Why did we wait till 12 years to take the "tuck rule" out the game?
That does seem like a long time, doesn't it?
How does Miami handle the void left by Jake Long at LT? Eric Winston is currently spending the day at the facilities, but would it be a better option to use their extra 2nd round pick to trade for Branden Albert? I don't think Jonathan Martin can handle the left side in the NFL.
Winston would be a quality signing either way and if an OL only has one weak area it is much easier to scheme to help that player-Martin at LT in this case. But Martin really wasn't all that impressive on the right side as a rook and while there are obvious questions if he is qualified for LT, I think there is also questions if he is truly a starter period. Plus, Winston is a much better run blocker than in protection. So you bring up good points. Albert for one of those 2s seems like a great move for MIA too.
We all know that winning in free agency doesn't always equate to winning on the field (See last year's Eagles). That being said, what is the outlook for Miami this year? Playoff possibility?
I am not nearly as high on MIA's offseason as everyone else apparently. I LOVE that they surrounded their Franchise QB with weapons-which too many teams neglect to do. But, MIA has spent a ton of money & they do have a wealth of draft picks, but they still need at least one OT (see above question), a pass rusher and I think they need two CBs...those are all the hard to find positions!
Can Kansas City get a solid ILB in the draft in the middle rounds? Who do you like? Or, is there a good free agent still available? Thanks...
There are plenty of options for KC in the 4thish round or free agency for a ILB to play next to D Johnson. But that guy is only going to be a 2 down player anyways-so I wouldn't dedicate a lot of resources to that spot. KC has done very well this offseason (see my Monday Insider article about it), but one thing they lack is an interior pass rusher.
Do the Patriots have the worst receiver corps in the AFC East? (NFL?)
Right this minute they do, but too early to judge that right now
Gus Bradley was really talking up Geno Smith,is this just an attempt to raise Smith's value in hopes of someone trading up, or is there a little fire behind that smokescreen?
Now is officially the time of year when we should believe nothing that comes out of NFL camps...but JAX certainly needs a QB!!
Like the lions offseason so far? Bigger draft need OL or DE?
Had very few expectations for DET's offseason, but they have way surpassed my expectations and have done very well. Those are equal needs, but if Fisher or Joekel is there, DET MUST pounce. Otherwise, there should be a wealth of DEs to pick from in Round 1. What impressed me most though about the Lions' offseason was what they did with their secondary.
THe Browns had a good first day or two, but seemed to have slowed the momentum. Any word on Grimes or a TE. Both are still pretty big needs for this team.
I am very high on J Cameron and this is a very deep and intriguing TE draft, so I don't think that is ultra pressing right now. A CB would certainly be nice, but again, they will have MANY good ones to pick from in the draft. No reaso to be hasty now for CLEV
Are the Rams now a 2 TE offense with Jared Cook?
Of course they will utilize some 2 TE sets, but I don't think we see a lot more of it than in the past. I think they see Cook as everything they wanted Kendricks to be.
Have heard that Robert Mathis will flip to the right side this season. Is this a move you like and what if any thing will Mathis have to do differently to be successful?(other than he now would be facing a LT)
In that D (think Baltimore) their edge DE/OLBs are different types. One is a big time pass rusher and the other (J Johnson/Upshaw) is a run defender first. Of course a guy like Suggs did/does both really well, but you get the general idea. Well, last year Mathis was the run D guy with Freeney as the pass rush guy, which sort of short changed Mathis. But with Freeney gone, Mathis should be better suited for the new role.
What did you think of Jarius Wright in the limited amount of time he got with the Vikings? Is he a capable option of filling in the slot for Harvin?
No one will make up for Harvin, who is just a very special player. But I do like Wright and I think Harvin's departure opens up a great opportunity for Wright to get more playing time in a semi-similar role.
Where do you think A Winfield ends up and can he still help a team?
He can def still help a team and played very well last year-both as an outside guy and also as a superb slot CB. I would think a contending team would be the most likely to pursue him now. But what team comes to mind? None are jumping out at me right now.
