I beg to differ from my colleages on a couple of Turn 4 questions today. Here are the four for today: _ Is Bristol still a big deal? Is Hornish for real. Was Denny's fine out of line? Is Kenseth a Hall of Famer? Check it out: http://tinyurl.com/alp7tqh
I continue to be impressed with Dale Jr, when will Ryan put him at #1 in his rankings?
You'll have to ask my man McGee, but why would he? Yes, Junior is off to a great start, but he doesn't lead the standings and hasn't wo a race, so why would he rank him No. 1?
Afternoon Terry, does Kenseths win prove that he is the #1 driver at Gibbs?
No. It's proves he can win in the 20 car and could have a great season. It's only three races.
This new car has been a dud so far! There's hardly any passing and the nobody can get past the leader! NASCAR needs to admit they were wrong in fining Denny Hamlin and own up to their mistakes!
NASCAR was too thin-skinned in fining Dennny, but the car raced pretty well at Vegas. There were quite a few passes for the lead, more than ever there, statistically, and more passes overall than any Cup race there. The first half of the race went almost all green, so the field got spread out, which would happen with any car.
Where are the drivers racing next week? I don't recall where they are going. Go Danica!!!
Fact of Fiction: Las Vegas had a great Cup race.
Great, no. But not terrible. It was a nice battle for the win in the last 25 laps between Matt and Kahne, and Kasey showed you could pass the leader to get out front, which he did four times Sunday.
Hi Terry, isn't Indy 500 winner Hornish dropping down to compete agains young, inexperienced drivers in Nationwide the equalivent of AJ Foyt or Rick Mears doing the same thing? Why don't they race against other drivers at their level?
No, because he isn't AJ or Rick Mears. What's bad is full-time Cup stars like Kyle and Brad running too many NW races.
How will Tony Stewart do this year?
Not off to a booming start, but he'll be fine and make the Chase.
NASCAR came out with some stats about a high number of lead changes and green-flag passes at Vegas but weren't most of those during the several rounds of green-flag pit stops? Who are they trying to fool?
Some were, but I counted seven passes for the lead that weren't about pit stops, actual drivers racing side-by-side up front. People really have unrealistic expectations. In Petty's day, most races had three of four cars on the lead lap at the end, if that many.
On a more serious note, I'm assuming we'll see some side by side racing this week at a track that was desecrated to improve 2 wide racing?
Yes we will, but fans complain because Bristol doesn't have all the wrecks and tempers tantrums it used to have.
Yep these cars suck ! Will I get a 25k fine for saying that ? Does B. France cancel my tickets to Dover ? Will I get called to the hauler and told Nascar does not need me as a fan I need Nascar ? After all I know how far reaching their power can be. Maybe I should hold my comments to myself after all I know whose sanbox I go to watch others play in.
Griffin, you must write "I Love Gen-6" 100 times on a chalk board. But seriously, this car is fine. And it's going to get better.
The speeding penalty for Denny Hamlin surely fed some conspiracy theories. In any other televised sport, a foul or penalty can be replayed so viewers can see for themselves whether the call was correct. Except NASCAR speeding penalties. Why have the networks not developed a way to measure a car's speed and verify NASCAR's speeding penalties? Has NASCAR pressured them not to?
When asked, NASCAR will show the data. Hamlin was speeding on pit road, which was a common problem for a lot of drivers at Vegas. It's a tight turn on to pit road and they had to get down to 45 mph. And if you believe in a conspiracy, NASCAR wouldn't have thrown a caution that allowed Denny to get back on the lead lap.
When will you stop making excuses for Danica!? She was HORRIBLE in these last two races and it is clear she is not ready for Cup. Never in all my years of watching NASCAR have I seen so much coverage for a backmarker! It's absolutely ridiculous and I'm sick of it.
We will add you to the list of Danica haters Andrew. But people who care about her and like her outnumber you about 100 to 1.
Your top 5 drivers and a darkhorse for Bristol?
Kyle, Harvick, Brad, Matt and Bowyer. Darkhorse is Montoya.
Vegas was a step in the right direction. Soften the tire
I agree, but it's a fine line for Goodyear.
With SHR off to a terrible start, especially Danica and Newman, do you expect Harvick to be in the #39 next year teamed with Danica and Tony?
