Chat with Pat Yasinskas

Seth (Missouri)

Why was Tony Gonzalez' new contract a 2 year deal?

Pat Yasinskas
  (12:57 PM)

Purely for salary-cap purposes. It's really a one-year deal with $1.75 million spread toward next year's cap.

GurS (Edgware, UK)

We all know the Bucs need at least two new corners. If they're adamant on pursuing Revis, why aren't we trying to sign a second (much-needed) corner? At best, gives us upgrades at both starting spots, at worst, becomes insurance if the Jets' FO decide to keep Revis

Pat Yasinskas
  (12:57 PM)

CB market isn't great, as the CBs are finding out. Think you'll see them add a CB as market continues to cool.

Ryan Mullen (DeRidder, LA)

I believe that Charles Brown is talented enough to keep Drew Brees off of the ground, considering NO's offensive style. He has been EXTREMELY injury-prone, though (he claims 100% health now). What are the chances he starts, and his backup comes from the draft? or, Does the LT need HAVE to be addressed in FA?

Pat Yasinskas
  (12:58 PM)

I'd get someone as an insurance policy. But I think they're hoping Brown can step up and be the guy.

Aaron (Atlanta)

With Steven Jackson on board, do you still think that the Falcons will draft a RB?

Pat Yasinskas
  (12:59 PM)

Probably not, unless they take a developmental guy later in draft.

Kyle Knapp (Tampa FL)

Pat, where do we stand with Revis, are things still looking good for us to trade for him? And are we in play with any other CBs that are still available?

Pat Yasinskas
  (12:59 PM)

Think it's still a possibility. But think Bucs are waiting for Jets to drop the price tag for compensation.

JM (Charlotte)

Why release James Anderson with the recent injury history of the Carolina linebacker group?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:00 PM)

Had way too much money tied up at LB.

Pete (ATL)

What changed your tune on Steven Jackson?? You were wary from the start, wa it the modestly priced short term contract?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:01 PM)

I wasn't wary. I said it wouldn't be a bad move. All I said was I thought it would be a better long-term solution to draft someone. Still feel that way, but also like the Jackson move.

Harry (TB)

How can Bucs be so sure Bowers won't serve prison time for bringing a loaded handgun in his carryon bag?? Letting Bennett leave for $5mm seems like a horrible idea, why are Bucs being so stingy?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:02 PM)

Bucs are confident Bowers will come out of that all right. I don't think Bennett was about being stingy -- they just paid a fortune to Goldson.

Geoff (DC)

Is Castillas a good pick up for Tampa? Seems we could have gotten a more production LB. Also, why hasn't gone after an OL, TE? Thanks

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:04 PM)

You could still see another LB added. Casillas is "just a guy". At best, he comes in and wins starting SLB job. At worst, he's a decent backup and special teams player, which is what he was with the Saints.

Marc (VA Beach)

After Tony's signing, do you think the Falcons still get a TE in the 1st round?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:04 PM)

Probably not. But think they will draft a TE somewhere after first round.

Joshua (Asheville)

Carolinas biggest need now is Cornerback on Defense and Guard or Tackle on Offensive Line. But also DT and they need to get a WR. How would you rank these priorities going into the draft for a team that cant be a signifigant player in free agency this year or next?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:05 PM)

CB, DT, WR and o-line would be my order.

John (Charlotte NC)

Pat I get it that the Panthers have very little room under the salary-cap to work with. But should the Panthers not free up some money in order to be able to improver the roster?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:06 PM)

Think that could still happen. There are several contracts that could easily be restructured.

dave (tampa) [via mobile]

where do the think the Bucs get the cornerbacks from this year free agency, draft or both

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:06 PM)

Both.

Khalif (Atlanta)

Any news on Brent Grimes resigning with falcons?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:07 PM)

All is very quiet on the Grimes front. Suspect that, like a lot of other CBs, he's finding out the market isn't what he thought it would be.

Kyle Knapp (Tampa FL)

Is Tyler Eifert a potential target for us in the draft if we hold on to the 13th pick?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:08 PM)

Just my personal opinion, but I wouldn't take a TE that early.

Big Dan (St. Leo College)

I think the Bucs should go after David Carr to push Josh Freemanand so we would have decent back up since Rudy Carpenter. What do you think? Who else should the Bucs consider????????????????

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:08 PM)

Could happen. Carr has ties to Mike Sullivan.

Michael- Orlando [via mobile]

Pat, is today the day for a Revis trade since he will get a 1 million check from the jets tomorrow??

