Let's get this chat going ...
If ur the head coach whats your starting five
Felton, Shumpert, Melo, Martin and Chandler.
Will Carmelo Anthony retire ask as knick?
Who knows? When free agency hits for superstars, it's wide open. I still think in the back of his mind, Melo would love to team up with one of his close friends, Chris Paul, eventually -- just like LeBron and D-Wade, close friends, wanted to and did.
I don't like the knicks. They give me Headaches.Headaches-Josh from Drake and Josh!
A lot of headaches this season, but fortunately Melo said he's "pain free," Shumpert's knee pop was nothing serious and Chandler is very soon to return. The core of the team should be in tact pretty soon, but, of course, still missing Amar'e. With about a month to go in the season, getting that core back is key.
Which NCAA College Basketball Players that are Playing in the NCAA Tournament do you think will be a perfect fit for the Knicks?
A guy like Shane Larkin, a young, explosive point guard who could serve as a backup.
Jared, why does everyone hate me?
Hate is a strong word. Frustrated may be the better one. Get healthy, my friend!
Any news on us picking up Delonte West?
Not right now, but if the Knicks were to pick up anyone, he's the guy to me.
When Chandler returns, what do you think Woodson is leaning on doing to the starting lineup. Stay small with Prig, Felton, Shump, Melo, Chandler, or go traditional with Felton, Shump, Melo, Martin and Chandler. Basically should Prig or Martin keep continue to start?
He hasn't said which way he's leaning, but as I said before, I like Felton, Shumpert, Melo, Martin and Chandler. Martin and Chandler's defensive intensity and toughness is contagious. Together, they're a solid frontcourt anchor. I think the only disadvantage with that lineup is not having two point guards in the backcourt. I liked Felton-Kidd to start the season and Prigioni-Felton recently. They can create more plays offensively, but if Shumpert continues to improve getting into the paint and making plays -- and consistently hits that 3-point shot -- that would be a big boost for the Knicks. To me, Shumpert is the X-factor for his potential offensive and defensive abilities. Defense is where he needs to be the most effective, of course.
What are the chances the knicks get back Amare, Kurt and Sheed by the start of the playoffs?
I doubt it.
Hey Jared, do you think this veteran-heavy roster is the direction for the franchise for years to come? Or if this season isn't successful, will they swing back?
Well, guys like Kidd and Camby are signed long-term. But the Knicks do need to get younger in certain places. You'll see some moves in the offseason.
If Knicks decide to add another player - who would be the most likely to be cut? White, Sheed or Kurt?
I would guess White. Woodson seems committed to his old-school bigs. But if it's determined in the next week or so that Sheed and Thomas' recovery will need more time, perhaps one of them gets cut. We'll see. Currently the Knicks are standing pat with their roster.
Should the Knicks make a move for Greg Oden? If healthy, could really help them for 10 min a game.
I don't think so. Oden is a huge gamble, which is why he's still not playing in the league this season.
will mike woodson be coach next year?
Do you expect the Knicks to hold onto the Atlantic title?
I think so. If Melo is really pain free and Chandler is very close to returning, as I said, the Knicks' core will be back and healthy. Their defense has been really solid lately, which is a huge positive, so with Melo and Chandler back, their offense will greatly improve. They should be solid on both ends of the floor, and their veteran leadership should kick in and lead to consistent play, and wins.
Jared, big fan of the chats. I think it is absolutely mandatory Knicks get both games against Toronto and enter next week on a high note, otherwise (except the Charlotte game), we may have to wait till April 5 (Milwaukee) for a victory. Thoughts?
Absolutely. Every game at this point needs to be treated like Game 7 of the Finals to me. The Atlantic Division race is too close and the Knicks can't afford any more letdowns. If they're talking championship, that's what it takes.
do you think knicks will get chris paul next year the way felton is playing
No. Financially, no room.
Seems Felton can't handle opposing PGs. His defense is absolutely terrible...would you give Pablo more minutes?
He does struggle, but Shumpert should see more of those matchups looking ahead. The key is the reduction of switches. The Knicks tend to over-do them.
Any news on Delonte West?
Do you think the Knicks are putting too much risk in hoping for Sheed and Kurt to get healthy for the playoffs? Roster spots seem so valuable at this time of year given the Knicks injury-plagued season. I think Henry Sims could fill a need and would be valuable off the bench if injuries continue to pile up.
Because the big man field is so desolate, the Knicks are not rushing. But they'll evaluate this week and see where they stand. A move could happen.
Do you see Copeland back next season as a knick? I get the feeling that Woody doesnt like his game much.
Hard to say at this point, but I do think he'll be playing in the NBA somewhere. He's proven that he belongs. He could be a sixth man on another team for his instant offense.
Jared, who do you have in your Final Four bracket?
Miami is all I care about because I'm from there. It's an amazing scenario because the school, which is about five minutes from my house, has always been a football one. Jim Larranga has done a fantastic job down there.
