Chat with Andy Katz

Deven (New York, NY)

Harvard shocked the world yesterday! How did they do it?

Andy Katz
  (11:01 AM)

They were composed, made shots and New Mexico showed no sign of having any kind of offensive flow.

Mike (CA)

Growing up in Colorado, I've followed the WAC/Mt West for decades. It's hard to look at the conference among the top tier of basketball conferences as they want to be viewed when they lay an egg every year in the tournament. Any thoughts on what the problem is?

Andy Katz
  (11:03 AM)

I am a huge believer in the MWC. The quality of play during the regular season is high level. But the conference has to look at itself and deal with the NCAA tournament failures.

Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)

Who do you think will be the 2012-2013 NCAA Men's College Basketball National Champions?

Andy Katz
  (11:05 AM)

I'm still sticking with my pick of Louisville.

Jarrod (Virginia)

Mr. Prez right hand man, what was more impressive to you, the total domination by VCU and CUSE, or Harvard taking down a potential final 4 team, i'm going with Harvard, and who can be that team today?

Andy Katz
  (11:07 AM)

The VCU and Syracuse demolition were the most impressive performances. Not close.

Frank (New Orleans)

Was yesterday's loss to the Oregon Ducks the final game of Marcus Smart's brief and eventful career at Oklahoma St.?

Andy Katz
  (11:11 AM)

Not sure. This is a weak draft. So I won't be surprised. He is a top five talent in this draft.

Frank (New Orleans)

Should Gonzaga be worried about their performance vs. Southern or are they a much better team than the one we saw last night?

Andy Katz
  (11:12 AM)

Only if the Zags let it cost them a round of 32 loss.

Nick ((Wisconsin))

What are chances of UK going 40-0 next season with or without wiggins.

Andy Katz
  (11:12 AM)

Slim. That's just too much pressure and shouldn't be put on this team.

Kevin (Albuquerque, NM)

Andy,Even with an early Lobo loss that most of everyone didn't see coming, how do you think our boys did this season compared to the rest of the country and how do you think we're looking for next season?

Andy Katz
  (11:13 AM)

They were not supposed to win the MWC regular-season and conference tournament title. Job well done.

David (New York)

A few thoughts on how Syracuse and Cal match up?

Andy Katz
  (11:13 AM)

Cal can't rebound as well as Syracuse. The crowd won't win this game. Remember, Syracuse won at Arkansas, a much tougher environment. Syracuse should win.

Gregory (Virginia)

Andy, With what happened yesterday in the West, the Buckeyes have to be the solid favorite to reach the Final Four, what says you?

Andy Katz
  (11:14 AM)

It's one day. Can't judge this bracket yet for Ohio State -- which hasn't played yet!

mike (detroit)

Michigan State has trouble with athletic teams. Is Memphis a really bad match-up for the Spartans?

Andy Katz
  (11:20 AM)

No. The Tigers haven't been able to knock off a team of this caliber during the season yet. So I would definitely favor Michigan State.

Frank (Del Papa)

What do you think of the Pac-12 performance yesterday (3-0) in tourney?

Andy Katz
  (11:21 AM)

Strong. But it is also about matchups. Whether it is fair or not conferences do get judged by the NCAA tournament.

Jon (NYC)

Andy, does this mean people can finally stop trying to say that the MWC comes close to ACC, BE and B1G?

Andy Katz
  (11:22 AM)

No. If the Big Ten doesn't get a team in the Final Four are we going to say the Big Ten wasn't as good as it was this year? Should we say if Louisville, Gonzaga, Miami and Kansas made the Final Four that the Big Ten was overrated?

Katelyn (Syracuse, NY)

Syracuse finally got everything working at the same time. They are a dominant team when they don't settle for threes all game, but rather pass and drive. Will they keep that up or revert back to shooting to quickly?

Andy Katz
  (11:24 AM)

If they stick with the plan like they did against Montana they could beat anyone remaining in the bracket.

Nick (Boston)

Hi Andy, after last night could you see Harvard beating Arizona?

Andy Katz
  (11:25 AM)

Could I? Yes. Would I predict it? No. This is still a very young team that lacks the inside prowess.

GBK (Lincoln Park)

Andy, Michigan hasn't faced a team that pressures like VCU all year, but they have 3-4 guys that can handle the ball and don't generally turn the ball over. How do you think they fare tomorrow?

Andy Katz
  (11:25 AM)

I picked VCU to be different. But you're right. Michigan can handle the pressure. This game will be won on second shots on the boards.

Steven (Dubuque)

People are contending Davidson 'blue' it against Marquette (pun intended). But they made all their free throws down the stretch and had one turnover that proved costly. Shouldn't we praise Marquette more and blame Davidson less?

Andy Katz
  (11:26 AM)

Yes. You should. It was a terrific effort by Davidson. It was one play. This is what happens in the NCAAs.

Kenny (Oregon)

Is Oregon's victory yesterday the most over hyped 12-5 upset in history? Since the Ducks shouldn't be a 12 seed

Andy Katz
  (11:27 AM)

Yes. Made NO SENSE that Oregon was a 12. None. If Oregon beat Oklahoma State in a non-conference game in February nobody would have flinched.

Tony (Richmond, CA)

Does the NCAA committee have a sick sense of humor pairing UNC and Kansas two years in a row? Do you think the fans get the 3rd round machup they're hoping for?

Andy Katz
  (11:28 AM)

They consistently say they don't look beyond the first round.

Ethan (Starke, Fl)

True or False: If Florida can figure out how to finish out close games, they will win the NCAA Tournament.

Andy Katz
  (11:30 AM)

Pretty close.

Shawn (Pittsburgh)

Does Jamie Dixon take the USC job? If so, where does Pitt go?

Andy Katz
  (11:36 AM)

I will still be surprised if he does. I am not saying he won't. I will be surprised if he does go. He has a great relationship with his president and AD.

Andy Katz
  (11:37 AM)
