipeg) [via mobile]

Now I feel bad about my last message.

Pierre LeBrun
  (12:43 PM)

haha, no worries bud

Rodrigo (Mexico City)

Is there any way the NYR trade Gaborik to the Pens?

Pierre LeBrun
  (12:43 PM)

no

Sam (Portland)

As a Habs fan, I keep pinching myself after the terrible season that we had last year. Every time I look at the standings and see us still at the top of the east I can't help but be amazed. I know Boston and Pittsburgh are probably the best in the east but do you think that the Habs have a shot at the Cup or are we still needing some pieces?

Pierre LeBrun
  (12:44 PM)

Like I said earlier, people have to stop asking me if a team has a chance at the Cup. Once you're in the playoffs, you have a chance ! Parity-filled NHL.Having said that, you're correct: Pitt and Bos are the class of the East. Habs have more holes than them. But what a story they've been. Super story this season

Paul (DC)

Can you please tell GMGM to trade Ribeiro while his stock is higher than it could ever be, especially after the Getzlaf deal???

Pierre LeBrun
  (12:45 PM)

Wouldn't surprise me if they tried to re-sign Ribeiro actually

Claude Girioux (Philadelphia, PA)

Hey Pierre, do you want to know my reaction to the Getzlaf contract?? CHA-CHING! If Getzy can get a cap hit that high, the suds will be flying in Hearst the night I become a free agent! And you are invited! Jonathan Toews is standing next to me and he is nodding vigorously as well....

Pierre LeBrun
  (12:45 PM)

haha, true enough my friend !

Joseph (New York)

how would PITT handle such salary for Iginla if acquired? crosby, malkin, letang, fluery

Pierre LeBrun
  (12:46 PM)

Iggy is UFA after the season. He's a rental, small cap hit late in the season

Pierre LeBrun
  (12:48 PM)

Someone asked me earlier about Leaf goaltending: here's what I hear, they'd be willing to acquire a veteran netminder if the price was reasonable but Leafs brass really believes in Reimer/Scrivens

Marc (Malden, MA)

Last year only 5 teams averaged more than 3 goals/game. Right now it's only 7. What can the league do to increase scoring? I don't want every game to be 7-6, but I'm also tired of seeing 2-1 every night.

Pierre LeBrun
  (12:50 PM)

One thing I've always said, why not make a player sit out his full two-minute penalty even if the other teams scores? I've always like that idea

John (Charlotte, NC)

Can the Canes keep it up without Ward and win the Southeast?

Pierre LeBrun
  (12:50 PM)

yes

Mark (Toronto)

Hi Pierre, re: the Corey Perry situation, if he has not signed then the Ducks have to consider moving him, while not hurting their postseason chances. What say you a trade for Kessel, gardiner, and a pick/prospect, is that even a reasonable starting point?

Pierre LeBrun
  (12:50 PM)

again, not sure any team would want to give up the farm for a rental player?

Roger (parts unknown)

Not only do the canucks lack a #2 center they lack a one shot scorer, has there been any discussion about them looking for that type of forward. Would a deal around Ballard and Gaborik work?

Pierre LeBrun
  (12:51 PM)

they've looked mostly for No. 3 centres

Jimmie (Ottawa)

Assuming Cory Perry is not resigned by Anaheim, do you see Ottawa making a play for him next summer?

Pierre LeBrun
  (12:51 PM)

given the Bryan Murray connection that would not surprise me

Joe (DC)

Hiya Pierre: Alex Ovechkin has taken a lot of deserved criticism this year. He needs to reinvent himself and come back as Ovechkin 2.0. If you were giving him advice, what former NHL-er would you have him work with over the summer to learn some new things about hockey? Which former NHL-er had the most success adjust his game when opponents "caught on?"

Pierre LeBrun
  (12:54 PM)

I'd have him spent the off-season with 2 people:1. Pavel Datsyuk2. Gary Roberts

Jay (Detroit)

Even though he's going to be an FA, would Holland consider making a trade to get Perry for the rest of the season to make the playoffs, and have first crack at signing him?

Pierre LeBrun
  (12:55 PM)

First of all, IF IF IF IF Anaheim deals Perry, it would be to the Eastern Conference for sure

Stuwart (Anaheim)

Can we please show some love to Beauchemin and Hiller! Just look at the numbers, and the Ducks record!

Pierre LeBrun
  (12:55 PM)

Had Beauch on my Norris candidate list for mid-season awards !

Jason (Ontario)

Regarding yiur comment on players sitting out the entire 2 min utes of a penalty. didnt they use to do that? And they had to change the rule because Montreal was scoring too much on the power play?????

Pierre LeBrun
  (12:56 PM)

yes in the origins of the NHL they sat out full 2 min I believe

Mike (SJ)

What do you think? 5 minute major for starting a fight after a clean hit. I'm sick of seeing every clean, big hit followed up by a fight...

Pierre LeBrun
  (12:56 PM)

agreed !!!!!!!!!!

Julian (Vancouver)

After seeing the penalty shot by Henrik Sedin last night, I'm wondering why he was not used more in the shoot out?

Pierre LeBrun
  (12:57 PM)

haha, don't you think AV had the same thought as well, haha

Jay (Lake Erie)

Will Buffalo be buyers or sellers? With that being said, we are having a heated discussion in the office, and someone thinks that a Goalie is the most overrated player on the ice, I could not disagree more. I think he is the most important player on the team, your thoughts?

Pierre LeBrun
  (12:57 PM)

Buyers??!?!?!?!!?!?!?!?!?!?!??

Alex (California)

If the Kings do make a move shouldn't they be targeting some defensemen? With the loss of Greene and Mitchell not back yet.

Pierre LeBrun
  (12:58 PM)

Yes they are doing both: they can add both a forward as well as a defenseman and think they'll try to do bothcap is in good shape for this year

Moshe Topy (Utah)

There sure are a lot of Corry Perry questions!

Pierre LeBrun
  (12:58 PM)

imagine that ! haha

Andy (Newport Beach)

Pierre, what teams offseasons acquisitions are looking the best right now?

Pierre LeBrun
  (12:59 PM)

Souray/Allen/Winnik in Anaheim all look greatPrust in Montreal was a super oneObviously Suter/Parise in MinnyJVR in TorontoMethot in Ottawa there's more but my brain is mush

Pierre LeBrun
  (1:00 PM)

OK cool cats, sorry for all those I didn't get to, lots of questions ! Enjoy the weekend and the action on the ice.Cheers all
