Greetings Fight Freaks and welcome to the weekly chat. FNF is back tonight and tomrrow we've got Abraham-Stieglitz 2 on Epix in an otherwise slow weekend but there's still plenty to discuss with some big fights coming up and the whole HBO/Showtime stuff making for interesting conversation. So check out all the news stories, features and blogs for the week and let's get to it.
DTM, Bradley said in his interview that he thought he had a concussion from the first round on. Did a doctor check on him between rounds and if so should he have been cleared to continue fighting? Bradley did earn a lot of respect though by that epic display of intestinal fortitude.
Doctors dont check between rounds unless there is a specific reason. So he was not checked. Bradley showed huge stones in the fight and all the heart in the world.
It?s pretty obvious that JCC Jr. going to move up sooner rather than later. Any chance they put him in with Carl Froch?
You never know but I highly doubt it.
Lots of Floyd coming up the next 2 months!
This is true. Showtime and CBS have a boatload of stuff they will air surrounding the fight.
Three words to sum up Bradley vs.Provodnikov.. " OH MY GAWDDDDDDD!"
Is it fair that the IBF are not allowing Kubrat Pulev to defend his EBU title without losing his ranking as their #1 heavyweight contender? He shouldn't need to wait around for the winner of Fury-Cunningham. If Fury wins, he may decide to not fight him anyway, so Kubrat will have had a long wait for nothing.
That's the rule. Has nothing to do with the European title. If you are in a No.1 position or set for an eliminator in the IBF and you fight without getting an exception, you are deemed unavailable. Everyone knows the rules.
Is there any truth to the rumor that Deontay Wilder will be fighting Tony Thompson next?
That's a fight Golden Boy's Richard Schaefer told me he would like to make but I dont think it's anything on the verge of being made. It would be a major step up for Wilder.
hi mr DAN any news on CELESTINO CABALLERO fighting soon thanks
He is supposed to fight April 20 vs. Robinson Castellanos in Panama.
Any info on what is next for yuriorkis gamboa?
Nothing specific but he is likely to be in a fight on HBO this summer.
Mr. Rafael. Chances of having boxing on CBS on saturday primetime???
I could see it happening in the summer months when the primetime lineup is in reruns but more likely you will see more boxing on CBS on weekend afternoons.
Last week you questioned Provodnikov's power. Do you feel different about it now?
No. He's a decent puncher, but no monster.
Hey Dan given a boxing show like Jim Lampley's fight game, is their a chance he would be allowed to bring up a topic like the Golden Boy-Showtime vs HBO-Top Rank Feud and would he still be allowed to interview Golden Boy's boxers and their top guys like De La Hoya and Richard Schaefer?
He discussed it last show. My understanding is that Lampley has editorial control over the show.
D$, so if Broner comes to the BBQ this year...are we all in danger of being his next meal?
Pay the man, Shirley!!
Whats ur thoughts of amir khan getting such any easy road to title shot while judah, garcia, maltyesse and petterson have to go through tougher fighters?
Khan has no guaranteed title shot coming his way but he brings money and attention and that carries special privledge.
Has anybody at Golden Boy confirmed ticket sales for the Canelo Trout fight to you?
They announced yesterday that they have sold over 30,000 tickets for that show.
Hey Dan, HBO should have used a garbage truck instead of a semi truck because that intro is just garbage.
So is broner moving to showtime or to top rank?
Schaefer said he has a longterm contract with Broner, which means he wont be on HBO. Likely to be on Showtime.
Part of Shotime's planned May-Day events include airing fights that were originally on HBO PPV. How does this work? Do all rights to those fights stay with Golden Boy / Mayweather promotions?
They have non-exclusive rights, meaning Golden Boy has library rights to the fights it promotes but just cant use the HBO announcers. But it has the international broadcast rights, so when you see a fight like Mayweather-Oscar you will hear the broadcasters who called the fight on fight night for the rest of the world besides the US.
Did 50 snag a bigger fight for Dirrell? Any speculation for the April fallout?
I am told it is some sort of "personal" problem. Dirrell has nothing else lined up right now.
Here's my story on two ESPN2 cards falling apart in April, including the one with Dirrell: http://espn.go.com/boxing/story/_/id/9084410/andre-dirrell-martin-quintero-bow-respective-april-friday-night-fights
Hey Dan, what's your take on Arum throwing Provodnikov in the mix with Pacquio, Marquez, Rios, Alvarado and Bradley?
