Chat with Rich Cimini

Rich Cimini
  (2:01 PM)

Hello, everyone. Thanks for dropping by. Plenty of stuff to talk about. Hopefully, I can get through this without being sidetracked, as the phone has been blowing up lately. Let's go.

Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)

What NFL Free Agents will the Jets Sign?

Rich Cimini
  (2:02 PM)

They signed RB Mike Goodson, a decent player. Fast. Good pass catching skills. I don't think he's the answer, but he'll provide depth.

IRA (Staten Island)

I think it is a strong possibility they have held some money until they see how the Kolb situation plays out. Thoughts?

Rich Cimini
  (2:02 PM)

I don't think Kolb is gonna break the bank. I can see a one-year deal. That's the market right now.

bob nj [via mobile]

hi rich the jet should hold out for a first and third in a trade for revis agree?

Rich Cimini
  (2:03 PM)

I agree. Anything less would be embarrassing. Keep in mind they'd get a compensatory 3 in 2015 if he walks next yr as a FA.

Geoff (Livingston, NJ)

The Jets lost their top 3 safeties from last year. What free agent safeties could the Jets be targeting? Dawan Landry, Kerry Rhodes, Adrian Wilson, Charles Woodson, etc.

Rich Cimini
  (2:04 PM)

Forget Rhodes. Been there, done that. Woodson, I think, will sign in SF. Wilson might go to NE. Landry is a possibility. Rex likes him.

Bill H (Hoboken)

Hi Rich... in your opinion, wherever Revis winds up, do you ultimately see him getting his $16mm per year? Or do you see him settling for less? It would be tough to watch him play for someone else making $12-$13mm per year. Thanks.

Rich Cimini
  (2:07 PM)

I'd be surprised if he gets 16M, but know this: The Bucs have met his asking price -- unofficially, of course. Wink, wink. The Bucs wouldn't still be involved if there wasn't an "understanding" with the Revis camp regarding a contract. For Revis, it's all about the yearly average, not so much the guarantee.

Bill H (Hoboken)

Hi Rich? I can?t argue with Idzik?s approach so far, particularly with the terrible cap situation he inherited. But with the way the defense has been stripped, and minimal efforts have been made to retain guys like Keller, do you think these moves are geared more towards 2014 - possibly with a new head coach ? and Rex is just around b/c Woody does not want to eat $$? Or is the situation really just that dire, giving Idzik not many options, and Woody really does have faith in Rex as a HC? Thanks!

Rich Cimini
  (2:09 PM)

Lucky day, Bill. You get two questions in a row. Yeah, totally looking at 2014. I'm not surprised any of these guys left. I thought DeVito was 50-50. Turns out it was less than that. I think they should've kept Keller, still a solid player. This is a total strip down, building for the future.

Harry (Babylon, NY)

Rich - I heard an observation made on one of the morning radio shows that made a lot of sense. The 49ers & Seahawks look like they will be able to able talent and depth over the next couple of years because they do not have to commit so many $$ to their QB. Do you think John Idzik looks at rebuilding the Jets in the same manner?

Rich Cimini
  (2:12 PM)

Excellent point, Harry. The 49ers kept Kaepernick on the cheap for 1 more yr, Sea gets Wilson for 2 more. Then they'll pay big. The Jets won't have to pay a QB big money for at least 3 yrs -- assuming Sanchez is gone in 14 and they draft a big-time QB this year (big if)... btw, Danny Woodhead just signed with SD.

Alex (Anaheim)

Is there substance to the Kolb rumors? Would he be an upgrade at all?

Rich Cimini
  (2:13 PM)

Substance, yes. Upgrade? That I'm not sure about. He knows Mornhinweg's system, so he'd have a "leg up" on Sanchez, to use a recent quote.

Jay (Fairfax, VA)

I heard Mike Lombardi a while back comment that Keller was a liability because he couldn't block, to the point where teams knew it was a passing down when he was in the game. Wouldn't they be better off with a more balanced TE?

Rich Cimini
  (2:14 PM)

Cumberland isn't much better as a blocker. In case you couldn't tell, Lombardi hates the Jets.

Dexter (PDX)

Given Idzik's penchant for building through the draft, odds that Jets take a 2014 1st rounder from TB and use it and their 1st rounder to guarantee they get one of the many good QBs in next year's draft (i.e. Bridgewater, Manziel, Murray)?

Rich Cimini
  (2:14 PM)

Very possible, Dexter. Very possible.

Mike (Brooklyn)

Rich you talk about how it was a bad move to let Keller go but you forget they can get equal to greater value for cheaper in the draft. One of the top 3 TE will fall to the Jets in the 2nd. Most Likley Ertz or Reed both of whom have a better skill set hen Keller

Rich Cimini
  (2:16 PM)

You're right, I'm just saying the price wasn't crazy, especially on a 1 yr deal. A good scheme fit with Mornhinweg.

Mark (SV)

It's been a rough couple of days for Jets fans! How will the Jets replace guys like Landry, Keller and Diveto?

Rich Cimini
  (2:28 PM)

Cumberland will be the TE, plus they will sign or draft another. Coples steps into DeVito's spot. Still haven't replaced Landry. Send suggestions to John Idzik.

Eric (San Diego, CA)

Rich,What are the Jets hoping for in holding on to Tebow? A conditional 7th round pick?

Rich Cimini
  (2:28 PM)

If they're lucky.

Anthony (Long Island)

Is Idzik trying to employ some sort of football version of "Moneyball?"

