Do you predict a Heisman runner from the Horns this year, if so, who?
No, I do not. Besides the fact that Texas needs to build a lot of positive momentum in 2013, I don't know that any one person puts up the numbers to make a run at the Heisman. There will be plenty of talk about All-Big 12 honors and a few All-American considerations, but there will be no Heisman talk.
Which coach(es) do you think are most likely to leave the program after this season?
That's too hard to call. The only way I see large-scale change would be if Mack Brown was no longer at Texas, and I'm out of the game of guessing when he will leave. I actually like his staff. I like it a lot. I do not see a bunch of change without a change at the top spot. I think most feel Manny Diaz would have to have a huge year in order to be put back in the conversation for head coaching vacancies around the country.
Erik Huhn, think he makes an name for himself once healthy?
I think he can. I like the fact that he likes being physical. I want to see if he can be quick enough and versatile enough to play safety at Texas the way Akina likes to use his safeties.
How bad are the Longhorns in trouble on OL and LB due to injury?
I know you will think I am crazy, but I don't think either position is in trouble. Both injured players will be back for the fall. If they were ACLs or were going to miss time during the season that would be a different deal. I think they are fine. The OL needs Harrison to come in and contribute right away, but that has nothing to do with injury.
Hey Sean Adams, I've been loving your chats, keep up the good work. IMO, the basketball team is just 1-2 years of experience away from be one of the best teams in the Big 12 again and making tournament pushes, and they're one elite recruit away from making a Final Four push with this squad. But this will take almost two years, Myck will be gone, and Barnes' system really needs a floor general like T.J. Ford and Augustine were to make his offense click like it should. I know Javan Felix has the tools to be that next player, but what's your prediction with him? Will he be ready to step up with this talented team or do you think Barnes will need to find another top point gaurd recruit for this squad?
Thanks for the kind words. I like Felix a lot. I do not think he is a T.J. Ford-level point guard, but he does not have to be, and most aren't. He is a good point guard, and plenty of teams have made tourney runs with point guards that are not as talented as Felix. With that said, this team needs more than experience, they need to be developed. That will be on Rick Barnes and his staff to get it done. Just because a player has years does not mean he is a good player. They have a shot to be good over the next few years, but it will take a lot of work, and they could use a recruit who's a top-level scorer.
With Cayleb Jones suspended from the team, who do you see as our top four WR?
Jaxon Shipley, Mike Davis, Kendall Sanders, Bryant Jackson ... and I'm still hoping for the big-bodied kid, John Harris. Jones was playing really well, but the team is not in danger while he is out right now.
How is Dalton Santos fitting in this spring? Is he grasping the defense better, making better reads, filling gaps and generally getting a better sense than last year? He looked great on special teams, when he just had to run down and hit people, but when it was on defense, he looked fairly lost.
From all indications he is doing much better and putting pressure on the MLB position. He has lost about 20 pounds, and that is helping him play faster and more fluid. He will still help his ability to shed blocks through technique work. He did get caught up in the wash a bunch last year, but I would expect that some for a freshmen.
Do you think with three good RBs our offense will run more with this fast-paced new offense to keep our RBs happy, or will they spread the ball around to Magic or Ship?
They can do both. Don't forget that Oregon was the master at the spread and tempo, and they led the country in rushing. There will be plenty of both and everyone's numbers will go up because they will run more plays over the course of the game.
Starting linebackers come fall practice?
This is a tough one, but I'll go with Jordan Hicks, Steve Edmond and Peter Jinkens, but Santos is making a push, too.
In 2015 which of the coaches will still be with Texas: Brown, Barnes, Garrido? P.S. - thank you, Auggie, for bringing Texas back in at least one main sport.
Could be all three are still at Texas, but there is also a scenario where I can see all three gone. Based on current information, I say Mack Brown would have the best chance of retiring by then, but that is my hunch based on nothing. Winning heals all wounds.
What do you make of Texas commit Demetrius Knox going to Ohio and visit his dad? His dad wants him to visit OSU while he's up there. To me I have no problem with our recruits visiting other campuses.
I think most people would not like it, and I'm sure it is one of the reasons that Mack Brown favors an early signing period. But, he is a 2014 recruit and hasn't even started his senior year yet. If his father want's him to take a visit somewhere, then who am I to say that he can't? I would hope that my son would respect my opinion enough to visit a school that I suggested. That is a tough policy to have when parents live in different areas and have different agendas. It comes down to Texas' relationship with the kid.
Do you think either of the two redshirt freshmen from last year have a chance at any significant playing time this year?
I'm assuming you mean at QB since there were two. I don't think either get significant playing time because David Ash is going to be the man.
I'm not hearing a lot of positive things about the OL. How can we make the up-tempo work without additional OL? From what I hear Sooner fans say, they were having trouble running it last season despite the experience they have doing it. Is this turing out to be just another ill-conceived plan?
I don't think so. The one thing about the OL is that two of the five that Texas is hoping or even expecting to be starting in 2013 are out with injury and not on campus until June in Cochran and Harrison. Don't forget that they don't have to look like a finished product in the spring. They need to know they can be there by the fall.
I believe you said Texas will win the Big 12 this year. If so, is it realistic to think we could have a standoff with Brown vs. Muchamp in the national championship game?
LOL, I'm not willing to go that far. I do think the Big 12 will come down to Texas and Oklahoma State. On paper, 1-85, Texas has the best team in the Big 12. They still have to own that and win. Regardless of where they are with the 1-85, how comfortable do you feel picking them to beat Oklahoma after that game last year? On paper and in reality are two different things.
What's good, Sean? Just want to know what you think about Texas hitting up The Big Easy to recruit football studs? I think it's great, but wouldn't it ruffle some feathers with our Texas boys? Thanks, Sean. Great work you're doing.
Thank you. I think people have to get over the ruffling feathers. Everybody loots the state of Texas. Texas has to get the best players possible. Many of them can come from Texas, but sometimes the better player is out of state.
Thanks for all of the great questions. I'll be back next week to chat it up some more.