Arum is not his promoter. His promoter is Artie Peullulo but obviously Provodnikov fits in with any of those guys. I'd love to see him fight the winner -- and maybe even the loser -- of next week's Rios-Alvarado rematch.
D$ any word on Angulo? Still back this spring?
With Lamps calling the Rios/Alvarado fight is a prime indicator that it should not have been a BAD telecast in the first place.
Is Jermain Taylor still on the comeback trail or did he retire?
He has not announced his retirement, but he also has no fight scheduled.
Can juan the baby bull diaz make some noise or even become champion again at 135?
Who knows? Let's see how he looks in his comeback fight.
Danimal, what are the chances that Canelo and Floyd, if both win, fight on Mexican Independence day weekend? If Floyd doesn't fight Canelo, do you think he would fight on Sept. 15?
It's possible but I tend to doubt it comes off.
Im tired of Dirrell Dan. Make em go away
He has gone away. He is not fighting.
For the record, I am doing this chat but also paying attention to Duke's NCAA game!
DTM, Bradley mentioning he thought he got a concussion was the first time I've heard a concussion brought up after a fight, but I've gotta believe they occur fairly frequently in fights and its just skimmed over/accepted as part of the culture, right? Or am I way off?
They happen, obviously.
Bat phone, hold up.
I'm back. Richard Schaefer called and said he made a deal and that the much-discussed Peterson-Matthysse fight is set and will be on May 18 in the main event in Atlantic City on Showtime. Alexander-Brook is the co-feature. That is a GREAT doubleheader.
Was there ever any talk of putting Alvarez vs Trout on CBS?
Glad to hear that Peterson-Matthysse is in AC, not DC - no offense, of course. Just thinking about it from a "no one can cry hometown decision" perspective.
Exactly. I cant blame Matthysse for wanting be somewhere other than DC since his only losses were split decisions in the other guy's hometown.
Dan, Just wanted to make an official announcement. I just started a promotions company and have signed Joel Julio as my star!
Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, the Love Child.
Do you know anything about the alleged "street fight" between Canelo and Solis?
Only what I have written about before.
Regarding HBO's announcement that they will no longer work with GBP, do you think they would have made such an official statement if Bradley-Provo hadn't been such a great fight?
I dont think one has anything to do with the other whatsoever.
Peterson V Matthysse is gonna be a war
Agreed. I cant see how this is not a great fight.
DTM, Any thoughts if Golden Boy and Top Rank will ever work with one one another instead of making the fan base lose interest. I think they are doing more harm than good.
Ever? That's a long time. But for the forseeable future forget about it.
Matthysse is one of my favorite fighters but I'm getting married on May 18th....I don't see a way out of this one. Any suggestions?
Have the wedding in the afternoon.
Has anyone in the Mayweather camp spoken about Bey's suspension? They always talking so loud about PED's but nothing since one of their own got busted.
Not that I am aware of but Floyd and his team are not responsible for Mickey Bey. Mickey Bey is responsible for himself.
Dan, I'm DC all the way but also a huge Matthyse fan; it's going to be tough to pick a man to root for. Guess I'll just have to cheer for the fight in all it's thuggish glory.
So what do you make of the talk that Broner is still "Mr. HBO"? Is it just empty talk or will he try to get out of his deal to stay at HBO?
I suspect his heart is with HBO but his checks will be at Showtime.
Will fighters leave GB to get back on HBO? I'm thinking about Peter Quillen. How long can he be happy not fighting Chavez Jr, Martinez, GGG or Ward?
I think as long as fighters are being paid and getting opportunities they dont personally care who shows the fight.
i think peterson v matthysse is now my favourite fight on the sked
I think I agree with you!
DANimal! If Abraham goes through Stieglitz tomorrow, what do you think his immediate future - as far as top-tier opponents - hold for him?
If Abraham looks good the door is open for him for a bigger fight. But I can also see him staying in Germany and fighting solid but not great opponents and filling up arenas and making money like he did for the years when he held a middleweight belt. The other top guys at 168 -- Ward and Froch for example -- have already beaten him EASILY.
Is Golden boy making more room for the Canelo Trout Bout? How many do you think will be there the night of the fight?
The Alamodome is massive and it can be expanded from what it is set for to add seats.
What a surprise Dan? Andre Dirrell is not fighting.
Does HBO no longer buying GBP essentially mean that TR will no longer do Showtime?
Yes. But Top Rank hasnt been welcome at Showtime in a year anyway so this is nothing new.