Rich Cimini
  (2:29 PM)

Good question. Sure seems like it. Does that make him Brad Pitt?

Mike (Newark)

If they knew they had to do this major rebuild then it seems silly for the Jets to have kept Rex Ryan. He is a lame duck coach with no shot if there ever was one. What did they keep him ? And any contact with him as to what he is feeling ?

Rich Cimini
  (2:30 PM)

He won't be happy when/if they trade Revis, I can tell you that much. Woody likes Rex's leadership skills, ability as a defensive coach. Plus he owes him about $7 mil

Mark (San Diego)

What do you see as your primary role as a beat writer for a sports team? Is it to provide accurate information or to provide opinion and commentary?

Rich Cimini
  (2:31 PM)

Actually, both. When I write a news story, like Keller signing with Miami, it's all about information. When I write a column or a blog post, it's opinion and analysis.

Greg (Phoenix)

Rich, we should probably call John Idzik the anti-Tannenbaum. No big contracts for anyone. Have you gotten any word as to their draft strategy? Will they try to accumulate a bundle of picks to improve depth?

Rich Cimini
  (2:32 PM)

Good call, Greg. It's the anti-Mike approach. Yes, they will stockpile draft picks. Plenty of holes to fill.

Anthony (Long Island)

From a marketing POV if/when Revis goes, who becomes the face of the franchise? I don't see fans running to the store to buy Goodson jerseys.

Rich Cimini
  (2:33 PM)

Ha! Great question. Maybe Wilkerson. Maybe the No. 9 pick. What will Woody do? No one to market!

kman (NYC)

Rich,I have been a Jet fan for 40 years. This is so depressing. What is Idzik clearing cap space for? Do you think he will spend the money? (My only solace as a sports fan comes from the fact that my Hoyas have a chance to humiliate Syracuse three times in one month!)

Rich Cimini
  (2:34 PM)

Whoa, easy with the Cuse reference. Payback tonight! Idzik is building flexibility for the future, no doubt. He's thinking long terms.

Rich Cimini
  (2:35 PM)

Idzik is waiting out the market and he'll strike when he finds value.

Rich Cimini
  (2:35 PM)

Idzik is waiting out the market and he'll strike when he finds value.

Brian S. (Westchester)

What are you impressions so far of John Idzik ? Seems like a quiet, not flashy, build through the draft guy. Probably the best for Jets?

Rich Cimini
  (2:38 PM)

Agents tell me he's a smart, tough negotiator.

James (Syracuse, NY )

Hey Rich, great work as always. It's clear the Jets are in rebuilding mode: cutting contracts, shopping Revis, remaining (for the most part) cautious during free agency, not re-signing Keller or DeVito. Do you think it's something Woody is okay with or something Idzik had to talk him into?

Rich Cimini
  (2:39 PM)

Woody is on board. I'm sure they're in agreement.

David (Myrtle Beach)

Rich, any updates on OLB Antwan Barnes?

Rich Cimini
  (2:39 PM)

Sorry, I don't, I've been sidetracked with other stuff. I know Rex likes him a lot.

Brett (CT)

RICH!!! SAVE US!!! Give me something I can smile about with the Jets???

Rich Cimini
  (2:40 PM)

The Jets announced today that ticket prices will stay the same. Are you smiling now?

Kyle (Nj)

Rich, you can't be serious that the jet braintrust actually thinks Cumberland can start in this league. Also, how are they going to address the loss of pouha and devito?

Rich Cimini
  (2:41 PM)

Coples will get some of DeVito's work, but they're shy on interior LM. Counting a lot of Ellis, which may be a risk.

Andrew (Portland, ME)

How close is Tampa Bay getting Revis and signing him long term. Could a deal be done very soon.

Rich Cimini
  (2:41 PM)

A contract wouldn't take long. Hard part is getting the teams to agree to trade compensation.

Brian (New York, NY)

Rich,The JETS are driving me absolutely crazy with this Revis saga. Do you feel that if nothing happens from say RIGHT NOW to the conclusion of the owner's meeting then it's safe to say "Revis Island" will not be in Pewter & Red? I know some analysts say this could come down to draft day, but I think our JETS would rather have these extra picks locked up and planned for way before the draft is upon us!

Rich Cimini
  (2:42 PM)

I don't see anything happening until the draft. The NFL is a deadline business. That's when things happen.

Brian Grey (Woodbridge, VA)

Hey Rich, love your articles. Question: With everyone well aware of the Jets' interest in Kolb, will that hurt is in negotiations? Also, where are we as far as LB Butler is concerned?

Rich Cimini
  (2:43 PM)

Kolb isn't going to have a big market. As for Butler, I haven't heard anything at all, just rumors.

Ralph (Da Bronx)

Should the J-E-T-S make a run at Ed Reed? Thanks...

Rich Cimini
  (2:44 PM)

Ha! That's a good one.

Matt (North Jersey)

Do you agree with anything Idzik is doing? Signing bad players to big contracts (Mike Goodson - 3 years 6.9 Million) and letting players we need like Keller go? Honestly the moves this guy is making are inexplicable....

Rich Cimini
  (2:45 PM)

Had a scout from another team tell me $6.9M was too much. I haven't seen the breakdown yet, so I don't know how much is guaranteed.

Rich Cimini
  (2:46 PM)

Sorry to cut it short, folks, but things are pretty hectic in the Cimini war room. Thanks for the great questions. We'll talk next week. Rich
