Chat with Jesse Rogers

Jesse Rogers
  (1:02 PM)

Hi all. welcome to our weekly cubs chat here on fridays...beautiful day for baseball here in Az. Cubs are working out in front of me as we chat...then they'll drive over to play the Brewers not too far away..one week left..cuts made today...read them in the cubs blog and we can discuss here...fire away!

Bill (Chicago)

Do the Cubs have any interest in bringing back Ryan Theriot or Joe Mather as an emergency 3B?

Jesse Rogers
  (1:03 PM)

I really dont think so...Valbuena is as good as those guys and won Sveum over last year...is a guy like Chone Figgins going to get a look, probably. At least he is/was a third baseman..they already have enough middle infielders playing third

Rocco Derrico Wasco il [via mobile]

Is it realistic that Rizzo will hit 300 with 30 hr n 100 RBI ? And do you think sorinano can repeat his performance last year n if he does what will that mean for him come trade deadline ?

Jesse Rogers
  (1:05 PM)

I do think Soriano can repeat...just my opinion..age doesnt seem to be catching up with his bat..maybe his legs etc but he seems like a lock for 25 HR, etc. Thats asking a lot of Rizzo but I wouldnt put it past him...left-handed hitters have a hard time hitting a lot of HR's at Wrigley..course havent had many good ones over the years...anyway, lets say he comes close to those numbers at the very least

Cub Fan Bob (Chicago)

Why do we see so many contradicting trade rumors. One reporter will tweet one thing only to have the opposite happen or a GM officially refuted the claim ?

Jesse Rogers
  (1:08 PM)

Ha. I dont know if you mean specific to the cubs or not...All I can tell you is there are tons of reporters and each has a source of a story, some the same, some different...and some simply get it wrong or of course the narrative changes...some jump the gun and get something out there thats wrong and of course GM's play games too...just the nature of it all...Ill tell you how we do it...ESPN wont let us tweet stuff that isnt verified from several places, etc so nothing we put out there is haphazard...though it still might be dead wrong!

Dave (Chicago)

Any status on Arodys Vizcaino

Jesse Rogers
  (1:08 PM)

Start the season on the DL..not sure of his plan..something to follow up on as we head to final week here.

Aurora Dan (Aurora, il)

Ronny Cedeno-Any chance he comes back as Utility?

Jesse Rogers
  (1:10 PM)

Well he was just released...Ill say that they will for sure look at him...is he better than Gonzalez? Possibly..I havent seen him this spring obviously but I do think he and Figgins are being considered...doesnt mean it will happen so lets say hes in the mix at least

Jon (Indiana)

Big time cubs fan, love your coverage, anything new on the marmol or soriano trade rumors or are they going to be around awhile?

Jesse Rogers
  (1:12 PM)

Really think Soriano will be around...And now I really think GM's/Scouts want to see Marmol in real games and if he can close..the moment he looks good to them I think the trigger is pulled...still could happen over the next week but due to his just ok spring I think they want to see if he can still close come the reg season

Steve (Roselle )

So is Clevenger out of the picture for the last roster spot?

Jesse Rogers
  (1:12 PM)

I think so..they dont need a third catcher that can only , kind of play first base..

Will (henryville,in) [via mobile]

How many starts do they give a struggling bottom half if rotation before call up Rusin for a sophmore year

Jesse Rogers
  (1:14 PM)

Great great question...I think Feldman is given more leash than lets say Travis Wood and if Villanueva struggles he could go to the pen and Rusin up...lets not pretend like Rusin is some stud waiting in the wings, hes simply next guy up in rotation due to a good spring

Paul (Chicago)

Jesse, I noticed that Fujikawa closed last night's game with Marmol setting up. Should we be reading anything into that?

Jesse Rogers
  (1:15 PM)

Another good one..I tweeted that out when it happened..because of the cuts today, wasnt able to ask dale about that...my guess is simply to see Fuji in that role at least one time before the season starts but if it happens again, maybe they've made a change, quietly. Ill check

Andy -Iowa [via mobile]

Baez and Solar. How far realistically are they from Chicago?