Peterson v. Matthysse is sweet, but if I had to pick one fight to go to, Rios v. Avalardo all day.
Both great fights.
Why wouldn't HBO still leave the door open to negotiations with GB? They must have really pissed HBO off.
Any clue what Maidana's next fight is?
He faces Josesito Lopez on June 8 in Carson, Calif., on Showtime.
Dan, does Victor Ortiz want to continue as a fighter? It seems like he's busy doing other gigs besides boxing.
Victor is doing Dancing with the Stars because he is not allowed to fight yet while his badly broken jaw continues to heal.
hey dan the man. Your take on the whole Golden Boy HBO fiasco?Does it hurt HBO or Golden Boy more?
There are downsides for both companies. For HBO, it gives up the prospect of putting on numerous top fighters since Golden Boy has the best overall stable in all of boxing. So that is a major negative. You cant claim to have the best fights as a network when you dont have access to a couple of dozen of the best fighters. But for Golden Boy it means you now have to squeeze all your guys onto one network that does not have an unlimited budget or calendar of dates, so it could get tricky.
Dan, Ortiz on Dancing with the Starts pales in comparison to Broner on Dancing with the Strippers.
How many fights are televised by Epix tomorrow? Just Helenius and Abraham/Stieglitz?
Correct, two fights
whos your pick for tomorrows fight dan. Abraham or Stieglitz?
I lean to Abraham but I am expecting another pretty darn good fight.
Any news on Paul Williams? Not his condition, but his attitude and temperment. How is he dealing with life and recovery almost a year later?
By all accounts, including in his own interviews, he is very positive and working hard in therapy to everything he can do to improve as much as he can even though the doctors have said he is unlikely to walk again. But he has that fighting spirit.
Any word on the April 20th undercard? I heard a few weeks back that Omar Figueroa might fight for a title on the card????
Figueroa is supposed to be on the card, but he's not ready to fight for a world title so dont expect that level of a fight.
Dan, what do you heard about the new middle weight prospect -Zurdo Ramirez- that TOP TANK just signed?
Strong puncher, action style. I look forward to seeing him on UniMas in a few weeks.
Dan, I really enjoyed the premier of "Cornered". I thought Michael Buffer did well. Who knew he had such a great sense of humor?
I did because when you meet and get to know him you quickly realize he has a great sense of humor.
King D, lots of cries about Pianeta as Wlads next foe, but is it true that most everybody in the top 10 turned down the fight? If so, whats a Champ to do....sit on his titles?
Klitschko has fought basically everyone so I dont blame him for taking Pianeta. It's not like there is some mega fight out there he's ducking and plenty of guys have turned him down anyway.
Hey DTM, are you aware there is a pretty exciting fighter on Friday Night Fights tonight! Looking forward to seeing Donovan George let his fists fly at 160.
Yeah we have a very good fight tonight between Don George and David Lopez. They are both aggressive guys and I think we could have a really good fight on our hands. This one is definitely worth checking out.
Dan have you talked to anyone at EPIX to see if they are willing to up the budget for some of the displaced GB fighters? I have a feeling they could get some really nice fights for a good price if they want to start looking at weight classes besides Heavy.
Not specifically, but like everyone Epix is aware of what is going on. I'm quite certain if the right fighters/fights presented themselves Epix would have the conversation with Golden Boy.
Poor Jim Lampley, the Fight Game will now have even more slideshow presentations of Showtime coverage.
Big dog! Just read JCC jr said he's not afraid of Golovkin and would gladly fight him for his belt. Assuming for a second arum allows that to happen who do u see winning? Would be a very violent affair I imagine
That would be a good action fight for sure. I would think Golovkin might be a little too much for him but who knows? I say bring it on.
Hi Dan, I was very impressed with Bradley's heart and grit last weekend, but while not downplaying Provo's awesome effort, was Bradley "exposed" a little as someone who might not have the chin and defense to bank with guys above 140? Ruslan's obviously a tough guy, but he was a 140lb guy who doesn't have crazy power. Is Bradley better served sticking to 140?
Bradley went in with an attitude of wanting to slug it out and we got a great fight. Getting knocked down is part of the sport if you get hit. He's been down before (like twice vs. Kendall Holt) and I am quite sure he will be down again. But he always gets up. He is not going back to 140. That makes no sense. He carries 147 well, is in great shape and has a world title and possible opponents to fight.