Matt:Don't you think the Lions should pick OT with the 5th pick opposed to CB, depending on who is left at the time? Would love to see them solidify that OL since Backus retired. Your thoughts?
Semi answered this before. OT is a huge need and they should def grab Joekel or Fisher, but I don't see another OT prospect worthy of that high of a pick. Otherwise, go DE
Thoughts on the Colts O-line pick ups? I know they didn't upgrade to a great line but are they now at least middle of the pack, and should they be able to run the ball at least good enough to make teams respect the play fake?
Certainly much better OL than a year ago-no disputing that. Thought they spent an awful lot on Cherilus, esp with so many other OTs available at the time, but I really liked the Thomas siging. The Colts might have had the worst OGs in football last year!
Where do you see Vollmer landing? Thanks...
This is amongst the biggest shocks in free agency to me. I think he is the best RT in football. Do the Pats move on with Svitek and Cannon? I could see that, but why aren't more teams all over Vollmer? His back? His price tag?
matt, do you see brady's arm getting weaker it seem his long ball in not there anymore.
Agreed...that happens. But great QBs like Brady and Manning compensate in other ways. He can stil get it downfield, but I do think his arm ability overall has declined.
How do my Steelers stay a top defense this year?
Must improve the edge pass rush-and not sure how that will happen unless they find a true stud OLB in the draft. But LeBeau is still there and they will be exceptionally well coached, which certainly helps. But I see what you are saying!
Will the Colts give the texans a challange this year
I feel like HOUS is going backwards and INDY is going forward with their roster building. But I will still take HOUS most likely.
Doesn't Winfield make a lot of sense for the 49ers? Are you surprised they haven't tried to sure up their secondary more aggressively?
They have been linked to a lot of DBs, so maybe a big move there is still on the horizon. I love Winfield to SF. Tough and nasty, which is right up their alley. Could be a good counter move to SEA's addition of Harvin too.
I have the pats taking Robert woods in the 1st round who do you have them taking.
I don't dislike Woods, but I also don't think he is worth a first round pick.
Matt you heard it first here the Pats will never win another super bowl with Brady at qb.
Might be right, as he prob will only be in the league another three years or so...and winning the Super Bowl is rather difficult.
Is Matt Schaub really the answer at QB for the Texans?
I don't think so. Needs to be surrounded by an exceptional supporting cast. You could do worse of course, but drafting a high upside QB in the 2nd or 3rd round would be a great move.
Are you really not going to be on Football Today anymore?!?!
Sounds that way!
Did Rashard get a bum deal in the Burgh with that crap OL from the last few years?
In some ways yes, but he was far from impressive in his own right. However, he was returning from a very serious injury and just because A Peterson excelled in a similar situation, that doesn't mean that just anyone should be able to do the same.
It would be a coup for the Texans to draft EJ Manuel then????
Yes, but I bet he isn't there for HOUS' 2nd round pick
Do you think the Chargers are going to sign Danario Alexander? He helped save a few games last season and they need WR talent.
Yeah, it shocks me that they haven't already. Really played well for them. But his knees are a huge issue apparently...and this is a new regime that isn't directly familar with DA
Redskins signed EJ Biggers today. Give me the run down on him. Good pickup?
Ideally a 3rd CB. Hasn't played poorly, but is going to consistently struggle against higher end WRs-and is a guy you look to help in coverage. But WASH sure needs DB help!
Fluker to the Bears? Also Trestman mentioned Hester isn't a WR anymore...bout time somebody says it.
Is about time someone says it about Hester. Fluker? Maybe, but Webb and Bushrod are now a pretty solid pair at OT and Carimi might eventually be a RT as well. Fluker could play OG and might be best there, but I now see LB as CHI's biggest need.
What about the OT from Oklahoma ? Is he worthy of a top 10-15 pick
Lane Johnson. Yes, but not Top 5. Will be in high demand when the top two OTs very quickly fall off the board.
gut feeling what the Vikings will do with their 2 1st round picks?
