Chat with James Walker

James Walker
  (4:00 PM)

Welcome to our latest AFC East. Things are busy with free agency and the draft upcoming. Let's discuss.

Teddy (Miami, FL)

Is Miami any better now than they were last month?

James Walker
  (4:01 PM)

Absolutely, Teddy. The Dolphins were not nearly as explosive or athletic as they are now. They got faster at WR, TE and LB. Most importantly, I think Ryan Tannehill will be better in Year 2. His growth will make the Dolphins better overall.

Austin to the Bills with Spiller. It literally spells D-Y-N-O-M-I-T-E

James Walker
  (4:03 PM)

That would be explosive, Trane. But at No. 8 overall, that would be a classic case of over-reaching. Austin is good football player. He will make someone's team better. But Austin is not a top-10 pick. However, Buffalo has been heavily scouting Austin's teammate: Geno Smith.

Kelly (NY)

What was Buffalo thinking getting rid of Fitz? He may not be the future, but he is better than anything out there. Why the sudden release?

James Walker
  (4:05 PM)

It came down to finances and performance, Kelly. Ryan Fitzpatrick was due a $3 million roster bonus and $7.45 million in salary next season. Everyone knows he's not worth that kind of money. The team tried to get Fitzpatrick to restructure but couldn't find a resolution in time.

Alex (Boston)

Hey James, I'm a Jets fan living Boston. Any good news on the horizon?

James Walker
  (4:06 PM)

Sorry to say, Alex, but this year is going to be a sledding for you. Get ready for a long, hard rebuild.

Mike Ho (Hong Kong)

Was letting Long get away at that price the right move for the Dolphins?

James Walker
  (4:07 PM)

Yes, Mike. The Dolphins were willing to re-sign Jake Long but at their team-friendly price. They know Long better than anyone and was fully aware that he is a player on the decline. You don't pay for the player Long once was. You pay for the player he is and will be.

Steve (Mongolia)

After the Patriots, which team in the AFC East has the best quarterback. (I wouldn't say good, but just better than the rest.)

James Walker
  (4:09 PM)

Ryan Tannehill is now the clear No. 2. It's not Tarvaris Jackson or Mark Sanchez. Both QBs are below average. Tannehill can make all the throws and will only get better.

Murph (San Diego)

Will Buffalo move up in the draft to get Geno Smith? If not, who is another player at pick #8 that is a possibility in B-lo?

James Walker
  (4:11 PM)

I'm on record saying I wouldn't take any of these QBs in the top 10 this year. However, teams are desperate and I think someone will take the plunge. It could be Buffalo at No. 8 if Geno Smith is there. But I doubt the Bills would trade up to get Smith. They don't have many picks this year to trade them away.

Chris (Cape Cod)

James, I must say I like what Idzik is doing - getting a bunch of potential upside (with injury risk, yes) at very low cost. Now if he can bring in a TE, WR, and S on same principle and get a 1 and a 2 for Revis I like how things look heading into the draft.

James Walker
  (4:12 PM)

John Idzik has no choice but to shop for bargain-basement players. The Jets have a lot of holes to fill and little cap room. Some of these signings are going to work out and others will be what we expected. But the Jets have a long way to go.

Ronnie (Lynbrook)

James,With the Patriots most likely going to take the East, Do you feel the dolphins have a shot at atleast a Wild Card Birth?

James Walker
  (4:14 PM)

It's too early to make predictions, Ronnie. But the Patriots have been the safe prediction for more than a decade. I think Miami has a chance to challenge for a playoff spot. But let's wait and see how the rest of the offseason plays out.

Tim Kingston NY. [via mobile]

who should Miami draft with the 12 pick this yr...biggest need?

James Walker
  (4:16 PM)

Miami's biggest needs now are CB and LT. The tricky part is I'm not sure there are prospects at No. 12 at those positions.

nick black (kansas city)

Any chance the phins make a move for Revis? Maybe trade a few draft pics?