If I had a nickel for everytime someone asked about the feud between GB and TR, I would have enough money to start my own promotional company
Dan, I have noticed several old Oscar De La Hoya Fights shown on Fuel TV. Is there any business between GBP and FOX to show boxing?? ven though this channel is almost MMA channel.
GB has a deal with Fox, which shows their Mexico cards on Fox Deportes as well as regular smaller US cards on Fox Sports Net and Fox Deportes as well as library fights. And the new and old fights are replayed on Fuel.
Dan, we went and watched Marroquin last Saturday night, I encourage all freaks to go to a live card. It was awesome and we took a guy that wasn't a fight fan and he had a blast. It was a packed house and might have had more there than the Bradley fight.
Good to hear. Nothing like going to the live fights.
With the HBO/GB split do you think HBO will go all out now to put the Pacquiao PPV head-to-head with Floyd in Sept? Pac/JMM will crush Floyd/anybody not named Canelo IMO.
There is no chance that they would go on the same night. Wont happen.
Are you concerned about Tim Bradley's health after that fight? He just didnt look right during the post fight interview
He'll be ok. Just needs a break for now. Obviously, the interview was rough because he had just finished a really tough fight.
Did that Bradley fight make a Pacquiao rematch a much more attractive option?
Here's my feature on Saturday's Abraham-Stieglitz rematch: http://espn.go.com/boxing/story/_/id/9083300/arthur-abraham-aiming-higher-robert-stieglitz-rematch
Why all the Klitshcko criticism from the freaks??? Pianneta is an undefeated young heavyweight with potential, I'm looking forward to it. Would the freaks prefer Vlad fight Kevin Johnson or David Price right now?
When you are on top there will always be those who are critical.
Hey Dan...I know you said it'll be GBP on Showtime and everyone else on HBO. Is there anything that would prevent another company (DK, Main Events) from doing Showtime? Or is it just an expectation that GBP will fill up all the time and money on Showtime?
If Showtime wanted to put on a card from another promoter and I am quite sure it could if it wanted to. But it has not shown any interest in doing so.
What are your thoughts on Deontay Wilder? Do you feel that he is a legit contender for a wolrd belt?
He's not a contender yet because he has faced nobody of remote consequence. That said, he is a top notch heavyweight prospect with tremendous punching power. Just needs rounds and experience and a step up in competition.
At the Marroquin fight, every time there was a knockdown the crowd would go crazy and it was loud, I can't imagine what it was like when Chavez knocked down Martinez. Was that the loudest you have ever heard at a fight?
The moment Chavez dropped Martinez might be the single loudest and most insane I have ever heard inside an arena for a fight. It is one of the most incredible moments -- maybe the MOST incredible moment --- I have ever felt in my career at a fight.
Dan my girl had tears watching Bradley fight. Said she was scared for em but proud of em at the same time. I told her Im proud of her lol
So do you think Bradley's fight with Provodnikov was good or bad for his career? I went on Facebook and forums, and such, and people were still really hating on Bradley, saying the fight was another robbery. Bradley took so much punishment in the ring and fought like a warrior for a decision, yet still people disrespect him. What does the kid have to do at this point?
It was good for his career. I thought he deserved the close decision. However you had it was close and no robbery. This was not a decision like the Pacquiao fight. But Tim made a great fight. What more can you ask for?
Rios/alverado II will it be better than the 1st?The 1st fight was a throwback fight like watching Gatti/Ward.
It will be hard to live up to the first fight. Sometimes they do -- Vazquez-Marquez 2, for example. Sometimes they dont -- Gatti-Ward 2, for example.
Hey Dan, just wondering if you've seen much of Billy Joe Saunders? Think he can break into that top trio of British Middleweights?
I've seen several of his fights. Good prospect.
Bradley is Holyfield of this era. Amazing heart
Great heart but not the chin like Evander.
Dan, Its good to see George Groves staying active, any chance he fights for a world title anytime soon?
His promoter said he will be in a big fight in September and he is a WBO No. 1 contender so if he wins his two fights before then -- Saturday and May 25 -- I dont think a world title fight is too far away.
Please tell me that the Mayweather prison documentary will show him arguing with the guards about only drinking bottled water.
Pay the man, Shirley!
Pay the man, Shirley!
Weights from Germany: Stieglitz 167.6, Abraham 168, Helenius 238.8, Sprott 243.2
With HBO and ESPN's new agreement, any chance HBO influences ESPN's coverage of boxing on Sho?