Jesse Rogers
  (1:17 PM)

Assuming their progress matches their talent if you know what I mean, then a year to year and a half?...mid to late season next year if not out of camp? Obvioiusly this is a big year for both of them if they are fast tracked...otherwise 2015

Riley, Dallas [via mobile]

Ok so Jackson and vitters appear to be guaranteed call ups. What do we know about Junior Lake? Could he possibly play third?

Jesse Rogers
  (1:18 PM)

Yes, definitely..but he's on the shelf to start the year...he might move past Vitters for all we know..Jackson will come up at some point, no doubt. After that, its a crapshoot at third base.

James D (Naperville)

What are the plans for a setup man/next in line closer if Marmol walks the planet or gets traded?

Jesse Rogers
  (1:19 PM)

Well rememeber Camp and Russell basically did that job last year...everyone just moves up a notch if that happens with Fuji closing

Sara (Chicago)

What have you learned about the Cubs during covering spring training over the last 6 months, er, weeks? Is your impression of the org/players any different now that you're on the beat?

Jesse Rogers
  (1:22 PM)

Um, not really different, no. They are definitely being careful with their prospects..usually the cubs have over hyped what they have but Theo/Jed/Dale all say the same thing: slow down...let it all play out..so what Ive learned it their owner is being patient which is a rarity in sports and I think any regime would love to have one chance at what the cubs are doing..rebuild from the bottom up..facilities, players, etc...so I feel like they are trying to get it right at every level and not rush through things...anyone that thinks they do it all for money is wrong...Theo could secure a baseball legacy like no one else in the history of the game if he wins here after Boston...thats worth something

Zach (Chicago)

IF Garza pitches well after his DL stint, does he get traded or do the Cubs keep him? Also who is the first prospect you believe will be called up for whatever reason?

Jesse Rogers
  (1:25 PM)

I think if Garza pitches well into July he'll be traded not simply afer his DL stint...no one cares about May, they care about June and July...I guess Brett Jackson would be the easy answer..but man has DeJesus impressed me this spring but we'll see if that carries over...and we dont know for sure what Schierholtz will do...so jackson is waiting in the wings from the left side...otherwise Rusin would be my answer

DC (Mobile)

you've mentioned Figgens twice - are you just speculating on your own

Jesse Rogers
  (1:26 PM)

Educated specualtion? Does that work?

Jason (Louisville, KY)

It seems like most MLB teams don't let "young" talent come to the show anymore. You don't see many teens or early 20s guys playing as much as you did years ago. Why is that? Why don't the Cubs let Jackson, Soler, and Baez work out the kinks at the major league level? Especially, since we're "rebuilding".

Jesse Rogers
  (1:29 PM)

Im not sure if thats true...Trout, Castro, Harper, all very young coming up...I dont think there is a reason behind it..all up to the player and where his developemnt is...I think the answer to your question is why not let them work out the kinks without a million eyes on them while also bulding confidence..its simply the safer approach...no one has ever been ruined by being in the minors too long...Im not saying its right or wrong but I do give the benefit of the doubt for the reason you stated...they arent winning anything right now so better safe then sorry

jack (Chicago)

Brian Bogusevic had another good game yesterday, is their anything he can do to make this team?

Jesse Rogers
  (1:29 PM)

Be a right handed hitter

Dan (Wyoming)

I keep hearing that the waiver wire will be the answer at 3b. Is a Chone Figgins type really better than just handing the reigns to a young guy earlier than planned? When they get healthy, why not use Vitters or Lake? And if Baez can pull off a Castro - no need to wait 500 AAA at bats...he can be up by Sep. But that would mean playing him at 3B in the minors this year...

Jesse Rogers
  (1:31 PM)

I dont think they know the answers to your questions..that will be debated in the coming days..Vitters and Lake have to prove something at AAA first...it seems like people think these decisions are in stone...if you think they can handle MLB then they should dominate in the minors and move up...the cubs have eyes too...if someone is lighting it up they wont stay there but why hand something before at least proving it unless you;re a cant miss...and I dont think soler and baez are necessarily cant miss

Jesse Rogers
  (1:33 PM)