One still needs to be a WR like Allen or Hopkins. The other can pretty much be best D player available, which is a nice situation to be in.
Best fit for the Broncos, Dumervil, Freeney, another FA, or a rookie?
They are in win-now mode, as they should be, so I am not saying a rookie. I guess Freeney, but prefer him indoors.
If you're the Cowboys and Warmack and Cooper are off the board at 18 do you go DL or safety ala Vaccaro or Richardson?
A DT like Richardson would be fantastic and there should be others that are attractive-like Short perhaps. I would say Safety is a slightly bigger need, but there should be very good Safetys available in Round 2 as well, so Vaccaro is the only one I would consider there.
buying low, (ie getting good players undervalued because they were on a bad team ie Titans nabbing 3 ex-Bills), a good strategy or no?
Not sure that is what happened though for TENN. They spent a TON on Levitre. I do think you nailed it with G Wilson though, who is an upgrade and didn't break the bank.
Are you still high on Ponder?
Less so for sure. So streaky. But also extremely young and I would give him this year to prove himself.
What should the Bolts do with Gaither? Release him or keep him and protect themselves by taking Johnson in the draft.
If they can get Johnson, they have to do that. Gaither is SO difficult to count on. I would consider giving him a one year deal...a prove it type deal.
Can you see the Patriots running the 2 TE set next year with Gronk and Ballard, and using Hernandez as more of a WR?
And of course they could always grab yet another TE knowing them! That could happen I suppose-esp if that is how they get their best players on the field.
Does Manti T'eo get drafted in the 1st round?
Bears and Ravens look like fits to me, so I say YES
How surprised are you that Greg Jennings went to Minnesota, given their QB situation?
It got to the point that Minny really had no choice but to land Jennings. Just imagine if they didn't! So I think they overspent
Are the days of the Bungles in the past? They the new mediocre game one playoff bounce? Or they a couple years of drafts and experience away from playing into Feb?
They entered free agency with a TON of cap room...but what have they done to improve? I don't get it at all. The Steelers and Ravens are getting hit hard in free agency and CIN just sits back complacent. So...that is Bungle-ish to me
Could the Cowboys benefit from Michael Turner's services? DeMarco Murray is injury-prone.
Murray is very injury prone, but Turner has little to no value
If healthy, who plays on running/passing downs between Clemons, Bennet, Irvin and Avril?
Irvin will be just a passing downs player and in sub packages I think we see Irvin and two of the others to go along with someone like Bryant or Mebane...or maybe all four in a NASCAR type deal. Bennett is by far the best vs. the run, but overall, I see a GREAT rotation
what could minnesota get if they traded away gerhardt?
6th round pick maybe...if someone happened to be interested
what do you think about Jake Long to the Rams?
It is all about health with Long. Not just his ability to stay on the field, but can he move like he once did?
Matty- hows it hanging? If Sanders leaves , Tavon Austin in the first round?
Seeing Haley's history, I see a big WR like Hopkins or Allen as the better fit-even if Sanders is still there. I see one of those WRs in round 1 or best D player available
Has Peyton Hillis garned any attention yet?
I doubt it
Will Urlacher be a Bear next year? If not, where does he go?
Betting he stays...but CHI better draft LBs in a big way
How big of an upgrade is Stephen Jackson to Michael Turner?
Jackson isn't what he once was, but this is a sugnificant upgrade as a runner, but esp as a receiver and a RB that can play every down.
Do you see Ahmad Bradshaw as a fit in GB?
Or Pittsburgh or Cincy...but needs to pass the physical with that foot
Who do you have in YOUR top 3 power rankings?
Hmmm....1. SEA 2. SF...then a gap...3. DEN
Dolphins a playoff team in 2013?
The AFC is so weak, maybe. But I would bet NO right now. Draft should help them a lot though.