Love the chats, Jared. Question on playoff clinching. Why does ESPN say the Nets clinched with the Philly loss but not the Knicks? The Knicks own the head-to-head tiebreaker over Philly (3-1), which is the 1st tiebreaker. Nets have the better division record than Philly, which is the 2nd tiebreaker. Philly can be no better than tied with the Knicks and Nets.
The Knicks have the tie-breaker over Philly, but they don't have it over Toronto. The Knicks need a win or a Raptors loss to clinch.
Hey jared, sorry for a dupe, but what makes tysons bulging disk different than amares, as far as time off?
It's likely less severe. The Knicks won't reveal those details and we'll never be able to talk to the actual doctor, so I couldn't tell you. But it seems to be a degree of injury.
Do you think the knicks will add a big man to the roster like Henry Sims to boost there defensive front line.
At this point, no moves are imminent, but the Knicks are monitoring different players. Samardo Samuels and Henry Sims have both been tearing up the D-League, and they're both young and healthy, which is nice. But, as we all know, Woodson prefers the vets.
Which playoff Match up do you want to see the knicks face in the first round? I think Knick vs nets would add a lot of energy to the city?
I think the Nets in the first round because it would feel like a Finals environment. The Knicks should embrace it and believe if they can make it out of that round, they would feel like they've been through a big stage already and they'd have great momentum in their favor. The one team I'd avoid is the Celtics. They seem to always have the Knicks' number.
Is Tyson Chandler and DPOY contender?
Yes. I think, though, LeBron could get it this year. He was close last year. Or Chris Paul.
What's up Jared, do you see the knicks releasing james white and picking up a delonte west? or do they hold on to White to guard players such as lebron and durant? might need him for short stretches in the playoffs. thanks
At this point, as I've been saying in this chat, that's hard to say right now. I believe Woodson is committed to Sheed and Thomas because he likes the old-school bigs, but if either one of their recovery timetables is longer than expected, perhaps one of them gets cut. Woodson has to figure that Sheed or Thomas could still both be around the team as like a voice from the sidelines. That's how Sheed has been helping.
do you think melo was serious when he said "ill never be back to 100%"?
No one in the league at this point is feeling 100 percent. You'll never hear about all the tendonitis guys are feeling around the league. Many injuries go under the radar.
Do you think that the Knicks can potentially beat Miami if there was a Chris Andersen or Chris Bosh injury?
I really don't see any team beating Miami. The Knicks will have to shoot close to 50 percent from downtown in four games to beat them. That was their weapon in two wins this season against them, but could they shoot that well in a playoff series? That's the big question.
Do you think Carmelo's FG% will go up during the playoffs, if players like Steve Novak and JR Smith off the bench can become even more elite 3 point threats?
A lot of it depends on the perimeter penetration from the team's guards. He needs more open catch-and-shoot opportunities, especially in transition. The offense needs to come easier to him.
do you remember anyone since jordan playing as good as lebron has been playing?
There's a guy named Kobe Bryant who's had some pretty special runs of his own.
On a scale of1-100, chances Knicks make it to eastern conference finals?
looking back: did the knicks make the right move to amnesty billups?
Getting Tyson Chandler was huge. A game-changer. He's the Knicks' MVP.
How do the Knicks get away with being so secretive with injuries? It seems quite simple, Woodson is not a doctor, so he should not be publicly setting timetables, even as vague as "day to day". Why not make Dr. Callahan available? Shouldn't the league step in and remedy this?
LOL a lot of teams get away with being secretive. It's not just the Knicks. Even the players themselves hide stuff. They want that money!
Why doesn't woodson run novak off of screens to get him open looks from 3? It seems like he just stands behind the arc and hopes that he's open when he gets the ball. He should do the same for shumpert so he can be isolated and dribble drive
We've seen that at times this season -- when Melo doesn't play -- and there needs to more of it for him and other players, especially on the weak side. I'd like to see more flare screens, down screens, double screens, pick and pops, pick and rolls featuring Melo to put more pressure on the defense and create more open looks, etc. Things like that.
Do you think that the Knicks have a chance in beating Miami in the Conference Finals if Rasheed Wallace and Kurt Thomas are fully healthy, and if Steve Novak can contribute more?
It comes down to 3-point shooting. The Knicks have a strong defensive team in place, but can they light it up from downtown, which they did in two wins over the Heat this season?
Do you think Copeland will get minutes even though Melo is back
He'll get some, sure. Reduced, though. He's still a defensive liability.
should Woodson consider starting jr smith?
I like a Felton, Shumpert, Melo, Martin and Chandler starting five. Smith is the sixth man; that won't change. Even with the recent injuries, Smith could have started, but Woodson still used him off the bench. Smith, however, has started some third quarters.
Do you think the Knicks can get the 2 seed and win the Atlantic
Yes, I do. I commented on this earlier in the chat.