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:09 PM)

Could be. Don't think anything is close right now. But that could change with one phone call.

Brock (Aspen, CO)

If Dumervil gets released by the Broncos, any chance the Falcons may a play at him?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:09 PM)

Would think that's something they'd at least consider. Pretty obvious that pass rush is the big need right now.

Tim (Atlanta)

Do you think allowing Gonzalez to skip training camp while his teammates grind it out sets a bad precedent? Favoring one vet, while highly accomplished and future HOFer, seems like a bad idea - sends a message to the rest of the squad that they are not as important. I know you don't think its a big deal, but I don't like the potential lockerroom fallout

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:11 PM)

First off, I don't think he's taking all of training camp off. Second, Smith always has gone easy on the over-30 guys in camp. Third, he's Tony Gonzalez -- they'll let him do what he wants.

Brock (Aspen, CO)

At this point, approximately how much money do the Falcons have left to spend on FA?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:12 PM)

Can't give you an accurate answer until I see the structure of the Jackson deal.

Eric (Arcata, CA)

Do you know if Shann Schillinger will give up his #39 to SJAX because I want to order my new SJAX jersey in time for the draft

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:13 PM)

We'll find out when Jackson has his press conference this afternoon. But I would imagine he'll get No. 39.

Tony (Coloardo)

Is brent grimes still an option in Tampa

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:13 PM)

Yes and also in Atlanta and probably other places.

Ross (Hawaii)

Does signing bonuses and and incentives count against the salary cap?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:13 PM)

Yep.

Ryan (Melbourne, FL)

Pat, Do you think Tampa is going to release Eric Wright? and what is going on with the grievance he filed?? Thanks

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:14 PM)

Don't know on the grievance, but think it's a long shot that he'll win it. Think they're holding on to him just until they get some other CBs.

IKNOWFOOTBALLKNOWLEDGE (CT)

DO YOU THINK THE PANTHERS ARE GOING TO DRAFT A DT OR WR and also I could see the PANTHERS drafting an OG in the first what do you think?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:15 PM)

I'd go CB if there's one there in first round.

Rabieh Saad (New Jersey)

Why wasn't James Anderson released prior to the start of Free Agency? Wouldn't that been better as for the Cap.

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:16 PM)

No, it made no difference. They designated him a June 1 release, which means cap hit will be spread over this year and next.

Preston (New York)

Are the Bucs losers in free agency? It seems like Dominik has put all his eggs on Revis Island. Isn't a bird in the hand worth two in the bush? Prices for CBs have been lower than expected. Could have gotten one of them while waiting on Revis. Also, any word on Grimes?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:17 PM)

From what I've heard, they weren't crazy about the CBs in free agency.

Alex (Charleston, SC)

Do you hear any buzz regarding the panthers going DT or WR in the draft? Which of the WRs do they prefer, Tavon Austin? Cordarelle Patterson?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:18 PM)

I wouldn't mind seeing Austin if they go in that direction.

Michael (SC)

What do you see Atlanta doing on defense now?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:18 PM)

Getting a pass rusher somehow.

David (Vancouver)

Are the Bucs eligible for a compensatory pick for M. Bennett?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:19 PM)

Not if they end up signing more free agents than they lose.

Greg (Tampa)

Think Ogletree is an upgrade over Underwood or Benn?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:20 PM)

Could be. Bucs obviously must see potential there.

Ross (Hawaii)

Do you think Carolina make some players take pay cuts instead of restructuring cause the cap is so tied up in the future?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:20 PM)

Players don't like to take pay cuts.

Randy (New Orleans)

I really believe in this offense happy league, the best defense in NFC South will probably win this division. Can Ryan change culture of Saints defense to get them where they need to be?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:21 PM)

Possible. They just need to be respectable on defense to be a very good team. Still need to add some personnel.

Jeff (VA)

What is the cap situation for Carolina, again? What is your opinion on the restructure of Beason's, D Williams' and Gross' contracts, or releases?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:22 PM)

Before the Florence and Anderson contracts, they were about $4 million under. Haven't seen details of those two deals yet.

CP (Brooklyn, NY)

Chances Abraham returns to ATL?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:23 PM)

I'd say slim. Seems like he's getting some interest on the open market. If they really wanted to keep him, they wouldn't have released him in the first place.

J (SF)

Only the top 51 contracts count toward the cap right? But isn't there a way some veterans' salaries aren't counted completely against the cap even then?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:23 PM)

Top 51 count in the offseason. Yes, there's a veteran minimum benefit that's used on some guys that gives a little bit of a cap break.