James Walker
  (4:16 PM)

The Jets do silly things, but they are not that dumb. They will not trade Darrelle Revis in the division so Revis can haunt them twice a year.

j (andover ma)

the patriots should put amendola at wide and draft austin for slot

James Walker
  (4:18 PM)

That's a pretty small WR group, J. Tavon Austin is a good player but I don't think he will last to No. 29.

maurice (buffalo,ny)

should the bills consider trading back to get more draft picks

James Walker
  (4:19 PM)

That will definitely be a consideration, Maurice, especially since the Bills aren't doing anything in free agency. Buffalo still has some holes to fill and could use the extra draft picks.

Rob (Cleveland)

With a glaring hole at CB, do you think it's in the realm of possibility the Dolphins trading up to get Milliner?

James Walker
  (4:21 PM)

With 11 total picks, it's definitely possible, Rob. I actually like that for Miami. It would fill a big hole and the Dolphins still have plenty of picks.

O'Sullivan (Ireland)

How many years will it be for one team in the AFC East, other than the Patriots, to win the division?

James Walker
  (4:22 PM)

We only take our predictions year to year, O'Sullivan. The NFL ebbs and flows too much to go beyond that. Right now, the Patriots are still the favorites. But Miami is making some moves to catch up.

Ron (Peoria IL)

Does it make sense for Buffalo to trade back in the first round to get extra picks? Especially to a team that like Geno?

James Walker
  (4:23 PM)

The Bills need a QB as bad or worse than any other team. I don't see them trading out of No. 8 to let someone get QB Geno Smith.

Brian (New Jersey)

True or FalseWes Welker has a career day versus his former team.

James Walker
  (4:24 PM)

Welker is going to a different system, Brian. I'm not sure Welker is going to be a 100-catch WR with Peyton Manning in Denver's system. That remains to be seen. Welker was the focal point in New England. He may be the No. 2 or No. 3 read for the Broncos.

Dennis (Denver)

Are people in the NE area still crying about the Broncos signing Welker?

James Walker
  (4:27 PM)

Many Patriots fans are not happy, Dennis. That's especially the case since Wes Welker didn't crack the bank in Denver. It's a lot of he said, he said on what happened. But now it's time to move on. The Patriots have Danny Amendola, who is younger but has durability concerns.

rick (buffaly, ny)

Hey James whats up with the Bills doing relatively nothing in free agency? the dolphins are improving and as you always remind us NE will take the division. So why is the bills front office doing nothing.

James Walker
  (4:28 PM)

The Bills can't be major players every year, Rick. Remember that Buffalo was last year's version of Miami last year with signings like Mario Williams for $100 million. The Bills are taking a different approach. They are not overspending to get players.

Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)

Where do you think that Ryan Fitzpatrick will play since he has been cut by the Buffalo Bills?

James Walker
  (4:31 PM)

Ryan Fitzpatrick signed to be the backup with the Tennessee Titans. He will be behind Jake Locker, who may not be the long-term solution.

James Walker
  (4:31 PM)

Ryan Fitzpatrick signed to be the backup with the Tennessee Titans. He will be behind Jake Locker, who may not be the long-term solution.

Derik [via mobile]

I'm wondering what the Jets are going to do at running back? Does the front office really believe that McKnight or Powell can be a successful starter in this league?

James Walker
  (4:33 PM)

It's an issue for the Jets. Right now Powell and Goodson will make the roster. But neither are guys who can carry the ball 20-25 times a game. I think the draft is a strong possibility.

jon (lynchburg, virginia)

Do you think the Dolphins shoud have not replaced burnette, and dansby. but kept the cash to sign sean smith, bush and maybe welker?

James Walker
  (4:35 PM)

I'm ok with the move. The Dolphins got faster and more athletic. Miami felt Dansby and Burnett were more tacklers than playmakers. Plus, LB was going to be a need in 2014 because of bloated contracts. The Dolphins fixed all these issues now.