Knicks started off with great ball movement and D in 18-5 start. Why did they stop? Doesn't common sense tell them this is the key to success and to continue doing it? Too much stagnant offense, ball sticks, D isn't the same. Mind boggling.
Some defenses adjusted well to their 3-point shooting, some of the Knicks' injuries took a toll, they didn't adjust well to more physical defense, their consistency dropped off, etc. Those are just some of the things.
Do you think Copeland has convinced Woodson to be a permanent part of the rotation in think he is much needed offense of the bench with Stat out?
As I said earlier, I think Copeland will play, but his minutes will be reduced some with Melo back and then Chandler returning. Cope is still a liability defensively.
Any word on why White went from starting to completely out of the rotation when Chandler got hurt?
Melo returned and he's just the odd man out on the team.
Jared, who's the most interesting man in the world: J.R. Smith or Marshall Henderson?
Do you think the Knicks could beat the bulls if they play them in the first round
Will Derrick Rose be back? That's the question.
Will the Knicks resign Rasheed Wallace, JR Smith, and Prigioni in the offseason?
I have no idea. These kinds of questions are unanswerable right now.
Do you think Kidd, Sheed, KT and/or Camby will retire this summer?
Well, Kidd is signed for a couple more years; same with Camby. In addition, Thomas said the other day he would like to play again. I'm not sure how Sheed feels.
as head coach of this team what would you look to change first?
Solidify a starting five and then my rotations, especially to make sure the second unit is protected defensively, and then I'd go from there.
If Rasheed Wallace can come back and play the way he was before he was injured, do you think that the Knicks have a solid chance in beating the Heat. I think that in a 7 game series as long as Melo, and role players like Kidd, Smith, and Novak can be consistent that the Knicks can win.
As I said, the Knicks' 3-point shooting needs to be lights out against the Heat. Sheed could help in that area, as well as defensively. But he's still a ways away. Not only does he need to get out of his boot first, which is not close to happening, but then he needs to get back into NBA game shape. Remember how long it took him before the season? Longer than anticipated.
What's the deal with the "pop" and scar-tissue. Is that normal after surgery? Will Woodson keep Shump back to 20 minutes or under to prevent further aggravation?
That's a good question on the minutes. It's something we'll likely ask Woodson in the days ahead. But as far as the scar issue, I've heard that's not unusual.
which team would the knicks have a better chance at beating the playoffs, Bulls or Celtics?
Celtics without Rondo. If D-Rose returns, watch out. The Bulls, to me, are better defensively already. D-Rose adds toughness and obviously a ridiculous offensive game.
Since Knicks are not doing well since the hot start, which I beleive correlates to the ability of an older team to maintain that kind of production of the course of an entire season, do you consider the old veteran experiment a fail? If Knicks run with this team again next season, I think all vets should be on a minute restriction all season long. Thoughts?
Well, if you look at the injury transactions, the Knicks are not in the top 10 this season. I wouldn't say it's a fail right now. The Knicks' core will be in tact soon. Amar'e is the biggest loss.
Jared, why does the NY media seem so bias towards the Knicks? is it because of their hate for James Dolan? I feel like the Nets and espically Darren Williams get a pass. While at the same time they hammer the Knicks and espically Melo.
I don't get into that bias stuff, but I see what you're saying. I report what I see and hear, and try to be truthful. Obviously covering a pro team is not always black or white.
Can you explain to me Marc Steins power rankings? How can the Lakers ( 4 games above 500) be 7 slots higher than the knicks?
That's one writer's opinion; it's not a compilation of multiple people. Don't read so much into it.
Looking ahead to the draft could the Knicks actually go the PF/C way? It seems it's getting tougher to add a solid, youngish piece in the frontcourt through free agency or waivers and Camby and Chandler could be great mentors for a project (Lucas Nogueira perhaps?)
They could give a hard look at Henry Sims during the summer. I could see him playing on the Knicks' summer league team. Allan Houston likes him. But, yes, overall I do think the Knicks need some younger blood in the frontcourt, as well as the backcourt.
Jared are you ready to lace 'em up if woodson gets really desperate?
LOL I'm ready to go! Put me in coach!
When the Knicks play small, why isn't Carmelo used almost exclusively out of the post? I understand his quickness advantage against 4's but this team's biggest issue offensively is relying on the 3 point shot and having him hoist them makes the issue worse. Why not play inside out with him drawing double teams and passing out or scoring when he isnt' doubled?
I'd argue that he's been used out of the post quite a bit this season, more so than past seasons. The Knicks have gone small plenty, and Melo is occasionally on the block.
who should the knicks look to trade for this summer if they not make the second round?
The Knicks don't have much trade bait. I expect more FA signings.
which free agents should the knicks go after this summer if they get bounced in the first round?
I'm not sure yet because the Knicks' core is in tact. I'll start digging through this stuff later in the season. Stay tuned!