Yes, unless they have sponsorship to run four cars.
Since Kurt Busch has proven he's a Bristol master do you expect Kurt to be the best finishing RCR car on Sunday?
Maybe, but I expect Harvick to be the best RCR finisher. The 78 team is off to a terrible start. I expected better.
I have a different take on Hamlin. If I put out a new chicken sandwich at my restaurant and I saw one of my employees on TV saying that the old chicken sandwich was better, I fire him on the spot.
A fair point, but I don't think Denny's comment were all that bad. What NASCAR should ahve done was privately talk to him and tell him to give it time. By fining him, they brought far more attention to his comment than it would have received.
Will you be at the Fontana race? Who has the best record there (win-wise)?
Not at Fontana this time. JJ has the best record at ACS with five wins.
Other than Matt, do you think Rowdy had the best race going from pit road penalty to that amazing 3-wide pass to a great 4th placed finish?
Kyle showed his amazing skills behind the wheel, but he also has shown this season that he makes mistakes that hurt his team.
Why does Goodyear have so much trouble putting out a softer compound that wears and teams can race with? If Pirelli can do it for F1 (they have 4 different compounds), what stops Goodyear?
Fear of another Tiregate debacle like the one at Indy a few years ago, for one thing. They don't want tires blowing out and tearing up at high speeds, but there has to be a middle ground in here somewhere
What do you think about Jeff Gorden this year??!!
Not off to a great start, but way too early to judge.
Do you expect Gen 6 to race Bristol in similar fashion as last year?
I don't think the car makes a lot of difference at a short track like Bristol.
Rowdy admitted he put his team in the hole where in the past I don't ever remember Rowdy admitting a mistake
Good point. That's a step in the right direction.
I'm so sick and tired of the Danica haters and since she's not going anywhere for a long time maybe it's the haters that should leave?
Hey, lovers or haters, they all make it interesting.
Do expect Bad Brad to continue being the king of Bristol?
I wouldn't call him that, but I think he'll have a strong run.
Is Rowdy Brad showing you writers something? How many of you counted him out again because of the switch to Ford??
I don't think anyone counted him out, but many of us questioned how the transition would go switching to Ford and leasing engines. So far so good.
Is Jimmie Johnson good for the sport. He's a NASCAR yes man
Really unfair to say that, and of course he's good for the sport. The man is a five-time champion and a class act.
Logano has started out good just don't have the luck on there side . They have been fast at every track soo far do u see him making the chase
No I don't, but he could have some good runs and possibly win a race.
I agree with Matt, I think Goodyear has gotten way to conservative. They worry way more about their reputation than putting on a good show. Also, they don't hesitate to tweet that it was the teams fault when a tire blows
Often it is the team's fault Scott because they put so much camber in the tires and cause too much load in the turns.
Are you surprised at how quickly Kasey Kahne and Kenny Francis have established the #5 team as the 2nd best HMS team behind Jimmie and Chad?
It's way too early to say that. They had a great run in Vegas, but after three races, they are officially the fourth-best Hendrick car in the points standings.
Terry, based on what we have seen out of Stenhouse so far, what do you think his chances are of making the Chase?
I'd say about 40/60. He has a shot, but it'll be tough.
Will J. Long ever get a fair chance to show that she is probably the best female driver out there?
I hope she gets a chance in better equipment soon, but she has a long way to go before she equals Danica's accomlishments in racing.
Hi Terry! How high of a turnout is expected this weekend? I would hate to see that track lose its spring date....
No matter what the turnout is, Bristol is losing a date.
Do you think Hamlin wins his appeal, that way NASCAR can save some face because the decision is taken out of their hands.
I'd say it's less than 50/50, but it might be good for everyone if he does.
You are the King of NASCAR for one day. You can make one change, that can never be overturned (or not within say five years). What is it?
Reduce the schedule to 32 events.
so what did you think about what denny said last week before the vegas race and do you think he will end up paying the fine or might get a suspended by nasar
He will pay it if he loses the appeal. He can't risk a suspension that would hurt FedEx and possibly cause him to miss the Chase.
Say what! Are you saying Bristol will lose one of its two dates..
I said it never will lose one of it's dates.
