Apologies. Major internet issues in downtown Nashville. I blame SEC hoops tournament. I'll try to get to as much as I can. Thanks for your patience.
The Titans were rumored to be in the hunt for Amendola until the Pats snagged him. Is there any reason to expect them to pursue someone else (i.e. Jennings)? At worst, is this a sign they are looking to lower Britts role in the offense?
Next guy is Brandon Gibson. With Britt in a contract year and given his history, don't know how much they can expect from him.
If the Colts get Ricky-Jean Francois today, what are their needs in the draft then? Almost everyone they signed is expected to play or start in positions of need, so i'm not sure what they need to do in the draft.
They'd still get O-line options and a WR for sure. Also a pass rusher, a corner, a safety.
Do you think the Jags are trying to obtain compensatory picks for next year? How do compensatory picks work? Is it the net free agents you signed or lost? Or does it depend on the amount of money spent in free agency?
You don't decide to let a free agent leave thinking about the compensatory pick you'll get for him a year later. Formula weighs gains versus losses in this year's free agency, awards compensatory picks accordingly the next year.
Am I crazy to think that Reed might not be a long term upgrade/solution for the Texans? I can't imagine he'll take less $ than Quin, and he isn't as versatile. It just makes me think of Ahman Green all over again.
Of course he's not long term. He's old. It would be a couple years at most. Draft his eventual replacement this year and it's fine. Green was nowhere near the player Reed is.
Assuming the Titans are done in free agency, who do you think they would choose between Milliner and Warmack if both are there @ 10?
Milliner. But he won't be there.
I may be reading too much into this, but the Titans FA moves seem to show a lack of faith in Jake Locker as far as giving him the keys to the offense. Last year it seemed as if they were going to be wide open on offense whereas these moves show a commitment to the run game.
Which opens up a passing offense.
Do you see Reed being a good fit inside if Houston is able to resign Barwin?
They've said over and over while Brooks Reed can go inside in a pinch, they aren't moving him.
With the Titans free agency moves so far, do you think we still may target one of the top guards in the draft? If not who else do you think the front would be looking at?
I think, at worst, they draft Warford in the second.
If Ed Reed were to sign with Houston, would this be a reaction to losing Quin? Looking around the web it seems as if GM Smith was targeting Reed as a stop gap the whole time... Thoughts?
If they were in on Reed from the start, they they weren't serious about keeping Quin. And as they never made him an offer, it's hard for them to say they wanted him back.
Which is accurate? a) Gabbert<=Henne<=Cassell b) Hennee<=Gabbert<=Cassell c) Henne<=Cassell<=Gabbert d) Gabbert=Henne=Cassell
Those are a lot of arrows. All about the same. Cassel's actually done something. But it's ancient history and Bill Belichick-supported.
In your opinion: Your favorite AFC South Free Agency move thus far? Biggest head scratching AFC South Free Agency move thus far?
LaRon Landry and Andy Levitre are the two best moves. Erik Walden's money is by far the biggest head-scratcher.Who was offering him half that?
Any news out there in Barwin interest? I for one hope his less than stellar "stat season" keeps him in the Texans price range.
Only team connected to him so far is Philly.
Could you quickly compare and contrast Jared Cook and Delanie Walker's Skill sets? Did the Titans improve with that signing?
Walker more versatile in terms of catching AND blocking, but had drop issues last year and hasn't been a featured guy. Cook is a less reliable route runner and not as willing or good of a blocker. More dynamic with the ball in his hands.
I understand if you look at the totality of Waldens contract it is bit confusing, but only 4 million is gauranteed. Its safe to assume the colts left themselves an out if he doesnt pan out.
Who else was guaranteeing him $4 million. [Later in the day I posted about the contract. It's $8 million guaranteed.]
Was there ever a chance the Texans were going to cut Schaub to create cap room for other team needs. It just seems like his contract, like Flacco's, is holding the team back from making the moves they need to.
No. Teams have to work around QB contracts.
Any news on the Titans and Sensabaugh, i read an article yesterday that said the Titans might have been interested.
I hope not. He's brutal.
Is Toler capable of being an everyday starter? Or is he more of a nickle guy and the colts should be targeting another corner to be their starter?
I like him. If healthy I'd give him every chance to win a starting job. Would like for him to have more competition out of the draft though.