To the folks questioning New England's wide receivers: what matters on NE is pass catchers. Gronk, Hernandez, Amendola are arguably the top pass-catching trio in AFC East. Patriots do need to upgrade but I don't think it's dire.
Adding Sanders would be a very good move for a late 3rd round pick. Then WR in round 1 maybe and another free agent (Den Alexander?)
With Burleson and Broyles coming off serious injuries do the Lions dare take a Wr with one of its higher picks?
Maybe look for a bargain UFA WR instead
Steelers a playoff team in 2013?
Not feeling it
Given the current situation with Revis, what would you hold out for if you were the Jets?
Well, the key there is that Rex is on the hot seat-so why does he want picks in the 2014 draft?
How much fun are the SEA/SF games going to be this year? Gives me goosebumps and it's only March!
Oh I hear ya! Surpassing BALT/PGH for NFL's best rivalry!
If Barry Sanders = Regular Coke, does Reggie Bush = Coke Zero?
Hmmm...perhaps. The beauty of Bush is his ability to line up anywhere as a receiver though-and I think DET uses those skills much better than MIA did. But he ran well for the Phins overall.
Will James Harrison swallow his pride and resign with Pittsburgh? Let's Go Pens!!
Our Pens are on FIRE!!! Is Harrison even welcomed back?
y u no answer my questions :(
Which young star QB is most likely to regress in 2013, RG3, Luck, Kaepernick, or Wilson? I vote Wilson.
RG3, esp because of the injury. But, while I think he is a great passer, so many of his throws were extremly short or off play action (which works so well) to very open guys.
While it is subject to change with the draft and more FA moves. Who do you have as your six playoff teams in the weak AFC?
Yikes...Dunno...SO weak. Don't hold me to this, but I will reluctantly go with DEN, HOUS, BALT, NE, CIN, KC
Wilson is a young Drew Brees: agree or disagree?
Redskins haven't done much during free agency. What gives?
No cash flow Bro
With a secondary of Talib, Dennard, Wilson, McCourty, Arrington where does NE rank in NFL?
Middle of the road. McCourty is a star in the making. Talib is a clear #1 CB. Arrington is good in the slot. Wilson is very average in coverage, but will help in other ways.
Isaac in Missouri, personal foul and game ejection for whining to the chat host. There's no crying in football chat. bring it stronger next time.
Fine work Ed. Always have my back.
Will Andy Reid use his star running back in KC more effectively than he did Shady or will Charles be relegated to 12 carries and 4 catches every game?
Contrary to popular belief, Reid did get a LOT of production from Shady and Westbrook if you recall
Was Russell Wilson the steal of last years draft?
Oh yeah...by far
Ill take middle of the road after the last few years! :)
No question. But a key is upgrading the pass rush, esp from the interior. C Jones being healthy all year would sure help. But could also see them grabbing someone like J Abraham
Will this year show Bradford is a huge bust now that he has a left tackle to block for him?
Huge make or break year for Bradford...no more excuses
are the pats superbowl bound?
They sure seem to get there with regularity. Right now I am picking the Broncos, but I see those two as the top AFC teams by a pretty wide margin now.
Was Munchak serious about Shonn Greene - has he watched any film the past 2 years?
That is an excellent question. Why run out so early in free agency for that guy? If he is still floating around on the cheap later in the process, fine...but yuck
What do you think of A.J. Jenkins? cut him?
Strong breakout candidate for 2013
How many games do the Ravens win next year?
They are not going away and I am sure Ozzie will continue to improve that roster. 10?
Hi Matt, greetings from small Singapore, what's your most surprise free agent still in the market now beside Vollmer?
Guess I will go with Grimes...is that all about his health? Hard to get good info on that one.
I think robert ayers will have a big year so no need for dumervile ayers is a more of a everydown guy... what do you think
I like Ayers and he is more of an every down guy, but one more older specialist pass rusher sure would be appealing
Folks, that is a wrap for me. I gotta run. Fun stuff!