Brian (New Jersey)

Is Kolb really an upgrade over Sanchez?

James Walker
  (4:37 PM)

Both QBs are not long-term solutions. But the thought would be that competition makes both better. The Jets would go with the best guy.

drake (toronto,on)

can we get more bills games in toronto

James Walker
  (4:40 PM)

That's a good one. But I doubt Drake is a Bills fan.

Liam (Dublin, Ireland)

Any word on Julian Edelman? I hope the pats resign him, he showed some good sparks last season before injury.

James Walker
  (4:41 PM)

I do think Edelman could be a bargain in free agency. The guy is a terror on special teams and was showing improvement as a WR. But the Patriots have other needs than another slot WR right now.

Michael (Fort Lauderdale, Florida)

How do you think the Dolphins should spend the remainder of their cap money?

James Walker
  (4:44 PM)

Miami needs to find a CB for sure. I don't think Richard Marshall or Dimitri Patterson are capable of being a No. 1 CB. The Dolphins are could use another pass-rusher to go with Cameron Wake.

Cal (Virgina)

Who would you rather build your team around? Peyton Manning or Tom Brady?

James Walker
  (4:45 PM)

I've always been a Brady-over-Manning guy. The playoffs matter most for great QBs. Brady's playoff record vs. Manning's playoff record is not even close.

Cordy (Pullman, WA)

Is the running back position strong enough right now? I had hoped that Reggie Bush would return. I still think he's a versatile threat. I also think Thomas seems prone to injury. Also, do you think Miami will make a play for Eric Winston to help address Long's depature?

James Walker
  (4:47 PM)

The Dolphins are taking a risk on Lamar Miller, but it's a calculated risk. Miller showed a lot of good things last year. He has a good vision and quickness. I think Miller fits the WC offense well.

Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)

Do you think that Notre Dame LB Mante Te'o will be a Perfect fit for the Bills?

James Walker
  (4:51 PM)

That's not going to happen, Chris.

Katelyn (Syracuse, NY)

I know we need to upgrade the QB position, but when we do that QB is going to have no one to throw the ball to. Any ideas on who Buffalo might be looking to catch passes this coming season?

James Walker
  (4:52 PM)

The WR market is not deep in the draftr or free agency this year, Katelyn. The Bills have one good WR in Steve Johnson. They also still have high hopes for T.J. Graham. I expect the Bills to draft another WR to add to the mix.

darthneo (germany)

Do you really think Tebow will be in the league this year?

James Walker
  (4:54 PM)

Tim Tebow is good enough to play in the NFL if he changes positions. He has the size and strength to add to a team. However, if Tebow wants to stay at QB, he is reducing his chances of continuing his NFL career.

Keith! [via mobile]

Do u think miami signs any solid corners or safeties? Or rather fill need thru the draft?

James Walker
  (4:55 PM)

The Dolphins re-signed safety Chris Clemons. So I don't think safety is a huge need. I do expect the Dolphins to continue looking at CBs.

SB58 (California)

Who will be the surprise team in the AFC East this year??? and why??

James Walker
  (4:56 PM)

The Dolphins are my sleeper pick this year. So that's my pick to surprise.

Jason (San Diego)

Who else does NE pick up from FA

James Walker
  (4:57 PM)

I wouldn't rule out Emmanuel Sanders just yet. The Patriots haven't made an offer, but WR is still a huge need. It's still a possibility.

Mike (Portland, Me)

Why are the Pats not trying to gain some leadership in the secondary with guys like Reed and Woodson still out there?

James Walker
  (4:59 PM)

The Patriots signed Adrian Wilson, who is a veteran leader and former Pro Bowler. That's why they chose to go after. Wilson was more affordable than Reed and Woodson, as well.

James Walker
  (5:00 PM)

Everyone, thanks again for your time. Remember to keep reading the AFC East blog for all the latest updates and analysis.