Why do the Titans feel the need to change their receivers? (trying to trade washington) I would think they would want to get rid of the Britt headache if anyone goes.
Will post on this in a bit and reveal some of the rationale.
Did you read where Brice McCain's agent thinks he is worth 3.5 to 5 mil a year? He should go on a comedy tour with that act!
Now he says McCain has two offers. Let's find someone who'll bet they are in that range. Hallucinating.
Did the Texans burn any bridges when they let Kevin Walter go? If he doesn't get a contract from another team, or one he likes, would he be willing to come back to the Texans?
Who cares if you burn a bridge with a guy you need to replace? It's not bridge club! He'd be willing to go somewhere where he'd have work.
Are the Titans done addressing the safety position with George Wilson, or do you see them taking one early in the draft?
Wouldn't have a problem with one in the draft who could grow behind Griffin and Wilson, maybe play in some situations.
Shonne Green fills the Titans back field up nicely--do they draft another RB in the draft?
Do need a third. Jamie Harper is under contract.
I see Greene as the short yardage back for the Titans but with Munch saying he is a three down back, what do you See?
Of course Munchak says Greene can play three downs. They just convinced him to come to Nashville. One thing to say he can. Doesn't mean he will.
Did you listen to that Nix/Dominik tape? Seems like Nix was saying Grigson is over-hyped due to Luck. Perhaps the Walden signing is a clue that may be true?
What about the Jerrell Freeman signing? Darius Butler? We're going to put a thumbs down on Grigson for what looks like a bad contract before we see the guy who got it play a down? Also, what the hell has Buddy Nix done that we care what he thinks?
any news on a free agent pass rusher for the titans?
News is they wanted an inside guy and got him in Hill. Seem content outside for now.
Do you feel, like I do, that these signings are setting up for the Colts to target a receiver in the draft? Also with not resigning Avery.
Sure. I don't think they tried to re-sign Avery, and they shouldn't have.
Is this the most Titans FA moves ever? I can't remember more in an offseason
There was a Chris Hope, David Thornton, Kevin Mawae, David Givens class that I am sure had some other guys later.
J Powers is most likely gone any rumors on teams that are interested in him?
Signed with Arizona.
Are there any AFC South players who are dog people willing to adopt? I'm not asking for me. See I've got this friend, "Ginley". You don't know him.
And here I thought you've been happier lately.
Do you see these early moves by the Titans as evidence they might be able to compete in the AFC South next season? Seems to me we have much work left to do.
C'mon. The quarterback hasn't done a thing yet. They aren't contending for the division.
Would you consider the Colts O-Line to be significantly improved by those 2 signings? What about the defense?
O-line is significantly improved, yes. I like Landry and Toler. Not sure the pass rush is good enough yet.
Are you an active Grantland reader? I'm just wondering why Barnwell is always so down on the Colts. Maybe it's his connection to Simmons' rabid Patriot fan fanaticism?
He's connected to a Patriots fan, so he's hard on a Patriots rival? Wow is that some convoluted logic. I'm sorry, but Barnwell doesn't spend a single second thinking of that while he's penning his opinions.
Biggest question for each team now that we are on day 3 of FA?
The single biggest question in the division is the Jaguars secondary. To that I'd add Texans receivers, Titans pass rush, Colts pass rush.
I know you say you dont root for specific teams, but surely it must be more fun to report for a good division as opposed to a crappy one, right?
At certain times of year, sure. Like playoffs. But this time of year? Way more fun to be writing about Titans than Texans as Texans are going to be largely unchanged.
Ed Reed a good or bad decision in your estimation? Thoughts on Texans having drafted 12 secondary players in 7 years yet ultimately having to fill the secondary with FA acquisitions?
If half of those guys were late rounders and a couple of the others reach free agency and leave, it's hardly an indictment. If they can get Reed, they should. Then draft a guy who can replace him in a year or two.
colts take a olb or a de with there 1st pick
You'd have to tell me all the available guys. They are not going into the draft saying we have to have an X at 24.
Get a veteran pass rusher cheap, restructure Hasselbeck's deal, draft Warmack AND then Matt Elam in the 2nd. Too optomistic?