If you could eliminate one race from the Nascar schedule, what would it be?
I'll give you three _ one Dover, one Pocono, one Michigan. I'll have to think about the other one. And I would move the All-Star race around to a different track every year.
silly season predictions- Newman to 55, Martin to 78 to split ride with Ty Dillon, Kurt to the 29, Vickers to 4th JGR car. what do ya think?
Wow Jay. It's three races in. Give us a break. And Ty isn't moving to Cup next year. Austin is.
You shorten the race schedule, so now as NASCAR King, what would be the ideal average number of laps in a race?
400 miles or 400 laps at Bristol and Martinsville. Keep the Daytona 500 and the Coca-Cola 600. Nothing else needs to be 500 anything.
What mistakes has Kyle made to hurt his team. Building bad engines? Racing too hard? I get the sppeding but what else?
Spinning and brushing the wall. Kyle is a great driver, but sometimes he's over aggressive and damages his equipment. But you're right, last year he would have made the Chase witout the engine failures over the summer.
Do you prefer more night or day races?
Depends on the event, but I generally like night races. They car look cool under the lights.
How will this fuel only trend change the racing and the outcomes?
It just means different strategies for different team, which isn't bad. Adds drama. But it won't be the case everywhere. It depends on the track and how the cautions fall.
I am not sure that all of Kyle's engine problems were TRD issues. How many engine failures are driver error? Newman admitted missing a shift at Vegas which caused the problem.
That's a good point Frank. It also can be how the team sets up the car and how much stress they put on the motor. I asked that question to a Toyota official last week, about why it happened more to the 18 than the other Toyota teams, but he din't really give me an answer.
Did the Air Titans work as advertised at Vegas?
Wasn't there. The AT is back at the R&D Center in North Carolina getting some updates. So we still don't know how well it will work and how many races this year we'll see it.
Three races and one win each for HMS, Roush and Joe Gibbs Racing. Is this 2013 'parity"?
Maybe. Nice to see one Chevy, one Ford and one Toyota already have a win. The more competitive cars out there the better.
so how do you see this up and coming weekand in Bristol you see like more beating and banging or just some old boring stuff riding around the top on the word fastest half mile thanks
Probably a combination of the two, with bumping and banging down the stretch.
Just wanted to say I appreciate all of you guys taking these questions, it's nice to have a place to air our opinions as fans, keep up the good work!
Thanks Dave. It's gets a little crazy sometimes, but that makes it fun.
Still a little miffed at Kahne's Phoenix race, missed setup, but so far after 3 weeks he is ahead of last years pace. Is this the Kahne everyone was picking to be a serious title contender? Or is he still in that sorta 2nd tier pack of drivers
I think Kasey can be a serious championship contender this season.
with the entry list hovering around 43-44 cars a week nowadays, do you think NASCAR will life the 4 car rule per team as more young talent move up the ranks but are stuck without a ride in Cup series?
I don't think that would change anything Walter. The 4-car rule is a bit phony anyway. Hendrick has an alliance with Stewart. Roush has a relationship with Petty. Lifing the 4-car rule wouldn't add cars because the sponosorship isn'tere to do it.
Since Jason Ratcliff was Kyle's Nationwide crew chief do you see Coach making a cc change with Rowdy taking Jason and sending Dave over to the #20?
Not a chance in you know where of that happening.
Who do you see getting Bristol's spring date?
No one. Bristol isn't losing date. Not now, not ever.
so what is yu take on jr strong start this year and do you think he will be in the championship battle by the end of the yearGO JR...
He has a shot at it, before befor I'm convinced he can get there he needs to show me he can win more than one race a season.
Hi Mr. Blount, I didn't like seeing how Vickers was racing his teammate Kyle Busch in the NW race and wondered if Coach and JD need to sit Vickers down and tell him to cool the inter-team rivalry stuff?
No, he needs to tell Kyle not to get upset if NW title contenders race him hard when he's just out there as a Cup guy getting practice time.
I would strip dates from Michigan, Pocono, Dover, Loudon, and Bristol, and add dates at Iowa and Road Atlanta.
I could live with all that except Bristol.
Gotta run folks. Hope everyone has a great week and we see some of the old Bristol-style racing this weekend. I'm out. Peace.