Any talk of a Bradley vs Provodnikov rematch? If not I'd love to see Provodnikov versus Khan, would probably be a better version of Khan vs Maidana.
No real talk of an immediate rematch. I wouldnt be surprised if there was one down the road but not right away.
Where do you think Migeul Cotto will end up? He's not technically a Golden Boy fighter. Do you think he will return to HBO?
Cotto is working with GB and likely would be on Showtime or Showtime PPV for his next fight later this year.
We can all agree that Showtime has increased their budget for boxing within the last year or so. From what I see, HBO making a statement that they will no longer air GB fights forces the heads at Showtime to decide whether they will further increase their budget in the coming year or so. What are your thoughts
I agree. HBO's decision sort of dares Showtime to spend even more money. Think about it like this - you gotta figure Broner is going to fight at least twice more this year and BHop once more. Those were fights that probably would have been on HBO and now will be discussed at Showtime. If Showtime adds them to what it's already doing that's another probably $8 million in license fees for the three fights. So hard decisions will have to be made by Showtime and GB.
How are the secondary promoters (Shaw, Goosen, Main Events) handling the GB/TR battle? Are they generally picking sides? Do they feel they have more leverage in their own negotiations and are all for the continued stalemate?
For those guys, the can do fights with either company fairly easily. So it doesnt really make a difference to them.
Dan, I've been waiting all year to score tix to Mayweather's fight on May 4 but when I signed on to ticketmaster right on time, resellers and third parties already had every lower priced ticket. Any advice on how to grab tix? Flight and hotel already booked. It's a shame if I have to watch in closed circuit or something. Thanks in advance
I wish I had a good answer for you but I dont. I dont know what is up with the ticket situation but I know it's usually tough for a normal person to just log on and buy a ticket for a major fight.
how psyched are u about covering a fight at radio city?? Plus its a compelling match up for Nonito.
I'm looking forward to it. I've covered fights at a variety of venues in NY -- such as MSG, the MSG Theater, Barclays Center, Yankee Stadium, Javits Center, Hammerstein Ballroom -- but it is always nice to add a new one to the list.
Top Rank/HBO=WWF & Golden Boy/Showtime=WCW or is it vice versa? LOL
We are not normal we are fight freaks!
Why would HBO go public with its decision? Why not just freeze GB out of a few cards and get back to the negotiating table in private? Going public just hardens their position, weakens their negotiating stance and makes subscribers (like me) question whether to stay with them.
That is the one question I have thought about. I do not know why they went public. And when going public they didnt send out a press release or anything. They contacted a handful of boxing media. I have thought of possible reasons and heard various theories but I do not know why they made it public.
DTM, here's the dangerous question...because HBO won't deal with GB, does this also basically say they have cut ties and all communications with Al Haymon?
Not entirely. HBO did not single out Haymon in its announcement but by not doing fight with Golden Boy it is de facto cutting him out since almost all of his fighters are with Golden Boy. One exception, for the time being, is Chris Arreola. His next fight is on HBO on April 27, although that fight was contracted before the announcement HBO was cutting ties with GB. But Chris is not with Golden Boy. Point is, if Al has a fighter HBO is interested in and that fight is not with Golden Boy I would imagine HBO would consider putting him on.
Fact or Fiction, Dan: Paulie and Broner is a done deal already? I read conflicting reports everywhere!
The fight has been agreed to but the particulars are being worked out.
I can confirm that HBO has agreed to stop working with us because they refused to put a 40x40 poster of my face in every room in their offices.
Bryant Jennings v. Franklin Lawrence on 6/14? What can you tel us about Lawrence?
That fight was agreed to the other day. Lawrence is an up and comer also but has not really been tested. Seems like a solid match.
Did you watch the documentary on Gatti's death? The obvious tough question: Do you think she did it?
I have it on my DVR and have not watched it yet but I have always thought she either did it or hired somebody else to carry it out. I do not believe Gatti killed himself and have not seen or read any compelling evidence that says he did.
You think the Areola/Stiverne fight is going to be a good fight?
I do. Two punchers who dont do anything fancy.
Any word on the Lou Dibella BAD in June? Willie Nelson?
Lou is working on it.
Prescott v Crawford a done deal yet?
I dont think it's signed but I am told it is agreed to.
Showtime has been a constant revision process with the crew of commentators. I think Malignaggi is decent and Al Bernstein is always great, but Mauro Ranallo is an over-enthusiast, as was Gus Johnson. I wish they could just find a smart blow-by-blow guy, but really, there's only one Jim Lampley.