You can't restructure Hasselbeck. He's in his last year. You'd have to extend him. I don't think they are interested in the three veteran rushers.
News out of Denver is that they are interested in Barwin. How would that affect the Texans? (I.E. improving the Broncos while weakening the Texans) Or is he completely expendable?
It's presumptive, based on his performance last year, so say he improves Denver and would weaken Texans.
Do the Texans have a legit shot at getting Greg Jennings?
They have no shot at getting him, because they aren't interested in him.
Have the Titans addressed the "depth" portion of the O-line yet or is there anyone they are looking at to fill that need?
You don't address depth early in free agency. It's for later in FA or the draft.
Which move will fanbases lament more in the coming years. Walden w/Colts or Wallace w/Miami?
Wallace has far more long-term financial consequences and is in a different stratosphere. Can't talk about them in same conversation.
What do you think of all the Jags coaches and front office at Geno Smith's/ West Virgina pro day? Genuine interest?
Just like the interest they'll have in anyone that will go early in the draft.
PK, a few free agency articles I've read over the past couple days seem to agree that the Titans have committed to overpaying their free agent acquisitions. I know only production will confirm or deny this, but any thoughts on the contracts given to there newest signings?
Overpaid, yes. It's what you do to get guys in the door. None of it was drastic or kills their cap.
What are the chances the Texans take someone completely out of left field, someone that no one is talking about them taking. Seems to happen quite often:2012 - Mercilus2011 - Watt2010 - Jacksonetc..
That's the chance with anyone every year.
With the Texans seemingly being interested in Reed from the start, you think management sees this as a Superbowl or bust year?
What qualifies as bust?
What direction do you see the Titans going in the draft now that they have signed Levitre?
Guard, pass rusher top two needs.
Could the Jags have been at the WVU pro day looking at Steadman Bailey for the second round?
They look at everyone who works out at a pro day when they go to one.
Don't suppose the Titans would be in the market for Bernard Pollard, do you? I know they just got George Wilson, but he led the Superbowl champs in tackles, and is a couple years younger than Wilson...
Pollard bounces around for a reason. Kind of a pain in the butt. The Titans aren't in the market for a veteran safety now.
Are you a mock draft guy?
No. But the blog network will do one near the draft.
The few times last season Andrew Luck actualy had time in the pocket, he made some INSANE plays. With a revamped Oline do you think Luck makes the jump to elite this year?
Wary of the elite definition. Probably have to win a SB to qualify. I don't think Colts are wining the SB.
PK, are we primed to see another CJ2K season?
They just signed a guy to take carries away from him. No way.
I thought there was a minimum amount of money you had to spend with the new CBA? For example, the cap is 120 million but you have to spend 100 million.
You have to spend 96 percent or something like that, but it's over the course of a four-year period, I believe.
Any chance Pollard goes back to Texans?
Would be a huge shock. Doesn't cover well, which is why they let him leave.
After these signings, about how much money does each team have left?
Hope to update soon.
Who is this LB that the Titans just signed? Is he a plug in guy along with some special teams? Seems undersized.
Moise Fokou. Was with Colts. Can play inside or outside. Decent fourth backer and special teamer.
I guess you don't see Shonne Green as a Lendale White type then?
Nevermind what I see. That's what they see.
What do you make of the Jags letting Cox walk?
Feared his injury history. As I would have.
You think the Texans will look to draft a QB in the mid-to-late rounds? And what do you think their long-term outlook is on Yates, who looked alright but obviously is limited in his ability as a downfield passer?
I don't think they have a big concern about their QB of the future right now.
Who do the Colts have at nose tackle? I know Antonio Johnson is a FA, are they trying to resign him?
Champman and McKinney both coming off injuries.
How does Houston look to fill the gap at FB with casey leaving (Draft or free agent) and are there any names going around
You can find a FB on the street the day before the season starts.
PK, your awesome baby with a capital A! Now let's go drink some scotch.
Little early, but I like the sentiment. Sorry again for late start. Cheers to all.
Is the CB position different in 4-3 and 3-4 systems or are they "universal"?
Largely universal. The question is man or zone, not 4-3 or 3-4.
Does houston try to upgrade at NT in FA?
Probably in the draft. I think they should sign Roy Miller from the Bucs for the job.
OK kids, that's a wrap. Thanks!