Chad (Tampa)

Is this Josh Freeman's last year to prove he is a franchise QB? Thanks Pat!

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:24 PM)

Clearly.

Seth (Missouri)

Should we try to get another CB?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:24 PM)

Who is "we"?

andrew (pa)

what are the chances roy miller comes back? whats the market like for him?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:26 PM)

Think there's a chance he still could come back. Haven't heard his name popping up a lot elsewhere.

Seth (Missouri)

Falcons

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:26 PM)

See what happens with Grimes first.

Nick (Tarboro, NC)

Pat Love these weekly chats there so insightful, Do you see any way the panthers sign Antoine Cason? Thanks for answering

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:27 PM)

They'd have to restructure some contracts, which is possible. He does have the San Diego ties, so maybe.

Joe (Savannah)

Is there any buzz about who the panthers are most interested in? At this time last year the consensus was Kuechly, is there someone out there like that now?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:28 PM)

Sheldon Richardson is the one I've heard most. But it hasn't been as strong a buzz as last year.

CB (Charleston, SC)

What time is the Steven Jackson press conference?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:29 PM)

Think it's either 3 or 3:30. Talked to a Falcons employee right before I got on the chat and he was on the way down there to set up for the press conference.

Tym (Denver, CO)

PY, my guy! What's your gut telling you about a Ronde Barber return?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:29 PM)

Flip a coin.

Hawk (West Virginia)

Pat any word on what the Bucs are planning to do with Blount?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:30 PM)

There have been reports they're shopping him for a trade.

Phil (Atlanta) [via mobile]

I've heard it said that Steven Jackson is "still washed up", Do you think the Falcons made a mistake releasing Turner, or have they possibly become an offense powerhouse in the NFC?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:31 PM)

I think Jackson has more left in the tank than Turner did.

Greg (Tampa)

Do you think any team would trade for Blount considering the Tender Tampa placed on him? Seems high for a 2 down back.

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:32 PM)

They didn't place a tender on him. They signed him to a one-year contract for $1.75 million.

Brad (Davis Island)

Is Barron/Goldson best safety tandem in the NFC South?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:33 PM)

Umm, could be in time. But DeCoud and Moore both made Pro Bowl last season.

michael casner (St. Leo College)

Have you heard about Jeremy Trueblood calling out the Tampa Bay fans? Do you think Tampa Bay has a poor fan base or is he just a big ole dummy?????????????????????????????????????????????????

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:34 PM)

Think he burned some bridges on his way out. Never a good idea for a player to take a shot at fans.

Panthrman (Tampa)

Pat, I notice you keep mentioning "restructuring of contracts". Is there any word (that you know of) on Gross, Beason or Williams' contracts since they carry the biggest portion of the cap as of now?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:34 PM)

As of right now, I'm not aware of any of them taking restructures. But I'll keep checking because I think it's a possibility for all three.

Randy (New Orleans)

Any chance of Saints landing Ed Reed?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:35 PM)

Sounds like Texans are leaders in that clubhouse. Haven't heard anything to suggest Saints have gotten involved.

Mike (New Jersey)

Pat, what do you think it takes to make the Revis to the Bucs trade happen? Jets are playing hardball without much leverage, and I don't think anyone really thinks Tampa will part with 13th pick this year.

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:35 PM)

Think there's a chance Jets get desperate and drop their asking price.

Ken (Tampa) [via mobile]

Is there any news between Bucs and Barber. Staying, going, retiring?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:37 PM)

All quiet so far. Just waiting for the white smoke to appear.

Drew (Charlotte)

Just a thought! Charles "Big Money" Johnson has a huge contract, would it help for him to restructure??

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:38 PM)

Yes, they certainly could restructure him. But the downside to that is they'd just be pushing cap money to next year and they've already got a ton of money tied up for next year.

Ryan (Hattiesburg, MS)

This chat feels a little Bucs heavy..

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:39 PM)

Well, that's to be expected. Bucs are the ones with the cap money and the chance to be players in free agency.

Matt Riddle (Atlanta, GA)

When do we see Ryan get a new contract? Do they take a risk and let him play out his final year like the Ravens did Flacco?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:39 PM)

I honestly think they'll extend him this spring or summer.

Preston (New York)

To give you a break about free agency: with the signing of Goldson, it seems as if the Bucs might be more likely to move back in the draft because Vaccaro need no longer be considered?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:40 PM)

Not sure they were locked in on Vaccaro. Might be some other guys they like at No. 13.