That has been the general consensus in the chat queue for ages.
Has anyone even mentioned Mosley? Does anyone really care?
You just did. He is back May 18 vs. Pablo Cesar Cano in Mexico.
Do you know if Brian Kenny has any interest in doing play by play? I feel like he could do a good job.
BK can defintely do blow by blow and is good at it. He's done it a few times over the years. He is as versatile a guy as there is. He can do anything on a broadcast, including blow by blow. But he is also a top notch host.
Dan, your thoughts on Evander Holyfield telling Shekie Baby that he curses too much on Twitter? Did he insult the legend bubba? I thought Evander was the 000 real.
I saw that and it cracked me up.
Biggest accomplishment from Provodnikov? Not getting a serious headbutt by Bradley.
Pay the man, Shirley!
Would it kill Showtime to just let Steve Albert do blow-by-blow? He was underrated and 10x better than Gus and Mauro.
I always enjoyed listening to Steve. Great guy and total pro as an announcer.
I care about Mosley
I love Mauro and his enthusiasm. Not joking. I don't mind announcers getting excited at all. I was more bothered by Bob Papa who never got excited.
Hi Dan, did you get a chance to watch the Lundy v Postol fight...if so, how was it and did Hammerin' Hank get robbed?
Have not seen it. I may look for it online.
Surprised you had Bradley winning. After watching it twice, the best I could do for Bradley was a draw. Round 2 was clearly a 10-8 round
I had a 10-8 round and still had him winning a tight fight.
Who's got the call on Rios-Alvarado2? Seems like Papa has been around lately.
Lampley, Max and Roy will call that fight card.
Dan, you psyched for Donaire-Rigondeaux 4-13?
Sure, I think it's an interesting matchup. I would have preferred Donaire vs. Mares, but, hey, it is what it is.
i think this is the first time i have ever seen the words psyched and rigondeaux in the same sentence.
Why isn't Steve Albert calling the fights for Showtime?
I dont know.
More likely Manny-Bradley 2 or Manny-Marquez 5
HBO: I will break you.SHO: Go for it.
PAY THE MAN, SHIRLEY!!!!!!!!!!!
I care about Mosley big time and I'm concerned for his health if he starts taking heavy damage at this statge
The Wladimir Klitschko school of business: Stay active, fight the best guy available at the moment, and keep banking checks. What's to criticize?
Exactly. People just do not give him the credit he deserves. He is one of the most dominant heavyweight champions in history. It is not his fault that there is no big mega fight for him. The closest it came was Haye and he won basically every second of the fight.
How would you compare HBO's 24/7 versus Showtime's All Access shows?
Both good but very different in terms of presentation. 24/7 much slicker and fast moving, All Access a bit more gritty.
Breidis Prescott vs. Terrence Crawford... Good fight or mismatch?
Considering it was made on a week's notice it's a great save. Crawford is a very interesting up and comer with good power and we all know Prescott is a good veteran with great power. It's legit fight. It could be Crawford's coming out party or Prescott could win and move on to another title shot. So while it's not the HBO opening fight I would have made if I could have started from scratch 3 months ago, for a week's notice on a card with an A main event, I am fine with it and even interested in it because of Crawford's potential.
dan, duke should need to play left handed against albany to make it interesting.
I agree with u 100% about the Prescott v Crawford being a good fight or mismatch question.
Now....fight freaks....is the time in the chat.....WHEN WE DANCE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
"Lawrence is an up and comer"....you realize he's 37 yrs old and fought once last year, right?
I do know that but I also know he has not stepped up to face a good opponent and this is that time, so that is why I wrote it how I did.
Given how dominant Wladimir has been, isn't it strange to remember him escaping the Sam Peter fight so closely?
Not at all.
Stanley Ketchel would beat both Klitchkos
You mean the Stanley Ketchell who would be outweighed by rougly 100 pounds? Yeah, OK.
Is there any way to watch the Mosely/Cano fight on US tv? I don't know any carriers that have Fox Deportes.
I have Fox Deportes on my cable and that is how I will watch it. That is the US outlet for the fight. I would imagine that several weeks later it will replay on Fuel in English.
Any word on what's next for Delvin Rodriguez?
They were trying to make him with Gabe Rosado for ESPN2 but Rosado took the J'Leon Love fight for the Mayweather card so they're looking around for something for Delvin.
best wished to mrs dtm in month 9 of her pregnancy. better start winding down your travel schedule soon.