Kenny (Charlotte)

Any word on Tampa trying to find a replacement for Q.Black? Through draft or via FA? Any names being circulated?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:42 PM)

They signed Jonathan Casillas, who may have a chance to start. Think they have high hopes for Goode, who they drafted last year. Still could bring in one more guy to add to competition.

Daniel (Harahan LA)

Do you see the Saints signing a pass rusher in free agency or waiting too address it at the draft?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:42 PM)

Wouldn't be surprised if they signed an FA. Know the cap is tight, but Loomis is good at working the cap.

Pat (New Orleans)

Saints still interested in Asomugha? (sp?) Should they be?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:43 PM)

Has the connection to Ryan. But seems like San Fran may be the leader in that race.

Ty (Nashville)

Pat..you said Keenan Lewis was a "leap of faith" .. How so? He had higher offers from other teams and took a discount to come to the Saints. He has been ranked in the top 20 UFA market in many ranks and has been ranked in the top 5 CB's available by many as well. Low price for a player that has already showed great skill in his first full year of action and was pursued by many?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:45 PM)

Leap of faith in that he's only had one season as a starter. Didn't mean it in a negative way. Meant he has plenty of potential, but don't know if he can do it consistently year after year. Saints obviously think he can.

Jason (Denver)

Any chance Atlanta lands Freeney? Maybe even OSI?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:45 PM)

At least a chance on either one.

Matt Riddle (Atlanta, GA)

Why would the Falcons wait until Spring or Summer to resign Ryan? Couldn't they clear more cap space for FA if the did it now? Thanks

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:46 PM)

Think there's been urgency to get some other things taken care of first.

Tym (Denver, CO)

What are the Bucs' plans for the O-Line? Stay with Zuttah and Dotson at C and RT or upgrade through the draft?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:46 PM)

Wouldn't be surprised if they bring in a RT.

JM (Charlotte)

I have to say Pat, as a Panthers fan, it's frustrating to read about all of these moves all of the other teams are making... and the Panthers can't do nearly as much because of the cap situation...

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:47 PM)

I'm sure it is frustrating. Don't know what to tell you to pick up your spirits other than to say the draft is coming up.

Tony (Colorado)

Where are the Bucs sitting with cap space now that they signed Goldson

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:48 PM)

Still more than $20 million under cap.

DAT Guy (GA)

Jackson is a gamble no doubt in my mind, at his age and over 2,600 carries 16 games then a post season I dont see it?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:48 PM)

Still better than Turner.

Michael (New Orleans)

Should the Saints stick with Lance Moore as Brees' backup? I don't know if he can throw but I bet he can scramble!

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:49 PM)

I'm sure they'll be adding a QB or two.

Peter (maine)

Big matty ice and falcons fan. Why did it seem like the falcons had no interest in DE bennett and seriously what possibly could be they're plan with the pass rush.... i feel like tommy d has an ace up his sleeve

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:49 PM)

I feel the same way, just not sure what the ace is yet.

Alex (Baton Rouge, LA)

ok I never get my questions answered here but still going to try....chances panthers take a chance on tyrann mathieu in 2nd round or in 4th round?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:50 PM)

Think that's a very long shot because Jerry Richardson owns the team.

DAT Guy (GA)

Better than Turner is not the point you consistenlty refer to them as contenders, but they go get a name not a producer anymore.

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:51 PM)

He rushed for 1,000 yards and averaged 4.1 yards per carry behind an offensive line that wasn't great last season.

Jason (Denver)

Someone tell DAT Guy (GA) that if we had Jackson in the championship game we would have went to the BOWL

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:52 PM)

You just told him, Jason.

Steve (Spirit Lake,ID)

Have you heard any news about Harper returning to the Saints?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:53 PM)

I think he's staying. Half his base salary became guaranteed yesterday, unless they restructured his contract and we don't know it yet.

Randy (CT)

Pat! It's all good in ATL...but can you please break it down for me....needs are a CB and a pass rusher - how does this work now with us right up against the cap now

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:54 PM)

Draft one and there's still enough cap wiggle room to sign the other.

Peter (maine)

Hey pat huge matty ice and falcons fan. Why did it seem like the falcons had no interest in who seems like a good young DE in mike bennet? I feel like tommy d has an ace up his sleeve for the pass rush plan

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:55 PM)

Apparently, a lot of other teams viewed Bennett the same way.

Matt Riddle (Atlanta, GA)

Cya next week Pat! Hopefully next week we'll be talking about the Falcons new DE!

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:56 PM)

See you all next week. Thanks for stopping by. Have a great weekend.