Soon, soon. Rios-Alvarado next week, ideally Donaire-Rigondeaux and then it's a fluid situation.
Scale of 1-10, how confident are you that Don King actually puts on the Germany show in May?
Hello Dan What bouts are set for the maywaether vs guerrero undercard
Ponce-Mares, Love-Rosado, Leo Santa Cruz-TBA.
Haven't seen Banishment in a while. It's always fun. Will you ban me for today just so we can see it? Banishment is starving.
Fine, you're banned.
What do you know about the proposed Dawson/Boone fight?
You mean Dawson-Stevenson. Stevenson has a rematch with Boone tonight. If Stevenson wins, he will be facing Dawson on June 8 for Dawson's 175 title.
Sometimes I wish that the Spanish channels had an "ENG" option similiar to the SAP option....love to watch the fights, but I can't understand anything the announcers are saying...
Agreed. When Top Rank did fights on Fox Deportes with Top Rank Live you could press the SAP button and the get the English and I loved it.
will you name your child something boxing related?
Dan, did they announce an opponent for JCC Jr. Yet?
I have to submit in my time for the pay period, but I'm following the chat instead.
dan do you think the older klitchko will ever fight again?
First to answer the Chavez question -- no opponent yet. As for Vitali, I do think he will fight at least once more.
Could you envision a scenario where ESPN/HBO do a joint card? ie: Undercard action is televised on ESPN, but the main event would require a jump over to HBO?
I'd never say never but I've never heard that discussed. I do happen to think it would be pretty interesting.
I admit I was on the Robert Helenius bandwagon. The guy he's fighting has 17 losses? He pretty much needs a massive KO to stay at all relevant right?
I wouldnt go that far but Helenius needs a good performance. He looked awful vs. Sherman Williams. He had a year off before that for the injury. And in the fight before the surgery he looked terrible vs. Chisora and got a gift hometown decision.
dan are you doing the epix show on sat.
I will not be in Germany with the rest of the team but I taped some stuff for the telecast.
What's next for Keith Thurman? Maidana?
Thurman is TBA. Maidana is fighting Josesito Lopez in June.
If Banishment is hungry, maybe he can have the guy who thinks Stanley Ketchel could beat the Klitchkos as a snack. Just sayin'.
Between this chat and March Madness, I've done approximately 15 minutes of actual work today and I've been here for 4 hrs...
Best news of the whole HBO/GB thing for boxing writers: Far fewer people asking when Pacquiao/Mayweather is gonna happen.
Did you watch the Tyson segment on real sports? Great TV.
I did. Was excellent. I would urge all Fight Freaks to catch a replay or find it on HBO On Demand.
Without you there, who will be the epix broadcast team for tomorrow?
Bruce Beck and Lou DiBella will call the fights.
I've been liking the fights on Wealth TV, any word on whether boxing is getting decent ratings on Wealth?
No idea about their ratings but they have fights this weekend with Stevenson-Boone card and next weekend with Bellew-Chilemba card.
How about Provodnikov - Matthysse down the road?
Awesome fight. Would love to see it.
I know this is a long shot but did you watch the Biography channel show about Arturo Gatti's death?
As I said earlier, I have it on the DVR but have not watched it yet.
The shift in power to Showtime could be a good thing for boxing, but HBO's shift in theme songs does nothing good for nobody. I used to be pumped when I'd hear the World Championship Boxing theme, now I get angry.
Dan - Have the other promoters gotten caught in the crossfire between GB and Top Rank or will they have the opportunity to do business with both promotions/networks?
If anything Golden Boy's banishment from HBO will open up more slots for other promoters at HBO.
Brandon Rios vs Ruslan Provodnikov please.
Dan the Man, any chance you are pulling for the UAlbany upset today against Duke since this is your old stompin grounds? #ShenPride4Life
Not at all. Duke fan for 27 years. I was born in Albany and grew up in a suburb but would never root for Albany over Duke.
Are we to assume that Showtime is beefing up their cab driver fleet for the arrival of Gary Russell Jr.?
Ever notice that Floyd says, "Like I said before" alllll of the time?
Like I said before, we have all noticed that.
DTM, how many kids u got?
Just the one on the way.
When is Andre Ward fighting again?
Nothing scheduled yet while he recovers from his shoulder injury but if all goes well I think we'll see him back in action in the late summer or early fall.
I for one am happy that Bradley is getting some respect and some publicity. He is one of my favorite fighters and seems like a great guy.
For all the grief Bradley has taken he is a nice guy.
How happy must Ross Greenburg be to get a chance to stick it to HBO?
I would imagine he is just happy to be working on a top boxing project with a subject he knows very well. Ross took a lot of grief (including from me) for programming decision about boxing at HBO. One thing that was never an issue was his brilliance when it came to making a great TV show or docu.
any chance of HBO or Showtime filming Mike Tyson's one man show for a special?
I thought about that. I'd love to see one of them do it.
D$, do you have one eye on the TV and one on the keyboard since your Dukies are on now?
In the last 5 years or so, can you think of any venue that has hosted better fights than Home Depot: 1. Rios v. Avalardo, 2. Marquez v. Vasquez III, 3. Vasquez v. Marquez I, 4. Bradley v. Pot, 5. Rios v. Antillion. Someone ask you last week if Bradley was a top ten fight all time. I don't think it is even a top 3 fogith for that ventue.
MGM and Mandalay have hosted their share of classics too. And so has Boardwalk Hall.
DTM any true to Leo Santa Cruz v. Jonathan Romero on May 4 undercard?
That was brought up but is not happening from what GB told me.
Is Larry Merchant excited to work with George Foreman again?
Didnt ask Larry specifically about that but I do know he is very excited for the trip to Macau. He's bringing his wife and they are going to make it into a vacation afterward.
who has more speed? Donaire or Rigondeaux
I think Donaire is a little quicker.
Glenn Johnson trains all the time in the boxing gym i go to in Miami. Is he a HOF?
No. Good fighter, great guy but not a hall of famer.
Do you get the feeling that things may not end well for Broner if he does not get his life under control?
Let's just say Broner needs some maturity. He's 23, is making a ton of money and these are things that happen.
All I want for Christmas are some spike strips to stop the HBO truck...
Pay the man, Shirley!
what do you think about a fight of gradovich vs marroquin?
That would be a helluva fight. Good call.
Hey Dan, Saw on twitter that Bryant Jennings booked his next fight for June, it looks like a step down in competition? What do you think?
It is very very difficult to make heavyweight fights. There are very few solid opponents out there. I have no issue with the fight.
Aside from the huge truck in the HBO intro, what's with the lip gloss? I'm not feeling the lip gloss.
Do you think HBO did the right thing to cut off Golden Boy fighters?
It's a tough question but as I have thought about it, I get it.
Any reason satellite providers don't offer EPIX, Wealth and Fox Deportes ala cart? I don't even have the option to watch these cards on my big screen.
Dont know. I am fortunate that I get both Epix and Fox Deportes on my cable system. I do not get WealthTV but would like to.
is james kirkland still at winkys school ?
Studying very, very hard.
Hey Dan, Did u see Broner kissing that stripper?
Yeah, I saw it. Unfortunately.
Dan i think i remember reading Floyd has an option to leave showtime after the 1st fight if he chooses is that right? If so would you be suprised if he went back to HBO seeing as how no more Golden boy fighters will be there
As I understand his deal he has out clauses so anything is possible. Floyd is not a Golden Boy fighter. He has worked with the company since 2007 fight by fight but he can hire any promoter he wants to work on his events.
Duke wins! Survive and advance.
I"m beginning to think TR and GB don't like each other very much.
Dan, I missed Abraham-Stieglitz I, but plan to do my homework and watch it in advance of the rematch. How did you score the first fight and whom are you picking to win the second?
The fight is on youtube and is a very good fight. It was very close and could have gone either way in my view.
Think Don George can make some noise in the middleweight division?
We'll have a better idea after tonight's FNF fight.
Hey Dan look on the bright side, Jim Grey gets to meet Adrian Broner and his brush. lol
What is the most logical reason Wladamir has not taken the fight with Povetkin yet and why does the WBA continue to allow him to push it off?
Are you crazy? He took the fight twice and Povetkin turned down the fight twice for career money after purse bids. Klitschko has no problem fighting him at all and will fight him later this year.
survive and advance sounds like strategy of miguel vazquez.
Thanks for chatting Fight Freaks. Enjoy the weekend fights. Good FNF card tonight and Epix tomorrow afternoon. Check out all the news stories, features and blogs and I will talk to you next week from Las Vegas, where I will be covering Rios-Alvarado II. Have a great weekend. Peace.
